This is as hard-headed and realistic as well as strategic a GM as you’re going to see. Not every single signing or pick or trade is going to earn an “A” , but the plan is consistent and the execution is sound. Detroit needs Larkin both as the rare personality to be an excellent hometown captain, and as a fast, competitive, two-way center. Beyond him, the rebuild isn’t far enough along to overpay to keep Bert and Hronek. Not when there’s a 1st round pick, plus, on the table for each. New Jersey and even Ottawa are for various reasons substantially ahead of Detroit. Yzerman knows just how hard it is to really contend in the playoffs and this team needs more high-end talent that can fit a longer timeframe to contend. Like he said, those players could be found via the draft or by using extra high picks to acquire young players just hitting their prime. This GM is not going for the mushy middle. Bad lottery luck has made this rebuild more difficult but he’s clear-eyed about what this team needs and is not rushing it. Yzerman may not be a smiley, effusive personality (though he does have a wicked sense of humor that comes out every so often with the media) but he’s not a people-pleaser. I'd say Buffalo is ahead of Detroit as well. Their defensive issues are understandable considering the average age of their blue line is something like 21. But they have 9 forwards that will probably be there in the next 5 years that all look really strong, and I don't see Detroit having a forward core that remotely compares. Both teams have goalie issues as well, so Buffalo has the edge in the forward group at least. I think it's a good idea to not peak too early. The Leafs definitely peaked too early. They could have definitely benefitted from a few more drafts. There's really no rush. New Jersey and Buffalo were both very slow to get good, and benefitted enormously with good draft picks and prospects. Their systems are full of them and the cap hits on their players are pretty low too. I think this is smart. So we can't judge him? How much longer are we going to sell at each and every deadline? They are going to miss the playoffs for 7 straight seasons 3 more and they hit Buffalo levels of bad. Eventually you have to sign guys. Yeah he did that in Larkin, Walman and Määttä but guys like Bertuzzi you want for playoff runs. Everyone was so excited after the roadtrip in Canada and now everyone is saying they are terrible because they lost two games to Ottawa. Even really good teams lose to bad teams. Boston being the exception
@@slaybomb96 Ben, remember it took 14 years to win another Cup after drafting Yzerman. And with parity, I'm ready to be patient even if I don't live to see the next Cup. I'd be happy to see a great, competitive club.
All the disappointment around the moves at the deadline comes from last weekend. The western trip was really great, and there was an opportunity to make a statement in Ottawa, being that we are on parallel rebuilds. They didn't make the statement. The western trip maybe dangled some hope out in front that they were about to take a major step as opposed to the baby steps they've made the last few years. I think we're very close to expecting them to make the playoffs. These moves will help ensure that progress continues.
Vrana was too much of a risk to keep here with the issues he was having and clearly Yzerman knows more then we do as fans so I respect that decision well as any others he makes they are all happening for the bigger picture
I've been watching the Wings since before Stevie was drafted and even though he normally on the quiet side, his reaction when asked about Vrana made me think the same thing. Stevie tends to be quiet but I don't think he is easy to deal with, especially when you make him mad. I also think the vax thing with Bert didn't settle to well with him. I really did like Bert though and we will miss that edge he plays with.
I love Stevie Y so much man. He rarely puts himself in the media, and the few times he does, it's during a hot management time like Free Agency, Trade Deadline. He literally only cares about this team being a future dynasty, and it shows. Yeah I'm very upset we lost Bertuzzi, and even Hronek. But everybody who we lost, was honestly a blessing in disguise. Personally the players we have right now, our core guys, are the perfect players to build around.
Stevie Y was the man. My all time favorite player, I modeled my game after him when I was still playing. The quiet leader. Built the lightning dynasty, and hopefully he can build the wings the same way and bring the cup back to hockey town
As an Avs fan there two awesome gm’s in the league and thats Sakic and Yzerman. I know Sakic is not GM anymore but those two guys are two of the best any franchise could have at the helm.
