The easiest way to explain things is that Baseball is a Spring and Summer sport, but football is a Fall and Winter sport. They really do not compete with each other.
And then there’s hockey from fall-spring that kind of bridges everything.

Absolutely! We are a real mixture of all nations and we are all into where our ancestors came from! We welcome everyone because our ancestors all came from other countries. It is a tragic part of our History how the Native Americans were treated as well as black Americans but fortunately things are much more equal now.

Chicken Fried Steak. Yes, you NEED this. It's steak cutlets that has been pounded and "tenderized", then dunked into a breaded batter and deep fried. Then served on a plate (usually covering nearly the entire plate) and smothered with cream gravy. When done right, you don't need a knife to cut the steak, it's tenderized enough to just cut it with the fork.
Don’t forget the mashed potatoes with the cream gravy!😋

When Hurricane Katrina hit NO, a lot of the people there were evacuated to other states and cities. 2 brothers came to my smaller town in Oklahoma!!! They opened an AUTHENTIC Cajun restaurant and have been a big hit here!!! People come from a couple of hundred miles away just to get authentic cajun food. They have just purchased a restaurant building thats at least 4x their original restaurant size. They've completely remodeled it, and it will be opening soon.

Baseball and American football are played in different seasons. Baseball starts in the Spring and is played through the Summer and ends early in Autumn. Football begins in September and goes through January (except for the Super Bowl in February). Generally, football begins about the same time that baseball is coming to an end.

That city with the skyline you thought was nice is Chicago, Illinois (where Lawrence lives). Chicago is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. The state of Michigan is across the lake on the eastern shore. The northwestern shore is Wisconsin.
Your accent is vaguely Slavic / Russian but with hints of Italian. Very different from both Latin American native Spanish speakers here in the US speaking English and different from Spaniards speaking English. You do sound like a couple Brazilians I used to know - but we get far fewer native Portuguese speakers here. But you are very understandable - far more so than a thick Scottish accent! And we are used to accents of tourists and immigrants here. Every region of the US has different concentrations of specific origin immigrants. Here in the Seattle area was have many Indians, Vietnamese, Japaanese and Chinese but historically we had a lot of Scandinavians. My last three Uber drivers were (1) Eritrean (2) Malaysian (3) Syrian.
People won’t necessarily ask where you are from especially in large cities that have many immigrants / tourists like NYC, LA etc.
I’m adopted so it’s complex but my adopted parents are both of Irish ancestry but biological mother is an Irish / Slovakian mix and biology father was Scottish and English. Many Americans by now are a real mix. My parents generation (silent generation) began initial intermarrying (Irish Catholics marrying Italian Catholics and the like); their kids - a few boomers but mostly Gen X are far more intermarried and our kids are now a real mix of ancestries.
Funny that Sean found Seattle people a bit less friendly. Of all the places I’ve lived, I have found New Englanders the coldest / most shut of to newcomers. Having lived in NYC and its burbs, Boston burbs, upstate NY, Orange County in California, Oregon and now outside Seattle…the Pacific Northwest folks are the friendliest of that bunch.
Yes it is a vast country. Bet advice is to pick a region and visit it in more depth. Fly into Boston and explore New England - especially in autumn. Fly into Atlanta and do the South. Etc.
Baseball and Football seasons don’t really overlap very much so both are popular. Regionally: MLB baseball is still huge especially in the northeast and California. NFL is popular nationwide but obviously focused on major cities that have teams. College football is most popular in Deep South and other areas far from bigger cities with NFL teams. All of this is an oversimplification though. The Midwest loves basketball (Indiana); NFL (Green Bay); hockey (Minnesota); college football (Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin) etc etc. All depends on time of year / passion of the fanbases / access to cities or major universities. Chicago - where they filmed this - for instance has one NFL team, one NBA team, one NHL team but 2 MLB baseball franchises (Cubs and White Sox).

If you ever come to the U.S. and come to Massachusetts on the east coast , along the southeast coast there is a large Portuguese/American community and Cape Verdeans too. My Dad came from the Azores. Love your channel
Yes Andrè we have a very large Portuguese and Cape Verdean population here in Rhode Island. Our largest ethnic group after us pale white, mixture people. We have good Portuguese food. ❤
People in the USA will probably think you're from Eastern Europe because the European "boca fechado" uses the "dark L" and has a lot of vowel reduction like slavic languages. I speak Spanish and can understand some Brazilian Portuguese, but European Portuguese is difficult to discern. It sounds like Russian.

