    This was wonderful! I so badly want to be able to paint like this, but I'm still learning to swatch. Practice, practice. I'm off to watch any other Color Spotlights I can find. Thank you so much for this series!

    This proves that artists don't need to obsessively purchase huge amounts of colours. Look at all the colours you can create by mixing! 👌👌👌

    YES! I am in love with this idea for a series! (Color nerds unite!). I enjoy how all of your little color test swatches look kind of like adorable ghosts, and I am picturing them with all kinds of quirky faces.

    I think this might be my favorite painting series on RUclips! I'm going to have to see if I have an Ultramarine and pthalo green hanging around somewhere (or have an excuse to visit the art store) because that color combo is gorgeous! Looking forward to next week!

    This is such a wonderful idea for a series. For the life of me I wasn't sure what the difference was between ultramarine and French. Love how you concluded with a range of the color. The sketch is wonderful. Oh, received the sketch from you in the mail today. Thank you so much for sharing.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +2

      I'm glad you like it and that you received your sketch! I hope it helps you follow along when I do the tutorial here someday (soon, I hope!). I REALLY had to dig to find out the difference between ultramarine and french ultramarine, and to be honest, I still don't know if I'm entirely sure or can tell the difference by sight haha. I don't think any common brand still makes it with lapis lazuli at all, especially since Daniel Smith DOES make a separate pigment called lapis lazuli. The French Ultra is ever so slightly warmer, and since it's my warm blue in my palette, I guess I prefer that one but I really have to split hairs to get to a decision haha.

    So beautiful & see need to get better at added in later (darker) details. Learning warm/cool, water control & first few layers okay but need to practice (just doing that C shape) back to basic shape. Ty & these color spotlights are helping me so much!

    This is GREAT! I'm new to watercolor painting (actually ANY painting) and I will return to this video tomorrow when I have enough time to take careful notes. Do you have the voice-over narrative on a blog or is there anywhere I can get a copy of it and the future 'color spotlight' videos as they come out? THANKS for sharing such valuable info!

      Thank you! It's a hippocampus :) A mythological sea horse. I have a more detailed version I did last year in my etsy shop. This was a quick repaint. It's the first thing when I think of blue, turquoise, and purple together!

    This series is really helpful for me! Are all the varieties of each pair of colors created by varying the amount of one color from the other and the quantity of water? Wish to see how u mixed them and the water amount u added to create such huge range of varieties! Can't believe they r made of the same two colors! Thank you for sharing and looking forward to see ur reply to my question.

    Ashamed to admit I'd never mixed Ultramarine blue and pthalo green. What a combination.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад +1

      You're not alone! I actually REMOVED phthalo green from my palette altogether early on because I hated the color on its own. What a dumbbell :P
      Another stunning combination that wont make it into this series (at least not for the time being due to their relative lack of popularity) is phthalo turquoise (phthalo green plus phthalo blue green shade if you don't have it separately) plus quinacridone burnt orange. LOVE!

    • @ChandlerWrites
      @ChandlerWrites 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the tip! I kept pthalo green in the palette because I never really fell in love with Sap Green; I liked the range of "foliage" greens I got when mixed pthalo green with yellows. Think I'm going to love this new series.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад

      Yay! I'm so glad :) I feel similarly about my green gold - I bought a tube thinking I'd use it, but I rarely touch it. I can get similar greens if I just dilute my sap green or add just a touch of yellow. Shucks!

    I have the Turner brand PB29 and I see no granulation. The Qor sample granulated beautifully. Is there that much variation between brands? Also I've noticed that all my Turner inorganic paints, PBr7, PB50, PR101 etc, cracked like mad when dried. Do yours?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 лет назад

      Yes and yes. I don't find Turner's granulated much and I have a lot of cracking with my Turners, particularly the ones that contain PW4.

  • @renmuffett

    I love Winser & Newton Ultramarine "Green Shade" that is even cooler than my Winser & Newton Winser Blue Red Shade. Winser Blue RS is comparable to many Ultramarine's and some French Ultramarines. Nice is you need a warm blue that's not granular at all.

  • @Keyboardje
    @Keyboardje 6 лет назад

    May I ask why you do include 'Winsor & Newton', but only the student kind 'Cotman', not the 'Winsor & Newton Professional' artist kind, as the other branches are all artist queality (I think)?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад

      I am limited to the colors I have on hand at the time of recording.

    • @Keyboardje
      @Keyboardje 6 лет назад

      Okay, thanks for answering. I thought there might have been some special reason. :)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 лет назад

      In my reboot of the series, I am using my premade swatch cards for the comparisons, so I have a little more flexibility that what I currently have on hand, but still don't have ALL the colors ;)

    • @Keyboardje
      @Keyboardje 6 лет назад

      Of course, If only, right?! :D
      Thanks for the extra info. I am following all your video's and find them VERY useful, as I am only just beginning to learn about colors, mixing and of course painting itself.
      I have a few Winsor & Newton Professional Water Colour tubes plus some from other types (three from Rembrandt, Magenta from Old Holland, and Cyan from Acuarela Venezia Maimeri Profesional Pomo Grande Italia), but I find I am still too er.. cautious to actually even dare to OPEN the tubes. (blush)
      Your excellent video's do give me a little bit more courage, I think... hope! :P

    Since Ultramarine Violet is Ultramarine baked, the best way to make a Ultramarine Violet from Schmincke is to bake Ultramarine Violet less .

    I combined ultramarine with crimson and it made grey purple 🤮

  • @foreveryoung548
    @foreveryoung548 5 лет назад

    I know this upload is old, but with all the history you cite in this video, how dare you call that ultramarine/burnt sienna mixture "Jane's Grey"... Blundell did not invent this combination, and it's aggravating AF that she decided to coin this and plaster it all over her blogs. Now, Daniel Smith is taking advantage of this marketing gimmick too. Very disappointing!
    I also think it's very ironic that Jane Blundell and Daniel Smith have released these half pans pushing her overrated "Ultimate Mixing Set" with "Jane's Grey" now also available in their tube paints... ultramarine and burnt sienna are both pigments you get when purchasing this set, which allows you to make this mixture yourself, and yet she advocates this premixed convenience paint, which completely defeats the purpose of a "mixing set" to begin with! Such a lazy way of thinking when it comes to watercolor, and extremely poor teaching with beginners.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 лет назад +2

      "How dare I?" - That's a bit strong, don't you think? I'm sorry it offends you, but I am a self taught, self researching artist, and Jane's website is where I started building my original palette, so yes, when I started working on this series, that was a huge influence for where I pulled information.
      However, to play Devil's Advocate, Daniel Smith's burnt sienna and french ultramarine is specifically what's referred to as Jane's Grey. DS's burnt sienna is different from nearly every other on the market, which does that make particular pairing unique. The same grey is not produced when using other burnt siennas.
      In general, I'm now a huge advocate for also building strong mixing palettes, but I still love having a convenience dark color on any palette so that I don't have to go through my other pans so heavily when mixing those same darks over and over again. It's called convenience for a reason, and when there are fourteen other colors on your palette for mixing, I don't think that that defeats the purpose of the palette just because you have one premixed color.
