Wat Phu Man Fah - Angkor Wat Copy? - Sihanakhon Temple Complex Buriram Thailand 2024

  • Wat Phu Man Fa is a massive temple being built in Buriram Thailand. This temple has caused some controversy due to its resemblance to Angkor Wat.
    Construction started several years ago on a piece of land covering 200 Rai (roughly 100 acres). It features several stone buildings built in the Khmer style. Its resemblance to Angkor Wat has caused a great deal of controversy and the #SaveAngkorWat hastag.
    The head Abbot that is the vision behind the project said the styling came to him in a dream. He believes that he was a soldier that was part of the construction of the original Angkor Wat and now is continuing now after entering the monk hood.
    The controversy drew the attention of Cambodian officials that were invited to inspect the site. It’s been agreed that it has design elements of many different sites like Phimai and others and is not a direct copy of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
    The temple construction continues and is really amazing to see. It’s being built on a scale that is not seen anymore in modern temples. It’s estimated to take generations to be completed.
    For additional reading here is some additional reading on the temple.

    This temple is near Buriram in Thailand. It has many design elements from Khmer temples like Angkor Wat. Here is a video of Angkor Wat if you want to compare for yourself.

      @@sanwa2000 there is styling from many of the temples but the majority of it comes from Angkor Wat. They are a few years away from finishing the inside portion that will contain the central prang and the 4 smaller ones that resemble Mount Meru. I spoke with one of the workers that’s been on the site since the beginning and he told me about the plans.

      The minister of culture of Cambodia visited the site at the beginning of the construction, but there was a Thai monk who was responsible for the project, he took an oath and sweared to Cambodia that this temple is not a copy of Angkor Wat. If that Thai monk behaved honestly, so let’s be and hope there will be no bad thing happening to this temple 💕🙏🙏🙏💕

      @@NeekaSimon the head monk said the vision for the temple came to him in a dream. He said he was a soldier working in Angkor Wat in a previous life and now that he is a monk he will continue building. From looking around the building is different than Angkor and will be a nice addition to the area and respectfully.

      @@endlessjourneytravels The entrance of the temple, the gallery look like the Angkor Wat architecture and some arts look exactly like Khmer arts of Banteay Srei temple in Cambodia. The Thai monk sweared to Cambodia that he did not copy from Angkor Wat, he said he never lied, but do you know many Thai monks have been behaved very bad lately. A few days ago, a former abbot of a Thai temple was sentenced to 468 years in jail for stealing donation of 300 millions bath = USD$8.3 million. Every year, there’s at least one Thai monk sentenced to jail for stealing donation to buy a private jet, to buy gold and to buy jewelry etc. So, if that Thai monk lied to Cambodia, bad karma will come to him just like those Thai monks were sentenced to jail for lying.

So if they have Chinese ancestors it’s ok to say Chinese but it’s not ok to say you are Khmer because you have Khmer ancestors. There is more to it than that and not saying it’s because some people claim things online. It goes both ways as well. Thailand claims one thing and so does Cambodia. Just wondering how Siamese armies are carved into the walls of Angkor Wat. The temple was founded in 1150. It took around 20 years to build so that would be 1130 when it was started. What year did Siam become an independent state? If you say it became Siam when Sukhothai gained its independence that would be 1238. Even then it was a minor kingdom that was incorporated into Ayutthaya a couple hundred years later. The region of Cambodia was under control of Siem for about 6 generations until a land swap with the french allowing for native Thais to be incorporated back into Thailand and other reasons. I don’t see how these later events though make the inscriptions on Angkor Wat Siamese and a Siamese army. Please explain to me.

