It needs to be pointed out that all four members of 10CC had amazing voices, incredible musicianship, were intelligent composers, and had innovative engineering skills. I would argue that they are the most underrated band of all time.
Absolutely ... and on top of that they were brilliant 'live' musicians. A lot of their stuff was so slick, well produced and full of textures, harmonies that it would not have been a surprise if the live versions sounded inferior to the studio stuff. But they were absolute;ly tight as a live band. I saw a comment a few weeks ago that said they were great - perhaps not quite in the league of 'Queen but still great. But at the time they were definitely rated alongside Queen and at times even higher. They've become underrated over the last 20 years - among the heaving masses anyway. You're right about the qualities of all 4 guys. I think it was Graham during an interview a while back that said they were one of the few, if not the only, band where every member could write/compose, play, sing and engineer/produce album quality tracks completely on their own without assistance if required
+Composer28 Indeed... And yet their first hit was "I'm A Neanderthal Man", a piece of bubble-gum banality that makes "Frere Jacques" sound like a work of art.
NoneOfYour Beeswax But the band that recorded Neanderthal Man was without Graham Gouldman. It needed all four of them to make it work. In any case Neanderthal Man was a song that arose out of one of Kevin Godley's lengthy drumming sessions, used for Eric Stewart to test the capabilities of their new recording studio. Lol creme started playing to accompany Kevin Godley. Jonathan King heard this jam session and said that it was a hit. So they tinkered with it and released it. You could call it an accidental hit.
Dumfries Spearhead Saw them live a fortnight ago , only Gouldman left now but still a great gig . They played the whole of 'Sheet music' 1st half then the hits 2nd half .
It was mind-blowing when it came out in 1975 and reached number 1 in the UK charts. Now, 45 years later, it isn't 'dated' at all. Now we understand its complexities, and what the lads went through to produce it, it is really one of the greatest pieces of popular music ever produced. A big shout out too for 10CC's I'm Mandy, Fly Me. Another piece of musical genius from 1976.
My gosh! I've always loved "I'm Not In Love" (and 70s music). Now, knowing the painstaking process they went though to get there makes me love it more. Wow! 10cc, you are geniuses!
From David A.Wood: Hello again, fellow RUclipsrs! David from Kettering, Ohio is back here. I first happily heard "I'm Not In Love," or at least bits of it, on a local AM radio station in Dayton, Ohio, WING, when I was a teenager, probably while I was in the middle of High School during the late 1970s. The intriguingly subtle "I'm Not In Love" was one of the first non-R&B songs to which I earnestly paid rapt attention. Later on, when I first fully heard the song as a High School Senior while watching the rather chessy, yet compelling 1979 film, "The Stud" on Cable TV during one very late night in April 1982, I found "I'm Not In Love" to be a seductively captivating and also an emotionally compelling song. With that favorable opinion still to this day firmly planted in my mind, it is no wonder that the restrainedly elegant "I'm Not In Love" is 10cc's signature song. 10cc's signature song was, and still is, one of my favorite Love Songs. Having proudly stated how "I'm Not In Love" made me sentimentally feel, I will be perfectly frank by further saying that 10cc's seductively captivating song still instinctively makes me emotionally swoon in a fantasist's fashion everytime I fortunately hear it! Finally, I enjoyed the documentary on 10cc's signature song and their career. Please do keep up the good work. Goodbye for now and have yourselves a really nice day (Sunday, January 21, 2024), everybody. Peace Out! ☮️
This song stands alone at the top of popular music. There is absolutely NOTHING like it. Beyond creative and innovative. This band brought 4 equally talented but unique individuals together to make some of the most enjoyable and exciting music ever!
My girlfriend who I loved broke up with me several months later after this song came out it, still reminds me of her to this day & now I’m 70.. still a bitter sweet song for me .. but I suspected it was a complex record, now I realise how complex. 10cc music geniuses.
What a great coincidence mine also left me the year after this wonderful and impressive musical work, she left in September 1976 and to date I get a lump in my throat, it seems like it was yesterday, I was 19 years old and today I am 66 May you rest in peace, now that almost 50 years have passed
I heard this story a while after the song was released.. The magic, is really the build up of the tape hiss. This was a mind boggling song for it's time.. still is...
