Couldn't agree with you more, Biz. We need to do so much more than "Thank You For your Service" for the sacrifice they made for us . No vet should be homeless or hungry or in need of medical services for any reason. It is beyond sad that our leaders don't make this a priority.

Really? It's about all wars, the imagins are from the first worĺd war. I live in flanders (belgium) and there are hundreds of graveyards from soldiers. In one battle, in ypres, 25000 troops died in one day and the battle last for about 3 months.

@@wernermampaey5025 Yes it is but the Song was written mainly about the Falklands war as said on many occasions by Mark himself, you are wrong about the images are not just from that war as I could point out the ones that are not one as an example a soldier on a stretcher with his leg missing is the aftermath of the attack at bluff cove where two ships where hit. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the war, Mark Knopfler recorded a new version of the song at Abbey Road Studios to raise funds for British veterans.

@@wernermampaey5025 Hi. You're correct. This song recalls many generations of war. Mark wrote this song whilst watching the Falklands war on television. He wasn't military himself. His father was. He dad made a comment which shook him. He father said that the Argentinians were brothers in arms with the Soviets. Mark somehow didn't know this phrase. I myself understood the phrase early. This song is about the Falklands War, but it's also about every war from the perspective of the soldier who never comes home. My war was Ukraine. My father's war was Iraq. Belgium certainly knows war. Much love to you guys there.

The opening lines refer to the Scottish war of independence in the 1200’s, the border country being where Knopfler grew up. Families in the borders fled to the highlands - this is the battle context for the entire song. It was however inspired by the Falklands conflict in the 1980’s- incredibly powerful piece of music.

This song was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler wrote the song. The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the UK over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claimed rights to. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina tried to reclaim one of the islands. Britain reclaimed their territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict.

Many years ago there was a comedy in the UK called Only Fools and Horses, but in a sombre note a character "Grandad" was recounting to his grandsons and he said " at the end of the war we stood at the docks waiting for the troops to arrive home, when they came off the ship there were men with limbs missing, men blinded and men who's lungs were burned by gas men who'd gone mad with shell shock they (the government) promised them homes fit for hero's all we got were men fit for homes. Thanks for reviewing this beautiful classic song. I love your interpretation and connection to the plight of our vets.
This song though, hits me deepest for a different reason. In January 1989 my Dad died suddenly and completely unexpectedly in front of me. I was 17. We both enjoyed Dire Straits. The following morning I remember waking up and remembering all over again that he was dead. I put Brothers in Arms on my cassette player and listened to it quietly over and over, crying all the time. And to this day I can't listen to this song without being moved to tears. But I like those tears because they connect me to him again, through this beautiful tune. So, thank you again. I love seeing people moved by the extraordinary talent of Mark Knoffler. 🙏

Thank you to everyone who is concerned about Veterans.
I am just one of thousands who work for non-profit organizations serving Veterans in need. My role is to write grants that fund services that help homeless Veterans and their families get stable, safe, and affordable housing. We also assist them with getting occupational job training (like a technical certification program or license such as medical tech or commercial driver's license) as well as pay for work-related costs to get started, like appropriate work clothes, transportation, child care, and tools. Recently, we were awarded a grant to do extensive outreach and provide services to prevent suicide which affects Veterans at an shocking rate.
Somewhere in everyone's community is a group passionate about ensuring Veterans and their families are recognized for their commitment to serving all of us. Theres always a way you can contribute! Our non-profit truly appreciates everyone who helps make a difference, from a business owner or manager who hires a Veteran, a volunteer who assists them to transition back into civilian life, or by making a donation.

This song is about the falklands war.
But you could put it to any war and explains in more than simple words the futality of killing each other over different cultures.

I agree with you to us we were all GREEN; in No-Mans Land there is only us and them; and we all wanted to just get done and go home. Some of the dependency I blame the Government; they were always handing out Codeine and Morphine left and right even when we came home like candy. For example, trouble sleeping here is a 90-day supply of sleeping pills with three refills when you run out come and see us. I have some pain here is huge supply of Percocet and a 90-day profile for light duty. I finally got surgery almost 2 years after returning and the Doctor told me my Meniscus was completely torn in two why did you wait so long to repair it. The Doctor was not happy with Unit Medics; I got to see him because my Unit deployed back to Iraq again and I was left behind due to injury. I had surgery and was medically retired at 21 years. I really didn't want to retire but had to.
