I always interpreted the flowers as a sign of life. a contrast to erens titan body. Titans had always been seen as a threat and a threat alone but seeing something as delicate as a flower completely unharmed by a titan seemed like a hint that there was a lot more to the titans than what we knew.
NGL the flowers could also be interpreted as Eren keeping his friends in a cage, letting them live inside a fake "Paradise", with enemies around them, just like how Marley let the eldians live inside Eldia/the walls, only this time, the occupants (Mikasa and Armin) know about the enemy, just like the reveal at the end of S3. It's also symbolic of what Eren does in the future- he'll do anything, including becoming the enemy of the world, in order to protect his friends and family.
For Eren's Attack Titan punching Mikasa after he transforms, I've always thought that the reason he did that is because he needs to have a goal to transform. Minutes before, Eren gets pissed off by her motherly nagging, and it translates to his anger after transformation.
The "shaman like chanting" is Hindustani classical vocals, but paired with western modern percussion. The second bit you include here, specifically, is a genre called "dhrupad" (pronounced "dhroo + pud, like mud). This type of music is frequently found in a lot of hollywood productions as well. The purple flowers are bellflowers that represent everlasting love. They appear around Mikasa and Eren. The three that appear in Trost could represent the trio.
It also appears in season 2 when Ymir is giving her love speech to Historia, exept that the flower is floating away in a stream as Ymir is being taken away

There's also that moment atop the walls where Pixis offers Eren a swig of his flask and Eren naturally spews it out. Eren is later confirmed to have quite a high alcohol tolerance, implying that he was hitting the sauce HARD in Marley.
When Eren said that ‘the Titans are not our only enemy’, I think he was making the connection that the colossal and the armored titans are likely people with a shift ability like him.
I really just think he was just referring to other people in the military especially after being threatened by them. And in later episodes, we also see that the government and royal family itself is against going outside at all. There's a whole story arc, the one with Kenny, where they don't fight any titans at all aside from near the end. And even before then there's constant suspicion that some people in the wall's know what's up and are preventing the scouts from poking around any further (like how the wall cult priest gets his nails pulled off). I think this is what Eren and with Erwin were referring to that "titan's aren't our only enemy".
I rewatched S1 last week because of your analysis and it made me appreciate it even more. And in this episode, Eren biting his hand because he might have seen Frieda triggering her transformation like that, blows my mind. I never even questioned the hand biting, even though I noticed that most of the shifters do it differently.
12:05 When you realise Isayama actually already plan his final chapter plot in his mind when he is drawing this exact scene where Eren entrust Armin to resolve this emergency peacefully due to Armin's wisdom as always. This is a godlike foreshadowing that help cut short the similar scene in final chapter since we are well aware now how good or bad Armin at this.
It is sad that most of the friends i have that dont like AoT is because they didn't pay attention to the details and got lost in the plot because of it. Like this story's plot is out of this world, it just twist and turns you every season in a new way you wouldn't have thought of.
I feel that! Its really hard to see how great AoT is on a first viewing, because you just don't have all the context yet (and even I only stuck around initially cause the action was great). But it gets 10x better with each re-watch! Sadly, it can be hard to sell other people on the idea that they gotta watch it several times to really appreciate it.

Remember that there was a tree / flowers on the path after Rod Reiss' Abnormal titan (or was it the baby titan)? The abnormal wrecked everything in its wake, yet there was a tree/flower growing. It must have sprouted because of the titan. I think it symbolizes life. Titans have been used despicably since the Ymir, yet they were never made for horrors, they were made for life and growth.
Considering the parasite thing, we can never be sure. Things growing at rapid speed & to immense sizes can simply be the byproduct of it's powers. You don't need to symbolize anything when it comes to titans, since Eren's actions with his titan is the direct proof that titans can be used to protect & repair things. I like to think that it symbolizes the fact that no matter what the f**k you throw at Earth, things eventually gonna grow back. You can destroy all humans & animals with all kinds of things but given time, things will grow back.

Now that we have the ending, Armin and Mikasa inside Eren’s ribcage has some interesting parallels to the final fight. To do my own overanalysis: while Eren is unambiguously protecting his friends in this episode, as the final episode makes abundantly clear with that shot of Mikasa appearing winged due to Falco’s arrival, the protective ribcage is also, well, a CAGE. Eren’s power is ultimately a prison, both for him and the people inside, and the bird trapped in the cage will need to destroy it to break free.

Thanks for making these :) After season 4, I went back and re-watched the whole show, and MAN that conversation between Eren and Pixis about how humanity will unite against an impossibly great threat hit SO different. Its really incredible how little conversations that initially don't seem particularly important actually say so much once you know the bigger picture!
one of my favourite details in the part mentioned at 19:21, is that eren doesn't know what he's doing because when he transformed the velocity crashed him into a building on his back. his nape most likely being hit in the process knocking him out and having his titan brain take over. (in season 3 a similar thing happened to reiner when his head got blown up by levi)
I think the flowers fully generated under his titan body because titan bodies come to life from nothing, the energy around his body might have made it bloom cause it was so close. Like how bodies and limbs are fully restored after they transform into titans.

Honestly, I never really had an idea for this, but it could simply be that when a titan transforms, that whole area is taken into the Paths for Ymir to do her sculpting work and she sent that back to as a subtle nod to Eren to move his ass.
They're burns. The markings are burns from being in titan form for so long it burned their skin. So erens first transformation and the transformation after don't have them. If he's in there for a while, he has some burns, and if he's in there for a really long time or multiple times right after eachother they show up more harshly.
When they show the titan shifters faces within the titan, you clearly see flesh going into the "markings". So the markings are where they become fused and are more like scars or open wounds. It shows the human and titan are partially fused together and it may be strongest at the eyes and face. This is best seen with Berthold who is missing a part of his face skin. Plus in later parts of season 1 we do see Eren nearly rip his own face off. And in a way this explains the "pure titans" dying when their nape is cut, because the human part is completely fused in the nape. In the end though I just think Isayama just didn't think of it yet as Falco has the markings.

