I personally feel that Mark Hamill's potrayals of the Joker are the best, both in Batman the Animated Series, many of the animated movies, and the games.
Sorry never was my favorite joker... the modern jokers are just not fun (same is true of the current and most recent Bats). But I never did like the old Dark Knight series (Miller crap... don't like Miller, no finesse very little substance and plot holes you can drive a freight train thru.)
Since you can't take the Magic Initiate feat twice, I would have put a level or two into Bard to round off the build. Fun build though, wasn't expecting you to go Swashbuckler. Just like I wasn't expecting the knife-shoe.
Ok speaking of chaos, how about some of that Bugs Bunny energy? Build must include high charisma, mobility for days, and a pocket dimension for holding your shenanigans so you can pull them out at will. It's called "hammerspace" for a reason after all.

I would have expected some levels of bard, rather than just the Magic Initiate feat, but I'm a big fan of the Mark Hamil version of the character, which is much more tricks, gadgets and twists and has very little brutish fighting. For me, I'd probably trade the fighter levels for bard levels. Totally agree with you about it being strange that rogues don't get extra attack. Whenever I play rogues, I would defiantly rather have extra attack than uncanny dodge.

Variant Human, Entertainer Background. Took the Magic Initiate (Sorcerer) to get Poison Spray, Shocking Grasp, and Mage Armor. 14 STR 13 DEX 12 CON 10 INT 8 WIS 15 CHA - Went 2 levels of Fighter for his time as Red Hood, went Unarmed for Martial sytle since he has been strong. - 4 levels of Bard (College of Eloquence), chose the college mainly for the silver tongue and unsettling words abilities, for his time after Ace Chemicals. - Back to Fighter for 2 more levels and got the lucky feat. Took the Battle Master for Parry, Goading Attack, and Feinting Attack. - 2 More levels of Bard. Only went to 10, but seemed pretty good, and seemed fairly Mark Hamill Joker.
Point of order. You can't take Magic Initiate twice. "You can take each feat only once, unless the feat's description says otherwise." IIRC the only one that says you can take it multiple times is Elemental Adept

I loved the starting skit! Im just curious about the build, I believe that, instead of multiclassing into fighter, why wouldn't you multiclass into satire bard? I mean, that gives you tasha's hideous laughter, vicious mockery and disguise self even sooner Everytime I read satire bard I think of the joker, and im sure Im not the only one. The Brute abilities are neat, of course, but I dont think they fit him that well, if you suggest multiclassing for the extra attack, swords bard got you covered with that. Anyway, you're not wrong with the build, there's tons of ways to recreate the same character, Im just suggesting what would I do instead.
Great question, Brutish Durability, Second Wind, and extra attack were what pulled me to do fighter instead. Beyond the Magic Initiate spells, there isn't a lot I want from Bard.

It’s perfect because no intelligent, sane person would advertise what their gonna do to someone or how they’re going to attack and anyone who knows the Joker would expect some sort of trick. This is the best episode! Well done Tulok! Amazing episode! An alternative to fighter would be college of blade bard. You get the fighting style, more spells without feats, and can be a bardic comedian.

Gotta say, it didn't really feel "joker" to me till that 18th and 20th level where you pull out some nice tricks. I would have liked to see more things like that incorporated into the build. In my mind he's more about tricks and traps than fighting.
What stood out to me though is that Joker wouldn't know that. Heck, he had no idea that Barbara Gordon was Batgirl, and didn't know why Batgirl was suddenly all different after he had shot the commissioner's daughter, since he had no reason to connect the two.

