WOW The TRUTH about using vintage HUGE GLASS on the Fuji X-T5

  • I headed over to a friends studio to photograph him making portraits of some vintage camera gear. What I found was he had purchased a Canon 800mm f5.6 FD for $350! A great deal on a beautiful lens. So we headed out to give it a try on the Fuji X-T5 which makes it a 1200 mm f5.6. There were some issues like a 20mph wind in our face which at 1200mm the image was bouncing all over the place. So the solution was a Gitzo aluminum tripod with a gimbal head and a huge sandbag on top of the lens.
    The results were actually pretty good for such a huge focal length. Then I was able to get John to talk about his project of photographing vintage gear. All in all a great day!

    The thing which most impressed me when seeing the 5,6/800mm FD-lens was the tiny little Leitz-Tripod which was actually able to hold in place. That is quite a statement about its quality! :)

      The best thing about the Leitz table tripod John used was the extended top ball head section. It’s a great little tripod for display of that setup. I would not make any photos with it like that but for smaller setups it’s great.

      Yes everything thing is fine. I just need to take time off in the summer too much going on. Thanks I had fun doing it. My new mantra for this Chanel is to have fun doing the videos not worry about the YT algorithm.

    It was great to wake up with the alert that you had posted a new video.
    That 40mp sensor will show any image quality deficiencies in the old glass. I wonder if a more modest 24-26mp camera might be more forgiving, such as an X-T2 or 3.
    Many of my old '70s Nikkors that were great on Kodachrome don't hold up on my Fujis, but it's fun to have the option.

      Yes you are probably correct. John shot some great stuff with it on his R6 no real loss of quality with the lens at native 800 mm.

    Nice to have you back! I took my first photo on my grandmothers Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. My first camera was a Pentax K1000 given to me by my father for high school graduation (almost 4 decades ago!). I treasure that camera yet haven't used it in years. But probably why the XT5 felt so natural to me. Shooting a portrait of it is a great idea. Great video!

      Thanks Steven. John is having a great time with his project. The Canon F1 and MF motor drive is exactly what I used for close to ten years.

      Haha yes I could have been. I tried everything to get rid of that CA never really got rid of it without messing things up.

    I can't even imagine what it would be like to shoot with that lens on a film camera. Seems like it'd be challenging enough on a digital camera!

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  9 месяцев назад

      Harold it was a gas trying to focus with peaking. The shot of the schooner crossing was very challenging but I lucked out and nailed it.

    Great video Kirk! Have you ever tried Minolta lenses on your Fuji before? I had a Minolta MD 50mm F1.7 and the rendering was amazing.