Ha, good point. All that bouncing of vocal tracks would certainly have built up a good deal of hiss back in the days of tape recording. In this case it became an integral part of the magic of this song.
the same notion that they cannot build pyramids today, they can't produce songs like this either - one of the best recordings of all time like Good Vibrations or Bohemian Rhapsody, I'm Not In Love is timeless. 10cc, an incredible collective talent...
Then your definitely not as "Pro" as you perceived. Haha Seriously "I'm not in love" is actually required learning for aspiring Engineer's everywhere for the past 40 years. 👍
Being born in 1970, this must be my first music memory. It feels like it anyway. That tune has always been a part of my life. I'm very much in love with I'm not in love!
Why? Hardly any of it is electronic music. I used to think that the lush sound of this track was created with synthesizers. I'm amazed to learn that it is all vocal tracks and the only keyboard to be found are a piano, a Fender Rhodes and the Moog synth kick drum sound.
Heath Weber because it shows how using different techniques can get amazing techniques. Not to mention in most music production courses, you do studio recording techniques too, which this would be useful for
I was a small kid in '75, living in England where my father was stationed in the Air Force. My parents were really into music and even had a pioneer Quadraphonic stereo system. I spent many hours listening to tape recorded music and albums. Would often get current "Top of the Pops" LP albums, and this became a favorite song of mine.... It brings back a flood of memories every time I hear it.
Haha. Heard it first when I was 5 in '75! I was at an indoor ice rink in the lobby of hotel and it was playing there. I remember being mesmerized by it even then. Still love it! How could you not?
I remember it coming out as a lovelorn teenager at the end of my first year at University. Not many songs come out perfect, but this did. I knew 10CC but hadn't taken them that seriously until The Original Soundtrack Album which I still adore.....48 years later. I love playing "flying junk" on my piano and singing along to this day.
And this is Kathy, the studio secretary.” What’s Kathy’s last name, she should be famous for her contribution, not just “Kathy, the secretary.” I do adore this song and it’s wonderful to hear the details of its creation. There’s NOTHING else like it; perfect song! Cheers, Kathy! Well done! 👍🏻
Thanks for posting. Their recordings still sound fresh today, a sure sign of musical greatness. All four of the original line up are musical powerhouses in their own right. But this song is where Eric's engineering expertise and musical talent really shine, (he is a phenomenal guitar player; seen him play live many times). They had their reasons for splitting but I wonder what they could have done had they not. To have the imagination and skills to write and record this is genius indeed.
In 75 this song came out and blow every one away...they were genuinely geniuses who glazed the trail for band's like Vangelis and countless more!!!.♥️🇬🇧
Sampling before there was sampling - Geniuses! I always wondered how they could have sampled their voices before the Fairlight CMI. Thanks for posting!
Billy Joel Producer - Phil Ramone admitted that the breakthrough hit - JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - was a direct copy of the technique from 10cc - all the chords copied by Phil Ramone - so Billy can thank 10cc for the backing choir on his hit.
This was so awesome! I'm so glad the Guardian of the Galaxy brought this tune back to my consciousness because this record was and still is (in my book) one of the best songs of that era and today...nothing can compare...kudos to Lol Creme for the absolutely best suggestions ever!
This song is absolute pure magic. I grew up with this song. I don't think anyone has come remotely close to matching the imagination that went into recording this. People who go to music recording school should be forced to listen to this video.
I agree that a lot of imagination went into the recording process, but disagree that no-one has come close to matching the imagination that went into it. You should look up how The Beatles recorded a lot of their music, including Sgt Pepper. That was truly imaginative.
Extremely underrated.Too bad we couldnt get more out of them. But trust me,I am very happy what is out there for our appreciation. The song "Im not in love is a complete Gem of musical engineering.I remember listenning to it as a kid in the 70s and loving it.To this day,the song blows my mind and i cant get enough of it.
Analog masterworks of sonic excellence. When I was a kid this song always sounded like the way music is in dream. It was ethereal , now I know why. Not to compare the two , but the strings in the background of bjorks come to me , reminds me of those ethereal songs from the past. It's those subtle otherworldly effects that you just cant place , that moves my spirit the most. 10cc then , 16 horsepower now , I can see the genius in both.