1st generation American here. My dad was from Glasgow, Scotland and my mom was from Toronto, Canada. I grew up in a small town outside Cleveland, Ohio and currently live in a small town in southern West Virginia. I've heard my fair share of accents! 😂😂

I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains. I'm 60% Scottish, Morrison and Spurlock are the two sides of my family tree. Much of the Appalachian Mountains were settled by Scottish, Scotch Irish, and Irish.
Fellow Appalachian here, Some Spurlocks in my wood pile too.
Also an Appalachian I’m 48% German on my dads side , we settled in the United States in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania in 1840 , then some of my ancestors moved to Kyser , WV. My mothers family , unfortunately I need to dig through the history more , I’m 34% Scottish. My ancestors settled in Alpena , Michigan near Lake Huron.
Another Appalachian, from the Blue Ridge Mountains. My mother's family has been up there since the 1700's. Beautiful country.

You'd be asked where you're from lol. The assumption would be European, which covers a lot of languages and accents. Most Americans never leave America so are only really exposed to Mexican Spanish. They'd know it wasn't Mexican accent lol.
Without the Scottish immigrants we would've never won the revolutionary war against England. They left their fields and families to fight every single time they were called to fight.

Appalachian area Scotch-Irish here. My husband is as well. We both look similar in facial features. Many of us grew up with grandparents or great grandparents that immigrated. Most families came over 1840s-1900. So we have stories and lots of people keep things alive in their own way. Moonshine, too!
To put the distance in perspective, my grandparents would live roughly in Malmö, Sweden and my current house would be in Rome, Italy. That’s like driving from Lisbon to Brussels, just to visit family.

My great-great-grandmother came to the US from Scotland in the mid 1800s! She settled in the southern part of New Jersey, which is where her decendents stayed until my grandfather joined the army during WW2. He decided to make a career out of the military, which brought him all over the US and the world. He met and married a girl in Texas, who would be my grandmother.
12:33 Yes, Redwoods are in California. You can find a few groves in Oregon before they give way to other species like Douglas Fir. That clip I am pretty sure is Muir Woods, a small park of Redwoods just across the bay in Marin by taking the Golden Gate Bridge.
Baseball is "America's Pastime" (capitalization on purpose for emphasis). Even though football is more popular in the South, it doesn't mean that baseball isn't. This is America and baseball is in our blood. I love my Astros and I go to as many games as possible during the regular season. Post-season is too much for me, but I still watch every game on TV. We LOVE baseball everywhere in the US.
If the South had more than like 1 team other than Texas they would probably be way more into it 😂 im in Tennessee and my team is somehow Cincinnati and also Atlanta so they make it incredibly difficult to even watch if you dont have Bally sports.

When I was young, my cousins moved to Kansas City away from most of us in New Jersey. We had to explain to all our relatives overseas that it was over 3 hours away.
They thought, wow, that’s a long drive! We had to explain that it was a flight. They had no concept of how large this country is.
My family has immigrated to America from England , Scotland, Wales and Ireland starting in the early 1600’s. In fact, I had an ancestor on the Mayflower, the ship loaded with English pilgrims who came here to escape religious persecution. Then again, in the 1800’s more ancestors came for religious reasons and were pioneers who crossed the plains to settle in Salt Lake City. That was 6 generations ago for me. A DNA test shows that my family is about 98% from the British Isles.
Dude, please remember this sandwich for your kid when they get older. Here in the US it is always seen as quick, cost effective, snack for kids to tide them over to the meal. The glass off milk helps cleanse the pallet of the richness and sweetness, plus provides more sustenance other than pure sugar.

My mother's maiden name is about as Scottish as you can get - McQuilkin.

The best way to experience America is select a region. Choose a 7 day adventure(minus traveling time to get here) and SELECT A REGION. We are basically split up between 4-5 different 'areas' so to speak. Trying to experience all of America is just impossible unless you can spend a month+. I live by chicago and still learn something new every time I go there for example. The north east corridor, the panhandle, the deep south, all of these areas are so unique and different but each has something amazing about it. First decide what you really want to do. And focus your time on that area. It is like traveling from Portugal to kyiv if you try to experience it all I guess as a comparison.