Steve is a very shrewd GM, and there is no question that the Wings are heading in the right direction, but as he said, it is going to take some time to build a championship-caliber team and the fans will have to be patient.
Good for you Steve for sticking to your convictions and Not letting Most of the Know Nothing Morons who call themselves fans get to you or cloud your thoughts. And if I've made a few of you Know nothings mad,aw isn't that too bad😅
I don’t understand all the “Bert got the short end of the stick, this is so unfair for him and Larkin” ect. Bert chose to play hardball with the contract for a couple years now. He COULD choose to sign with Detroit in the off-season. He just doesn’t want to
He has been a contract problem for a while. Bertuzzi thought he was worth a lot more. The whole vaccination thing was not going to forgotten. He’s gone. I think it’s a great move
As a previous Canucks fan I can honestly say I'm jumping ship and looking for a new team to follow. Not sure if it will be the Red Wings but seeing you guys commit to an actual rebuild is certainly enticing.
@@carbb5760 time and patience, if you look at his playing career, he got things done in his own time, and the fans might have been disappointed but in time...
Steve must know there are 4 right handed Dmen that will be available in the first round of the 2023 draft to replace Hronek. It is a rare instance of that many right handers available in the top 32 picks and some with great size......Axel SandinPellikka, Lukas Dragicevic Oliver Bonk, and David Reinbacher
That's why they haven't taken a legit step since he's taken over. They have 2 young players making an impact, the rest are free agent acquisitions or overpaid Larkin. Yzerman isn't a God, he's human. And he's making a fuck ton of mistakes
@@HunterMagunter what are your qualifications for judging Yzerman? Just curious how many successful NHL teams you have built, or are you the Matt Millan of Hockey? Basically an observer who has watched for years and sounds like he knows what the fuck he is talking about?
@Rick Allen what team did he build? While he was the GM in tampa the team wouldn't win, brisebois came in and won a cup instantly. Yzerman is beyond overrated
When asked about Vrana: “I don’t think I can really go into details on a lot of the things that have gone on.” Translation: He’s a cancerous player and there is a reason(s) no one picked him up on waivers.
If theres a reason noone picked him off waivers, then how did we trade him for a 7th rd pick and prospect? Dont try and translate things for Steve he choose all his words carfully.
Mr. Yzerman we understand what your trying to do and fully support, believe, trust in you about your decisions. You being a former players i know you fully understand and sympathize with how Larkin felt about Bertuzzi, Hronek, etc. I know its gotta be a tuff decision to make especially for you being a former player as well. Nice job Mr. Yzerman. Lets keep our eye on the Cups
Walter Isaacson said and I quote, "Vision without execution is nothing more than hallucination". - To all our fans who say that our GM is doing things wrong or not getting a handle on things here are completely out of whack. We all have relationships with our players in one way or another, however all these deals made the team stronger and better in the long run. As everything points to the fact that it is the younger core that is the team that will take us further. It also means that many older or if we like, vets will have their place because that is what is a winning and sustainable concept in the future, to have an depth team on all sides with it. Two decades of success back in the day, cost a lot and the organization's assets weren't that big or deep in a "no cap" era, Thx Holland & Co. Stevie is absolutely right about who our future competitors are and the advantages RW has is we have Stevie & Co today, not Holland. Trust the Vision, The Yzerplan.
I think a lot of Wings fans began tuning out once we started to miss the playoffs, and so in the waning years of Holland’s regime, many weren’t paying attention to see just how bad his drafting was and how many poor contracts he signed. He committed to the rebuild way too late, and Yzerman inherited a terrible situation as a consequence. Anyone pissed that we’re still not a playoff team at this point in Yzerman’s tenure aren’t cognizant of these facts. I’m happy we were as big of sellers as we were at the deadline. I wanted to tank this year from the start. The only benefit of some of the FA signings this off-season was that we added a veteran presence for the younger players and allowed us to play some meaningful hockey up until the deadline, which hasn’t been the case for years. It allowed us to start building a winning culture, as well as have some assets to sell next year or even this off-season for the draft. With the amount of draft capital Steve has stocked up on, we can either draft multiple first round picks in a stacked ‘23 draft class, or use the acquired picks to move up in the draft depending on where we land by the season’s end. I’m hoping this team was made bad enough from losing Bert, Fil, and Sunny that we can rank low enough in the standings to somehow land a top three pick, which would move this rebuild along very quickly. We need another elite center, and this draft class has quite a few.
