I think that can still be a very good story telling moment with the dice not shaking out, i think it strengthens character motivations that such a heartfelt speech fell on deaf ears
I think it's interesting so many people (in universe) are whole heartedly like "Yeah! F*** the gods!" while Laudna and Orym, while not on "Team Gods" per say, are both leary about what would replace the gods. Which makes sense since they have both seen what people with God Complexes can do (Laudna with Delilah and Orym with the Ruby Vanguard). When you stop to think about it, yeah the gods and they're relationship with mortals is not entirely equal or at times even fair. But at the same time when you stop to think about how people like Delilah and Ludinus might be the ones to step up and take their places, all of a sudden the question of "Would the world be better without the current gods?" gets a lock murkier
It is really up Liam's alley too, because it's just an extrapolation of Hamlet's favorite question: to be or not to be? Hamlet is given pause when considering the relative virtues of unaliving oneself because of the mere that the afterlife beyond the event horizon of death is unknowable. To suffer the slings and arrows you know is at least fathomable. To risk the suffering of those beyond your ken seems brave to a fault. As Hamlet puts it, conscience makes cowards of us all. Orym and Laudna have possibly the strongest consciences on the team, and it's really cool to see that play out.
i would add that ashton also has dissented pretty hard to the notion that ludinus’ version of events might be beneficial in the past! i don’t think he has much faith in the gods but he definitely does not trust those who would seek to replace them. it’s interesting to me that they kept so quiet in this episode, barely saying a word after the crew met abbadina. it feels to me like they know they’re getting a bad deal for the scry spell but are unwilling to risk potential information about their lost friends by telling these people to fuck off.
A friend of mine had this pretty crazy idea that relates to this: how the fact that the gods didn’t seem to lift a finger to stop Ludi & Co carries a couple of implications; either the gods didn’t care because they’re so powerful, beyond what people commonly think (including Ludi) that it doesn’t actually matter if he ‘succeeds’, because they can’t actually be harmed by this ‘God Eater’; or that they’re so pathetically powerless that it won’t matter if they die anyway ( which I think is what Ludi was trying to prove with this stunt). Either way it kind of makes him look like a dumbass for obsessing for eight centuries over something that either won’t work or won’t matter.
@@Vespuchian One important thing that seems to get glossed over when people like Ludinus keep saying "the god have done nothing for us!" is that all the gods, both the good and the bad, are kept from interfering with the material plane directly by the Divine Gate. Of which the Prime Deities erected specifically so the more genocidal members of the Betrayer Gods wouldn't be able to nuke all intelligent life off the face of the planet. So I'd say less "Pathetic and powerless" as their hands are metaphysically tied. But yeah, "the gods are pathetic" certainly seems to be how Ludinus wants to spin it. And yeah, I completely agree it makes him seem like a dumbass. And truly bonkers. Because at this point society does seem to be functioning quite well with only semi-intervention from the gods, and society one day fully achieving independence is a nice idea, but taking that idea to "We should kill all the gods!" is a bit extreme. To me it'd kind of be like if your parents or grandparents bought a house and let you live in it by paying a very affordable rent, but then you go "If they loved me they wouldn't make me pay rent!" and tried to sic a man eating tiger on them. It's like "Dude, I know you want to own the house outright someday, but maybe tone down the murderous impulse." 'Course with the other team we now know that Ludinus probably had moon Cthulu whispering in his ear since before the calamity, so the dude's probably just a teensy bit absolutely insane by now
@@astralluna Very much so. Ashton may resent idle authority, but they distrust delusional, self aggrandizing, power hunger authority even more. And I must admit, at first I was surprised that a couple of gang were voicing their support of "Yeah! Fuck the gods!" but it didn't take me long to realize that when dealing with cultists the smart thing to do is not to contradict them to their faces
This episode made me realise how unfortunate (yet understandable) Liam's decision to play a "less centre stage" character really is. One of the few times you put him in the spotlight and he casually drops the most cinematic and baller speech imaginable and _still manages to be badass_ when persuasion doesn't work and combat starts.
