Good to see an authoritative voice such as yourself recognising the part Hornby's RR+ range is playing in making our hobby more accessible. Not everyone wants - or can afford - today's super detailed models.
This a very good model of a daily train experience from my childhood so I couldn't do without it when released even though its Railroad Plus. I was very surprised when I saw the external quality and very satisified with my purchase. Then I came to fit my ESU sound decoder and found exactly the same problem separating top and bottom but without you courage! I can see where some simple reshaping would make that a much easier task but, as you said, even minor changes to major moulds cost £10,000s and would increase the cost noticeably. At least I can now get in their and as yo rightly say, some simple work with a paintbrush as weel will take the model to a new standard. Thank you very much for heping me overcome my fear!
Oh wow, this brings back some memories. My parents bought me the original three car green version for Christmas back in the 1980s. I don't know if I still have it, but I remember being impressed by the flush glazing and amount of detail they had. I think with a bit of weathering these things can look superb, and it's great to see Hornby making the most of old tooling to help modellers on a budget. I had a Lima Class 73 back then as well, and I think Hornby are still using that tooling in their Railroad plus range - they're superb models and incredibly detailed considering the age of the tooling.
Got the green 110 from a previous making , it really is a very nice model , difficult to believe the base model is 42 years old ! Just waiting for my Strathclyde 101 also in Railroad Plus . Looks good. And good value
I literally just won one of the old three car blue and grey DMU R403 comprising R064 - R065 and R426 off fleabay .. a true attic find as the box is damp deformed and covered in spider poo. Hooked it up to some 12v power and it runs albeit a bit jerky. I plan to swap to a CD motor, change the ghastly uneven Silver-Link wheels and throw in an HM7000 TXS (when a profile becomes available!! I can't stop looking at it... I love its cheapness, but it still looks great.
More budget models are welcome but the rrp price is still far too high for such a basic model. A few weeks ago a certain well known online retailer was selling many Realtrack 156 DMU's for the same price as this Hornby model. Bachmann DMUs can often be picked up for less too. I'd expect to pay about £60 max for this one. The dcc socket with solder pads is a useful feature. Hopefully other railroad models will now include this feature.
I was considering returning to the hobby in the last few years but believe the prices are simply not justifiable. Last loco I bought was when Hornby brought out the fantastic C50, must of been 20 years ago.
I agree. It’s outrageous the prices being charged worldwide for model trains. Anything between 300-900 dollars Australian is just ridiculous. Not to mention all the DCC products….