Bertholdts face gets sunken in like that because he is the colossal titan, it takes alot to create that much matter and the flesh would be insanely hot. Yes, when they rip away from it, it's likely to rip their flesh too, but the logic of both of our statements can still stand.

It seems the marks just kinda appear when you tap into the titans powers in general, and not as a result of shifting into a titan per se.

I watched all your analysis videos today, incredible how well these are made. I’ve actually started rewatching the series with your videos, even though I just finished the series for the first time this past Monday. Excited to hear your thoughts on Eren attacking Mikasa cause after rewatching that scene, I question how much control (or lack there of) he had at that moment.
(Spoilers for S1-4) 7:24 another thing I want to mention is that in order to activate a titan you need to have a goal in mind. So when Eren sees the key in front of him he is reminded of what his dad said about how “a thought should flood over you: find the basement”. The reason Grisha tells him this is because of future Eren sending him those specific memories. So this one event might be symbolic of how Eren has been controlling all the events that has happened in aot (like when it is revealed that future Eren controlled Dina to leave Bertholt and go for Eren’s mom instead)
It's not simply as having a goal in mind. You need to have clear intent in order to perfectly transform and also have a strong connection with the titan. Eren was a bit angry at Mikasa but I really doubt he had a clear intent to harm / kill her. He was simply angry, this isn't enough for transformation. On the other hand is actual goal is to carry the rock and block the gate. But he wasn't sure if he could do it, he was focused on "trying," it. He was doubting himself. When you combine all of this with the fact that this is Eren's 2nd full-transformation, he didn't have a strong connection with his titan. Thus he simply lost his mind. He didn't try to punch Mikasa just because of their previous conversation. At that point he would try to kill anyone who was there.
You can also see this kind of weak transformation with Reiner, during Eren's first attack on Marley. He had a depressing conversation with Eren and then Eren turned into titan, meaning he is about to kill maybe thousands. Reiner only thought about protecting Falco so he didn't turn into a full titan. Then despite being conscious, he acted like he isn't. He just stood there and waited for his death. Only when Gabi screamed, he decided to act. He was very conflicted in his mind, he wanted to save the Jaw Titan, wanted to protect his friends & country but also didn't want to fight Eren. He didn't lose his mind because he was connected to his titan strongly but his conflicted mind caused a weak / irregular version of Armored Titan. The reason why Eren lost his mind but is able to create a physically perfect titan is because he knows he can transform and has the will to transform. He simply doubts if he will be able to control it & close the gate. Reiner's tons of conflicts prevented a physically perfect transformation, he completely lost his will to fight but he has to.
I think the three flowers when Eren transforms when shot by a cannon ball is mostlikely supposed to represent Eren, Mikasa, and Armin since the three of them are connected and so are the flowers.
19:10 I believe that connecting many of the decisions of Eren being influenced by his future self can be a little stretched far more often than not. I pick this one you mention for example. I watched these episodes last night and the thing that made sense and I feel confident about, was that Eren referers to fear in itself as an enemy, instead of it being humans in itself. Eren is no Armin, that much is clear, but he is also a genius, he may be dense in certain aspects but he is quite smart when it comes with dealing with people in anger, fear, anxiety, etc. He knows that proposing himself as the one single human that can turn into a harmless titan at will, it's just too much for the soldiers to listen, understand and accept. Especially to humans who just a few minutes or hours ago were victims of titan attacks themselves. Jean in the next scene brings this issue further into perspective, as if to prove that Eren's concern is not unfounded, with many of the soldiers falling into panic attacks and even planning to retreat without permission. All of that for Eren's concerns to be completely shattered by the chadness of Pixis, by literally yelling how this is the first chance the humans has ever had to win against titans in history.
My theory for the punch is that he was still mad at her for coming and was lurking in his mind, therefore the power was initiated with the mental state of being mad at Mikasa not Monke Lift
Seeing this right after seeing the finale, I'm loving the parallels I'm noticing with Armin. I would love to see a sort of "extra thoughts" episodes that goes over the extra details that tie to the final episodes from these first ones you already covered, I think they'd be small enough to cover in one or two videos, and I'd love to see what other details you noticed that I didn't.
I think your analyzes are really good what I think would be cool if you would spend a small section of the video explaining the difference between the manga chapters and the respective episode it's not that much of a difference at the beginning but quite a bit in later chapters. (I recently got volumes 15 and 16 and boy, did I notice that there are dialogues in there that simply explain certain things much better and things are left out in the anime that almost make the whole thing into a plot hole in the anime. The Reiner Annie and Bertholdt backstory in Season 4 is also very, very short cut in the anime)
Just smth to point out, the titan marks are acknowledged in Midnight sun, when Eren first sees Zeke he realizes he's the beast titan by the marks around his eyes. So they can see the marks, and the earlier episodes were probably just not included.
I was gonna say that saying that Eren was referring to Marley when he said “the titans aren’t our only enemies” was a bit of a stretch but he totally could have been talking about something he didn’t really know just like the Owl did when he mentioned Mikasa and Armin. Or maybe you did just over analyze it and he was talking about the government/military.

