    20:40 What a talented boy you have, I love the texture detailing he did for Jeffrey and Veronica's shirt - it's a really good use of changing pressure to create bolder or subtler colors - it shows he thinks like an artist! It's such a small touch, but I can tell you're proud of him, and it's so heartwarming to see! If you get the chance, let him know a random person who saw his drawings loved his artwork and hopes to see some again in a future video!

    Love the new format. Over here, and I guess we're not alone, sometimes alternative shops will have a decent shipping cost, while aliexpress will ask more for shipping than the product itself. So, for international buyers, that can be an additional bonus. Big hello to Chicken!

    I just got a Powkiddy V90 and I absolutely love it. It’s a great device to start your retro handheld collection. I had a little trouble installing the custom firmware but I got it to work. I paid $46 through Amazon for faster shipping but it was worth every penny. Been playing tons of Pokémon on it, makes me feel like a kid again. This is the device I will probably take with me everywhere. Because I’m so impressed by emulation I’m definitely going to be ordering a Retroid Pocket 2+ next. I want that seamless experience with PS1, N64 and Dreamcast Games. However the Powkiddy will hold me over for sometime. As much as I wished it played PS1 games better, for the price I’m certainly not disappointed. I don’t mind that it only plays up to superNES. I maayyyy look into the RG280V eventually but that would just be an impulse buy if anything.

    My pocketable device is my Funkey S. Perfect for urban travel. My RG350, with Adam Image, is on my nightstand. My RP2 is by my armchair as is my GPD Win2. My RP2+ is on order along with the Valve SteamDeck. My Shield Pro is rocking emulation like nobody's business on my 60 inch. For me, I compulsively need a gadget within arm's reach pretty much since 1976 when I bought my first calculator for High School and a Coleco handheld LED racing game for recess. I got myself a Pocketgo S30 for $60 (not launch price). I love its form factor and the fact that it's got a vintage 'retro' look. It had its issues on launch but Russ' Simple30 firmware made it a lot more playable. Nowadays there's still some modding going on, and several other issues w.r.t compatibility are still being looked into or fixed, but I've been quite happy with my purchase.

      @kaleiya. 2 года назад

      i was thinking about getting that, i either want to get a powkiddy v90, miyoo mini v2, or pocket go s30. Which do u think would be better for my 1st handheld?

    • @arvindhmani06
      @arvindhmani06 2 года назад

      @@kaleiya. I'd say the Miyoo Mini or the V90 are a good choice if you're looking for a low-budget device being actively tinkered with by the community, although I'd say the Miyoo Mini performs better than the V90 overall. The S30 has a good form factor and I don't find it uncomfortable like some say, but unfortunately the S30 isn't as powerful (which I don't mind because I'm focused on GBA & below for the most part). In fact I don't think it's even available these days.
      But I'd also consider the RK3326 devices because a lot of cool stuff has been going on in the community on those devices. They're a bit pricier so it'll depend on your budget but I'll echo Russ's words and say the Powkiddy RGB10 Max is the all-round winner. In fact until the Odin came along, I don't think he's found another device to compete for top spot. Personally I haven't used it so I can't comment, but the RGB10 Max looks like a beast.

    I'm so hooked at the moment on these little fun machines. I've got 3 PSP's, 2 OLED Vita's, 1 Vita Slim, GPD XD (metallic red), PocketGo, OnexPlayer and I'm currently waiting for the V90 to come in the mail. That Pocket 2 plus looks super tempting as well, but I think the first step to managing this addiction, is admitting I have a problem. That said, if they come out with a metallic white shell V90 with blue RGB on the back (like Alienware style) that's a insta purchase. I'm surprised not to see the 351p in this video given your coverage of it.

    • @Cyko..
      @Cyko.. 2 года назад +1

      I'm addicted to these devices as well and have a pretty decent collection. I too own the OneXPlayer. It's probably my favorite portable handheld of all time. It's a big boy, but feels great in the hands. PS2 and PS3 games run exceptionally well on it. And on the opposite spectrum, I also own the FunKey S, which is kind of humorous to play with after playing on the OneXPlayer a few hours. The FunKey S feels like a toy, but it's quite powerful for being so tiny. It handles PS1, Quake, and Doom just fine, along with all your other 16-bit and under games.