Another informative video. Thanks Jenny. Good to see a model that can take a bit of handling without reducing it’s self to kit form. Likewise, if you’ve a mind to, there’s plenty of detailing that can be added, driver and passengers especially, otherwise it’s a runaway ghost train. As you said, a little added weight will most likely improve pulling power. I’m a bit surprised that the glazing is not glued into place. Maybe the model you were sent was a one off that missed out on a drop of poly cement. Wondering if the non-powered car had fixed glazing? One thing I use to remove clip-on body shells is pieces of old point packaging and the plastic collar stiffeners found in a new shirt. Cut them to shape and slide between the body and chassis to disengage the clips. It saves the fingernails! Looking forward to other “Railroad / Railroad Plus” reviews. Keep up the good work. 👍
I’ve bought the 3-car green pack and fitted an HM7000 Bluetooth decoder with sound. It’s superb. Yes, the tooling’s a bit dated, but who really notices on the layout? The motor is up-dated and is smooth running. I love it!
The windows look quite good for such an old mould. Very clear and with the motor bogie in the back, you have great potential for adding some passengers.
This older tooled model does still look good for its age. I have one of the older Hornby three car units in BR green which I purchased used and as a bonus it had a few passengers added. Even though its a older model it still looks good.
Well it was a good model for its day when introduced but carn't help thinking its a bit overpriced for basically a 40 year old model with minor upgrades unless you specifically want a class 110, a quick browse of ebay and I can get a good condition Bachmann class 108 for similar money which is a much more up to date model with working lights etc.
I got my "Calder Vale" 3-car set a couple years ago. I paid £65 as a "non-runner". I just serviced it and it now runs quite sweetly. One of my best deals actually.
I remember these! I had a choice of a 3 car in the refurbished white or a 2 car in blue. I bought the former ( should have got the blue one..) and only sold it as a part exchange on a Bachmann 108. Still a pretty good model despite the tooling being 40+ years old, it's a good compromise between robustness and detail.. That said, older Bachmann diesels such as class 20, 25 or 37 are great budget models as well.
Marvellous video hope you had a chance to view my latest edition to the Hornby layout that I had to complete using some T scale items. NOT EASY TO PAINT. LOL back to the mode airport in this weeks video as we sit tight and try and figure out how to get the new Bachmanns into Australia. Of all the suppliers we can’t seem to get on the preorder list and as you well know your can’t buy online like I do with the Hornby site still see what happens. Stay safe & see you in the next one.
I think Hornby could make some simple upgrades to make these models better, newer couplings, more weight (no traction tyres) and pick ups in the trailer cars so you can fit lights etc.
I upgrade older Lima models ( Hornby own the toolings now ). Even the second hand Lima units have now gone up in price on FleaBay! Great video though! Thanks!
Hi Jenny that is a decent review.I have three of the Hornby RR models,the class 66 was paints,the motor didnt last very long.But i have a couple of other models and they are great! I would swap a model with a decent motor,one that would last over fine detail anyday.
Nice review. I'd quite like to see either a Class 27 or a Class 24 make it into the Hornby Railroad range. However I do think the RRP off the Class 110 is still a bit much, in my view. However, for the price you do get a fairly robust model which is ideal for young people coming into the hobby. I've been a little bit disappointed in recent years with some of Hornby's premium and highly-detailed models. Whenever I've bought a few, they either don't run well, bits break off or they don't like the points on my layout. Older models are more robust and can go around my layout with no trouble. I can't for the life of me understand why I didn't buy Railroad range stuff but customise it myself.
Yeah I gotta agree with what you say at the start! I'm going to need to check my 110 that I purchased in about 1999 because I get the impression it was much better appointed than this one. I felt the glazing clips were awful and the whole thing needlessly simple. I was expecting it to be around the £80 mark so was surprised when you gave the actual RRP. This goes back to what you said at the start, it's wonderful how models have advanced in detail and realism but half of that we don't really need! Nobody sees masses of detailed under-frame when the model is on the track, hidden details unless you take the roof off is another area of too much. I think Hornby were absolute perfection in the early 2000s with for example their Merchant Navy class locos, incredible viewable detail, remarkable mechanism and really good value. I hope eventually this race you speak of will be dialed back which in turn should reduce the costs, in turn making basic models like this much cheaper and so affordable. I've no idea what kids get as pocket money now, I used to get 50p a week back in the 70s and wagons cost £1.99 then, wonder how that works out with inflation???
CAN'T BELIEVE THAT slaters did a flushglaze set for this , hornby did the glazing superb and it only needed cab glazing can't understand why hornby didn't do the cab glazing flush too after such a good job of the side windows ,, did more miles than some drivers in the cabs of 110s in the late 70s
It was all going well until the glazing fell out! It looks okay going around the track, but its inherent cheapness lets it down. The traction tyres and the stalling on the points is going back in time. On the other hand, as a static exhibit on a preserved line, it looks the part! Thanks for uploading.

So its still a Toss up between, New Model vs Food..! Hornby still fond of their 'Big D' coupling, they couldn't have improved that for a New Version..!! BR generally got rid of got rid of 1st class for local services in the early 80's, by the time they became 2 car units towards the end all 1st class had been downgraded.

At the price hornby want for this its still to expensive for me, unless you're in a well paid job or you come from a well of family they are about the only people who can afford hornby price. I will have to wait and see what the second hand market price are on Ebay or if it is heavily discounted at a retail.
Or alternatively you could find the original older models with the older ringfield motor. These can still be DCC fitted if required and they still look good.
Why is this too expensive? Is it the price against the quality and detail or just the price full stop? If it’s just on price then it’s cheap for a new 2 car train. If it’s based on detail against price, against some second hand prices yes but again for brand new, it’s reasonable
Other Railroad plus models seem better value to me too, I agree. If I was in the market for a dmu, I think I'd go for a 20yo bachmann 108 off eBay, lights, no TTs etc, just over half this price
@@bentullett6068 already have a DMU I brought second hand of Ebay about two years ago runs well in green I am happy with the only thing can't remember the price exactly I think it was about £45 pounds that included the postage and packaging .