My mother's maiden name was Maxwell, which is Scots clan whose traditional area was along the border between England and Scotland. My ancestor came from Scotland to New England as an indentured servant after the Battle of Culloden where Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated. He indentured himself for the cost of his passage from Scotland because he had no money after the war, so that's how he paid for his passage. He worked the years of his indenture, then kept working for his former master for wages and saved up enough money to pay for one of his relatives to come over and join him. They both worked, saved their money, and sent back for more of their family. As more came over they did the same thing until all the relatives who wanted to leave Scotland had made it to New England. Some of their descendents left and settled in Kentucky and in Illinois. My mother was born in Illinois in an area where there were a lot of Scots. There is a town about two miles (if that far, maybe less) from the town where Grandma and Grandpa lived named "Dunfermline" after a town in Scotland.

Aberdeen, Washington is actually the small town where Kurt Cobain (specifically) and Nirvana originally came from, before quickly moving to Seattle to become part of the late 80’s-early 90’s “grunge” music scene.

I like some of the accents from Scotland and also Ireland quite a bit. I live in Alabama and have heard accents from people who moved to Alabama or were visiting from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Italy, India, Columbia, China, Germany and Poland (four Holocaust survivors).
When I was in my twenties, I worked in a hospital at the information desk and in the gift shop, so the huge majority of those people were hospital employees, office workers, medical staff, volunteers, and such. I loved talking to them and discussing cultures. A lot of them didn't know much or anything about black Americans and our various cultures and how they connected and blended with others. I loved giving my bit of knowledge from my experience as a young black woman.
The four elderly Holocaust survivors were so sweet. They were two married couples who met in a concentration camp, made a vow to survive, did, married and the four were always together. The two men showed me their tattooed numbers on their arms and asked if I knew what they were, and I did.
They were open to discussing some of what they endured, but told me there were things they wouldn't tell me because it would be too much for me to handle. I'm just listening, but they lived it. 😢
Their wives always wore long sleeves because they didn't want people asking questions about the tattoos as it was a hard for them to talk about those times. Understandable.
I liked hearing all four of their accents. Such sweet people who always took time to talk to me as they said I was "an old soul" and it was rare to find someone so young who were interested in their lives. 😢
Both baseball and football are very popular throughout the US. Football is generally more popular nationwide. Both the midwest and the south have prestigious professional and college football teams.
Ohio and Michigan are both Midwest states.
My family in my mothers side is from Scotland ! I’m descendant of the Galbraith Clan of Scotland. We lost our nobility at one point in our family history . A hotel company in LA owns my families castle and they were using it as a wedding hotel up until the COVID outbreak . Our Gaelic spelling is Mac a’ Bhreatnnaich “ son of Britain “ , however Galbraith means English Foreigner

A “ball park figure” means : give me an estimate of the [cost, distance, length of time] of something. If my car needs some maintenance work, I would ask for an estimate. I don’t want something specific, but an educated guess of the cost-a ball park figure. When I take my 80th birthday road trip from Brownsville, Texas to Durango, Colorado, I will drive somewhere in the ball park of 400 miles each day.
I do think that some people would assume you are Russian, but you do still have unique ways of speaking that obviously don’t feel that way. People would like your voice :)

Visiting some of the east coast, like Boston Massachusetts, gives a feel of the different ethnic backgrounds of the different immigrants. Boston has “areas” of the city where Italian businesses and residents are more prevalent, then an Irish area, etc. Detroit Michigan also still has some of these ethnic areas of the city. It is awesome to see all the different cultures in one city. To me, this is an example what the US is or should be, lots of different people from all over the world living together and making a good life.
Just remember that some very beautiful places are best viewed in a picture. For example in the southwest U.S. it can be 115 degrees F in the shade; that is 46 degrees Celsius. In Alaska it is possible to see gorgeous snow and ice landscapes, but can get to -50 to -60 C. These are the extremes, but if you are going to travel don't forget to be ready for the differences in weather.
BTW, the state of Illinois is pronounce Illinoi - the s is silent.
Check a map for the SIZE of the Great Lakes (Lakes Michigan, Erie, Huron, Superior, etc.). Several states & Canada have shorelines on a great lake. I am a California native & I've seen Lake Michigan -- visiting Chicago, & many visits to Lake Erie (visiting Ohio).

