Couldn't agree with you more, Biz. We need to do so much more than "Thank You For your Service" for the sacrifice they made for us . No vet should be homeless or hungry or in need of medical services for any reason. It is beyond sad that our leaders don't make this a priority.
Really? It's about all wars, the imagins are from the first worĺd war. I live in flanders (belgium) and there are hundreds of graveyards from soldiers. In one battle, in ypres, 25000 troops died in one day and the battle last for about 3 months.

The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the UK over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claimed rights to. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina tried to reclaim one of the islands. Britain reclaimed their territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict.
The opening lines actually reference the Scottish war of independence in the 1200’s, Knopfler grew up in the Borders where families fled to the highlands to escape conflict. Inspired by the Falklands yes- the battle context is The Battle of Stirling.

I saw Knofler play a solo show in Indy about 20 years ago. It was at the Murat Theatre. Maybe 2000 fans -- and that audience was surprisingly peppy! It was a fantastic show.

Many years ago there was a comedy in the UK called Only Fools and Horses, but in a sombre note a character "Grandad" was recounting to his grandsons and he said " at the end of the war we stood at the docks waiting for the troops to arrive home, when they came off the ship there were men with limbs missing, men blinded and men who's lungs were burned by gas men who'd gone mad with shell shock they (the government) promised them homes fit for hero's all we got were men fit for homes. Its stuck with me for years.
Mark Knopfler is on my OG guitar list. He has such a unique style of picking and his playing is most certainly distinct. I've always been a big fan of the band. In January 1989 my Dad died suddenly and completely unexpectedly in front of me. I was 17. We both enjoyed Dire Straits. The following morning I remember waking up and remembering all over again that he was dead. I put Brothers in Arms on my cassette player and listened to it quietly over and over, crying all the time. And to this day I can't listen to this song without being moved to tears. But I like those tears because they connect me to him again, through this beautiful tune. So, thank you again. I love seeing people moved by the extraordinary talent of Mark Knoffler. 🙏

The military trains civilians to be soldiers, but when they are demobbed they (and society) doesn't retrain them to be civilians, to deprogram them. It's the same the world over and it's a shame.

This song is about the falklands war. But you could put it to any war and explains in more than simple words the futality of killing each other over different cultures.
I agree with you to us we were all GREEN; in No-Mans Land there is only us and them; and we all wanted to just get done and go home. Some of the dependency I blame the Government; they were always handing out Codeine and Morphine left and right even when we came home like candy. For example, trouble sleeping here is a 90-day supply of sleeping pills with three refills when you run out come and see us. I have some pain here is huge supply of Percocet and a 90-day profile for light duty. I finally got surgery almost 2 years after returning and the Doctor told me my Meniscus was completely torn in two why did you wait so long to repair it. The Doctor was not happy with Unit Medics; I got to see him because my Unit deployed back to Iraq again and I was left behind due to injury. I had surgery and was medically retired at 21 years. I really didn't want to retire but had to.

Calling Elvis was not recorded in France, that was one of the songs recorded in Rotterdam, Netherlands
