- In depth review of my '88 928S4 as well as some footage driving it. The S4 is probably the best bang for your buck in the 928 world. If you want a manual you might have to scoot down market a bit though to the S as the 5 speed S4s and GTs are getting quite expensive!
928s are a great supercar from the 80s and 90s and so much fun to drive!

Great video James. Have had my 83 928S Euro 5speed, 301hp about 20 years (in Italy). Had engine overhauled due to rad mishap. All perfect again now. Yours sounds great. Tech issues would be great to here about. 928 - timeless design and as you said, performance still up to snuff for today. Thanks

As a 14 year old I really strive to own one one day. Unfortunately they have been increasing in price, so its very unlikely I would be able to afford not only the cost, but insuring and maintaining the car 😔

If you are dedicated to your studies and to your career you will likely make enough money to be able to afford a 928 at some point in your life. if you just go where the wind blows and do not have a dedicated plan and direction for your schooling and career then perhaps the 928 will remain out of reach. I have faith that you will seek a great career that suits you and you will be great at it and will in fact have a 928 sooner rather than later! Keep the faith and study hard!
Hi, you seemed to of missed out the euro spec 928 S2 which was the last of the 1st series before the S4 facelift. S2’s were in a dark blue and deep burgundy.
They incorporated alot of the suspension mechanics of the 928 S4. S2’s are desirable as they share alot of the mechanicals of the S4 that came after. Not sure the S2’s were introduced to the American market.
The Euro S2 car started for the Euro market in 84. To my knowledge they never had any of the S4 suspension upgrades. That was the US S3 car which is referred to as the 86.5 car. The S4 suspension came on that 86 car starting at VIN 1000. Any 928 was available in any color though. The color of the car had nothing to do with the engine or running gear. I think the 88 Club Sport cars had limited color choices but they were still available in 3-4 different colors iirc.
@@pcar928fan Interesting, I understand the S2 was offered to the european market around 85/86 as more of a last series 1 limited edition . It wasn’t a mainstream model as the previous S and 928 models due to its limited run. Porsche had developed alot of the mechanicals for the S4 before launch of the S2 and applied some of the mechanicals to the S2. - I understand this to be braking and suspension. Most 928 specialists in the UK refer to the S2 as the most reliable of the series 1 due to sharing some of its machicals with its successor the S4. I thought the US got also the S2 however according to yourself a S3 was introduced.
@@2many2say that is incorrect. The S2 was just the S series 928 with the up dated fuel injection system on the 4.7 engine. They went to dual distributors and L-jet fuel injection and made 310HP (though some suspect it was closer to 330). The “2” was used to simply and easily distinguish the dual distributor 84-86 car Euro S 928’s from the 80-83 Euro S with the 300HP single distributor cars. As an aside, this is only a problem in countries that don’t seem to understand that the manufacturer tells you what year model your car is…it has nothing to do with when it was sold new. In the UK they think a car is an “XYZ” model year because it was sold in that “XYZ” year, when in fact it could, in theory, be a 20 year old car that was never titled. Across the pond they need that S, S2, S3, S4 designation. We don’t need it in the US or the rest of Europe because we read the model year from the VIN and so when we quote a model year of a car it is based on what the manufacturer says the model year is, not when the car was sold. The S3 was the 5.0 928 S from 85/86 that was built for the US market (but was apparently also available as a special order for the Euro market…I just learned that a few weeks ago). The 86.5 model received the brakes and suspension of the S4 models. The S2 cars never had any S4 suspension and were never a special 928 model. The only “special” 928 models were the Sport in the UK and the Club Sport in Europe. Those were both S4 based cars. Some consider the ‘89 GT to be a “special” car, but it really isn’t. It was more of a name change from the S4 to distinguish between the 5 speed and automatic cars in the late S4 line up. There were a couple of special edition S1 cars to honor a Porsche anniversary iirc.

My then gf's brother had a 928 back in the 80's. I got to ride in it and fell in love (with the car i mean). Now i've got a s4 in the garage. Still the best looking vehicle I ever saw. Cheers.
Right on! To have a 928 in the 1980's one would need to have been making a LOT of money! They were very expensive when new!

I've always loved the 928. Amazing looking cars and the design is pretty much timeless. Mercedes AMG even copied that design (somewhat) to their GT model. Never goes out of style. Great video, great information. Thanks.
Totally agree with you! Many have said how much th AMG GT resembles a 928 from certain angles! Such amazing cars!

I just acquired a 89 S4 Auto. In the process of getting it road worthy. Thanks for explaining the differences in S4 years. Not a fan of the 89 digital dash and the 87/88 rear window antenna.
I agree on the 87/88 antenna, but it is in the windshield, not the rear window. Which makes those windshields super expensive if you have to replace them. Heck, you might not even be able to find them anymore. They also have an FM signal booster somewhere over by the engine computers and mine has gone out so I can't even listen to the radio at this point. So frustrating!
Actually, I think a great idea for future videos would be maintenance issues. Timing belt, water pump, AC, brakes, motor mounts, electrical, gauges, interior, transmission, tires, fuel system, power steering, etc. I am into my 928 for a bit over $40,000 now and purchased it for $22,000 last July.
Unfortunately being in a wheelchair I can’t reach much stuff to work on the cars, so I don’t see a lot of maintenance videos in my future, but if I can do some I certainly will! Thanks so much for the comments!

