There are deadly toxic members of this genus, only eat them if you're certain which species you have - and know it's edibility.

I once cooked a batch of these false morels, gyramitra ! That landed Me in the hospital. My family grew up calling these German browns , I’ve been eating this since I was a kid . Here’s the rub , cook them covered you can get so I’ll you be spending a night or two in the hospital. Cook them uncovered I never had any issues, but I imagine still mildly toxic

I find those here in Oregon.
We call them false morels or Bull Nose mushrooms.
My research says they contain a compound that the liver cannot digest. Therefore, the compound accumulates in the liver.
I saw a very old women picking them. She had quite a few, and said she had been eating them all her life.
    But... Honestly...
She was one though looking old bird. Skinny as a bone, with loose wrinkled up leather for skin.
I cooked up two of mine.
    They taste pretty good.
But after doing the research, I'm going to leave them for the forest creatures.🦨🦔🐿️🦉🦌🦡
Love you and your beautiful family.

When people talk about false morels, they’re referring to one of three species:
Gyromitra esculenta - this specific species is most commonly referred to as a false morel
    Verpa bohemica
    Verpa conica
All of these species look like morels, grow in similar habitats, and contain the same poisonous toxin.
False morels are poisonous both through consumption and through inhalation.
Heating removes the neurotoxin from these mushrooms and turns it into a gaseous form. This means that if you cook false morels in a small, poorly ventilated space, you can inhale enough neurotoxin to get sick.
Technically, if you cook them safely and thoroughly, you can remove all of the neurotoxins from false morels. This would make them safe to eat. But even slightly undercooking the mushrooms can leave enough neurotoxin to get you sick. Be on the safe side - never cook or eat false morels.
Not every false morel contains the same amount of this neurotoxin. The exact amount depends on factors like the species and the mushroom’s environment.

there are a few subtypes of false moral, or "beefsteak/red" mushrooms. There is one particular variety that has a higher concentration chemical called gyromitrin that some people can have very adverse effects because of it. i.e., diarrhea, headaches, vomiting, nausea, and dizziness also in rare event there has been deaths linked to it. Definitely eat with extreme caution cooking for long periods of time at high temperatures is said to help rid the mushroom of the toxins.
stay safe!! look forward to your next video!!

I went to a fungi fest in Missouri and a specialist came to talk to us. he told us that these false morels are toxic in certain states. however the ones that grow in Missouri are not toxic and have been eaten for many years and taste just like the other morels. he said all the books and forums will tell you they are toxic because they typically are, but apparently Missouri ones are safe to eat. I have found these by the giant melon sized in large patches.

I think they screwed my thinking up enough.... l'll just keep on eating them?

    This is what I found-
"We cannot recommend that you eat false morels. If you nevertheless choose to do so, they must be thoroughly cooked in a well-ventilated room, since the fumes will also contain their toxin (similar to a chemical used in rocket fuel). All species of false morels contain a poisonous neurotoxin called gyromitrin. This affects your body's mucus membranes and digestive system. It can lead to widespread problems throughout your body, but most cases cause symptoms that resemble a bad stomach flu."

  • @Richjack3
    @Richjack3 Год назад +1

There is a lot of misinformation in this comments section, I will do my best to clear this up for the safety of those wishing to try these.
There are both deadly toxic & edible members of the Gyromitra genus. The ones found in this video are members of Gyromitra section gigas, which contains the edible Gyromitra species.
Gyromitra esculenta and it's close relatives are the deadly toxic members of the genus, which contain large amounts of gyromitrin. These can cause liver failure and death, so please only consume these mushrooms if you are 100% certain on your identification, and are certain on the edibility of said species.
