One of my faves from 2023! Join me for an experimental session trying to capture the beauty of reflections from this old, worn-looking boat tied up to an old rusting jetty, an impressionistic loose watercolour painting using the wet in wet method and really simplifying the scene to create suggestions of detail rather than the detail, and focusing on a range of tonal values and foreshortening to create an interesting image.
Materials: Saunders Waterford 140lb/300gsm cold pressed watercolour paper, 11" by 15"/28cms x 38cms. It is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape, today I have created a smaller aperture with masking tape to suit the composition. My board is flat to start with, then at angle of about 45 degrees. I use various brushes as shown in the demo, but use any similar ones you have. My colours today are limited: burnt sienna, prussian blue, cerulean blue, cobalt blue and neutral tint.

Please could you say how long should be allowed for the paper to soak up water before beginning to paint? This is something that baffles me. I do use 100% cotton paper, but never seem to have enough time to get the initial underpainting done before it starts to dry out. I wonder whether others also have the same problem?

It will be different in every studio depending on temperature, humidity, paper type, amount of water added etc. only you can discover this for yourself through trial and error!