@@europason2293 Agree 110% here, we fans tend to forget all the little things that surround a team in their success. I chose to say Thank you to Holland & Co for the success, however I remember the shortcomings very well. Am also glad Stevie was active, he chose the right time and the way he did it, he pulled the bandage off quickly, not slowly and even more painfully for everyone involved. The saying is that players and coaches don't think, GM does and even here Stevie is very open about what choices there are. Also very happy that he chose to cancel reasons around Vrana. He wishes the Player and Person Vrana good luck in the future. So classy and it's obviously only ONE journalist that was stupid enough to ask questions. Look at Stevie's body language and his jaw when the question was put to him. For all those fans wondering why She is given the opportunities to ask questions first? It is better to start a meeting with a negative attitude and end it in a positive spirit. The blue print for the model is: Positive, Negative, Positive because you should always end a meeting in a positive spirit because that is where you start the next one. When there are ONE party who do not want to play ball, the model is simplified to negative, positive.
@@europason2293 I 100% agree, but don't hold your breath on hitting a top 3 pick without extreme lottery luck (which would make up for all the lottery bad luck of past years!). Some teams are way too ahead on tanking. It will be very hard to draft higher than 8th overall. On the bright side though, this draft is said to be exceptional and we will draft 5 times within the first 50, maybe even within the first 40. All our 2nd round picks are from bottom ten teams (ours, VAN and STL).
@@philippemineau2015 Don't get me wrong, I'm not holding my breath for landing top 3 or even top 5 in the lottery, if we couldn't get first when we were dead last by a massive margin, I doubt we'd win this year barely being in the running. That said, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that a team that does land high would be willing to depart with their pick for our two firsts, and maybe a prospect along with it. As long as we draft another center in the top 10 of this draft I think it'd be a successful first round.
@@europason2293 yeah, with 5 picks within the first 50, we could potentially find a way to trade up a few spots, by doing something like what you say. If this year's draft class is indeed as good as the one in 2015 (like I've heard many people saying), I think that a lot of the team's future successes (or failures) will be determined there. Even if Yzerman doesn't find a way to trade up, this draft could very well end up being a homerun. In 2015, the Bruins had 3 firsts and mostly bricked, but the players drafted just after have become cornerstones of their franchise (I think it was Matthew Barzal, Kyle Connor and Thomas Chabot). Personally, I have high expectations, especially knowing how good Steve Yzerman is at drafing.
As a lifelong Flyers fan l wished Fletcher would be alot better than Hextall was like Yzerman is far better than Holland , but the Flyers are doomed for years to come as the Wings will be a top 5 team in 4 years
Well guys; we put a lot better players on the roster… and we were a whopping, 4 more wins better through 60 games compared to last year… so absolutely free up cap space and back to accumulating high draft picks!!! Larkin is a high end 2nd line center, and Zadina is a bust!!! The league don’t even want em!!! Yzerman knows what’s up!!! Let’s Go YzerPlan!!!
It may be because the Canucks' owner doesn't want to allow for a proper rebuild. Yzerman said that he wasn't shopping Hronek, so if the Canucks wanted to get him, there were going to have to pay for it. It may also all be on Patrick Alvin and he may even actually have a decent reason for doing this trade. It's hard to have an accurate representation of the situation because of this whole Aquilini interference thing, which always leaves us guessing
@@philippemineau2015 I'm germane to the ownership situation, I'm just wondering if Vancouver could have gotten Hronek for much less, either now or later.
Despite having completely different personalities, 💲the GMs in Detroit, Columbus and Montreal seem to think more strategically than their counterparts.
