Shirley Temple adored this man and said he was her favorite dance partner. Mr. Robinson surely was a great dancer and well loved in the entertainment industry.
Nobody can get even close to the finesse, gazellest, elegance and agility of the great Bojangles.

Bojangles not only knew how to dance beautifully but also he knew how to act. Can’t say the same for the other adult actors there.

The stair dance was done differently than the original because Disney didn't have the rights to the choreography, but they had the rights to make the dance similar but not the exact same as the original.

Actually, the dance was never patented, so rights were never an issue. Bojangles did try to patent the dance, but it was denied. Disney was never involved; Bojangles himself would have been the rights holder if it had gone through.
They changed the dance because it was too technically demanding for Shirley to learn in the 2 days they had to prepare for it. She may have been a great dancer, but she was still only 7 years old when it was filmed.
Bojangles changed the dance for the film himself. He added in the riser kicks and simplified Shirley's moves to make it look like she was following his lead.
