    I remember hearing about this over a decade ago and thinking it was brilliant and never heard about it afterward. I thought perhaps it hadn't been able to be continued. I am so grateful I found this channel because I've thought of this from time to time ever since and been disappointed because it could actually work and I thought it hadn't taken off. I'm so glad to know it did and how successful it's been!!!

      I remember this too! I believe it was called Project Ocean Clean Up then if I’m remembering right lol it’s so awesome to see that he is still at it and his developments are actively making the earth better. It’s refreshing to see how motivated he was then and that he’s kept that motivation all these years. 🙌🏻

    It's just sad to know that it took a single boy with no money and a lot of vision to do this.... rather than a world of governments with agendas, trillions in finances and poor priorities

    • @erratumarchitecture
      @erratumarchitecture 8 лет назад +7

      +Pete Farrow at least someone is doing it, we shouldn't wait for the government to do things, if you wanna change the world don't wait for them because it's never ever be done by a type of government like those.

    • @deluxecapprian983
      @deluxecapprian983 8 лет назад +2

      +Pete Farrow Yes bro ,but the gov. they think only how to take money from you ,they don"t give a shit about normal people with ideas ,they are many like this guy without any opportunity in this planet because of the big corruption,and personal interest in their pockets.

    • @domomo19
      @domomo19 8 лет назад

      +Pete Farrow Sad thing is, us humans have come up with ways to build incredible things such as bridges, ships, planes, internet, sending man to the moon etc - basically anything you can name, things that people before us can only imagine as impossible- and governments are always on the race for the latest innovation and technology to better economy, military, and lives. Yet solutions to clean up the global mess we leave behind and all things sustainability pale in comparison, if not few and far between. Not just top-down, but bottom-up as well. If only people were as driven in putting their creativity/minds to causes such as this, and just be that much more responsible as members of this planet, we wouldn't quite find ourselves in the situation we are now. And we are nowhere near the worse it will eventually become at this point.

    Great, Boyan! It is great will and determination to look and see to it that certain project should have a successful end. I am not an engineer, nor mathematician, nor good in science, but I make sure that I properly throw my garbage if that is one of the things I could make as a contribution to clean the environment. Since it is 'The Ocean Cleanup', I hope that it is not only plastic your project could clean, as well as other waste materials that are being thrown in the oceans such as oil spills, glass, other undiluted materials, other toxic waste, to name a few.
    More success in your project as our world will benefit in the end and praying for your continuous resolve and perseverance. Will share your ideals in the social media.

    It's such a sad thing that a young man have had to devote his whole life to such an "absurd" thing as plastic in the ocean, and the same time very inspiring and uplifting. I was born in - 79 and growing up in this world have been a really depressing affair. It seems like the world is getting immune from the idea of a bright future, because there's so many catastrophe related news. Thank you for giving the children and youth of tomorrow a bit more hope that something can be done.

    Although this invention will not be a hundred per cent solution of this huge nature problem caused by us, the human beings, anyway it can be a first new step in the good direction. I hope that in the future more people will realize that we have to clean up our own trash. I admire people like Boyan Slat very much and for me as an elder, it gives me a lot of hope that there are young people who cares about our very important nature to protect it as much as possible. The young ones have the future and I wish them luck and success with this amazing invention!

    Man crush everyday. 😘😘😘 But on a serious note, this is my life passion as well and its amazing The Ocean Cleanup is doing this. I love the concept, the oceans can move through you. It definitely IS feasible. Never give up. I'm currently studying hydraulics now and plan to clean the Atlantic Ocean for New York's sake. But for now I'm closely paying attention to Boyan Slat and The Ocean Cleanup. I will survey the ocean using the Ocean Cleanup app, anyway I can help.
    I 100% support you and will do whatever I can to make sure we clean up the ocean- our main environment on Earth. ✌&❤ always!!

    İnsanlık tarihi temel olarak yapılamayan, sonra da yapılan şeylerin bir listesidir. Bir buçuk yıl önce, kendi ülkemde Hollanda da, buradaki gibi bir sahneye çıktım. Orada okyanustaki plastik denizini temizleme fikrimin sunumunu yaptım. Konuşmamda dalgıçlık tecrübem ve gördüğümün balıklardan daha çok miktarda plastik ve poşetler olduğunu ve lise dönemi fen projemi anlattım. Bu fikir ile problem üzerinde etütlerimi ve temizleme işinin neden zorlukları olduğunu anlattım. Çok geniş ve hiçbir insanın yaşamadığı bir alanda binlerce kilometre okyanus kıyısında denizde yaşayan planktondan 6 kat daha fazla plastik atık bulunması beni hayrete düşürdü.

  • @busybody1474

    It's hard to clean up pollution once it has occurred, so the best plan is prevention. Several big-picture changes must take place to keep industry in check and encourage sustainable practices:
    Stricter government regulations on industry and manufacturing
    Renewable energy sources so off-shore drilling no longer needed
    Limit agricultural pesticides
    Proper sewage treatment
    Cut down on waste and contain landfills

  • @energyquicksand

    About time for the corporations who made and profited from plastic to pony up some resources to ramp this up and the rest of us should kick in as much as we can to make this happen.

    The entire video goes into the feasibility of the concept however it doesn't talk at all about WHAT the concept really is. I can only guess based on what I saw in the video but there really isn't any explicit information. Looking at the concept art makes me assume that a long boom somehow funnels the garbage to the main structure which then filters out the smaller particles while grabbing the larger ones. How do the booms funnel the garbage? Is that just based on waves?

  • @Caroleeena
    @Caroleeena 9 лет назад +3

    What about the marine life caught up in these booms? I don't understand how they don't get wiped out too.

    • @Rasulis
      @Rasulis 9 лет назад

      ***** He already answered this. There is no netting. How will marine life get caught in a floating cylinder? There is nothing for them to get trapped in without any netting.

    • @catlover172
      @catlover172 9 лет назад +10

      ***** The booms won't create that much a force. It really doesn't take much force to toss around plastic in the water, and that is why booms work fine. Any marine animal that would cause problems to be killed could pretty easily swim away. Also the tower design they are considering probably would affect smaller animals like tiny fish and plankton, but like the video says; their loss won't be significant.
