  • Bougainville could be the world's next country. The small Pacific island of about 300,000 residents is fighting for its independence from Papua New Guinea, which is hopelessly in the pockets of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Bougainville wants nothing to do with it after successfully blocking Chinese influence in its own territory. In this episode of China Unscripted, we talk about Bougainville's plan for independence, why China covets Bougainville so much, and Bougainville's secret sauce to blocking Chinese influence. Joining us in this episode is John Kuhns, the chairman and CEO of Numa Numa Resources in Bougainville. John is also the author of the book They Call Me Ishmael, a novel based on the real story of a rebel leader with big dreams for his island.

I am Bougainvillean and find it interesting to watch. The mine its gold and copper has huge potential but sadly blood has been spilled. Johns presence in Arawa represents the American interest for sure otherwise why not live in Numa Numa Plantation? The Australians, The British and America funny enough also want the gold and copper for themselves. Why divert attention and only mention China? At least China is trying to do things. Not offering IMF or World Bank loans in exchange for Bougainvilles copper and gold all the way to eternia. The west continues to be misguided to think we are there to make you guys wealthy but not us. Why is it that there is no voice from the Bougainvilleans?

    • @paulhumphreys9615
      @paulhumphreys9615 2 месяца назад

Your opinion is misguided thinking the West is the issue because it's plain to see you have not done your research into how the CCp Vs Chinese business works in other countries. The Governments interests is far different to private business interests and one is forever trying to sway it's interest politically, not just financially. This is inherently dangerous for small countries that have little to no experience or knowledge dealing with such a persuasive force like the CCp. Corruption, bribery and cohesion quickly take over a local government and perspectives shift from the people to self...... When referring to other countries wanting the resources, you are incorrect Private businesses within those countries are obviously interested but their governments have no interest whatsoever, so you have to understand there is a huge difference when comparing to a government backed operation and private equity back operation.
Mines require massive investments into the hundreds of millions these days, therefore it goes without saying, those capable of doing that WILL want their money back for such an investment. They are certainly not there to be a charitable organisation and anyone who thinks they should be is delusional. A business is there to make money so it is therefore critical contracts and agreements are well designed and written so the local communities get a fair trade for their resource. Panguna mine was the most sophisticated and expensive mine to build in it's time. The township had the best hospital, schools, training facilities and more modern conveniences than even Port Moresby, all built by RioTinto for the people and community at large. Anyone that feels it wasn't enough are those who at the time were officials who had greed in their eyes for themselves.

      Me save took belong you,
You are 100% correct that western powers have squandered goodwill over decades of misuse of their power and influence.
The problem now, for those western powers and the good people of Oceania is that China is willing to throw money around to win influence, even as they historically are known for looking down on non-chinese as sub-human. This is a very dangerous situation for the Melanesian peoples currently, as you may find yourself in a future situation like the Urghurs in China currently do.
China will seek to crush your hard won freedoms over time, and it will be much worse than anything the west has done in the past. I really worry for you guys, as I lived in PNG back in the 90's and know how warm and generous the Melanesian spirit is, China is purely an exploitive power now, even as it 'invests'.

Sir Michael Somare, God rest his soul, was fighting for independence and also trying to keep the soon to be new country intact. Read about the Mungkas movement (the black fist) (Bougainville secessionist movement). Notable Bougainville figures that time included Fr John Momis (now Chief John Momis), Mr Leo Hannett, Sir Paul Lapun (First Knight of PNG) etc. Thanks.

He obviously has his own business interests to meet but he also understands how he needs to help Boganville be a stable and prosperous place for his own needs to be met. This is why many of us in the developing world still value America and the west as trade partners instead of China. It's mainly our corrupt politicians who prefer China for the bribe money.

South Pacific islands are friends of Australia, with such scale projects, why an American won't consult Australian government for that? Australia wants to keep their friends and we have Quad to look after them in redevelopment. Australia has given funding and aids to Solomon government, why won't Bougainville be the same as Solomon applying aids from Australia? Why one American company wants to monopoly the whole island?

Umm no, here is the full history for anyone curious.
    1. Bougainville was taken by Germany in 1899.
    2. WW1 occurred, and after Germany lost, Australia took over Bougainville (basically replacing Germany there).
    3. WW2 started, in fact Australian soldiers in Bougainville opened fire first on Japanese planes flying over, this started Australia's own war against Japan (which was a sub-part of WW2).
    4. The USA is an Australian ally, so as a part of the USA's own war against Japan, the USA helped Australia defeat the Japanese in Bougainville.
    5. After this, the USA left and just let Australia continue to own Bougainville (the USA never tried to help the actual people or give them independence, the USA just returned them under colonisation of a US ally, Australia).
The man on you brought onto your show is very dishonest I am afraid, he comes off as a swindler.
BTW I am Australian myself, and I am anti-CCP, but we have to be honest about how things actually were and not spin nonsense revisionism.

The PNG National Constitution does not allow secession.
Amendments must be first made to the constitution, this could lead to the New Guinea Islands Provinces breaking away, with the Central Province following suit (CP got their referendum at the same time as Bougainville but wasn't politically developed, Central Province also contains the National Capital).
    PNG would disintegrate.

As long as the US Industrial Complex has it's way the US will not adopt or try to compete with how China is conducting business by winning the hearts and minds of the island people and by brining in Jobs and economic aid. The China contract with the islands may favor china - China does not need this. They will simple fish in the waters next to the islands and also mine next to the islands just lik they do else where. China has over 1000 merchant ships that fish off of Costa Rica and other costal areas very far from the pacific. China's merchants fishing ships are everywhere, yet no one is stopping them. Also, some of these merchant ships are not what they appear to be.

Everyone should watch the 60 Minutes production of the Chinese construction company that went into Fiji, apparently without the knowledge of the Fiji and government, destroyed Arif and made a mess of paradise in an attempt to build a casino resort for Chinese tourists. They built on land that they did not own and they destroyed the environment in the process and then fled the country. I wrote a letter to the prime Minister of Fiji about my concerns.

Agree, Travis. But, then those key democracies are labelled interfering colonial powers, who should butt-out of Pacific Affairs, for example. The BRI is a Trojan house. I wonder how Pacific Leaders are incentivised to hurt their own people. It is mad policy to insert, say, the Solomons into a conflict between AUKUS and China. The bots say how little Australia has done. Yet, Australia provided 45% of all aid to the Pacific islands between 2009 and 2019. China, 8%. True, Australia should have listened more to the Solomons’ concerns about Climate Change. The new Australian Federal Government now should be more sensitive to Inlander requests help.