The part of the flowers not being there before in the dub 6:17 was linch pin in my theory during the release of season 1 in the US. I used to only watch dub and with only season 1 info to go by, i thought the titans were tree people and guardians of nature from humanity. Hange says later that titan flesh it light like tree bark and they are powered by the sun like plants then theres the forests of giant trees which were a trial run or precursor to the titan phenominon it and perhaps grisha had found a way to give that biological function to humans. Pretty goofy in retrospect also i had no theories for other shifters and somehow missed the wall titan reveal at the end
Some what i feel the flower symbolize hope and peace as every time there is one is like planting a hope to change around the situation, and when there is mass of it, it give us the feeling of peace before and after the storm, where the hope spread to become the peace that he was sleeping around before knowing the dread situation that he's in, it shows there is peace like Hannes wants in the wall covering the hill, and the freedom and peace he want beyond the wall for him and his friends
I always thought that the titan face scars being more noticeable had to do with how connected to/ in control of your titan powers you are. The more in control the stronger the scars because ur more in control when in titan form. Eren's first transformations barely had any scars because his mind/head was barely connected to the titan and he barely had control. However in the fourth season he has basically become one with his titan so his scars dont go away or even slightly appear in titan form
Yeah, that's a common way of thinking about it, but like I said in the previous video, Falco had the markings right away, despite not having any connection to the titan. So that's still not a 100% applicable explanation imo 🤷♂️
@@Koroto true, however you could say that falco had been trained as a warrior candidate, meaning he was aware to some extent how titans work so his body was more willing to connect to the titan on first transformation even if his mind didnt have a clue as to what was going on, eren however couldnt even imagine the concept of a human becoming a titan so his body may have tried to instinctively fight against the idea of being connected to one

The first time we see falco as the jaw titan he has enough control to only attack Floch. Also my theory separates "being in control" from "body adapting to the titan". Eren's body in that case would have instinctively tried to resist the connection to the titan, while falco's first Power Titan transformation was intentional to begin with. Also, why are you so agressjve towards be. I am simply coming up with a theory, in other words yes, a speculation as you put it. Nah you are straight up wrong. When I was like 7 years old I knew that that was a flask which are used for alcohol. Eren absolutely knew that was alcohol. He was indeed a young lad trying to prove he was tough and could drink.

I think Eren saying Titans aren’t the only enemy is referring to the humans behind the Colossal and Armoured Titans, given he just realised that he, a human, can transform into a titan.
My headcannon with the titan markings is that, because they come from the connection from the face to the titan flesh, the lack of those connections shows Eren's weaker control of his titan early on in the series
I think the flowers are much more literal and we see a few other times that vegetation sprouts around titan transformation, I think the sock that transform titans also makes life age faster

about the flower suddenly appearing, I think its related to the way Ymir would stare at the flowers. Specifically they represent the beauty inside this cruel world that forces them not to give up and give into your own extermination (as indicated by a few scenes like Ymir being chased into the tree by the Eldian "hunters" and maybe the greater meaning to them being featured prominently is showing that its something Ymir herself felt was relatable or that future eren used her power to create the flowers in such a situation as a symbolic inclusion for the beauty in this world that we all need to stop to appreciate.

I think if the flowers did actually grow from Erens transformation its symbolizing the hallucigenia. The hallucigenia is considered the source of all living matter, and I could imagine that sprouting lifeforms could be a direct affect of having the founder.
I think they appear in relation to the founders power being present. They don’t appear for every titan that I can recall only eren. And I also believe they are connected to ymir as right before she becomes a titan escaping the hunt, she falls and sees those flowers right before the tree. It could be a sign she is watching that particular situation as eren and Mikasa are incredibly important to her in a way and to the cycle breaking.
i think the dub added a hint about the power of the paths with the flower scene, everything in the paths happens in an instant so i think it was showing that time had passed only where eren transformed at ! idk that’s how i interpreted that on rewatch. that’s how long it takes ymir to craft even a portion of a titan
Nah, it's simply the byproduct of the parasite's powers. There isn't a fixed timeline in the paths. It's timeless. As Zeke said, in that place everything takes forever but happens in an instant at the same time.
Honestly the parasite & Ymir thing is another cool twist but both it's origins and the overall ending is written badly. Creating another mystery right before you end a story isn't a good idea, and a very very bad idea if that mystery is the cause of literally everything happened. Ymir is able to instantly create shackles for Eren, under Zeke's command. But has to spend years to create a portion of a colossal titan. Also when she got her titan powers, who was creating HER titans? If she had to create her own titans then why this doesn't work the same way for others? Ymir is killed and then eaten by her daughters, but the parasite remained as well as the "special spine fluids." So can you actually kill it? Mangaka released a "2nd ending," with some kids encountering a huge ass tree just like Ymir, heavily implying that it can't be killed and it's a cycle.
Mangaka then apologized after the backlash. So we are too invested in THIS story and we also want these characters to rest. But in order to explain the parasite and how it actually works, you need another big story. But if you do that, suggesting the parasite is still alive, everything happened during the previous story was for nothing. Which means it's gonna be a mystery forever, no matter how much we talk about it.
nah but then how would you explain zeke growing a beard in the paths waiting for eren, it proves time does move by just much much slower. he was able to make chains outta sand i doubt he could make a beard and long fingernails
@@fortnight5677 and tbh i dont think that’s the kind of story attack on titan is. it’s about human conflict and it uses eren and his friends as a way to tell a bigger story about the problems of humanity. the parasite is a source of power, just like any other we have in the real world. it can be used for creation, or destruction, so it leaves you hopeful that this time around humanity won’t make the same mistakes we always have. but it is also implied heavily that we will always continues fighting, and that there is no easy solution to human conflict. it’s just not a traditional hero saves the day story because isayama knows that isn’t realistic. we’re all slaves to something according isayama and i agree which is why there can’t be really any heroes or villains in this story. the mystery of the parasite is just that, a mystery. so i don’t think the last pages invalidated anything, i think it added to the overall message, that conflict is cyclical and there is no one true solution. it flips a lot of shonen tropes and therefore subverts your expectations. eren hating titans just to find out he is one, and then to find out titans are actually human, forces him to challenge his own worldview and then eren being talked about like he was a chosen one, contrasted with him realizing he isn’t special at all is beautiful because it’s not what you expect from shonen, then flipping it your expectations again and making him the main villain is genius writing. marley is the true villain btw just saying !!
Armin is inside Eren's protective ribcage instead of the stomach of the titan that nearly killed him, plus the ribcage protects the heart and lungs which are vital organs for the brain
Personally I think the meaning of the flowers is that they're a symbol of Eren's/humanity's desire for freedom. The idea is best explained in the lyrics to Red Swan - the flowers struggle and reach up towards the light/the sky, just as we often see characters reaching upwards to the sky (often when they see a bird. In this specific example, Eren and his friends are unarmed and massively outnumbered, facing down a shoot-out, and so he does the impossible (transforming into a titan) to ensure they survive, just as the flowers keep growing even with a massive titan carcass sitting on top of them. I might be wrong of course; it's just my thoughts on it. 🤷♀️
I think the titan markings may be removed by Paths Eren as to keep the military from getting too involved. I mean think about it, if they saw Eren with these strange markings around his eyes, they would have been more inclined to dissect him. We fear what is unfamiliar and with Eren not even looking my human around his eyes, that would be the final nail in