Seattle is famous for the "Seattle Freeze". People tend to keep to themselves, but are very friendly if you engage them. Once you get to know them, they are friends for life.
Yes, if you see giant redwoods, or Sequoias (seh--koy-ah), you're almost certainly in California. But also true about Joshua trees, which are strange desert plants that look as if palm trees were crossed with cactus. I love Sequoias and Joshua trees.

Your Portuguese accent is so strong it sound like your speaking it when your speaking English. I love it. My mother is Portuguese, has been in the US for over 40 years and still has a strong accent. People ask her all the time what it is and NEVER guess. Portuguese people in the US are concentrated in the north east,Newark,New Jersey has a whole area with Portuguese shops, bakeries, restaurants.
You would be asked where you were from probably...but it would be generally out of curiosity. We in the States meet so many people within our lives with different accents....just in our own country alone let alone with all the visitors we get! As for the sports here....Fans here in general love their sports teams....it doesn't matter if you're from the North, South, East or West any sport is popular!

So the accent thing is a real phenomenon. When you're surrounded by a different accent you unintentionally tone it down but when you're around a similar accent it builds up. I used to work with a bunch of Jamaican men. When they got together during lunch their accent became so pronounced that I couldn't keep up.
I love the Scottish accent. When I worked in England my office mate was Scottish. It took me two weeks to understand a word he said to me. He and his wife had me to their house over the weekend. After that, I had no more trouble
Going back to what they say about place names, I live 15 miles from a town named Lisbon and about 10 miles from a town named Madrid pronounced Mad-rid

Yes I have heritage from multiple European countries but when it comes to Scottish I have a lot from my Father’s Mother’s line as her family were direct descendants of a Clan called Taylor that came to the U.S. about 3-4 generations before she was born. So from her line alone it is primarily Scott’s with some influence from Scandinavian Vikings and the French that end up in Scotland at some point before my direct ancestors left Scotland
Yes 100% we would ask you to just talk so we can listen. It’s like music to our ears I feel like. The first time I heard you speak I thought it was a Russian accent. I work in a restaurant and one of our regular customers is German and I love to hear her.

19:45 Many people, including a LOT of Midwesterners surrounding Illinois, will say "El A Noise" when it should be "El A Noy". I can remember back in the 1970s to the 1990s there was a state slogan to promote the state that I heard in TV ads that said "There's no Noise in Illinois". This referred to both the rural calmness of most of the state along with a reference to the common mispronunciation of the state's name. (I originally from the bordering state of Indiana.)

I went to Scotland in July 2022 with my dad and brothers for a golf trip and we all loved it. While there we visited some areas of Scotland where our ancestors are from. I would love to go back.

If you are driving around the US, when you go from one state to another via highway, stop by the visitor center. You can get physical maps of the state and get tourist info; like museums, local restaurants, etc. Many of them also have exhibits related to the state.

It's more than Chicago, hence the name 'Lake Michigan', but it's not surprising he thought it was Michigan since the name is Lake Michigan.
Chicago is amazing. If you do come visit us here I HIGHLY recommend taking an architecture tour on the river. You learn so much about the history of Chicago and you have a pleasant afternoon river cruise! They were in Lincoln Park right near the zoo and that’s also right by the Chicago History Museum which is another great place to go. And it’s right by Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders where you can experience Chicago’s third type of pizza after tavern style and deep dish!
One thing that might be confusing if you’re walking around in the parks is that there is a statue of Grant in Lincoln Park and a statue of Lincoln in Grant Park.
My mother was born in Scotland. Her family emigrated to upstate New York in the 1920's. And my dad was from an old New England family but his mother was Scottish.
Tangential: St. Louis, Missouri also has a free zoo, connected to the largest city park, and you can board a train from Chicago to St. Louis. It takes 4-5 hours. I'd suggest visiting there only in the spring & autumn, however.

There's no reason you can't do BBQ in Portugal. Go online and try to find a BBQ seasoning rub where you can see the label that shows the ingredients. Usually it's fairly common things like paprika, brown sugar, salt, garlic powder and maybe some powdered dried chile peppers. Also I'm sure there are videos using home-made, not commercial rubs. You also have one advantage because quite a few recipes call for "liquid smoke" with I think is nasty stuff and if you are making your own rub you can substitute Spanish smoked paprika instead of sweet for a smoked flavor if you aren't actually smoking the meat for many hours.
