Nicole I am in a similar situation to you where I have a JAL business class flight from Boston to Narita later this year, and I'd like to add on a positioning flight from Philly to Boston. Does this trick only work with certain fare codes on American's website? There are plenty of points-available flights from PHL-BOS, but I know you said you received an alert that the flight from MIA-DFW was available, so that makes me think it may need to be in a certain fare code. Any tips? Also, is it possible to add on a leg once you get to Japan also?
Someone set an alert for me on Expert Flyer to notify me when the space became available. You can call AA and ask if there is availability on the leg you want. Have a few options to choose from if the one you want is not available.