I love that Yzerman is building a solid foundation for long-term success. I don't want to jinx it, but I think the Lions are finally doing the same thing. I've been wanting it for years
I think had they won against Ottawa it would have put them in a very difficult position. with like a 30-50% chance of getting into the playoffs. THE ABSOLUTE WORST place to be in is just missing the playoffs and not being a lottery team. Losing to Ottawa may have been a blessing in disguise, I really like how quickly he moved after those 2 bad losses. Similarly how quickly Ottawa became buyers. Both teams are on similar trajectories
I don’t think Yzerman cares as much about this, but if he was going to sell Bertuzzi regardless, those 2 losses make the move so much easier to sell to the fanbase. Imagine if they’d won and they were in a major playoff push and he sold one of their 3 best forwards? I still think it would’ve been the right move but there’d be at least a decent portion of the fanbase against SY for the first time since he was hired
@@chrismoleski6213 I agree it would have been very hard to sell a young stud like Bertuzzi had they won those 2 games, I dont think he could have. Last year when Bertuzzi didnt get vaccinated and it cost the Red Wings his presence when in Canada I was surprised Yzerman didnt trade his ass right then and there.
All Wings fans frustrated about selling at the deadline should watch this. This year's team was never going to be the one to win a cup, and Stevie is building future value and leaving space for better moves in the coming year(s)
I blame Ken Holland for the big mess he left Yzerman behind.. when Yzerman took over Tampa he had all the pieces there & got them Stanley Cups.. Holland left behind a terrible Farm system, bad contracts, so yeah.. F U Holland, he bolts for Edmonton & I bet he's feeling good, wait till he gets fired if Oilers get an early playoff exit
Yzerman having patience with the rebuild. I'm a Rangers fan and while I'm happy where we are. I would've preferred a total rebuild. Maybe he'll sign DeBrincat.
Never have i ever questioned Yzerman. He traded the wrong guys. Vrana and sundqvist fine but Hronek needed to stay and Bertuzzi WAS our team’s identity player. Knowing we’d get less in return I’d still be much happier selling guys like fabbri Maata walman Zadina Osterle Hagg Erne suter or even selling high on Kubalik.
yzerman is realistic. he knew we would get swept in the playoffs, so why fight with this team to get there? we had a good season, so trade for some draft picks, get some stars and young players on the team.
The Flames desperately need a new rink but I would trade a lifetime of watching games at the dome (oldest barn aside from MSG) to have Steve Yzerman as GM for the Calgary Flames.
Yzerman made good moves on Thursday with the Bertuzzi and Hronek trades. Followed that up with a poor day Friday. The handling of Vrana was terrible asset management (plain and simple…period). The Sundvqist deal was meh.
Nope. Vrana was cancer no one wanted. Eating 50% next year is much better than a buyout dragging out over more years. Sundvqist is meh, his return was meh. Not sure what you were expecting.
The one thing I dont get: why were the Wings in on that lazy bum JVR, happy that didnt materialize. The guy has been brutal for the past few seasons, last season I watched him get outworked and outmuscled by diminutive Jeff Skinner of all, he looked lazy and disinterested. Cant see a single reason for wanting him on our team.
Eleven seasons since a playoff round won, been a very looong time in the wilderness for the Red Wheels, think Steve is doing the right thing to concentrate on building his prospect pool for the future. Tyler Bertuzzi was a younger Glendening, Mantha, Abdelkader type not good enough for primetime and Steve did the right thing to get rid of that boat anchor just has he did with the other three stiffs.
Yzerman is the creator of building a team with only a certain type of player that is not based on statistics He is interested in the mental mind frame of his players and He has a criteria that a player must have. By doing this, the hoped result Is that every guy in the team cares more about everyone else but themselves Dan Campbell gets noticed because he is a bombastic character which is awesome. But Stevie Y, is a slow and methodical thinker and he is 5 step a ahead of everyone else. The Lions and Wings will win titles with these great men. And women Brad homes and Ms Sheila Ford and Marian illitc
This is not a knock against Stevie Y, but he is not media savy, he lets too much stuff that should not be revealed slip. I do want teams like Det, Ott, Buff, Az, etc to keep building and be a force each year. Go Wings, Ott, NJ, Buff.......Leafs too.
