The "big and strong" computer kinda got me because NASA was doing N-body problems on literal potatoes in the 60s with stacks of code taller than the women who wrote it, but somehow, processing large chunks of data in what amounts to be a database is outside the scope of most general home computing. Erika stated one of the first things any Computer Science student learns. All computers can perform the same processes, but depending on your processor speed, a task will simply take longer. If you don't have enough RAM, a program just won't be able to run because your computer doesn't have a large enough "work space" for it.
It's really telling that he talks a lot about how much he would *like* for the number to be. Not a prediction, not excitement at the possibility of learning more, he clearly just wants the number to be lower cause he wants it to fit what he wants, not actually a desire to learn more
8:26 "He's a gentle, quiet and unassuming person, and very humble" Wait, WHAT? Is it the same naughty boy Jeff we are talking about?... And even if he was, does it mean his work shouldn't be criticized? Are we in kindergarten?
I saw the Tomkins video and called him out, demanding to see evidence for his accusations. To date, I've gotten crickets. That which cannot be backed up by evidence can be dismissed. But that which accuses without evidence is _slander_
Lol Erika's editing in her "foreshadowing" cracked me up including the meme-ing, doom sound effects and angry emoji at your name lol. It was so brilliant and humorous, I had to be very careful not to spit-take over my screen during my hot beverage-sipping.
Yup. I watched that back when it came out, and even I could understand the problems with his methods to some degree. And this coming from a guy who didn't even take biology in high-school (probably for the best - YEC homeschool...) and sucks at math. It's amazing how incredibly basic his problems were. I don't need to be a geneticist to understand why controls and proper weighting are important.
It’s really disingenuous for them to provide a step that they demand you take in order to be peered reviewed by young earth creationists and then say “well you can’t publish with us unless you agree with us.” That alone disqualifies them from being taken seriously
Nah I don't like these kind of conclusions. I see this used by conservatives all the time when people comment on something absurd being said by them. Just getting a response out of somebody doesn't necessarily mean anything.
His unweighted sequences problem is MIDDLE SCHOOL math not high school. For any intimidated by the field of genetics, this is irrelevant - all he's doing is failing to divide to get actual averages, that's it. His "comparison" is simply looking at two fractions and pretending they have the same denominator when they don't. That's all. Literally!
My favorite part is how Jeff says that he doesn't believe you because he doesn't think your computer can handle it. Like... so? What you think has no bearing on her results, Jeffrey. What, do you think she just tried to run the program, failed, and then made up the results???
No, that is what Jeff would do. And why is that big computer sounding like … well … a dick measuring contest and serious micro-penis energy compensated by an overly large computer? And - not to forget - you can hire *serious* computing power from cloud providers for a few bucks … Rackspace, MS Azure, AWS, and a number of other sources!

The bit starting somewhere around 26:00 Carter says, “They changed the methodology,” like he’s caught them in some kinda trick. But, like, yeah. Of course they changed the methodology. They didn’t publish a whole new paper to correct a math whoopsie. They realized there was a better way to approach the research question - that’s why you’d publish a paper, Rob. Geez.
Is it just me or does his endless repetitions of "It's such a long video, it's so hard to watch" show how uncomfortable he is with the idea that some members of his flock might actually watch it? Isn't that the don't look behind the curtain thingy?
I watched that creationist complain!! He said, and I quote, "That Erika. Ha!! She got it all wrong!! But Jeff!! Jeffy got it all right!!" Then he looked in the camera while using his pocket watch as kind of a pendulum and said, "Erika wrong!! Jeffy right." I don't know Mrs Gibbons, I have this strong feeling that you got this one all wrong.
In fact, Erika gives enough information and references in her original video - the 2+ hours long one - that anyone with a computer can do the same thing for themselves. (Just don't use a computer with a dog of a CPU to do it.) Carter's response is just more of the standard creationist mentality of "I don't care what the actual detailed facts are, I'm just going to keep right on believing what I need to believe to cling to the religious doctrine I believe in no matter what the facts are." Which is exactly why no one who knows how to think straight takes creationists seriously at all anyway. Carter's own rhetoric shows why. They don't take science seriously, they don't take dealing with the facts seriously, and they don't even take their own rhetoric about "truth seeking" seriously (yes, they're complete hypocrites).
I'm not in academia myself, but I know several people who are, and if I've learned anything from them, it's that you *will* cry at least once while defending your dissertation. At 18:12 Dr. Carter exposes (probably unintentionally) the real problem with creationism, including young-earth creationism...reality has absolutely no impact on the "creation model." No matter what evidence one runs into, their universal answer is to shrug and say "well, God can do whatever he wants." Proving that what they're doing is religion, not science.
For a creationist, I can see how 2 hours of having your lies and bs called out could be quite the trial. For the rest of us it was glorious and better than anything in theaters😁😻
18:20 I don't know that I'd be quite so generous to say that Carter is saying biblical kinds follow the biological species concept. Sounds more like he's saying "kinds are whatever we say kinds are". It doesn't matter how small the difference is - even one single letter difference is enough for separate kinds. He will no-doubt flip-flop on the biological species concept, as creationists typically do, when anyone points out that this makes his model internally inconsistent. Ultimately, they keep things vague enough so nothing can disprove their model and therefore disprove their religious beliefs.

I actually did watch the "long" video (although at 1.25 speed), and despite my complete lack of genetics background (though I do have a math degree), you made it not only clear, but interesting enough for me to stay with it and feel like I understood a good bit of it by the end.
I have to admit to being childishly amused that they are being debunked by a (brilliant) young woman -- that's got to hurt, with their world view.
Yea, that has to be a real zinger in a community that seems to have misogyny turned on as a standard setting way too often.

Consider it an honor, Erica! You know you're doing a great job when they feel threatened! Keep it up!

Then he looked in the camera while using his pocket watch as kind of a pendulum and said, "Erika wrong!! Jeffy right." I don't know Mrs Gibbons, I have this strong feeling that you got this one all wrong.
In fact, Erika gives enough information and references in her original video - the 2+ hours long one - that anyone with a computer can do the same thing for themselves. (Just don't use a computer with a dog of a CPU to do it.)
Carter's response is just more of the standard creationist mentality of "I don't care what the actual detailed facts are, I'm just going to keep right on believing what I need to believe to cling to the religious doctrine I believe in no matter what the facts are."
Which is exactly why no one who knows how to think straight takes creationists seriously at all anyway.
Creationists are just children that couldn’t shake one more Santa story so it stuck into adulthood.
