  • Three-wattled bellbird (Procnias tricarunculatus) from the cloud forest of Costa Rica.
    ••• PLEASE SUBSCRIBE (WITH THE NOTIFICATION 🔔) TO SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL •••
    The male bellbird perches on high branches and opens his mouth a full 180° to make his distinctive call "bonk".
    Its name comes from the three black worm-like wattles of skin that hang from the sides and top of the bill. These wattles can be as long as 10cm (juveniles have shorter ones). The wattles remain flaccid even when extended. The male shakes the wattles, as a courtship display while making his very loud calls (some of the loudest in the world of birds).

    Are there sounds humans can't hear on these songs because it sure looks like a LOT of effort for one metallic honk. What a gorgeous color, this bird is amazing.

      There is 100% more movement in its neck than the sounds were hearing
      There are mics that can record beyond the range of human hearing. I bet if you record this bird with one of those it would show up in a waveform

      It's a lot of effort because it's a tiny bird using tiny lungs to make such a loud sound. A human doesn't have to put in that much effort to be so loud because we're much bigger, stronger, and have larger lung capacity.

    This bird is scary looking and beautiful. It's gaping black mouth is the scary part, It's song is well.... not pleasing. Unless you are a 3 Wattled Bellbird I suppose. I love the plumage and wattles. Fascinating and wonderful bird.

    This is the only thing that makes my “female” canary step down from a fight, be quiet and stop attacking my poor male canary and all the rest of the aviary. This wattle bird guy is adorable but fierce. I have this on a loop to keep her from fighting with every other bird. The fairy wrens near by in the wild are super intrigued by it lol.

    Going to CR next month and this is one of many species on my list I hope to get. There's just something about bellbirds and other cotingas I can't describe. They have an almost supernatural quality to them, especially due to the volume and perching high up on exposed branches. They are literally on another level from other birds and for me just hearing the terms "umbrellabird" or "fruitcrow" makes them seem like these ethereal, spiritual creatures

    • @DavidWeiller
      @DavidWeiller  2 года назад +4

      Thanks for your question. They don't flock but there were a few of these rare birds singing around the same area of cloudforest (like one or two every hundred meter). One fact worth noting is that their nest hve almost never been found... so they are difficult to study.