Considering it's Armin who sees the flower, it's safe to say that it represents the fact that Armin is able to see the beauty of the world even during a life-death situation. And titans can be used to protect even the most delicate things, they are not only for destruction. This makes Armin very different than Eren. Eren despite being interested in the outside world, isn't the same as Armin. Eren JUST wanted to be free, Armin JUST wanted to explore. The fact that there are modern countries outside means Eren can't simply go somewhere and do whatever he wants, there are restrictions, boundries, imaginary walls... This doesn't bother Armin, with the time he has he can travel around the world and see the things in his grandfather's book with his own eyes.
The inconsistency with the missing markings on Eren's face is actually quite simple: Isayama hadn't thought of them yet. I know that sounds like a cop out, but if you line up the production of the first season of the anime with where the Manga was at the time, you'll find that the markings hadn't yet been introduced in the Manga either. So really it's just a matter of the Anime going with what it had at the time.

It's easy to forget. People in our society often treats strangers like simplistic objects. Like in road rage or bumping into someone in the street and getting annoyed at the person. Or creating an us vs them narrative (and this can be done very subtlety too).
Flowers just represent beauty in in terrible circumstances. Or beauty in despair. They show up more as related to Mikasa viewpoint. While eren and armin are associated with birds and freedom. The birds have the ability to get up and go past the walls. Mikasa is associated with flowers that are growing despite the destruction and despair of story at any particular time. They don't seek change, can't leave, surrounded by terrible things but are beautiful regardless. Are growing regardless. It's the idea that eren is always fighting to leave the walls. Or a better future. Or whatever. While Mikasa would've been content to live in the walls and have a simple life with him. Because of who eren is he never stops to appreciate the value of small things in despite his oppressive circumstances. He will fight for it. But he never comments or notices it. He never stops to smell the flowers.
Eren's initial action as a titan being violence towards mikasa, on a first watch, might just seem like Eren losing control and submerging within the titan completely. And while this is very clearly the case in terms of plot, in terms of writing character, I do believe something else is going on here. Throughout the episode, we see mikasa almost smothering Eren with a controlling attitude. Mikasa wants eren to be safe above all else, but what does Eren want? On a first watch, you might think Eren just thinks he knows what he's doing and doesn't feel like he needs Mikasa's help. In retrospect, this may just be Isayama telling us that Eren wants freedom to go and do as he pleases, and sees Mikasa's constant "nagging" and controlling attitude as a threat to his core value in life. Him IMMEDIATELY attacking Mikasa, something he didn't do when he FIRST transformed, seems like an obvious reaction to that smothering behavior. You wouldn't normally think that the second transformation (technically third if you count the half-formed titan that stopped the cannonball) would have LESS control than the first one. Given that at this point we basically know for a fact that Eren merges into his titan subconsciously, I don't think it's a surprise that the attack titan's immediate reaction is trying to destroy that thing or person which is trying to keep him in a cage.
If all the eldians are descents from Ymir and can transform into titans just due to that, all of them also have royal blood. Ymir had only 3 children and they all had the blood of the Fritz king. So all the thing about Eren not being able to use the founder power due to lack of royal blood is pure bullshit.
Technically, yes. All of them should have some amount of Ymir's royal blood passed down, but I don't think that's the point or the reason why the founding titan responds to royal blood. I think the "royal family" is referring to the family which passed down the founder specifically (remember that Ymir split her power and the families each passed down one of the titans). So in essence, yes - Eren technically has Ymir's blood, but the founder only responds to the family who has passed the titan down and thereby has "purer" blood in the context of the founding titan. Though all of this is purely my own interpretation, so take that for what you will. 🤷♂️ Tl;dr - I think the idea is that all the other Eldian families have "diluted" their royal blood too much, so the only one to which the founder responds is the one who passed it down in the first place.
@@Koroto Bullshit. They do not repeat inter family marriage in order to preserve "blood purity". If that was the case, Eren's brother would not be considered royal blood anymore, since his blood was diluted, and the plot would not have been as it was.
It's not only about "blood." But also about the parasite and spine fluids. You should also remember that this story has an unreliable narrator. You constantly see the events from one point of view, your knowledge is limited always. The story has ended but you as reader / viewer still don't have all the answers.
We thought the world outside the walls is just filled with titans. At best, people speculated there could be villages with people who can turn into special titans. Most didn't expect the island being a prison for a certain race, and surely didn't modern civilizations (compared to island.) Annie, Reiner and Bertholdt were already included in the story but the narrator kept their secrets, because it was a plot point. But the more the story progressed, the more unknowns appeared everywhere. Zeke is able to control the titans and able to create some sort of gas with his spine fluid, to turn people into titans. He doesn't know how and why.
The information given is always limited and biased. It's what the characters in the story think. They don't always come to the right conclusion. They are working with the things they are given, just like you. The fact that Ymir's children each ate a third of her spine, thus splitting the power into 9 titans... It means if Eren ate all other titans, he can use founder power on his own.
*SPOILERS* The ending and the scene with Armin is so hilariously the same it's not even funny. It's just impressive. ESPECIALLY because he just flat out states that he was the one responsible for killing Eren. Whereas in this episode, he looks to others to guide him. That's character development and progression if I've ever seen it. It needs to be praised more. Brilliant.
Never caught that Frieda bites her hand to transform, and those memories subconsciously manifest when Eren transforms. Crazy. Good catch.