Lol this comment section is full of pissed Canucks fans. As much as I find the whole Vancouver saga funny, you guys have all my empathy. VAN's management delaying the inevitable rebuild not only pushes the good years that much further, it makes it so that it will take even longer to reach the other side of the rebuild, and rebuilds already are long enough

@@slaybomb96 its about long term, not short term and getting swept 1st round in playoffs
Watched and loved Stevie since 1986. I'm telling you -- - Stevie - is pissed.
I agree
Yup, think of this signs a deal higher than he wanted trades guys best friend away same day. Message sent.
@@jeremyyano8926 It’s their own faults, they could have got deals done. Yzerman took less money to get better players here when he played
I don’t get the crocodile tears. They both played hardball during their negotiations. They indirectly chose this
I've been watching the Wings since before Stevie was drafted and even though he normally on the quiet side, his reaction when asked about Vrana made me think the same thing. Stevie tends to be quiet but I don't think he is easy to deal with, especially when you make him mad. I also think the vax thing with Bert didn't settle to well with him. I really did like Bert though and we will miss that edge he plays with.
Love it!! Stick to the plan.
As an avalanche fan of 28 years, I can tell you Yzerman knows what he's doing.
You lost all credibility with "As an Avalanche fan"
😂 kidding, relax.
@Trav Zimmerman I like your style. Old hatreds die hard, and I've absolutely loved watching the Wings dwell in the cellar last few years. 😁
Larkin? 8 years? 2 or 3 maybe.
Stevie Y was the man. My all time favorite player, I modeled my game after him when I was still playing. The quiet leader. Built the lightning dynasty, and hopefully he can build the wings the same way and bring the cup back to hockey town
You never played hockey. Nobody believes you

I'm jus glad Stevie is back home and doing it
.he had the success in Tampa and he won't fail with the wings so be patient fans.

From Minute 15 to 21 Stevie Speaks the Truth 💯 👏🏼
This man should not be questioned on his decision/decisions he absolutely knows what is best for the team both long/short term

Too much of a risk
Off the ice issues as well
He has drug issues, if having personal issues makes you a cancer I wonder how supportive you are to your family when they need help
If theres a reason noone picked him off waivers, then how did we trade him for a 7th rd pick and prospect? Dont try and translate things for Steve he choose all his words carfully.
Mr. Yzerman we understand what your trying to do and fully support, believe, trust in you about your decisions. Good luck clearing cap space to do that.
This is steve yzerman we talking about
Do u see what he did with tampba
I hated the red wings but he was one my favorite players growing up!
Yzerman was saying the players he traded were not the right fit, add draft capital to continue to find the right pieces.
Never forget Stevie Y's biggest fan.. AM radio talk show host, the late Neil Rogers. RIP
Yzerman got rid of the negative and is in search for positive team players.I was not sure at first but Steve is moving in the right direction.
As a wings fan I'd really like to know what Vrana did to piss everyone off so bad.
Drugs.. he’s a great player and after washington nobody gave him a proper chance
Both the Red Wings and Sabres are taking this route and they will be scary good in the years to come
I think at this point Devils Looks to become most dominant in The next 10 year span. But sure they Will Be good too in 4-5 years
I really wish I knew what Yzerman was offering Bertuzzi and what he was asking for.
Yzerman is going to get this team some cups in the next 10-15 years.

I wonder who they are going to draft from using the draft picks acquired from the Canucks...🥺
As a former BC native he feels sorry for the Canucks
Love Yzermans low key dig at Pierre Dorion by saying "I won't say hey the rebuild is over or anything like that"
As a lifelong Flyers fan l wished Fletcher would be alot better than Hextall was like Yzerman is far better than Holland , but the Flyers are doomed for years to come as the Wings will be a top 5 team in 4 years
Well guys; we put a lot better players on the roster… and we were a whopping, 4 more wins better through 60 games compared to last year… so absolutely free up cap space and back to accumulating high draft picks!!!