I dunno. Orym may have been designed to be just a little guy, but he has big Captain America energy. It's not the first time hes had a Bad Ass Good Guy moment. "That may be, Imogen. I just wish my friends and family didn't have to die for her better world."
@@SeanBoyce-gp It'll be interesting to see how the group shakes out over the next couple of sessions. Because yeah, Orym to me was always the natural pick for the team leader but he has/had a natural tendency to defer to others. So now that there's a need for a strong team leader, it'll be interesting to see how Orym reacts
@@SeanBoyce-gp Even his debut episode (EXU 1x1) when Dariax says that most people are corrupt and Orym responds: "I know that you're wrong. I know that there's more in this world. I know that temptation and corruption and imperfection is rampant in this world, but that's not all there is."
It's not quite DnD Beyond 2 minute Network parody monologue/speech thing (C2E72) level, but it's good indeed. ^^ "MORDENKAINEN IS RRRROOOOOLLING IN HIS GRAAAAAVE!"
He can't keep playing emo lads. I actually think Orym might be as close to Liam as he will comfortably let us see. I mean, he chose a character name that is nearly his own. He uses his own voice. Orym is pensive, reserved, honorable and sweet. Liam is our sensitive and vulnerable boy. He wears oversized sweaters and hides his hands in the sleeves. Liam's body language reveals a fair amount of insecurity at times. I think Orym is his expression of how one can be strong, passionate, stable and relevant despite looking and maybe feeling small and inadequate. I like Orym for that very reason. Liam is telling us something with him.
@Elle-chan closest we will ever see him to being a bard is those College of Tragedy ads. 😅 I'm with Liam though. My one attempt at playing a bard ended on the first combat. 😆
@PeTTs0n88 Something like that. I failed so epically as a bard in 2nd edition D&D, that my DM had to describe for the group in graphic detail while laughing his ass off how a half-orc tavern brawler forced my lute up a passage that wasn't meant for items of that size.
Emily is SUCH a chaos gremlin! 😅 And her having spells?! The bane of Brennan Lee Mulligan?! And it seems like she and Utkarsh are just vibing off eachother to create even more mayhem, it's absolutely glorious!
Many people have mentioned that last weeks timestamps somehow rolled a high stealth roll to pop up on this weeks episode. I want to mention that I look forward to these videos almost as much as i do this weeks episode of Critical Role 💚
Sometimes in life it's too hectic to make time to watch CR, and it feels daunting to even start an episode - I'm so glad you are putting these together so I can stay clued in and get a little seratonin boost when I need it :) Thanks
I appreciate this channel so much. I watch the full episodes but there are so many details and moments I still miss, and callbacks to earlier seasons (& memes 😂) I don’t remember / know. Makes these vids a must watch each week.
Orym: roleplays an Iminently reasonable request, eloquently put argument, with evidence to back it up, throwing jabs at things that are undeniably true and add to the validity of his point Matt: Roll two dice to see if your roleplay in this roleplaying game matters at all
I mean ultimately dice are involved if there's any chance at all, and Orym's request was too demanding and complex to just resolve without a roll. He still had advantage, just didn't work out.

Yaaay
Yay will watch again! Your humour in naming them is the best part of these vids 😍
Honestly I watch as much for your chapter titles as I do for the clips themselves lol
Emily, Utkarsh, and Aimee are SUCH a delight at the table as guests. I hope Prism gets to meet Chetney one day. That would be hysterical.
I’m ready to see guards shit their brains out while Prism summons a demon because nobody disrespects my best boy Orym like this
You just know she's going to keep trying with that demon now just to be stubborn.

“Someone make her touch Ashley’s Dice” had me CRYING 😂
I can’t wait for Emily to declare that one of the bad guys is wearing a silly vest and have matt just go with it
Liam's speech was SO GOOD! I was so sad about the dice roll.
Yeah, that’s one where I feel the pain that this wasn’t exo rules 😢.

I absolutely adore this group. Look at how badly Aimee wanted to start rolling her dice at the end! The energy is infectious!
She had that Ashley energy at the end. "NoooooooOOoOOOoo"
It’s hard to hear, but Travis calling Marisha “Thunder over Louisville “ as she’s trying to say Illuminated Worlds made me laugh super-hard.