Max, I had an E46 M3 cab, and a V10 M6 cab. Really loved the E46. The M6 was fast, but expensive to maintain...even compared to a 928! Thanks for the comment!
Great videos, keep them coming. Have had my 85 euro for almost a year now. Fantastic car, just more maintenance cost than I expected but have come to accept the high cost of owning a quality example.
They are ALWAYS a lot of work! I paid about $2750 for a ‘78 and then, to catch up on things and make nice (though not perfect) I spent another $25,000!!! Yowza! Will do a video on that one soon!

Never!! If you prefer the S body style to the others then the ultimate car for you is the 86.5! Not to mention those 85/86 engines have much hotter cams than the S4 or GTS and can really be tuned well!!

Nice video James. Despite owning an ‘88 S4 auto, and being a pretty enthusiastic researcher of these cars I always learn something I didn’t know from your series. Good point on the ‘89’s gear ratios... but a counter point for the 87/88 is the analog (pre-digital) dash. When the digital dash fails, the car can be immobile and replacements are super expensive and rare.
Very good point on the digital dash! I like them and, knocking on wood, have never had one fail, but you are quite correct...if they do fail...UGH! BIG TIME! That said I’m not sure how small a fender bender might set off the airbags in a 90+ car. Like I said about the ‘88 I rear ended that car and while my car barely looked damaged it still might have been enough to set off the airbags, which likely would have totaled the car. So I am going to stick with my ‘89 recommendation. I didn’t mention it in this video but my recommendation is always: 89,88,87, 86.5, 86/85... I almost never recommend the 90/91 models because of airbags and digital dash actually. Thanks for watching and commenting! So happy to have you here!

You have my twin!! How many miles do you have on yours? What condition is it in? I have 99k miles on mine. I got it with like 50k miles, so in 26 years I have put 50k miles on it! @@pcar928fan Yes, I did the RMB soon after I got it. People are amazed how good it sounds, many do not know Porsche made a V-8 and think it’s a 4 or 6. I have to admit sometimes I miss the factory exhaust, refined but throaty when you got after it. I like your rims, mine has Cup-IIs which I love as well, gives it that GTS look. I still can’t get over both of us having the dice in nearly the same car! May the Force be with you.
@@y.t.928 I love the RMB. Both GTS have them and the S4 of course. About 15 years ago I actually had a Mustang guy compliment me on the exhaust note of the S4! That is really saying something too because a well tuned Mustang exhaust is very hard to beat! His car sounded fantastic too and must have been modified because it was freaking fast! Have you been to Galaxy’s Edge yet. Batuu is definitely the place to go for ANY Star Wars fan! Maybe the force be with you!

Great video, James. Your S4 seems pretty well sorted. I'm currently working my way through many issues with my '87 S4 auto, almost all of them caused by lack of maintenance by previous owners. As a Brit, I appreciate the "properly quick" reference in the video too! :) Look forward to seeing more content in the future.
No surprise there! They are great cars but not cheap to maintain! That said, cheaper than my V10 M6 cab was! I got rid of that car fast! It was ridiculous!

coming off of lease in 94...cannot find one today under 25k worth anything...so In the interrum i have 'settled' on
a 2000 Carrera White 996 911 tiptronic...it is not the same ride, different and less "road feel"
Yes very different drive for sure. The only 996 I’ve found that can compare favorably to a GTS or an S4 is the Turbo 996. If you don’t mind an automatic S4 there are some nice ones out there in the 25k-30k range. Gotta add at least 10k to that if you want a manual. 928 prices have slowly been going up so I expect that trend to continue for top notch examples. I expect 986/997 prices to drop quickly once new 911 are back in stock and easy to get. Crazy artificial inflation on those this last year. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Hello from a fellow Texan! I’ve been looking at and for 928’s for about 10 years now. I’m getting close to finally purchasing one in the next year or so. At this point I almost don’t care whether it’s an auto or a manual. I just want to get one before they go to the moon. I’m in the Houston area. Are you down here? Great job with your channel!
Thanks so much. I am in the Austin area. I don’t think you need to worry. I’d wait 12 months before I buy ANY used car though. The used car market has been nuts. So, hang tight and keep looking. I don’t think 928s will experience the insanity that we have seen with the 911 and I think the 911 values are going to back off substantially in the next 12 months. Time will tell on that, but it is my gut feeling. The 5 speed 928s are always going to be more valuable than the autos. In the case of the GTS, substantially more valuable. Don Carter down in Houston is a great 928 resource and I am happy to help you any way I can, so that you get the best car for your money. They are fantastic cars…otherwise I would not have had 15 of them! LOL! Still have 5, wish I could afford a place to keep all my past cars!

The S4 is definitely the best bang for the buck in 928 as far as I am concerned! Though if you can afford a GTS, I highly recommend them!
My 1986 Porsche 928S 5peed same color has LSD, ABS, turbo rims from 993, Magnaflow Cat back, and a short shift lever, The 288hp 1986 model weighs way less than the S4 and GTS.
Sounds like you have a sweet ride! The 86.5 is a killer model! Best of the S for sure, regular 86 and 85 are no slouches! I bet your exhaust sounds fantastic!
@@pcar928fan Actually mine is not the 86.5 but came with those options without the bigger brakes and dual exhaust. I did remove the 20hp autothority performance chips not worth the extra fuel in 2021 with cars having 700hp and EVs doing 0-60 under 4 sec. lol
