  • At the front of a middle school classroom in Oklahoma, a boy named Khosrou (whom everyone calls "Daniel") stands, trying to tell a story. His story. But no one believes a word he says. To them he is a dark-skinned, hairy-armed boy with a big butt whose lunch smells funny; who makes things up and talks about poop too much. But Khosrou's stories, stretching back years, and decades, and centuries, are beautiful, and terrifying, from the moment his family fled Iran in the middle of the night with the secret police moments behind them, back to the sad, cement refugee camps of Italy.

This title has been selected by SFPL as a part of our 2022 Summer Stride program in partnership with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission’s Everybody Reads initiative. Summer Stride is SFPL’s annual summer learning, reading and exploration program for all ages and abilities. The Everybody Reads initiative provides books and literacy support to service providers and caregivers in order to support the efforts of SFUSD and the broader community to interrupt learning loss patterns when students are out of the classroom. The authors and illustrators of the books in this program speak to us about developing a positive identity, becoming aware of others and taking action against injustice.