Not necessarily. When I was 10 I longed for a decent DMU as those were the trains I most often saw at my local station. That’s why I coveted my Trix Trans-Pennine Class 124 as it was the only good DMU model manufactured at the time.

Totally overpriced for what they are. Cheap universal motor bogie with only two wheel drive. Tooling that paid for itself 30 years ago. Let’s break it down the two car set £125, which means you are paying £100 for the motor coach and £25 for the un-powered trailer. That’s not a bargain. Better to pick up the one of the old units at less than £50 buy a cd motor conversion kit, fit extra pick ups, total cost £65! Time to stop justifying Hornby’s extortionate prices.
People need to remember these are just plastic models with cheap Chinese motors stuffed into them, if I can buy a replacement motor from China for £3 or £4 how are hornby buying them for? Honestly I wouldn’t pay any more than £50 for this, so if my boy had a paper route at £10 per week, he only needs to do that for 13 weeks and spend nothing on anything thing else to get a 20-30 year old model…………. Or several second hand locomotives from our local shop the same tooling at 30-40 each hmmmm even at the highest price of £40 he could get 3 for the price of this 1 loco

People are either can’t justify or can’t afford new so will start to look at second hand outlets driving the price of second hand models upwards. I have shown reasoning to the arguments i have made now please try and justify why the rr+ locomotive should cost 125 even tho cost of tooling was covered many decades ago and a motor won’t cost more than a few pounds at most………………… I will be very interested to see an intelligent response from you, and perhaps see what you are going on about.
When will Hornby ever learn? Traction tyres (especially on a DMU which will never be required to pull heavy loads) will degrade and split over time making the model useless. Even when new they spread dirt around your track and badly restrict the electrical pick up resulting in even more stalls on the now dirty track. Never buy anything with traction tyres.
That body to chassis mechanism is the worst thing I have ever seen. This is meant for newcomers to the hobby?! Jesus H Christ Hornby work out what screws are for gods sake!!
hi, the clowns at hornby have still overpriced this dmu, where is a child going to get all that money from ? the only way in for children is through E bay where you can buy cheaper locos and rolling stock, i have bought many wagons and coaches for under £16 pounds,
For a beginner though these are ideal as they don't have fiddly details that break off and compared to the cost of the newer Bachmann versions these are a much better buy for starter's in the hobby. As Jenny stated you can modify these to give them a better appearance.
Excellent, positive and helpful review, thank you. I was wavering about getting one of these but you’ve now highlighted its potential. There must be a market for someone, if not Hornby themselves, to sell comprehensive super-detailing packs and instructions with models such as these.
The fact this is £130 for one single train, and you're calling it a "budget" model, is exactly why this hobby is dying out. I like trains, I like the idea of a model railway... but £130 for a cheap train is just absurd I'd love to get into the hobby but there's just no way I'm going to drop this kind of money on a single unit for my setup

Yeah I don't think the 2 Blue was very accurate as by the time they were reduced to 2 cars they were all Blue/Grey.

At the price hornby want for this its still to expensive for me, unless you're in a well paid job or you come from a well of family they are about the only people who can afford hornby price. I will have to wait and see what the second hand market price are on Ebay or if it is heavily discounted at a retail.
Or alternatively you could find the original older models with the older ringfield motor. These can still be DCC fitted if required and they still look good.
Why is this too expensive? Is it the price against the quality and detail or just the price full stop? If it’s just on price then it’s cheap for a new 2 car train. If it’s based on detail against price, against some second hand prices yes but again for brand new, it’s reasonable
Other Railroad plus models seem better value to me too, I agree. If I was in the market for a dmu, I think I'd go for a 20yo bachmann 108 off eBay, lights, no TTs etc, just over half this price
@@bentullett6068 already have a DMU I brought second hand of Ebay about two years ago runs well in green I am happy with the only thing can't remember the price exactly I think it was about £45 pounds that included the postage and packaging .
@@Jonnyuk365 like I said not everyone has a that sort of cash some of us have to stick to a budget and set a spend limit on how much we can spend on are hobby's because of food prices going up, rent price going up, petrol or diesel prices going up, council tax going up, gas and electricity prices going up ect,ect and that if we can afford to spend any money on are hobby's at all and not having to sale an item of to buy another Item that we want for the hobby.