I always interpreted the flowers as a sign of life. a contrast to erens titan body. Titans had always been seen as a threat and a threat alone but seeing something as delicate as a flower completely unharmed by a titan seemed like a hint that there was a lot more to the titans than what we knew.

NGL the flowers could also be interpreted as Eren keeping his friends in a cage, letting them live inside a fake "Paradise", with enemies around them, just like how Marley let the eldians live inside Eldia/the walls, only this time, the occupants (Mikasa and Armin) know about the enemy, just like the reveal at the end of S3. It's also symbolic of what Eren does in the future- he'll do anything, including becoming the enemy of the world, in order to protect his friends and family.

For Eren's Attack Titan punching Mikasa after he transforms, I've always thought that the reason he did that is because he needs to have a goal to transform. Minutes before, Eren gets pissed off by her motherly nagging, and it translates to his anger after transformation.
The "shaman like chanting" is Hindustani classical vocals, but paired with western modern percussion. The second bit you include here, specifically, is a genre called "dhrupad" (pronounced "dhroo + pud, like mud). This type of music is frequently found in a lot of hollywood productions as well. I am surprised to realize that none of the comments have already pointed out all of this.

The purple flowers are bellflowers that represent everlasting love. They appear around Mikasa and Eren. The three that appear in Trost could represent the trio.
It also appears in season 2 when Ymir is giving her love speech to Historia, exept that the flower is floating away in a stream as Ymir is being taken away

When Eren said that ‘the Titans are not our only enemy’, I think he was making the connection that the colossal and the armored titans are likely people with a shift ability like him.
I really just think he was just referring to other people in the military especially after being threatened by them. And in later episodes, we also see that the government and royal family itself is against going outside at all. There's a whole story arc, the one with Kenny, where they don't fight any titans at all aside from near the end. And even before then there's constant suspicion that some people in the wall's know what's up and are preventing the scouts from poking around any further (like how the wall cult priest gets his nails pulled off). I think this is what Eren and with Erwin were referring to that "titan's aren't our only enemy".

12:05 When you realise Isayama actually already plan his final chapter plot in his mind when he is drawing this exact scene where Eren entrust Armin to resolve this emergency peacefully due to Armin's wisdom as always. This is a godlike foreshadowing that help cut short the similar scene in final chapter since we are well aware now how good or bad Armin at this.
It is sad that most of the friends i have that dont like AoT is because they didn't pay attention to the details and got lost in the plot because of it. Like this story's plot is out of this world, it just twist and turns you every season in a new way you wouldn't have thought of.
I feel that! Its really hard to see how great AoT is on a first viewing, because you just don't have all the context yet (and even I only stuck around initially cause the action was great). But it gets 10x better with each re-watch! Sadly, it can be hard to sell other people on the idea that they gotta watch it several times to really appreciate it.

Remember that there was a tree / flowers on the path after Rod Reiss' Abnormal titan (or was it the baby titan)? The abnormal wrecked everything in its wake, yet there was a tree/flower growing. It must have sprouted because of the titan. I think it symbolizes life. Titans have been used despicably since the Ymir, yet they were never made for horrors, they were made for life and growth.
Considering the parasite thing, we can never be sure. Things growing at rapid speed & to immense sizes can simply be the byproduct of it's powers. You don't need to symbolize anything when it comes to titans, since Eren's actions with his titan is the direct proof that titans can be used to protect & repair things.
I like to think that it symbolizes the fact that no matter what the f**k you throw at Earth, things eventually gonna grow back. You can destroy all humans & animals with all kinds of things but given time, things will grow back.

Now that we have the ending, Armin and Mikasa inside Eren’s ribcage has some interesting parallels to the final fight. To do my own overanalysis: while Eren is unambiguously protecting his friends in this episode, as the final episode makes abundantly clear with that shot of Mikasa appearing winged due to Falco’s arrival, the protective ribcage is also, well, a CAGE. Eren’s power is ultimately a prison, both for him and the people inside, and the bird trapped in the cage will need to destroy it to break free.

After season 4, I went back and re-watched the whole show, and MAN that conversation between Eren and Pixis about how humanity will unite against an impossibly great threat hit SO different.
Its really incredible how little conversations that initially don't seem particularly important actually say so much once you know the bigger picture!
one of my favourite details in the part mentioned at 19:21, is that eren doesn't know what he's doing because when he transformed the velocity crashed him into a building on his back. his nape most likely being hit in the process knocking him out and having his titan brain take over. (in season 3 a similar thing happened to reiner when his head got blown up by levi)

Honestly, I never really had an idea for this, but it could simply be that when a titan transforms, that whole area is taken into the Paths for Ymir to do her sculpting work and she sent that back to as a subtle nod to Eren to move his ass.
They're burns. The markings are burns from being in titan form for so long it burned their skin. So erens first transformation and the transformation after don't have them. If he's in there for a while, he has some burns, and if he's in there for a really long time or multiple times right after eachother they show up more harshly.
When they show the titan shifters faces within the titan, you clearly see flesh going into the "markings". So the markings are where they become fused and are more like scars or open wounds. It shows the human and titan are partially fused together and it may be strongest at the eyes and face. This is best seen with Berthold who is missing a part of his face skin. Plus in later parts of season 1 we do see Eren nearly rip his own face off. And in a way this explains the "pure titans" dying when their nape is cut, because the human part is completely fused in the nape. In the end though I just think Isayama just didn't think of it yet as Falco has the markings.