"Big Boys Don't Cry"...I'm so astounded by this I'm actually reduced to tears. These men obviously cared a lot about what they were doing and trying to accomplish to put that much time and effort into this recording. Groundbreaking. No other record sounded like it at the time. Always captivated me as a kid. Got angry when on "American Top 40" it got stuck at #2 for 3 weeks behind Van McCoy's "The Hustle", The Eagles' "One Of These Nights" and The Bee Gees' "Jive Talkin'"- 3 DIFFERENT SONGS!!!
Even more than 40 years after, i still have goosebumps listening this song, i was so young. I still remember the cover of LP, a cowboy seated on his horse, shooted by the camera. I coulnd't imagine at this time how many voices used as background vocals.
This is one of the best things RUclips has ever had. Just a genius video about an amazing song, and I can't think of anything better I've ever seen on YT.
What's interesting is that the "chorusing" of the 16 voices per note today would ordinarily be done with a "chorus" or "harmonizer" effect of some kind. But they recorded each voice individually, which is why each note sounds so organic. Even today, there's actually still no easy way to create the same kind of sound without actually recording each note over and over. Duplicate voices sound like...well...duplicates. In this case, it is quite literally a wall of vocal nuances that digital effects could never reproduce effectively.
Yes, but today, pop stars today don´t just harmonizer to have multiple layers and harmony´s on the vocals. Even today, each note is recorded. If you check out for example Katy Perry´s sessions, there you can see that there are a lot of tracks used for the vocals, that applies probably with Beyonce and many other pop artist´s.
Ever since I've had some semblance of knowledge about recording and music making technology (which is going on at least 15 years now). This song has always driven me NUTS whenever it was played on the radio because the same thought ran through my head over and over ,and that thought is this: "Wait a minute!...this was recorded in 1975....that pre-dates any 'sampling' technology!..HOW THE HELL did they do this?!!?" Well, with this vid I finally know. Thank you so much for uploading it!!
I absolutely love this song. It is one of my deepest favorites. When I was young and the radio was on if this came on I would run from wherever I was at to hear it and turn it up to be surrounded by it.
It's funny, but when I was growing up, as a kid, having heard this like in 7th grade, etc, I always thought this song was "considered" by my "cooler" older brothers and [supposed] progressive and classic rock aficionados a sappy, trite song, but I always secretly liked it. It's always been one of those songs that is just DRIPPING with nostalgic atmosphere and soul. I never knew about this elaborate production and how innovative these guys were! I've already watched this mini documentary 4 times in the past month and a half! It's REALLY augmented my appreciation of this great song.
This is one of the BEST music album docos out there on RUclips. A must watch for any music lover or curious cat!! It dives into the complex and delicate techniques and methods used in producing a song back the golden adays of musical talent.... Sadly long long gone these days.
I'm a black musician from way back - "I remember listening to this song when they were saturating the radio with it - "All I know is that I loved this song a lot - "The words & the presentation and the music - "If you loved someone - "This is the way you would tell them & try to stay cool" - "Great Great Song" - "Big Props" 10cc
Used to play this song live with my band TNT in Harrisburg PA circa '75-76. Our drummer sang it live (coming out from behind his drumkit) and we used a pre-recorded kick drum track and played it back on a small cassette player. I loved watching the video about how 10CC made it at Strawberry Studios. A truly astonishing production from the guys who also brought you the oddball classic Neanderthal Man.
Great documentary, great song, great band. An interesting and fascinating insight into how an all time classic came to be. Today's rubbish input doesn't even come close and never will.
Pre digital, perfect, no one can produce music like this.. It's absolutely brilliant, amazing, perfect, astounding, epic.... Anyone like to add any words, I kind of wish they released it with the part with words they took out "don't feel let down don't give hung up we do what we can we do what we muuuuuuuust... only because it sounds good now.. Brilliant...
I've loved this song and 10CC's and Godley and Creme's other work too. But now seeing how it was made I'm even more amazed and impressed by it. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary!
I am 56 yrs old I get goosebumps listening to this legendary 70s mind blowing soft rock smooth groove classic by 10cc I am not in love to me I love Queen bohemian Rhapsody Even in 2023 blows my mind. away Mesmerising never go's away

