  • These are the meals I ate while hiking The Otter Trail in South Africa, which is a 5 day trail. I also took some frozen meat along for the first night.

Absolutely love your videos. Mom and I are ticking off her otter trail bucket list item in Feb 2023. We been watching so many what to pack videos, this was by far the best.
You did a video a while ago where you split your food into days you were hiking, this was also such a great informative fun video to watch.
We so worried we pack too much or too little food.

Thank you so much for this wonderful comment! I'm sure you are going to have a magical trip in February. I have done both (packed too much food and too little food), and while it was a bit annoying, it didn't ruin the trip. I think the best is to do a few smaller overnight trips to experiment with how much food you will need 😊

When we went 6 odd years ago, we pre-seasoned x4 300gram steaks, vacuum packed them then froze them rock hard. Each guy had x4 steaks wrapped in one or two sheets of newspaper. By day 3 and 4 the steaks were defrosted but still ice cold. Only steak works for these reasons: Lamb chops have bones = extra weight. Pork and chicken you don't want to play with. I will tell you, the other group of europeans eating their freeze dried trail food from some branded packs looked at us longingly every night when we braaied.

The weight of my food was around 4kg at the start of the trail.

Will you be able to do the Shoprite or PNP version of this ? Most of this appears to be Woolworths home brand.

You're correct: for this trip I did shop at Woolworths. I have some other videos with food from Pick n Pay and Checkers: ruclips.net/video/VA5I8q2aR8A/видео.html&ab_channel=RoughingItWithRuth and ruclips.net/video/I-TJxWoKcjY/видео.html&ab_channel=RoughingItWithRuth
