In honor of the holiday, as well as pretty convenient timing on FromSoftware's part, I've decided to look back at one of their most odd but beloved Mech action titles, Metal Wolf Chaos. A game all about being the American President, in a Mech suit, exclusive to the Xbox as well as only available in Japan, this title is easily one of the most unique for the platform. So what about it is so special? Well let's take a look...

I remember watching the Super Best Friends play this game and remember them having as much fun as you did and it was a great watch overall.

I remember when I first saw this game at GDQ this was after the event went full CORPO. This game breathed life back into that sad convention that we hadn't seen in years. This game is the best.
It’s my dream as a VA to get into a game or a movie like metal wolf chaos. A lot of auditions these days for paying companies want conversational, like you are talking in a podcast and it just kills me. All call outs on Ada’s voice performance is good (especially if it’s geared to the director)

9:00 The presence of giant robots using one-for-one copies or real world firearms is something that comes up more often than you'd think in Giant Robot shows. If you dig the aesthetic, look up Pat Labor. The tv series and the two 2d animated films are very good, and have cranes loading individual limousine sized bullets into a .44 magnum revolver the size of a winnebago.
Even in armored core, some of the shotguns are like, semi truck sized regular shotguns
Imagine fromsoftware coming out with a Metal Wolf 2. If we could get that and a Metal Gear Rising Revengence 2, it’d be a match made in heaven.
What I would say about the Voice Acting in MWC is that the VAs had a lot of fun doing it, hamming and cheesing it up to make a delicious dubbing sandwich

Every day that passes, I hope Fromsoft references Metal Wolf Chaos in an Armored Core game, or make a sequel. Like bro, it's the most American game ever and it was made by Fromsoft.
Also, if i remeber correctly, fromsoft had a mini-Interconnected Universe where either Michael Wilson or his father appears as the President in Ninja Blade. I kinda hope one day Fromsoft returns to those games. They were wacky fun imo

Hard agree with the Phoenix stage being best for grinding. Short, filled with loot, and has a fun mech brawl at the end, just the right balance of factors. I have played that one stage more times than I can count and I never got bored of it, even when plowing through it at breakneck speed with dual maxed miniguns

It's interesting you compared the graphics to the Dreamcast. The HW is only 3 years apart but that period was probably the fastest growth in consumer graphics we've seen.

i have to say weirdly enough metal wolf mech would probably closer to what a real life mech is beside how it looks.
in terms of weapon use a proper mech will probably utilize existing weapon systems. be it rifles like m4, light machine guns, or that one browning 50 cal that we have been using for years.

It's funny that you brought up Ada's voice acting from RE4make because that was my first thought when you started talking about boring voice acting.
To be fair, I think Monolith's Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is one of the only American made Mecha/FPS games that took the look of parodying sci-fi mecha anime, and I don't think it ever made it to Japan.
So checkmate.
On visuals, remaster is a downgrade from original Xbox.
Watching a side-to-side comparison shows a huge number of effects and lighting being absent in remaster, looking like a poorly emulated version.
There used to be a comparison video up on YT showing those flaws, which got "mysteriously" taken down.
Honestly who needs good graphics for this style of game? The game is a fuckin blast even if it's all bad blocky textures. This game could have modern graphics and ray tracing and it wouldn't have any effect on the fun I have playing it
Another game that fits the Japanese only release for Xbox is phantom dust which is free now 😊

I guess it depends on your world view, but it’s not exactly far fetched to imagine the military of any country going against its own people. Soldiers are broken down, and then they are reprogrammed like a machine.
Which might sound like a good idea when you don’t want a bunch of guys freaking out in the middle of a battle… but we’re not just talking about emotions getting the best of you,
it’s basically act according to your training, and follow orders.
Thinking isn’t part of the equation, so if the C.O. says “shoot that family over there, they’re housing a top terrorist” or some kind of nonsense, they don’t tend to stop and ask questions (yeah, I know. It’s absolutely terrifying to think about, especially when you come to the realization that those in charge think common people are scum)
Also Fromsoft experience with Mech games, since they did Armored Core before Souls
You can spam boost over and over to boost forever and yes miniguns and bazookas are really good. For some reason the bu variant of the second bazooka you unlock is one of the best weapons in the game which is funny. Also no you did the mission right destroying the objectives just weakens its defense. Its basically a mech version of cendtick in ds2 where everyone tells you to get all the giant souls but theres nothing stopping you from just beating him up earlier besides the defense

I feel the same with a few of the classic Star Trek, Robotech, and Yu-Gi-Oh! games that are either console exclusive or just no longer available on modern PC stores.
Many aren't available on current consoles either. I'd like to see The Punisher 2005 remastered for both current consoles and pc.
Getting to play old games in HD with stable frame rates is great. I've been having fun playing through all the Syphon Filter games that were rereleased onto PS4/PS5.

Microsoft always tried to enter the Japanese market with xbox, and they're still trying to this day. Back in the day with games like Metal Wolf Chaos and Lost Odyssey among others, and now with more and more jrpgs on Game Pass. But they inevitably fail with each generation. They just can't compete with Sony and Nintendo in Japan, people just doesn't care about xbox there.
And now they've pretty much lost the Western market to Nintendo and Sony too.
Only Game Pass keeps them afloat now. It certainly isn't exclusives like Redfall...

Excuse me? Have you played any Armored Core games? The stories are quite dark despite how limited they are (most Armored Core games have you being an unnamed, unface mercenary who doesn't care which corporation wins at the end of the day, it all about the paycheck).
Even if I never find a copy or get past the Japanese menus, the OG Xbox still reminds me that it never got bricked or had the red ring of death. As for worst voice acting in a game, I'm going to have to nominate Bethesda's deadpan Sam Coe from Starfield 😴
