It's amazing what a 193 TBI head can flow with some trick porting.

@@CarGuyV8 I'll stick with the Vortec head. You're starting with a better head and they have much more potential.

Would an 88 4.3 have the same intake shape and design as the swirl port.
If you swapped to Vortex heads, you'd need the matching intake, which I assume requires something other than a throttle body.
Do you then need the ECM from the newer vehicle.
I'm thinking unless you're going for a lot more power, some minor porting of the original heads and a decent valve job would be less of a headache and still give you some gains.

what kind of horse power did you get with that "trick" porting? ive got a 95 tahoe with the non vortec heads... what exactly did you do? thanks!

Excellent information. I've been on the hunt for a true Vortec motor and keep finding TBI engines instead. Now I know what bolt pattern to look for.

    • @randy1ization
      @randy1ization 10 месяцев назад +1

you need to keep air fuel ratios and fuel mapping in mind,, MAF and Map values,. fuel pump pressure, ect.. the computer has to get along with the changes.. ive seen this same scenario MANY times, and they cant get it right, they spend thousands more than planned, and end up selling it, in defeat. sometimes the ECM programming has to be modified, and you really dont know what changes they made,, not worth the hassle on a fuel injected, computer controlled engine,, if your going with carbureted, then yes, you can dick with the timing and carburetor until u get it to run good. you may have to get a stand alone Efi set up, with its own computer. THEN you must consider transmission inputs.. if the automatic transmission doesnt see the input values it wants, it will go into limp home mode, or worse burn it up.. if u want a votec motor, buy a truck that already has one in it from the factory.

Ok guys need a little advice! I have a 94 cheyenne 4x4 swb truck with a 5 speed and a 4.3 in it. I have a 305 tbi block, my question is will i gain much power by bolting a set of 350vortec heads on it? Also it will be carburated and a little bit of a cam. Any advice is greatly appreciated guys

    • @luckyPiston

that swap has been done and every one has seen very good results , you need to swap in flat tops on the 305 to maintain compression if that’s a concern . other than that put in a nice cam and you’ve got a great little runner

The vortec is the same as early 350 chevy some of the manifolds flex when removed there was a 350 head in the 80's that had both bolt patterns but the TBI and the vortex are definitely the same ex bolt pattern

    • @four-eight-zero5627

You cannot put a TBI manifold on these heads. (I've heard about guys modifying these intakes to do it... but it sounds like a nightmare)
I put a set of 906 Vortec heads on a TBI short block with the Edelbrock RPM Performer manifold (for Vortec heads). Topped off with TBI unit from SPR Performance on top of their adapter plate.
Challenging but apropriate build for a beginner. Aftermarket cam plus these heads required tuning though.

With the prices of aluminum performance heads coming down, it makes no sense to fool with a set of cast iron units that more than likely will need machine work prior to installation.

    • @DeliriumElectric

Kinda true, but most aluminum heads shouldn't be just bolted on. They still need to be properly checked. Also, I wouldn't be buying them with hardware already installed.