For those of us who don't want to play Chaotic Evil murderhoboes, there is the option of reflavoring this build as a Chaotic Good counterpart to the Joker (like the Jester/Jokester of Earth-3, or the "bent, but not broken" Red Hood from Batman: The Brave and the Bold).
Mark Hamill is the Best Joker 🃏 He perfectly shows the Multiple Choice philosophy. I REALLY need a Jason Voorhees build. I wonder if he’s either Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil.
Hey there Tulok! Great job on the build. I'm definitely digging it but I personally would tweek it a bit more if I were aligning it more with the character concept. Keeping your human variant with the Lucky build is solid. Won't alter that. Keep with the Rogue too, definitely lean more to that. However, I'd change up the Rogue archetype to Mastermind. In a majority of the published history, Joker has never been that physically gifted, but I get it if you're just trying to keep an idea but have your own character/combat points. But Joker is all about throwing his allies to the wolves and attracting the most unhinged and volatile allies who seem to never betray him. LVL 3: Master of Intrigue: proficiency in disguise kit, forgery kit and a gaming set (razor-sharp cards) and we're practically the animated series joker polly wolly doodle all day. LVL 3: Master of Tactics: helping an ally as a bonus action and from a safe range of 30 feet: Go get 'em Harley! LVL 6: Insightful Manipulator: Being able to size up an enemy or mark with abilities and determine how well they can measure up is kind of critical to the weird, yet undeniable genius of the joker. NOW! You could jump off here, and that's perfectly fine. But for me, I'd follow this all the way down to 17. LVL 9: Misdirection: The ability to have an attack hit another person near you seems cool and totally in line with Joker, but it's trigger requirements are pretty rare and hard to line up. LVL 17: Soul of Deceit: THIS IS THE GOLD MINE, BABY! To me, this IS the Joker. With his own "supersanity" and constant lies and retelling of his origin and backstories, to me, this is his feature alone. No one can tell if you're lying, no one can read your thoughts, hell... Even Martian Manhunter went crazy peeking into your skull. What a champion. At 17 I completely agree that we need some bard flavoring. Joker is a clown, after all, and he has preformed quite admirably for the crowds and commoners alike with great success. I'd personally go 3 into Lore Bard, it's just too good to pass up. Vicious Mockery as a cantrip and Cutting Words is right up Joker's alley... where he may have killed Bruce's parents. If you wanted to dip 6 levels into Bard instead of following Mastermind till LVL 17, then the ability to pick up two other spells from any spell list is a real killer punch line. I love the idea of having Magic Initiate somewhere in the build. Shocking Grasp, Poison Spray, Disguise Self, and Light (see the joke he tell Batman in "The Killing Joke") and we have a great copy of the animated series/Alan Moore version of the Clown Prince of Crime. I'd supplement Find Familiar in there as well, somehow to fuck with people to a whole new level and supplement the Master of Tactics role, but it's not super necessary. Heat Metal for anyone stupid enough to pull the Azreal tin can suit on you, and Invisibility for when you need to dip out and we have a really tricky build here. Great job, man! I hope you see this and weigh in on it. Keep the work up and I'll see you when you post!
So, next week is the Elric bros and...crap, I only knew that one because you mentioned it before. I was thinking, what would a party based on the classic game Chrono Trigger look like? Crono himself would probably be fighter with...wizard? Magus would be a dark elf sorcerer, Lucca an artificer, Marle a ranger, Robo a warforged, Arle a barbarian, but what about Frog? I mean he's literally a frogman (technically a human fighter under a curse) and the game doesn't have a species for that.
The reason Rogue only gets one attack is that Sneak Attack works once per turn (excluding reactions), exceptions being specified like in the Scout subclass. Also you are only able to take a feat once unless otherwise specified, Magic Initiate can only be taken once.
This and the Darth Vader build are honestly probably the most viable builds to come out so far in terms of minmaxing. At least, as far as I've seen. This is a solid rogue build with lots of second chances to succeed in whatever it is the Joker is trying to accomplish. It suits him. I might still go for something that maxes out intelligence tho

