Buongiorno Signor JOHANNSEN. La Ringrazio per accompagnarci nel mondo delle testine fonografiche, e negli stili di lettura. 🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️👍👍👍👏👏👏
Nice explanation. Although, as it is constantly said in the video the amount of contact area between the groove and the stylus is important, it does not talk about the quality that the material must have to transmit the vibrations to the cantilever, which will eventually become the voltage of the audio signal, which is also important. In the case of needles that are not naked and are mounted on a titanium support, for example, the change of material also affects, not only the smaller contact surface.
Another great video with all the info you could ask for. So thank you again for explaining everything that needs to be told to everyone out there who wants to go on this journey with Vinyl music.
It's funny that you spoke how close you can get to the cutting needle in shape before it starts to destroy the groove/ vinyl because that question arrived for me at just that moment.
Currently running a Exact2 cart on my Rega TT. The cantilever is slightly off center but it still tracks and sounds VERY good. Excited to try one of the Ortofon products when I'm in need for a new stylus.
This video is about the stylus shape, but worth reminding ( to those who think to into the LP concept ) : The cantilever is also a very important part of this system. If it isn't stiff enough, it will "wobble" in high frequencies, causing noise/distortion. The weight of the moving segment is very important - must be as less as possible ( no one explains why ). The more of it - the harder for the stylus to "accelerate" - move fast. It will skip the "bends" and - noise.... The magnet / coils must be able to create sufficient output in low freq. otherwise - no bass ...... And there's more stuff..... So yes - this IS a pretty complicated system, but it's not the factor that dictates the price 🤷♂
Great series that demystifies some of the jargon used in cartridge specs and perhaps highlights audible gains from better profiles require more careful cartridge set up - especially Shibata ........ Great educational video that clearly explains the virtues of different stylus geometry. Thank you Ortofon!
I’m intrigued that some modest M/C’s have a specification as good as if not better than some exotic cartridges that cost 10 times as much. They also have boron cantilevers and quality stylus profiles and yet the price difference, it’s a mystery.
My new turntable arrived a few days ago equipped with the OM10 (ProJect/NAD C558) - which is the best I've ever heard any record sound in my home. However, I'm already dying to hear how much better the OM20 might sound. Is there something wrong with me? 🤔😆
Can anyone comment on styli shapes when they encounter dust on a record? What is the best way to clean records before each play. Thank you for this great series!
Ultrasonic cleaner by far the best way set to 36 c degrees isopropyl alcohol 15% distilled water 7 drops of dawn dishwashing detergent then a rinse bay with dishwashing rinse aid . I dry my records on a bamboo dish rack with fans to avoid pooling
The following comment does NOT criticize this VIDEO - which is GREAT and very entertaining !! ...... All this industry is a "very smart one" !!! Today it is far cheaper to produce the cartridges, with all the parts, than in the 80s. So if THEN a GOOD cartridge could be purchased for reasonable price, today, the prices for +/- fine quality are, simply INSANE ! The diamonds, today, are grown artificially. The stylus should not be SO expensive, but the companies charge MORE money, making this hobby, only for the RICHEST ! It's possible to get a cheap TT with a +/- ok cartridge, but it will sound accordingly 🤷♂Yes - the demand dictates the price, but if the affordable things sound poorly, people will simply stop using.
If only more affordable cartridges would be released with a Replicant 100. I'm interested in that one, but shelling out 6k is a bit too much for just trying something new.
I opened the clip being interested about cartriges not styluses becuse in my opinion not the contacting end of stylus makes greatest differences between cartriges. I used three different types of B&O MM cartriges which had 3 different kinds of stylus - spheric, eliptyc and full contact and differences are only small. My colege uses ortofon recommended by reviewers and it does not compare to any of my styluses because his cartrige and arm is no comparably heavier than in my turntable and tracking force is double that of mine (I have only 1 gramm) ,. Thus he has problems to walk around his playing sophisticated Sony while I can brush manualy LP even during playing Surprisingly the condition of my produced in 60ties and 70ties LPs due to cleaning with each playing do not degrade but improves only. This are differences I care about.
Why do we need so many different profiles of stylus? It's so the manufacturers can convince people that the more you spent the better it will be. When in reality we only need one profile of stylus, and thats the one that best suits the industry standard of grove cut into the vinyl. But if they do that, bang goes their profit, and their dominence over you is gone.
The cost of upgrading anything is purely outrageous and unacceptable. No wonder there are billion dollar companies and C.E.O's that make millions of dollars.
I too have followed the whole series and found it very interesting and informative. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
It’s amazing really how good a piece of vinyl can sound when you break it down.
What are the best styli shapes for different records - old shellac, old mono, later mono, styrene, early stereo and later stereo?
Thank you so much!

I bought my first Ortofon product yesterday :)

Fabulous video, reason why I bought the Quintet Black S
Many thanks for these, I've really enjoyed the series, very clearly explained.

Hi, I've had an OM20 on my Kyocera PL-701 and thoroughly loved it. I bought a 2nd one..
Can anyone comment on styli shapes when they encounter dust on a record?
What is the best way to clean records before each play.
Thank you for this great series!
Use a micro bristle toothbrush to clean a record. They are Chinese and are usually advertised as 10000 - 20000 bristles.
shabata styli get all the dirt out

Kindly publish video how to repair cracks on record/ disc upto some extent & how to repair cracks for which stylus jumps on record.

One question about 2M Mono. Is the replacement stylus of 2M Mono SE compatible with the 2M Mono standard cartridge?
Question i have a ortofon 5e cartridge can i put an om20 or om30 stylus on that cartridge . I'm led to believe you can ?
If only more affordable cartridges would be released with a Replicant 100.

I’ve heard that conical round styli are best for styrene 45 rpm records. True or false?
I’d like an answer to that as well…
You had à v.d.hul 2, OM40
So usefull

I don't even, use Shibata - it WILL ruin the record.

Where you get your numbers from? No mention of costs in this video… btw the plural of CEO is simply CEOs. You don’t need to use an apostrophe…
@bristolfashion4421 Okay thanks for the correction.