Bertholdts face gets sunken in like that because he is the colossal titan, it takes alot to create that much matter and the flesh would be insanely hot. Yes, when they rip away from it, it's likely to rip their flesh too, but the logic of both of our statements can still stand.
@@bexzilla6388 How do you explain the marks appearing on eren when he awakens the founding titan tho? He didn't turn into a titan then. Also, same thing when he threatens hange while in the cell. It seems the marks just kinda appear when you tap into the titans powers in general, and not as a result of shifting into a titan per se.

I watched all your analysis videos today, incredible how well these are made. I’ve actually started rewatching the series with your videos, even though I just finished the series for the first time this past Monday. Excited to hear your thoughts on Eren attacking Mikasa cause after rewatching that scene, I question how much control (or lack there of) he had at that moment.
(Spoilers for S1-4)
7:24 another thing I want to mention is that in order to activate a titan you need to have a goal in mind. So when Eren sees the key in front of him he is reminded of what his dad said about how “a thought should flood over you: find the basement”. The reason Grisha tells him this is because of future Eren sending him those specific memories. So this one event might be symbolic of how Eren has been controlling all the events that has happened in aot (like when it is revealed that future Eren controlled Dina to leave Bertholt and go for Eren’s mom instead)
It's not simply as having a goal in mind. You need to have clear intent in order to perfectly transform and also have a strong connection with the titan. Eren was a bit angry at Mikasa but I really doubt he had a clear intent to harm / kill her. He was simply angry, this isn't enough for transformation.
On the other hand is actual goal is to carry the rock and block the gate. But he wasn't sure if he could do it, he was focused on "trying," it. He was doubting himself.
When you combine all of this with the fact that this is Eren's 2nd full-transformation, he didn't have a strong connection with his titan. Thus he simply lost his mind. He didn't try to punch Mikasa just because of their previous conversation. At that point he would try to kill anyone who was there.
You can also see this kind of weak transformation with Reiner, during Eren's first attack on Marley.
He had a depressing conversation with Eren and then Eren turned into titan, meaning he is about to kill maybe thousands. Reiner only thought about protecting Falco so he didn't turn into a full titan. Then despite being conscious, he acted like he isn't. He just stood there and waited for his death.
Only when Gabi screamed, he decided to act. He was very conflicted in his mind, he wanted to save the Jaw Titan, wanted to protect his friends & country but also didn't want to fight Eren. He didn't lose his mind because he was connected to his titan strongly but his conflicted mind caused a weak / irregular version of Armored Titan.
The reason why Eren lost his mind but is able to create a physically perfect titan is because he knows he can transform and has the will to transform. He simply doubts if he will be able to control it & close the gate. Reiner's tons of conflicts prevented a physically perfect transformation, he completely lost his will to fight but he has to.
I think the three flowers when Eren transforms when shot by a cannon ball is mostlikely supposed to represent Eren, Mikasa, and Armin since the three of them are connected and so are the flowers.
I wish you brought up Armin's speech here in the dub, it was amazing and Armin's VA was so excited too

19:10 I believe that connecting many of the decisions of Eren being influenced by his future self can be a little stretched far more often than not. I pick this one you mention for example.
I watched these episodes last night and the thing that made sense and I feel confident about, was that Eren referers to fear in itself as an enemy, instead of it being humans in itself. Eren is no Armin, that much is clear, but he is also a genius, he may be dense in certain aspects but he is quite smart when it comes with dealing with people in anger, fear, anxiety, etc. He knows that proposing himself as the one single human that can turn into a harmless titan at will, it's just too much for the soldiers to listen, understand and accept. Especially to humans who just a few minutes or hours ago were victims of titan attacks themselves.
Jean in the next scene brings this issue further into perspective, as if to prove that Eren's concern is not unfounded, with many of the soldiers falling into panic attacks and even planning to retreat without permission.
All of that for Eren's concerns to be completely shattered by the chadness of Pixis, by literally yelling how this is the first chance the humans has ever had to win against titans in history.
My theory for the punch is that he was still mad at her for coming and was lurking in his mind, therefore the power was initiated with the mental state of being mad at Mikasa not Monke Lift
Seeing this right after seeing the finale, I'm loving the parallels I'm noticing with Armin. I would love to see a sort of "extra thoughts" episodes that goes over the extra details that tie to the final episodes from these first ones you already covered, I think they'd be small enough to cover in one or two videos, and I'd love to see what other details you noticed that I didn't.

I think your analyzes are really good what I think would be cool if you would spend a small section of the video explaining the difference between the manga chapters and the respective episode it's not that much of a difference at the beginning but quite a bit in later chapters. (I recently got volumes 15 and 16 and boy, did I notice that there are dialogues in there that simply explain certain things much better and things are left out in the anime that almost make the whole thing into a plot hole in the anime. The Reiner Annie and Bertholdt backstory in Season 4 is also very, very short cut in the anime)

Just smth to point out, the titan marks are acknowledged in Midnight sun, when Eren first sees Zeke he realizes he's the beast titan by the marks around his eyes. So they can see the marks, and the earlier episodes were probably just not included.
That is exactly what he said when he said that he doesn’t know why they were inconsistent with them during the early seasons.
I was gonna say that saying that Eren was referring to Marley when he said “the titans aren’t our only enemies” was a bit of a stretch but he totally could have been talking about something he didn’t really know just like the Owl did when he mentioned Mikasa and Armin.
Or maybe you did just over analyze it and he was talking about the government/military.

