- Hello!
I know this video is a bit outside our norm of handheld gaming consoles / small electronics repairs. But, I thought this was a bit of a fun project, and thought it worth it to make a video of it, documenting the repair process necessary to get this thing working again! I built this channel with the idea of repairing all sorts of various things, so this gives us our first chance to expand to something else!
What we have here is a 50", Vizio M50-C1 4K Television. It was listed as having a "broken backlight", but was clearly an issue with a missing LCD display (with the backlight being fully functional and responsive). I troubleshooted all the easy stuff, and even went so far as to ordering what I thought the solution was, to no avail...
The solution to this issue, absolutely blew my mind! Take a look! Наука
Holy cow this totally just worked on my Visio M50- C1!!
I wasn't as precise, just put a small piece of tape on the side showing a blank screen, and had to move it around a cpl times before it worked.
I had the same symptoms, my tape ended up covering the first 10 or so pins on the far right side of the right ribbon plug. But I'm back to a perfect picture now. Thank you so much for posting!! Saved me a lot of money.
I fixed my TV!!! Thank you so much!!!
It was the same screen side too. I used a piece of tape that covered half the pins and it worked and then I keeps making the tape smaller until it worked with a small piece of tape, because the first time it worked but the image quality was bad, but once I made it work with a small piece the quality was normal. I just have a small spot on the bottom right of the TV. Thanks again!
THIS WORKED!!! OMG! This is the craziest repair I have ever seen!
I have had this exact same tv for 7 years now and have had absolutely no issues. It’s been a good set.
The damndest thing. I repair TVs for a living and have NEVER seen or heard of this.Ive scrapped ALOT of Vizios due to "bad LCD panel"-the symptoms were the exact same as yours.I WILL remember this trick. My actual youtube search here was that I have an M60-C3 coming into my shop here, and Im trying to remember if the M-series has those NASTY internal clips like the E-series does that keeps the back from coming off. Thanks for the great tip-John K
Thanks this helped me! My tv is back to normal!!😁😁😁😁
Just did this fix with about half inch of clear packing tape across the pins on the right side of the right t-con cable and I have the full screen back. I don't know why this works but I'm too busy setting up my TV to care right now. Thanks!
I didn't know about the trick to disconnect just 1 cable from the T-Con board. Awesome.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your experience
When I first unplugged a ribbon j got have picture after trying the tape a few times I cannot get back to half screen even when the bad ribbon is disconnected, which doesn't make much sense to me because the good ribbon had stayed put. Any suggestions?
Quick question! Are you removing that wire you are putting the tape on from the "TCON Board"? Just trying to understand where to exactly put the tape?
Any advice will be appreciated!
Wooowww my vizio e701i-a3 has sound and back lights but no picture, I bought a t- con board, replace it but still same... I don't know what to try now!? Any suggestions. Thanks
What do you mean for mask taping the t con board?
FREAKIN AWESOME 👌, Thank You for pointing me in the right direction!! I was 40 videos deep and a day from purchasing a new TV $400 to $700!! For those of you wondering why this works.... there's a short somewhere in the LEDS after the board he replaced (bottom of the TV) as this processes the signal to the LEDS. When connected it shorts out the LEDS on both sides and leaves that blue faint image in the beginning of the video . The scotch tape isolates the shorted connection (two or more signal lines that touch that shouldn't or touch another metal object ) from actually touching. This is also why you have the faint lines after the repair, you have terminated a portion of the signal with the tape. After these cables shown (left and right) the mating part is hardwired (cannot be replaced) internally without purchasing the LED board. The LED board is expensive and negates replacing it as it costs almost as much as a new TV. Keep up the good fight my friends!!
The LED driver board is above, you mean LCD panel driver. This explanation and all the others still sound magic. I'd use kapton tape, cheap tape does the goo thing.
@@echodelta9 That's exactly what I was thinking, (LED? What's he talking about LED, that's got nothing to do with it...OH!!! HE MEANT LCD!!!)
Didn’t expect you to fix this lol glad you did though!
I wasn't sure if I'd be able to either! Glad I did though, as it'll come in handy having a spare!
can you do a video showing the tape process. same tv and today the image looks like double vision
Picked one up from the curb busted screen I just want to use the backlight 120 LED,s! That's bright! This set has 32 areas that light up according to the video in front to create greater dynamic range in brightness. That's what I thought this might have been about. I can't get it to light up, even without the screen. Every TV I hacked will run audio and backlight with the screen in a mess or even sliced off at the bottom.