      @@qazer4445 I asked you to explain to me. Telling me to google it is not an explanation. I provided you with dates so please explain to me how Siamese can be carved into the walls when they were not even around at that time. Did they have a Time Machine, went back and fought the Champa and then returned to the future to sit behind computers and argue who owns the culture; Thailand or Cambodia. The history is much more complex than it either being Thai or Cambodian. Both countries share a heritage along with outside influences that have shaped each modern culture. Just wondering what you personally have invested in Angkor Wat. You didn’t build it and have nothing invested in it yet you come onto a video of a modern temple and troll about Thailand. The video was about the new temple and to be honest your comment is really boring and ads nothing to educate people that might be interested in the temple or some of the other temples in the region. You probably have never even been to Angkor Wat or even this temple. I have been all over the region and have seen with my own eyes all of what I talk about. Some how this Varman wasn't as powerful because they lack centralization. So when the Varman dynasty in the Northeast took control over Angkor from the 11th-14th century AD the real empire began. I'm Khmer, and I see many negative comments about Khmer and Thai culture. I will break it down below to clarify.
    The first Tai kingdom, called Sukhothai, was founded in 1238 on former Khmer Empire land by Si Inthrathit. Before the kingdom was founded, the Tai people were just a small ethnic group who were immigrants from the Yunnan province of China. They lived peacefully together with the Khmer people. The conflict between Buddhism and Hinduism in the Khmer Empire made it weak, and the Tai people took the opportunity to declare independence from the Khmer. While living on Khmer land, the Tai people adopted Khmer culture, alphabet, architecture, art, monarchy system, etc.
    Another Tai kingdom was born, called Ayutthaya. Actually, Ayutthaya's first king was a Chinese merchant who married a Khmer princess in Lopburi or the Lavo Kingdom, a Khmer vassal state (formerly the Dvaravati kingdom, a Mon kingdom controlled by the Khmer). Ayutthaya was a mix of Khmer, Mon, and Tai people. When Ramathibodi was crowned king, he inherited all Khmer culture from his father-in-law's kingdom (Lavo). With the support of the Khmer, Mon, and Tai people in Lavo, he united all the small Tai kingdoms that were under the rule of the Khmer Empire against the Khmer.
    Day by day, Ayutthaya became more powerful. Meanwhile, the central power of the Khmer Empire started to wane due to religious conflict. Ayutthaya invaded Yaśodharapura city (Angkor Thom) in 1352. When they won the battle, they took all Khmer people, including royal families, officers, scholars, Brahmins, and other Khmer treasures, to Ayutthaya. This is why Khmer and Thai culture are very similar:
    - The Tai founded their kingdom on the Khmer Empire's land and adopted Khmer culture.
    - Ayutthaya attacked Yaśodharapura city (Angkor Thom), won the battle, and took Khmer people to support their new kingdom. Over centuries, all the Khmer people taken from Angkor became the ancestors of some modern Thais. So, Thais did not copy from the Khmer; they inherited from their Khmer ancestors.
    - King Naresuan of Siam conquered Longvek in 1593 and also took Khmer people, royal families, scholars, and Khmer treasures to the Siam Kingdom. Do you believe all the people taken from Longvek were killed?
    - The Siam kingdom extended its power into the Khmer Empire's land. The Khmer people who lived in that area became Siamese, so their culture also remained and became the root of Thai culture.
    Why do Thais call themselves Khom Siam?
    Khom = Khmer
    Some modern Thai people are also descendants of Khmer people, not 100% Tai.
    Why do Thais not give credit to the Khmer? Because they are richer than the Khmer, and the Siam kingdom used to take Khmer treasures and people to become their own in the past.
    Finally, I hope Khmer and Thai people stop hating each other. As we are ASEAN, we should live peacefully together and forget the past.

    This Thai temple is a replica of Angkor Wat. The only difference is our temple is more ancient than the Thai temple. Thailand has absorbed so much culture from our history, especially from the collapse of Angkor Wat when the Khmer people were in a vulnerable crisis. This allows the enemies to attack to their advantage easily. Additionally, we have our ancient temple in Thailand, which has given them the chance to adapt to our traditions and culture; they even adopted the name Apsara, derived from the Khmer temple. "Thailand does not have Apsara," now they call it the Thai Apsara dance." Having said that, allow Thailand to dominate us. However, we Khmer people cannot allow Thailand to dominate our culture over our copies of culture taken from our history.

    • @endlessjourneytravels
      @endlessjourneytravels  4 месяца назад +2

      The temple defiantly has a lot of aspects taken from Angkor. They are using a lot of steel and concrete in its construction which was not used at Angkor Wat or any of the other Khmer temples. Some of the styling has been taken from Phimai and other sites so it’s not a direct copy but it’s very similar in many ways.

    My question is if I open a museum or gallery filled with fake Picasso would anybody go see it or buy it. Yes, it would likely attract attention, but the reception would depend on various factors. Visitors might want to see how convincing the forgeries are and engage in discussions about authenticity. My other question is I thought they had the same ancestry but My guess is wrong. I have been to Angkor Wat once I spent a whole day there would I go there again. Yes, I would because it is a masterpiece. Cambodia would not dare to build a copy because it is just shameful.

    • @endlessjourneytravels

      That is a good way of looking at it. Angkor was built off an earlier version, Beng Mealea. It’s a bit smaller and hard to tell because of the condition of the ruin but the plan and styling was the same. At the time of the construction it’s how they built their temples so it’s not an issue. Modern temples are not built like this at all so it would gather attention just because of that.

      I spent some time watching the craftsman doing the stone carvings. One guy that I talked to said he was carving one piece for 4 months. There was a whole team of stone masons as you can imagine doing this, I’m not sure how many but many for a project this large. I read an article from 2021 that said they have spent 1.2 billion Baht on the temple so far. I have no idea where the money comes from but it generally is donated by the local community. The area around it was farmland so it must come in from farther away. I’ve been to temples before that have a rich benefactor that donates as a way to make merit. This could be the case here but I’m not sure.
      I really enjoyed seeing this temple. It shows we can still make beautiful things instead of everything just being steel and glass towers with no character.