Not necessarily. When I was 10 I longed for a decent DMU as those were the trains I most often saw at my local station. That’s why I coveted my Trix Trans-Pennine Class 124 as it was the only good DMU model manufactured at the time.
@@TeesbroughWell, you say it. Those were the trains you saw then. Those are not the trains 10 year olds see today. I’m sure there are exceptions, but out of 100 today’s kids, 99 would prefer a round nosed HST or one of those Japanese bullet trains.
And my son thought my spending £175 on a NIR Hunslet DL at The North Down Model Railway expo this afternoon was expensive. He spends much more than that on tech.

Totally overpriced for what they are. Cheap universal motor bogie with only two wheel drive. Tooling that paid for itself 30 years ago. Let’s break it down the two car set £125, which means you are paying £100 for the motor coach and £25 for the un-powered trailer. That’s not a bargain. Better to pick up the one of the old units at less than £50 buy a cd motor conversion kit, fit extra pick ups, total cost £65! Time to stop justifying Hornby’s extortionate prices.
People need to remember these are just plastic models with cheap Chinese motors stuffed into them, if I can buy a replacement motor from China for £3 or £4 how are hornby buying them for? Honestly I wouldn’t pay any more than £50 for this, so if my boy had a paper route at £10 per week, he only needs to do that for 13 weeks and spend nothing on anything thing else to get a 20-30 year old model…………. Or several second hand locomotives from our local shop the same tooling at 30-40 each hmmmm even at the highest price of £40 he could get 3 for the price of this 1 loco

@@Haymarket47 last time i checked they do, the sun, mirror, telegraph, guardian and many others are still being produced, so somebody is buying them, and lets pretend for 1 min that they are gone, does that mean Hornby, Bachman and others should charge what they like?, let’s remember the current children are the next generation to be interested into the world of model railways, how off putting is it going to be for a youngster to purchase a modern flying Scotsman for nearly £200 and then 3 coaches at £40 each and perhaps a starter set at 100 to get a small circle of track, so all in all he/she will have a crappy 0-4-0 same tool used for about 25+ years and 2 small wagons, a flying Scotsman and a small rake of coaches for the price of a ps5!!!!!

People are either can’t justify or can’t afford new so will start to look at second hand outlets driving the price of second hand models upwards. I have shown reasoning to the arguments i have made now please try and justify why the rr+ locomotive should cost 125 even tho cost of tooling was covered many decades ago and a motor won’t cost more than a few pounds at most………………… I will be very interested to see an intelligent response from you, and perhaps see what you are going on about.

When will Hornby ever learn? Traction tyres (especially on a DMU which will never be required to pull heavy loads) will degrade and split over time making the model useless. Even when new they spread dirt around your track and badly restrict the electrical pick up resulting in even more stalls on the now dirty track. Never buy anything with traction tyres.
Horrifically overpriced for something that hasn't been updated in 40 years. You can pick up a decent example for £40 or less at a swap meet.

hi, the clowns at hornby have still overpriced this dmu, where is a child going to get all that money from ? the only way in for children is through E bay where you can buy cheaper locos and rolling stock, i have bought many wagons and coaches for under £16 pounds,
Traction tires make this a disposable toy. It is not acceptable to create future, unecyclable garbage in 2024.
To my eyes, the tooling does look rather dated and a lot of the details in particular look soft.
For a beginner though these are ideal as they don't have fiddly details that break off and compared to the cost of the newer Bachmann versions these are a much better buy for starter's in the hobby. As Jenny stated you can modify these to give them a better appearance.
Excellent, positive and helpful review, thank you. I was wavering about getting one of these but you’ve now highlighted its potential. There must be a market for someone, if not Hornby themselves, to sell comprehensive super-detailing packs and instructions with models such as these.
The fact this is £130 for one single train, and you're calling it a "budget" model, is exactly why this hobby is dying out. I like trains, I like the idea of a model railway... but £130 for a cheap train is just absurd
I'd love to get into the hobby but there's just no way I'm going to drop this kind of money on a single unit for my setup