Hello did you overlap the tape or just laid it on on top of the cable?
Amazing! Before ordering a repair kit I'll try this first. Problem is I need someone to take down my TV lol
Crazy thing is, I bought my TV in 2015. The lifespan is 7 yrs. Exactly 7 yrs later I get a black screen.😳
Wow my Visio M50-C1 is 7 years old and it finally crapped out.
8yrs for me! I did like that TV and the remote....
you mentioned another video? could you link that one? i'm having the same issue but i'm a little confused about where the tape is. should i try replacing any parts?
The bottom of the TV has two tabs that connect into the Tcon board.
You must figure which tab is faulty then cover with tape and remove slither by slither until the picture appears
I really need some help. But I'm trying to fix a Vizio D43-E2 and it's giving me a double screen and I have no idea what is wrong with it. I have bought a new T-Con and it's still giving me the same issue with the double screen. If the tape doesn't work? What do I do next. Please I'm breaking my skull here omg.
This works but be careful with the tcon ribbon cables. They are easy to mess up
Westinghouse has a problem with Ribbon cables. It's what stopped me from purchasing a Westinghouse watching the blogs on RUclips of the defects.
Hi,
So your issue was the TV was too dark, that only with a flashlight you could see the image?
I have this same issue.
So your saying it's not the LEDs but the tcon is bad/needs soldering?
Either one , led or t-con board ribbons. Time consuming but worth the effort if you do it. Take the back cover on , turn tv on, turn off your room lights and see if you can tell if the LEDs in the tv are on, if no lights through the back probably your leds. His issue was with the tcon ribbons, unplug one at a time and see if you get image on one side, if you do yo do the scotch tape trick like he explains in this video.
Can this work with a vizio V505-g9?
I mostly fixed my M50-C1 this evening. The screen went black with only a dime-sized ball in the bottom left corner. Disconnecting ribbon on right (rear perspective) of T-Conn made the right side of screen visible (front perspective). About a half inch of tape over the right side of the right ribbon restored the entire screen, with some caveats. The left side of the screen is brighter in general now. With a mostly white visual or similar, I now see a pulsating, darker, cloudy area at 2/3 left to right from the bottom of screen up to near the middle. This is about 1/5 the width of the screen, but only in the lower half. There are a couple of other cloudy darker areas too now, and darker horizontal striping on the lower right. The dime-sized ball in the bottom left corner is still there as well.
Any suggestions for a full repair? Should I remove more tape, put some back, or move it from the right to the center or left? Does the pulsating mean that it's getting ready to self-destruct?
Thanks for sharing this though.
Hello Michael, I have a d50u-d1 that has EXACTLY the same problems as yours (dime-sized ball in the bottom left corner and a pulsating, darker, cloudy area at 2/3 left to right ) !! The only difference is that the pulsating darker cloudy area cames first (for about a couple of months) and the dime-sized ball after. I will try the tape solution, but I will wait for a complete solution as well ! Peace !
@@samihjr @Samih Daibes I hope that the tape works for you. To be clear, I had nothing but a black screen. After applying the tape I was left with the ball in the bottom left corner and the pulsating spot (likely an LED) in the midst of the cloudy darker area to the lower right. My early indications were lines darting across the very bottom of the screen. Interestingly, the dime sized black ball is doing a "Big Bang" slowly. It is now the size of a quarter, but as it spreads out it allows a view of the picture behind it in places.
I turned off "auto brightness" and "Active LED Zones" to diminish the pulsating effects. I also made some changes to "Backlight", "Brightness", and "Contrast" for the best possible picture considering the present state of things. I also expanded the picture size and that mostly moved the pulsing backlight array LED offscreen. It's still darker and cloudy on the right though.
Good Luck!
I have M50-C1 but mine I got a black screen, the power button turns on bright then fades away and then turns off, no picture or sound. I wonder if my power board is out or the main board?
Probably the backlights need to be replaced.
Explaining what you did with tape would have been good
@Larissa Lavering did you ever find out the problem? Mine is also suffering from this problem
I am having the same problem with my M50-C1, the picture went half screen and then all black screen, did you figure out what the issue was?