The part of the flowers not being there before in the dub 6:17 was linch pin in my theory during the release of season 1 in the US. I used to only watch dub and with only season 1 info to go by, i thought the titans were tree people and guardians of nature from humanity. Hange says later that titan flesh it light like tree bark and they are powered by the sun like plants then theres the forests of giant trees which were a trial run or precursor to the titan phenominon it and perhaps grisha had found a way to give that biological function to humans. Pretty goofy in retrospect also i had no theories for other shifters and somehow missed the wall titan reveal at the end
Some what i feel the flower symbolize hope and peace as every time there is one is like planting a hope to change around the situation, and when there is mass of it, it give us the feeling of peace before and after the storm, where the hope spread to become the peace that he was sleeping around before knowing the dread situation that he's in, it shows there is peace like Hannes wants in the wall covering the hill, and the freedom and peace he want beyond the wall for him and his friends

I always thought that the titan face scars being more noticeable had to do with how connected to/ in control of your titan powers you are. The more in control the stronger the scars because ur more in control when in titan form. Eren's first transformations barely had any scars because his mind/head was barely connected to the titan and he barely had control. However in the fourth season he has basically become one with his titan so his scars dont go away or even slightly appear in titan form
Yeah, that's a common way of thinking about it, but like I said in the previous video, Falco had the markings right away, despite not having any connection to the titan. So that's still not a 100% applicable explanation imo 🤷♂️

Also my theory separates "being in control" from "body adapting to the titan". Eren's body in that case would have instinctively tried to resist the connection to the titan, while falco's first Power Titan transformation was intentional to begin with.

Nah you are straight up wrong. When I was like 7 years old I knew that that was a flask which are used for alcohol. Eren absolutely knew that was alcohol. He was indeed a young lad trying to prove he was tough and could drink.

I think Eren saying Titans aren’t the only enemy is referring to the humans behind the Colossal and Armoured Titans, given he just realised that he, a human, can transform into a titan.

My headcannon with the titan markings is that, because they come from the connection from the face to the titan flesh, the lack of those connections shows Eren's weaker control of his titan early on in the series
I think the flowers are much more literal and we see a few other times that vegetation sprouts around titan transformation, I think the sock that transform titans also makes life age faster
my biggest regret about this series is that you keep yourself from “rambling on for another hour”

about the flower suddenly appearing, I think its related to the way Ymir would stare at the flowers. Specifically they represent the beauty inside this cruel world that forces them not to give up and give into your own extermination (as indicated by a few scenes like Ymir being chased into the tree by the Eldian "hunters" and maybe the greater meaning to them being featured prominently is showing that its something Ymir herself felt was relatable or that future eren used her power to create the flowers in such a situation as a symbolic inclusion for the beauty in this world that we all need to stop to appreciate.

I think if the flowers did actually grow from Erens transformation its symbolizing the hallucigenia. The hallucigenia is considered the source of all living matter, and I could imagine that sprouting lifeforms could be a direct affect of having the founder.
When Eren says titans are not their only enemy, he's refering to people, he realizes that the colosal and armor are like him.

I think they appear in relation to the founders power being present. They don’t appear for every titan that I can recall only eren. And I also believe they are connected to ymir as right before she becomes a titan escaping the hunt, she falls and sees those flowers right before the tree. It could be a sign she is watching that particular situation as eren and Mikasa are incredibly important to her in a way and to the cycle breaking.
I really recommend you reading this moment in manga, were Pixis talks about humanity uniting together.
I noticed recently how Ymir reacts to the news that Eren is a titan. She deliberately keeps her face still and just nags Connie to shut up.
i think the dub added a hint about the power of the paths with the flower scene, everything in the paths happens in an instant so i think it was showing that time had passed only where eren transformed at ! idk that’s how i interpreted that on rewatch. that’s how long it takes ymir to craft even a portion of a titan
Nah, it's simply the byproduct of the parasite's powers.
There isn't a fixed timeline in the paths. It's timeless. As Zeke said, in that place everything takes forever but happens in an instant at the same time.
Honestly the parasite & Ymir thing is another cool twist but both it's origins and the overall ending is written badly.
Creating another mystery right before you end a story isn't a good idea, and a very very bad idea if that mystery is the cause of literally everything happened. Ymir is able to instantly create shackles for Eren, under Zeke's command. But has to spend years to create a portion of a colossal titan.
Also when she got her titan powers, who was creating HER titans? If she had to create her own titans then why this doesn't work the same way for others?
Ymir is killed and then eaten by her daughters, but the parasite remained as well as the "special spine fluids."
So can you actually kill it? Mangaka released a "2nd ending," with some kids encountering a huge ass tree just like Ymir, heavily implying that it can't be killed and it's a cycle.
Mangaka then apologized after the backlash. So we are too invested in THIS story and we also want these characters to rest. But in order to explain the parasite and how it actually works, you need another big story. But if you do that, suggesting the parasite is still alive, everything happened during the previous story was for nothing.
Which means it's gonna be a mystery forever, no matter how much we talk about it.

@@fortnight5677 and tbh i dont think that’s the kind of story attack on titan is. it’s about human conflict and it uses eren and his friends as a way to tell a bigger story about the problems of humanity. the parasite is a source of power, just like any other we have in the real world. it can be used for creation, or destruction, so it leaves you hopeful that this time around humanity won’t make the same mistakes we always have. but it is also implied heavily that we will always continues fighting, and that there is no easy solution to human conflict. it’s just not a traditional hero saves the day story because isayama knows that isn’t realistic. we’re all slaves to something according isayama and i agree which is why there can’t be really any heroes or villains in this story. the mystery of the parasite is just that, a mystery. so i don’t think the last pages invalidated anything, i think it added to the overall message, that conflict is cyclical and there is no one true solution. it flips a lot of shonen tropes and therefore subverts your expectations. eren hating titans just to find out he is one, and then to find out titans are actually human, forces him to challenge his own worldview and then eren being talked about like he was a chosen one, contrasted with him realizing he isn’t special at all is beautiful because it’s not what you expect from shonen, then flipping it your expectations again and making him the main villain is genius writing. marley is the true villain btw just saying !!