Chaotic Evil but everything has an actual point to it. This isn't just some murder hobo, this is THE JOKER. "All it takes is one bad day to turn the sanest person into a raving lunatic." THAT is your mission.
Minor Illusion is always a good cantrip if you need cover. Run as far as you can and then *bloop* you're behind an imaginary boulder with full cover. Probably a better bard cantrip than Light.
Concept: the joker actually says "Knock Knock" then batman rolls his eyes and asks who's there, the joker stands stunned for a bit before saying "Not your parents....I'm just spitballing here!"
To anyone coming on, I rebuilt this with the arcane trickster class. It gives you access to tashas early on and all of the other wizard spells to make jokers joy buzzer (shocking grasp), poison flower (Poison Spray/acid arrow), disappearing tricks (misty step, blink), and the very important dynamite (fireball). Keep luck and utilizing counter spell, both can be reflavored as telling jokes (Hammil) or saying awful things that just happen to be true (Ledger) to distract your opponents. A level of fighter/Fighting Initiate feat gave me thrown weapon proficiency and the magic item "Bracer of Flying Daggers" re-flavored as cards gives me two attacks per round. Using swashbuckling to get free crits against single targets is great, but you can spend a bonus to get advantage on a target all the live long day with Versatile Trickster as long as Mage Hand is active, take the Magic Initiate for Bard to get an ink/paint spray (Fairie Fire), or cast Hold Person as a reflavored joker venom. This is just to level thirteen. Imagine how worse he would be with more rogue or fighter
This is rad, but I would personally focus on Bard for this build, flavoring spells as Joker's wacky gadgets. You still get the Charisma and knife swinging chaos!

Gotta say, it didn't really feel "joker" to me till that 18th and 20th level where you pull out some nice tricks. I would have liked to see more things like that incorporated into the build. In my mind he's more about tricks and traps than fighting.
Definitely. Mix those in a little earlier for that Joker feel. It's hard to balance "Joker" as so many versions vary depending on who plays him

What stood out to me though is that Joker wouldn't know that. Heck, he had no idea that Barbara Gordon was Batgirl, and didn't know why Batgirl was suddenly all different after he had shot the commissioner's daughter, since he had no reason to connect the two.
@@BJGvideos I doubt he'd care because he's like that dog who chases cars. Once he's got it (batgirl's ID) he wouldn't know what to do with it, so I think he honestly has more fun being ignorant with some things.

My take on this was not too different, I thought of adding a couple of Bard levels, but Spell Initiate does cover it all.

this build feels surprisingly viable for a campaign with combat and RP elements. NICE WORK.
Considering Joker's mysterious origins, and his pension for master disguises, I've felt that making him a Changeling could work.

For those of us who don't want to play Chaotic Evil murderhoboes, there is the option of reflavoring this build as a Chaotic Good counterpart to the Joker (like the Jester/Jokester of Earth-3, or the "bent, but not broken" Red Hood from Batman: The Brave and the Bold).

Hey there Tulok! Great job on the build. I'm definitely digging it but I personally would tweek it a bit more if I were aligning it more with the character concept.
Keeping your human variant with the Lucky build is solid. Won't alter that. Keep with the Rogue too, definitely lean more to that. However, I'd change up the Rogue archetype to Mastermind. In a majority of the published history, Joker has never been that physically gifted, but I get it if you're just trying to keep an idea but have your own character/combat points. But Joker is all about throwing his allies to the wolves and attracting the most unhinged and volatile allies who seem to never betray him.
LVL 3: Master of Intrigue: proficiency in disguise kit, forgery kit and a gaming set (razor-sharp cards) and we're practically the animated series joker polly wolly doodle all day.
LVL 3: Master of Tactics: helping an ally as a bonus action and from a safe range of 30 feet: Go get 'em Harley!
LVL 6: Insightful Manipulator: Being able to size up an enemy or mark with abilities and determine how well they can measure up is kind of critical to the weird, yet undeniable genius of the joker.
NOW! You could jump off here, and that's perfectly fine. But for me, I'd follow this all the way down to 17.
LVL 9: Misdirection: The ability to have an attack hit another person near you seems cool and totally in line with Joker, but it's trigger requirements are pretty rare and hard to line up.
LVL 17: Soul of Deceit: THIS IS THE GOLD MINE, BABY! To me, this IS the Joker. With his own "supersanity" and constant lies and retelling of his origin and backstories, to me, this is his feature alone. No one can tell if you're lying, no one can read your thoughts, hell... Even Martian Manhunter went crazy peeking into your skull. What a champion.
At 17 I completely agree that we need some bard flavoring. Joker is a clown, after all, and he has preformed quite admirably for the crowds and commoners alike with great success.
I'd personally go 3 into Lore Bard, it's just too good to pass up. Vicious Mockery as a cantrip and Cutting Words is right up Joker's alley... where he may have killed Bruce's parents. If you wanted to dip 6 levels into Bard instead of following Mastermind till LVL 17, then the ability to pick up two other spells from any spell list is a real killer punch line.
I love the idea of having Magic Initiate somewhere in the build. Shocking Grasp, Poison Spray, Disguise Self, and Light (see the joke he tell Batman in "The Killing Joke") and we have a great copy of the animated series/Alan Moore version of the Clown Prince of Crime. I'd supplement Find Familiar in there as well, somehow to fuck with people to a whole new level and supplement the Master of Tactics role, but it's not super necessary. Heat Metal for anyone stupid enough to pull the Azreal tin can suit on you, and Invisibility for when you need to dip out and we have a really tricky build here.