    I love the mention of the Retroid 2+, I think it is definitely a massive competitor in the sub $100 genre. I already preordered mine, and like Russ, i dont like to hype things up, but im pretty hyped. As far as budget goes, I say the Odroid-GO Advance is a killer deal. The only problem being you have to build the device, which is why I'd guess you left it out, which is fair enough. There is also the Odroid-GO Super, which can be found for sub-$100. It's not build it yourself, but you will have to find your own firmware, which there are plenty, but might not be an idea "gift" due to that. I can see why you glossed over these two, but I feel they should be considered by anyone looking to purchase something for themselves.

    This is a great video. I feel like none of the devices on the market are perfect though. Either they don't do the clamshell design, they aren't powerful enough, or the touch screen doesn't work. The GPD XD+ was my go to for a long time. In the end I ended up buying a nice android phone with a telescopic controller, which works the best. However suffers from not being very portable, you need to bring it in a bag with you. The Dingoo I bought back in like 2011 or so ended up being the best portable I had way past some of the devices in the mid 2010s. I would still use it if It hadn't broke from being dropped.

    At the $70+ pricepoint I'd start looking at PSPs. That's going to get you a great condition used PSP2000 or 3000 unit from a reliable Japanese eBay seller, and you'll be able to play the "SNES and below" category pretty well. The main advantage is PSP and PS1 games (plus movie and media UMDs) play natively. The main drawbacks are that the screen is older 480x272, batteries are getting to be an issue, and you'll be getting a used system.

    It's crazy how much thid had changed. The miyoo mini is cheaper than most rk3326 devices and very comparable in quality, and the rp2+ just destroys them in price v performance. I feel like the only rk3326 device still worth buying over the competition is the powkiddy rgb10 max 2 for it's large screen and stacked shoulder buttons.

    The Family Pocket FC3000 is my favorite super budget handheld. It was $25(with shipping!) and love the way it looks, PocketGo is a good option too but be gentle with it its not the most well built device.
    Definitely check ebay though, my 351P was $70 and i use it more than any other handheld.

    Hey Russ, I saw your kids have a New Nintendo 2DS in one of your previous videos and I was wondering, since we're in a bit of a lull with new handheld launches, would you be interested in asking them to borrow it and do some vids on it as a retro console? Kind of what you did for PSVita, forgetting about pirating their native games and focusing on the Retro aspect of it. I think just with TWM++, the Virtual Console Injectors, RetroArch and PC ports you'd have quite a bit of interesting material for it...

    Just bought my first New 2DS XL for 150 bucks but it can play all of these plus 3ds games, except n64. Think the community just gave up on that. Gonna save my money for the Steam Deck and that should cover all my retro and modern games' need...on the go!!

    Got an RGB10 Max a few months ago and now I never get to play it because my wife has decided it's hers. Definitely looking forward to the RP2+ now.

    I thought the retroid 2 was high on your previous videos. I just found one for $60. I hope I made the right choice. It's coming in next week.

    Not sure it's helpful because you're enabling me... I own the RG300, I've got the playgo on the way but I was (and still am) torn about the 280v. I'm looking for the best "play in the car while waiting for a kid's sportsball practice to end" device. I love the idea of the 3.5" screen on the playgo but the pocketability of the 280v. I'm a bigger dude so not sure how the 280v would feel for up to an hour at times. The GKD mini would probably be the perfect middle ground if there weren't insanely overpriced. I'm definitely starting a collection of these though. Thanks for your great reviews and tutorials!

    Love your videos. Great demonstration. Great speed and references. Im seeing a Abernic 552 coming out. Do you know anything about it? Do you know if the Retro 2+ has a wifi port?

      The RP2+ will have built in Wi-Fi, yes. I don’t know much about the RG552, but I think it’ll release before 2021 is over.

    I actually preordered a 2+ to replace my older odroid system.
    Looking forward to it's solid n64 performance, since it has two sticks they should actually be playable
    The UI is much easier and adding games is easier too it looks like.

    I ended up buying the rg280v after your video and I'm really happy with it. I've been playing Chrono trigger which was on my list of must play games :)
    Thanks for the recommendation, the Adam image is awesome and the form factor and quality is just what I wanted.
    I used to have an odroid go advance, but the boot time (batocera image), barrel charger and overall build quality was a major drawback

    Hi Russ, wonder what's your favourite mini/budget controller? For me it's the ipega sw021 and 8bitdo zero 2. Thanks and keep up the good works!

      Hi, I don't own any mini controllers, but I use the Betop wired controller for a lot of my testing, it's $30 on AliExpress and works well for both retro and modern gaming (no analog triggers, though). For wireless I like the BigBig Won Elitist S.

    Personally the rg280m for 70-80$ with a metal shell and power on par with most Veronica tier and up handhelds, its my choice.