Armin is inside Eren's protective ribcage instead of the stomach of the titan that nearly killed him, plus the ribcage protects the heart and lungs which are vital organs for the brain
Personally I think the meaning of the flowers is that they're a symbol of Eren's/humanity's desire for freedom. The idea is best explained in the lyrics to Red Swan - the flowers struggle and reach up towards the light/the sky, just as we often see characters reaching upwards to the sky (often when they see a bird.
In this specific example, Eren and his friends are unarmed and massively outnumbered, facing down a shoot-out, and so he does the impossible (transforming into a titan) to ensure they survive, just as the flowers keep growing even with a massive titan carcass sitting on top of them.
I might be wrong of course; it's just my thoughts on it. 🤷♀️
I think the titan markings may be removed by Paths Eren as to keep the military from getting too involved. I mean think about it, if they saw Eren with these strange markings around his eyes, they would have been more inclined to dissect him. We fear what is unfamiliar and with Eren not even looking my human around his eyes, that would be the final nail in

Considering it's Armin who sees the flower, it's safe to say that it represents the fact that Armin is able to see the beauty of the world even during a life-death situation. And titans can be used to protect even the most delicate things, they are not only for destruction.
This makes Armin very different than Eren. Eren despite being interested in the outside world, isn't the same as Armin. Eren JUST wanted to be free, Armin JUST wanted to explore.
The fact that there are modern countries outside means Eren can't simply go somewhere and do whatever he wants, there are restrictions, boundries, imaginary walls... This doesn't bother Armin, with the time he has he can travel around the world and see the things in his grandfather's book with his own eyes.
The inconsistency with the missing markings on Eren's face is actually quite simple: Isayama hadn't thought of them yet.
I know that sounds like a cop out, but if you line up the production of the first season of the anime with where the Manga was at the time, you'll find that the markings hadn't yet been introduced in the Manga either.
So really it's just a matter of the Anime going with what it had at the time.

Flowers just represent beauty in in terrible circumstances. Or beauty in despair. They show up more as related to Mikasa viewpoint.
While eren and armin are associated with birds and freedom. The birds have the ability to get up and go past the walls. Mikasa is associated with flowers that are growing despite the destruction and despair of story at any particular time. They don't seek change, can't leave, surrounded by terrible things but are beautiful regardless. Are growing regardless.
It's the idea that eren is always fighting to leave the walls. Or a better future. Or whatever. While Mikasa would've been content to live in the walls and have a simple life with him.
Because of who eren is he never stops to appreciate the value of small things in despite his oppressive circumstances. He will fight for it. But he never comments or notices it. He never stops to smell the flowers.

Eren's initial action as a titan being violence towards mikasa, on a first watch, might just seem like Eren losing control and submerging within the titan completely.
And while this is very clearly the case in terms of plot, in terms of writing character, I do believe something else is going on here.
Throughout the episode, we see mikasa almost smothering Eren with a controlling attitude. Mikasa wants eren to be safe above all else, but what does Eren want? On a first watch, you might think Eren just thinks he knows what he's doing and doesn't feel like he needs Mikasa's help.
In retrospect, this may just be Isayama telling us that Eren wants freedom to go and do as he pleases, and sees Mikasa's constant "nagging" and controlling attitude as a threat to his core value in life.
Him IMMEDIATELY attacking Mikasa, something he didn't do when he FIRST transformed, seems like an obvious reaction to that smothering behavior. You wouldn't normally think that the second transformation (technically third if you count the half-formed titan that stopped the cannonball) would have LESS control than the first one.
Given that at this point we basically know for a fact that Eren merges into his titan subconsciously, I don't think it's a surprise that the attack titan's immediate reaction is trying to destroy that thing or person which is trying to keep him in a cage.

If all the eldians are descents from Ymir and can transform into titans just due to that, all of them also have royal blood. Ymir had only 3 children and they all had the blood of the Fritz king. So all the thing about Eren not being able to use the founder power due to lack of royal blood is pure bullshit.
Technically, yes. All of them should have some amount of Ymir's royal blood passed down, but I don't think that's the point or the reason why the founding titan responds to royal blood.
I think the "royal family" is referring to the family which passed down the founder specifically (remember that Ymir split her power and the families each passed down one of the titans). So in essence, yes - Eren technically has Ymir's blood, but the founder only responds to the family who has passed the titan down and thereby has "purer" blood in the context of the founding titan.
Though all of this is purely my own interpretation, so take that for what you will. 🤷♂️
Tl;dr - I think the idea is that all the other Eldian families have "diluted" their royal blood too much, so the only one to which the founder responds is the one who passed it down in the first place.
@@Koroto Bullshit. They do not repeat inter family marriage in order to preserve "blood purity". If that was the case, Eren's brother would not be considered royal blood anymore, since his blood was diluted, and the plot would not have been as it was.
It's not only about "blood." But also about the parasite and spine fluids.
You should also remember that this story has an unreliable narrator. You constantly see the events from one point of view, your knowledge is limited always. The story has ended but you as reader / viewer still don't have all the answers.
We thought the world outside the walls is just filled with titans. At best, people speculated there could be villages with people who can turn into special titans. Most didn't expect the island being a prison for a certain race, and surely didn't modern civilizations (compared to island.)
Annie, Reiner and Bertholdt were already included in the story but the narrator kept their secrets, because it was a plot point.
But the more the story progressed, the more unknowns appeared everywhere. Zeke is able to control the titans and able to create some sort of gas with his spine fluid, to turn people into titans. He doesn't know how and why.
The information given is always limited and biased. It's what the characters in the story think. They don't always come to the right conclusion. They are working with the things they are given, just like you.
The fact that Ymir's children each ate a third of her spine, thus splitting the power into 9 titans... It means if Eren ate all other titans, he can use founder power on his own.

The ending and the scene with Armin is so hilariously the same it's not even funny. It's just impressive. ESPECIALLY because he just flat out states that he was the one responsible for killing Eren. Whereas in this episode, he looks to others to guide him. That's character development and progression if I've ever seen it. It needs to be praised more. Brilliant.