I agree, I'm Mandy Fly Me is the second best ever song of theirs. It is an epic, with the two guitar solos and the anticlimatic ending
The best ballad ever recorded, period.
@Katie Rae You are truly a knob of the highest order.
My gosh! I've always loved "I'm Not In Love" (and 70s music). Now, knowing the painstaking process they went though to get there makes me love it more. Wow!
10cc, you are geniuses!
This is the most beautiful song from 20 century.. No doubts
My chosen song for my funeral. Currently married for 40 years, this song and my wife are inseparable and I love them both so much. ❤️❤️❤️
Muito legal, cara. Espero que demore muito. Saudações do Brasil para o casal.🇧🇷👍🏽

A timeless classic! I agree with everyone, very underrated. Amazing musicians!
Hardly underrated as it's required learning as part of the curriculum for all those studying to become professional recording engineers. 😊
sublime masterpiece it's not a song it's work of art by masters of their craft..........
Still unmatched masterpiece.
I heard this story a while after the song was released.. The magic, is really the build up of the tape hiss. This was a mind boggling song for it's time.. still is...

One the best balads of all time. Absolutely adored this sonce i was 11. I still have this single in impeccable condition.
7:55 oooh my god!!!
I need a full version with that alternative vocals

This song is so magical.. I've loved it since it came out. What a great surprise to find this documentary!!
Who's the main speaker in this video?
Very cute presentation, the "lecture" itself, the signpost with 256 and other nice stuff... and I'm still watching it, who knows what's next ;))
Wow, this is fantastic! I've been a professional musician and an audio engineer for 20+ years and had no idea this track was recorded this way.
Ditto.
'Cept, professional Musician for a time, Amateur audio engineer since 1984.

@@briandaly7236 We don't know until we know. And now I know and am thankful for that knowledge no matter how late in the game I acquired it.
This was a phenomenal X Jen loves you you guys are amazing thank you for the music
Being born in 1970, this must be my first music memory. It feels like it anyway. That tune has always been a part of my life. I'm very much in love with I'm not in love!
This should be required listening in all electronic music production classes.

Heath Weber because it shows how using different techniques can get amazing techniques. Not to mention in most music production courses, you do studio recording techniques too, which this would be useful for
These Gents were Monster performers in every musical sense. I now realize how lucky I was to have lived my teen years in the 70's.
I love hearing the story behind the song.
David Mcque Me Too
10cc was Brilliant and way ahead of their time. Thanks again for this documentary on RUclips.
these guys were absolute geniuses.
i just can't believe how old this song is.........incredible production !
The Greatest Love song of all time.......
+CBDM777 I agree, cant be done today, isn't it strange.
absolutely... 1st heard as a 4 year old kid in 75.. I still play at least 3-4 times a month today in 2016...
Haha. Heard it first when I was 5 in '75! I was at an indoor ice rink in the lobby of hotel and it was playing there. I remember being mesmerized by it even then. Still love it! How could you not?
It is not, and was never intended to be a love song. Hence the title of it.
Artists talking shop is sacred to me. Thanks for putting this up, really.
This song STILL stands up in 2022 IT IS groundbreaking and PERFECT!!
I remember it coming out as a lovelorn teenager at the end of my first year at University. Not many songs come out perfect, but this did. Kathy Redfern!
All you damn kids need to dive deeper into Godley and Creme, especially their tracks like "Cry".

LOVED 10cc. Listened to them NON STOP in the 70's.
Yes, we did enter a hallowed space indeed. Just superb.
I was 21 in 1975..they were way ahead with there music. (Like the beatles were) 10cc never made a bad record EVER!!! Loved there music 🎶
The brilliant mixes made it - timeless brilliant. Romantic mood all over....
PS just watched the rest of this - loved hearing those "missing" vocals! thx very much for posting this, great little gem here

The most unique and memorable song I can remember.Absolutely unforgettable and mesmerizing sound.

Absolutely original
Eric, of the Mindbenders!!!!! "A Groovy Kind of Love" 1966, LIVE!!!!!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this video, as i absolutely loved this song back when i first heard it.
COOOOLLLL STUFF! THANX FOR POSTING THIS!
Actually I take that back, today they would probably use a harmoniser, since we are talking about 256 voices.
Sound Author everything you said is spot on sir
Sound Author and I love you for that
It just doesn’t sound the same at all
What creative genius!!!

Fascinating! I was wondering how they created the various sounds for this song. What a process!
I absolutely love this song. It is one of my deepest favorites. When I was young and the radio was on if this came on I would run from wherever I was at to hear it and turn it up to be surrounded by it.
I bought this record when it came out in 1975. It's a beautiful song and a production masterpiece.
An amazing group so clever and talented my favourite group ever.
So interesting and so beautifully done. Thanks.
A phenomenal recording. Absolutely fabulous.
Quarantine had me here....love it!!
I'd bet money that your "cooler" older brothers secretly liked it too. 😉
i love 10cc.this came from the album 10cc the original soundtrack an awesome album.
It's definitely one of the most fascinating songs I've ever heard.
Thanks so much for sharing this, just simply amazing.
Love this song, love hearing how it was made! Awesome!!!
This is absolutely incredible to watch and to listen to. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Seriously...love this song.
Talk about pushing the limits of early multitrack tape technology. Great piece - thanks for posting.
Great documentary, great song, great band. An interesting and fascinating insight into how an all time classic came to be. Today's rubbish input doesn't even come close and never will.
timeless classic, never tire of hearing it !! bring back 1975
This always has been and always will be my all time favorite song. It's perfect.
Wow. I have always wondered how they created that song without samplers. Awesome upload.
So very beautiful...and a part of my youth . Thank God for the gift of music
I've loved this song and 10CC's and Godley and Creme's other work too. But now seeing how it was made I'm even more amazed and impressed by it. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary!
I really like that vocal section in the middle. It feels like I've heard it before.