So, next week is the Elric bros and...crap, I only knew that one because you mentioned it before.
I was thinking, what would a party based on the classic game Chrono Trigger look like? Crono himself would probably be fighter with...wizard? Magus would be a dark elf sorcerer, Lucca an artificer, Marle a ranger, Robo a warforged, Arle a barbarian, but what about Frog? I mean he's literally a frogman (technically a human fighter under a curse) and the game doesn't have a species for that.

The reason Rogue only gets one attack is that Sneak Attack works once per turn (excluding reactions), exceptions being specified like in the Scout subclass.
Also you are only able to take a feat once unless otherwise specified, Magic Initiate can only be taken once.

This and the Darth Vader build are honestly probably the most viable builds to come out so far in terms of minmaxing. At least, as far as I've seen. This is a solid rogue build with lots of second chances to succeed in whatever it is the Joker is trying to accomplish. It suits him. I might still go for something that maxes out intelligence tho

PHB p165 "You can take each feat only once, unless the feat's description says otherwise." The Magic Initiate feat does not list an exception to that rule which means you can only take it once.

Chaotic Evil but everything has an actual point to it. This isn't just some murder hobo, this is THE JOKER. "All it takes is one bad day to turn the sanest person into a raving lunatic." THAT is your mission.

Minor Illusion would have also been a good second cantrip for the Joker.
Minor Illusion is always a good cantrip if you need cover. Run as far as you can and then *bloop* you're behind an imaginary boulder with full cover. Probably a better bard cantrip than Light.
Concept: the joker actually says "Knock Knock" then batman rolls his eyes and asks who's there, the joker stands stunned for a bit before saying "Not your parents....I'm just spitballing here!"
To anyone coming on, I rebuilt this with the arcane trickster class. It gives you access to tashas early on and all of the other wizard spells to make jokers joy buzzer (shocking grasp), poison flower (Poison Spray/acid arrow), disappearing tricks (misty step, blink), and the very important dynamite (fireball). Keep luck and utilizing counter spell, both can be reflavored as telling jokes (Hammil) or saying awful things that just happen to be true (Ledger) to distract your opponents.
A level of fighter/Fighting Initiate feat gave me thrown weapon proficiency and the magic item "Bracer of Flying Daggers" re-flavored as cards gives me two attacks per round. Using swashbuckling to get free crits against single targets is great, but you can spend a bonus to get advantage on a target all the live long day with Versatile Trickster as long as Mage Hand is active, take the Magic Initiate for Bard to get an ink/paint spray (Fairie Fire), or cast Hold Person as a reflavored joker venom.
This is just to level thirteen. Imagine how worse he would be with more rogue or fighter

This is rad, but I would personally focus on Bard for this build, flavoring spells as Joker's wacky gadgets. You still get the Charisma and knife swinging chaos!