Larkin is a high end 2nd line center, and Zadina is a bust!!! The league don’t even want em!!! Yzerman knows what’s up!!! Let’s Go YzerPlan!!!
Things were going on between Hronek and the Wings?
Why the hell did Vancouver offer so much????
I've been wanting it for years
If you’re here. You’re a true fan. Much love ❤
no... if we are here its because our favorite team just got ripped a new one by Stevie Y at the trade deadline.
Srteve Yzerman is pretty awesome
I blame Ken Holland for the big mess he left Yzerman behind.. when Yzerman took over Tampa he had all the pieces there & got them Stanley Cups.. Holland left behind a terrible Farm system, bad contracts, so yeah.. F U Holland, he bolts for Edmonton & I bet he's feeling good, wait till he gets fired if Oilers get an early playoff exit
Yzerman having patience with the rebuild. I'm a Rangers fan and while I'm happy where we are. I would've preferred a total rebuild. Maybe he'll sign DeBrincat.
What a master!
Yzerman is free to do whatever he wants. As a GM he's earned that trust.
THE MAN
He reminds me of Dean Lombardi with less questionable signings and I really liked Dean Lombardi.
I still can't believe the Wings drafted Filip Zadina 1 pick ahead of Quinn Hughes.......argh.
Holland's last drafts were really rough, but on the bright side, he picked up Jonathan Bergren later the same draft
Mr.Yzerman has his eyes on several players at this years draft.
And they will be drafting 5 times within the first 50
Future grand rapids griffins lmao
Our roster sucked. We get it Stevie. S’all good.
The Flames desperately need a new rink but I would trade a lifetime of watching games at the dome (oldest barn aside from MSG) to have Steve Yzerman as GM for the Calgary Flames.
The only one that surprised me was the Hronek trade. We’re so thin, with nothing in GR. It’s not like GRG are exceptional or anything 😭
Can you be the GM for the Flames?
Yzerman made good moves on Thursday with the Bertuzzi and Hronek trades. Followed that up with a poor day Friday. The handling of Vrana was terrible asset management (plain and simple…period). The Sundvqist deal was meh.
Nope. Vrana was cancer no one wanted. Eating 50% next year is much better than a buyout dragging out over more years. Sundvqist is meh, his return was meh. Not sure what you were expecting.
His arms are looking big 💪🏼
The one thing I dont get: why were the Wings in on that lazy bum JVR, happy that didnt materialize. The guy has been brutal for the past few seasons, last season I watched him get outworked and outmuscled by diminutive Jeff Skinner of all, he looked lazy and disinterested. Cant see a single reason for wanting him on our team.
Then when Dylan is ready to take over the team he'll be ready under the Yzerman plan
I trust the captain
Aquline and Alvin please take some notes and lessons from stevie y
Yzerman is the creator of building a team with only a certain type of player that is not based on statistics
He is interested in the mental mind frame of his players and
He has a criteria that a player must have.
By doing this, the hoped result
Is that every guy in the team cares more about everyone else but themselves
Dan Campbell gets noticed because he is a bombastic character which is awesome.
But Stevie Y, is a slow and methodical thinker and he is 5 step a ahead of everyone else.
The Lions and Wings will win titles with these great men.
And women
Brad homes and Ms Sheila Ford and Marian illitc
This is not a knock against Stevie Y, but he is not media savy, he lets too much stuff that should not be revealed slip. I do want teams like Det, Ott, Buff, Az, etc to keep building and be a force each year. Go Wings, Ott, NJ, Buff.......Leafs too.
Huh? Yzerman is extremely tight lipped you should listen to Kevyn Adams' presser he's talking about his discussions on trades he didn't even make.
Why anyone would question his approach? He's doing it the right way and we'll be in the playoffs 20 years again
