  • It's almost time to fight the first battle of the First Elopation War. We've drawn up the sides, thrown the armies at each other, and now the Dextron Army Group One has backed the outnumbered Sinistrean Northern Army almost against the walls of the capitol. Now that the two forces can come to actual blows, we have to establish the battlefields and initial deployments. Let's see which general can find the more suitable terrain...

This has all the stuff of a great story in the making. Pure David and Goliath. Better than the telly, for sure!

I love this series. I know I'm really late to the party, but plan on watching all of your solo wargaming videos. You do a great job of explaining what, why, and how you are using the tables and making your decisions. It's fun to hear you coming up with it as you go. I'm planning on using a similar system for a campaign to set the background of an area of a D&D world I'm building

Really loving this series. Just getting back into table top gaming using 1x2 rules so this is firing me up to create a solo campaign. Good stuff. As a loyal Brit I have to say I think you’ll find it’s your pain er sizes that are a bit wacky 🤗

Why didnt you put the artillery reinforce point past the stream? A wicked outflank would seriously hamper the defenders' plans and be pretty historical. With an incompetent general, there may be ways such a bold move would prove disastrous instead!

Great series. You have inspired me to dust off my copy and create a campaign to get Great Torrington and Oltonia duking it out. Will use One Hour Wargames for the tactical battles.

Somehow I don't see that farm seeing a great deal of action with the river crossing and pass through the hills forming natural choke points , it could end up being a very bloody day for a poor commander.

Definitely. In a normal one-to-one balanced scenario it opens up some possibilites, but with more than a 2:1 advantage like this? With so few units on the board for the defenders, they've given up that potential strongpoint early. Might have made a good first redoubt to throw the attackers into confusion, or slow them down, if the Sinsitreans had just a few more stands to throw into the mix.

I would have brought the defenders cavalry in behind the left hand side of my infantry on the hill to threaten any advancing infantry. Then have the guns suppress the enemy cavalry before they try to advance on the hills also allowing the cavalry to launch counter strikes on any forces forced back from the hill line. I think I'm working on a Wellington principle use that reverse slope and hammer them as they approach with the guns before unleashing a withering musket volley and let the cavalry mop them up as they run, and if things don't go to plan withdraw along the road and have the cavalry screen your withdrawal. But as they say the best laid plans only last until first contact with the enemy if his plans don't match yours that is so pray for a numerical advantage or have something that will negate their advantage , or hope they are unlucky stupid or at best both.

    Dear Mr. Wargaming,
Putting this in a comment because I don't know of any way to message you a warming question. Old to wargaming, new to your channel. I need your help. I've been dreaming of running a solo wargame campaign using some old MERP sourcebooks and maps. In particular the Angmar sourcebook has some awesome maps and detail for orders of battle for the forces of Angmar during the middle of the third age of Middle Earth. I'm envisioning a campaign centered around an ousted Dunedain lord trying to carve back some of his nearly fallen kingdom in the face of the forces of the Witch King at the height of his power. I tried for a couple of years to do this in GURPS 4th ed using the Mass Combat and Realm Management supplements, but they keep letting me down. I want to run something that can handle the scale the way AD&D can but I'm not sure it's the right fit for middle earth. Should I just do Chainmail? Give it a go with AD&D as you've demonstrated? Something else I haven't heard of? What say you? Thanks in advance.
    Bob

Are you going to play this on one of those octagonal grid sheets or are you going to do a full bat rep? Also please keep this going because it's been very interesting👍👍

    • @TheJoyofWargaming

Full battrep using 2x2 Napoleonics coming up. The series stands at seven episodes, and then hits a bit of a wall that I'll need the help and advice of my viewers to smash through.