@@praveennagpure2132 unfortunately not, i ordered a replacement part that didnt fit and declared the tv dead, very unfortunate :/
I hope this works... gonna try when I get off from work
Did it work? Do you have a similar problem with one of your TVs? Let us know, I'm curious to hear the results!
I have the exact same problem just opposite sides.....when u said to mask the pins you mean completely over the top and underneath???
Yep! First start by taking one of the two Tcon connectors off, and ensuring that it properly shows one half of the screen. Then with the pins connector that you removed, carefully place some scotch tape over the pins on the cable, testing out various bits of width covering various pins. Insert the cable back into the connector and close it, and try powering the TV back on again!
It’s possible too that your Tcon board itself is bad. Have you tested with a replacement board first? If so, and it still does this, then you can try the tape method and see if it works for you! Good luck.
I have this exact TV and covered the very first 4 copper strips on the left bottom tab with tape and it worked. The picture has some very faint horizontal lines but it's hardly noticeable. Wish I understood why that works the way it does
hello i have a simple reason but i seems like logic of information i did check the ic chips are shorted for my so i am looking to see the ic chip but i have a short both side so my first try work partially glad that he is on the web. i am looking in to multi meter for short and try tape and nail polish with a tooth pic. if works will update
My 55" 4k showing images from previous screen
imconfused as to what exactly you did and where you put the tape
The ghosting and blur has been present for a month for me, now it won't display picture at all. The light comes on for a few seconds and then off.
I seen one on facebook posted with no picture for $50. I'm think about grabbing it.
Who the hell would pay $50 bucks for a TV with NO PICTURE???
If i sent you a 2ds with a cracked screen could you fix it or see if it is fixable and if it is fixable. Can you fix it and send it back?
Are you referring to the regular 2DS (pizza slice), or a 2DS XL (clamshell)?
@@TheBrokenPast just a normal blue 2ds (pizza slice)
@@crispy_kidd Yep, I could certainly fix that! Send me an email, and we can discuss details on it. To find my email address, go to the ABOUT tab on this channel (on desktop). There, you should see an email address behind a verification button.
Send me an email, and we can go from there. I'd be happy to repair the screen on your 2DS!
@@TheBrokenPast i will probably email a video in detail of whats rong with the 2ds
What if you can't get the image to show when unhook the ribbon cable?
You cut pieces of the ribbon at the top and tape it
I’m confused about the tape too
What about if half the screen works and other fixes?
Same technique
vizio*
WOW mine just went out!
Hopefully this helps in fixing your TV!
Same😭😭
Can I use clear sticky tape?
On a video D55u-D1
Viseo
Dude spins 14 and a half minutes talking about everything else in life and doesn't even show the actual process of applying the tape
I actually made it to 13:09 and it was there that I finally broke and started to shout Shut-up Shut-up
Shut-up. Afterwards I noticed your comment and knew it wasn’t just me.
Doesn't "fix" anything. Your "fix" disables displaying of a portion of the interlaced display. There is probably a problem with the power supply. A common failure point is the high voltage small caps. When you mask out pins you are not driving the entire display; hence less load on the supply. Likely a high voltage cap is blown...will get back to you!
It's not a bad power supply in this case. It's an issue with a short in the circuitry in the panel itself. In a number of cases when people have fixed their TV by doing this, it exposes a "hot spot" on the panel, usually a piece of cracked glass due to a short in the display itself, rendering it inoperable. In my case, I tried fixing it further to get rid of some of the interlacing issues, and it exposed a hot spot in the same area of the panel as others have had. Fortunately, mine had gone in protect mode before it actually cracked the display itself.
@@TheBrokenPast Can I ask which Circuitry panel is the short in? Mainboard?Power supply board? Thanks.
@@DudeInMaineUSA In the actual display itself. Not in any of the boards, but within the circuitry that drives the pixels themselves. I'm not an expert on exactly how they work, but from what I can gather, there appears to be a defect in the way these specific panels were made. In most cases of similar issues as mine, they discovered that the panel itself actually ended up shorting and overheating and blowing out a small portion of the glass itself. Somehow, by blocking a portion of the pins going from the Tcon to the half of the display itself, it ends up bypassing this shorted area of the display, resulting in a functional (but perhaps slightly degraded) image on the screen.
Of course, I could be completely wrong too on this, but I'm pretty sure it's something along those lines. See a few other instances where others had a similar problem:
