    As an illustrator, never ever take work for free, to all clients never ask for work for free, and to all creators never accept a gig for free. You can't eat product, you can't pay your bills in exposure. We all need to participate in the normalization of compensation for work in the form of actual money.

Followed very soon with candles as well. My passion is makeup by far. I wanted to be sure I had top tier ingredients before starting. I just didn’t feel right about starting with the usual starting supplies. It took a long time to track down some of the specialty pigments & multichome pigments as well as blend & be creative to make some unique blends. As someone who has worked in private labeling for other industries, there are really good things that private label companies can assist with. They can reduce costs in components, expedite distribution, ensure higher levels of safety (documentation, etc), and have high levels of quality control. For instance, if a facility manufactures for Costco (kirkland brand) they have to meet exceedingly high safety and quality control measures. Every product manufactured in that facility benefits from that level of scrutiny and expertise. I think a lot of people don’t understand the private labeling process and the pros/cons of that system. For some, it could be the right choice. Not all, but certainly some.

    Ok so as someone launching my indie beauty brand I appreciate this bc I have a bone to pick with Etsy makeup brands….if you order products from a lab, you cannot label the products handmade. They almost all do. Please look. You’ll see. So people like myself that do handmade things are put at a comparison that is absolutely not the same & it reflects in reviews when people don’t understand they have bought private label prior and compare to handmade. Handmade is truly made with love. The mixing, the blends, the passion that goes into handmade is incomparable and I have the upmost respect for brands being honest about this. I’m not saying I don’t have appreciation for private label indie brands, I just wish the boom of private label were more honest about this as well as the preorder for private labeling

    I feel like Unearthly Cosmetics in particular is beloved by influencers because they are very good at sending Influencers their new palettes before launch to hype. But their customers who actually pay for the palettes have a very different experience with their orders taking a month to arrive to customers who live in the same country. If a customer complains about this absurd turn around time you are told just to suck it up because they are only a two man show. But it’s like - no that’s not good business. Fix it. Stop making new palette after new palette and focus on improving your turn around time!

    People see the massive profit margins, as private label makeup can be dirt cheap (e.g. $6.00 palette that can be sold for $50.00.) Now everyone has a brand. Many lack a vision, good customer service, and quality products. It's funny when you see the same palette sold by multiple brands who just slap a different sticker on it.
    And customer service varies wildly. I had just had an experience with a brand who ignored a DM I sent on a product I wanted to purchase. At least a week or two later, I commented on a post about it and they chose to delete the comment rather than acknowledge someone WHO IS TRYING TO SPEND MONEY ON THEIR PRODUCTS!

I want to see all the products swatched and be able to view them up close and not having to hunt to find that is so helpful. I have to plan ahead to know which launches I want to purchase and when to log in for the sale. This is even more important to me at holidays when I may be shopping for gifts.

    Completely agree with you regarding the "brand ambassador" bit. People need to demand that they be paid for their work. That is time that you could have spent doing something else, so get paid for it. I used to bartend when I was in my 20s. I've never been a physically attractive person, so I didn't pursue those "brand girl" gigs. However, I always insisted on being paid if some distributor wanted me to wear their t-shirt for whatever thing they were promoting. Nope, I won't wear that for free. I could be wearing something I actually like lol. They'd give me money too even if I am ugly.

    As someone who started as a creator and really found my love for indie makeup in general around the boom of 2017-2019, it makes me so seen to watch content like this. It’s very difficult to navigate with constructive criticism while you are a part the same community that wants to be a brand’s favorite or go to creator because depending on the brand owner’s temperament, you could completely ruin those opportunities or give great ideas that you never see anything from. now that i operate my own humble brand, i try to do everything to make sure my actions as an owner benefits not only my customers but also those who promote or post about their order. There are so many ways a conversation can happen with a brand owner and a creator or possible business contact prior to providing dedicated time or content but because of the power dynamic, people get worried or stressed out by having the conversation. I have come across so many of those who want to get into the makeup scene as a brand owner or creator and have no clue how to do either and there’s really no resource to reference so people can just do whatever willy nilly. As someone also being sued by an indie brand currently, anyone reading through these comments PLEASE vet a brand before you start working with them. Ask other creators, google the brand, look at their socials, reach out to customers. There’s nothing stopping anyone from creating a brand which is amazing but there’s also red flags to be aware of too.

    I get why a lot of indie brands private label - pigments are getting harder to source and this is making it more expensive to purchase materials to create their own formulas. Also, not every indie brand is owned by someone who knows how to make their own formulas. Makeup is chemistry.. However, if the quality is shite than regardless of how much is spent and charged, the customer is losing and they develop a distrust with that company as well as others similar to them. And you’re right, a lot of companies now offer smaller minimum orders like order 100 of a shadow vs 300 of a shadow which is much harder to finance and sell out but the cost might not be much of a savings… shipping is also another issue. There are so many indie companies that are charging $10+ for an item which is very expensive and problematic for the environment, and you’re not necessarily getting a good deal on shipping because if you order more so the customer has to pay more for free/reduced shipping.

    Yesss!! Indie brands have been split in half. There are the private-labeled brands and the handmade brands. I order from both. But I am very keen to know if they are private-labeled or not -- and also to see if there are dupes across other brands, regardless if they are private-labeled. But I am always willing to pay more for better handmade products and I kind of side eye when I see a Private-label brand raising their prices, when othed PL are much cheaper.

This year's release doesn't interest me at all and I won't be picking up any of the four six pans because I don't like the color stories. I'm afraid other people might feel the same way. I think the smaller palettes are to scratch the itch for people that didn’t buy nor intent to buy Gemini, Mariposa, She’s in Parties, or the Blueprint palettes.

      @@DrTaid I like the Mariposa Palette. I find I can use it year round, as most holiday palettes can really lean into “winter colour stories” (I’m a firm believer in wear whatever the hell you want at any time, I just use seasons as a colour story).
      The smaller palettes are $38 and they seem to be colours the brand does well, so maybe they’re testing a new formal on a smaller scale so shoppers like yourself on the fence feel more comfortable testing the waters?
      I do think the brand got lost in the sauce for a bit, but maybe it was growing pains? I totally agree that the market is oversaturated. ColourPop releases so much that we don't have a chance to get excited about any of it before new launch drops, and every palette looks like a slightly difference version of previous palettes. Your point about Cosmic Brushes and their Serenity palette was a perfect example of a brand really taking time to curate and think through a launch, getting consumers hyped about it, and then allowing time after the release to bask in the excitement and restocks.

    Thank you Angie for always bringing insightful content that makes you think. 100% agree with you. Looking at pretty pallets ooing and ahhing over the new things is fun but the reality there are repeats of colors and shades. Makeup has gotten very expensive and not everyone can afford the things they want. I used to get so excited and make calendar appointments for pre orders not anymore unless it's something very unique that will add something to my collection. The personal attacks online between brands is so bad for a brands longevity. People get tired of the adolescents behavior between influencers and brand owners. And no one has time for rude, bad customer service.

    I think the thing that annoys me most about certain Indie Brands is their insistence on using Instagram/social media to keep customers informed instead of posting updates about delays in shipment or restocks or dates when products will drop on their actual website. I'm not on IG & am not interested in having an account there. If I have pre-paid for something & there is a problem, delay, recall or whatever I want to either be notified by email or have the updates posted on the brand's website & not depend on hearing about it second hand by Beauty YT content creators who include brand news/updates in their new release videos. I have lost interest in some Indie Brands for this reason. I think the reason many people are reluctant to purchase Indie Brands until they are available via Ulta, Sephora or some other major retailer is due to the security those retailers give their customers as far as shipping confirmations, ease of exchange or return & protection of personal /payment info plus reward points programs. Bad or non existent customer service is just a non starter in a competitive market.

    How I view indie brands now is kinda like a romantic relationship. When I first got into the indie scene, I wanted to try it all because each brand had its unique charm and draw. But after ‘dating around’ for awhile, I started identifying what I love from indie makeup so I only looked for those and now am loyal and almost like “married” to only a handful of indie brands where I know each release is well thought out with exceptional formulas for my preference. That’s prob why I feel a bit jaded with some of the newer indie brands coming up. Cause it’s starting to feel a bit “been there done that” and the once unique charm of indie brands doesn’t seem there anymore. Not to say I’m not open to trying and supporting new indie brands. But competition is def a lot tougher now and you gotta be releasing some good stuff for me to even consider a purchase haha

    I'm happy that you keep speaking up about getting paid in creative work, it's important for new creators and artists to know that they are supposed to be paid for the work they do. In my opinion the whole "starving artist" mentality needs to disappear. RUclipsrs who do makeup deserve to get paid for their content, illustrators and designers deserve to get compensated for the work that brands monetize from i.e. palettes, promotions or websites just to name a few. Art IS WORK, not just some silly hobby some rich kids can afford to do.
    Skill exchanges and stuff among beginners is fine, but respect peoples' time and money.
    I'm a burlesque performer on the side, and I get messaged on instagram on the regular by brands to be an "ambassador" to them a.k.a. I get 20% if i order from their site and I have to create x amount of posts about their products that I paid for - laughable. It turns me off from buying from a brand that treats creators this way, be that makeup, jewelry or lingerie.

    I've been a creator here on YT since 2010 and it has been an interesting ride when it comes to makeup trends and brands. I feel like right now we most definitely are riding a trend of the indie brand boom, which I love. I love seeing the hustle, the uniqueness, and the creativity that is otherwise lacking in mainstream brands. Most of the RUclipsrs I watch these days focus primarily on indie brands, which I love because I always learn about cool new things. However, the caveat is that with so many new brands and products to try and only one face and limited funds, it makes it hard to pick and choose sometimes. I get overwhelmed by the market saturation at times, but it is what it is. I think there's room for everybody... so long as they appeal to their core audience in some way and fulfill their needs. If that is by being a niche product, so be it. :-)

      Those smaller companies may have damn good products. So why not support them?? Why not let people know that?? Angie has done very well with the indie brands. She gets pr, she gets affiliate codes, and she is not obligated to even review the products, and she’s definitely not required to give a glowing review if the products aren’t up to quality. In this climate it’s actually the opposite for her. If she finds a small good indie brand she’s likely to get more views because we’re all like “wait I’ve never heard of that company before”. And we are all sooooooo sick of mainstream shit shit shit. If Angie turns someone onto a new brand they may subscribe to her channel. I don’t think it’s a detriment to her to review smaller brands. This was very interesting. I am just a customer, and am very frustrated by some of these companies practices. When I order a product from anywhere, I expect it to be in stock and out the door to me within a week. I am an artist, and my inventory is ready to go BEFORE I put it up for sale. When the customer orders I ship same or next day. I do not like waiting months to get my products especially if a company is based in the US where I am. I recently asked for my money back from Shroud cosmetics because I ordered something September 1st and it hasn’t even been fulfilled! These aren’t even pre-orders. When you email asking about your order they get snippy with you. I was told in an email from Klarity cosmetics that she lives in a small town in my same state and they take forever to ship. She said she puts her orders on her porch for the post office to pick up, and they only pick up so much at a time. I also live in a small town and have to mail out artwork to various galleries, sometimes over 70 pieces. I put them in my car and drive up there- no problem. Plus, your makeup is out on a porch and Texas is over 100 degrees in the summer! She could put those orders in her car and drive them up to the post office herself. If these brands want to continue to have customers they need to improve their turn around time for shipments in my opinion. I don’t buy from these brands anymore.

    I don't necessarily mind indies starting to use labs more- a lot of brand owners could use some humbling on their knowledge regarding the actual formulation of makeup. What gets to me is when brands are talking huge game about their formulas and how great their products are... when it's quite obviously the same product every other brand is using. And the biggest absolute no for me is when it doesn't even appear they did the color story themselves!
    I also feel like due to the current climate regarding large companies, a lot of small businesses lean into this image of 'victimization'. I certainly can have sympathy for people who are genuinely putting in the work- making things by hand, directly creating formulas with a lab, putting together cohesive collections. But when brands that are very obviously privately labeled complain about how hard it is to be a small business owner it's so... you are quite literally dropshipping with more steps.
    Oh and all the lipgloss "brands". You are quite literally just putting glitter and flavoring into vaseline and then selling it as if it's a legitimate formula. No one needs another clear gloss that's full of fimo slices and colorant that does nothing.

    I have similar grievances with attempting to access indie brands. However, I feel like a lot of people use their own emotional experience to evaluate business practices and forget that businesses, even those born of passion, ultimately have one goal of they're going to survive - make money. Businesses can't afford to wait around and make a hit if more frequent releases proves more profitable, they're going to have more frequent releases. We don't expect reviewers to do their work for free, but we often expect businesses to run off pure passion.
    Don't get me wrong, I love brands where the passion shows. But I acknowledge there is a difference between what I want and a business needs.

    Whooo, this video. 😂😂😂😂 Yessss, the whole bit about professionalism (with regards to how they treat customers and creators or even other companies). And also the blatant use of IP (usually artwork or characters) they don’t have licenses for. 🎉 petition for indie brands to hire customer support/PR people or at least take a class. A good thing about academia is that it taught me not to be too too precious about my work and I think more people need that.
    I don’t mind a preorder when it’s a complete palette and palettes have been sent in PR. Or for like a second round of pressing. But totally agree with the preorders before the palettes are done; I did it once to support a creator I like but never again.
    There are a lot of brands but I don’t necessarily mind. I like to use palettes independently, so even if formulas are the same, as long as the colour stories for me, ill keep buying.
    Something I really dislike is the inconsistent shipping, especially for international shoppers. Pet peeve when brands don’t say they’re going to ship international last and don’t provide an option for who to ship with.

  • @morganwu282

    I personally feel that you are correct about releasing fewer products. I would prefer small indie brands to work on minimizing processing times and restocking sold out products that there is still high demand for. If it is taking a brand more than 5 days to process, package, and ship out orders I really do feel that is an issue and an issue that should be resolved before new products are released.
    Also, editing to add: it is mean and unnecessary to comment all over the place that you dislike an influencer. I don't think the same rules apply when dealing with a brand - if you purchase a product from a brand and you dislike it, it isn't rude to give your opinion. You are not insulting an individual and I don't think brand owners should consider it a personal attack.

    • @scray00
      @scray00 2 года назад

      5 days?? You don’t think that may be a scooch unrealistic for indie brands. If your talking abh, Natasha denona, urban decay then I absolutely agree. Those companies have made thousands of palettes and they should ship out in 5 days. I do agree that Cust service and accepting constructive criticism gracefully is a must for any thing I buy. I don’t care if it’s a freakin toothbrush.

    • @morganwu282
      @morganwu282 2 года назад +1

      @@scray00 hmm I guess my thought process here was a bit confusing. But I do feel that if the brand is off its feet enough to be releasing new products on a very frequent basis then I do think they should be at a point where they are working to reduce processing times to under a week. That might mean shifting focus to packaging orders over other aspects of the business right after a launch or hiring extra help. I get that this might seem harsh, but if a brand is releasing new product 1-2x a month they should be at that point in their business. In the case of a brand just getting started, I absolutely understand that it will take awhile to get things ironed out. Many indie brands are already doing a wonderful job with processing quickly so I think it can be done. I think it is just a matter of where the brand is putting focus. For me personally, I would rather the brand put focus on getting orders out to existing customers over trying to reel in new customers that they don't have the infrastructure to provide great service to. Again, this is just my personal preference - I am absolutely not in a position to know the ins and outs of running a small company. Hope this makes some kind of sense. 😊

    • @scray00
      @scray00 2 года назад

      @@morganwu282 gotcha and I agree. I think a long standing brand should hire more people and grow in the right ways. Look at devinah. Moved to a different state to get a larger work area and hire more people. They also don’t release limited edition products. They make what they make and they are a permanent part of the stock until they feel it’s time to move on so there’s no fomo for people. I feel this is why some of the indie brands started doing pre orders. It was the easiest way to make all that wanted the product to be able to get it, without the brand losing their shirts on makeup made that won’t sell because interest has died off. I also think we are sooooo lucky in the USA because we do have quicker turn around from companies in the states. It’s one reason I’m so hesitant about international shipping. I will say my lethal order was pretty quick getting to me. But even they have stock at camera ready shipping from the states to cut down on ship times for USA purchasers. And truth be told I don’t think any brand should be releasing even once a month never mind twice. That’s a recipe for disaster in my opinion.

    It's really frustrating to me the culture of silence around problem brands. Creators could let us know specifics about what brands try to get free labor, but no one will say anything. Unless a big company makes an overtly racist or sexist post, it is all hush hush. I don't need a creator to alert me when Hourglass has a piss poor shade selection. I can see that. But they'll talk about that, but stay mum on behind the scenes stuff only creators get to see.

I just got into the makeup scene in 2020, so I didn't have the benefit of experiencing the differences back then and now, but I'm definitely seeing a trend where these makeup indie palettes start to have shades (especially shimmers) that are way too similar. I really love how indie brands bring something very unique to the makeup market, but I have also not been a fan of some brands showing only concept art or some shades of practically still unfinished palettes or other products and then asking ppl to make pre-orders. It's okay if you don't still have full stock of the product ready and I think it's much smarter business if you are a smaller business owner to see how much demand there is for a product, but at least have one unit of the final product ready before asking ppl to make a purchasing decision. There is also always a risk that if you buy an unfinished product than the final product won't match with what was initially promised or worst case scenario the product's release gets cancelled.

    Some indie brands have WONDERFUL customer service! Others, not so much. I never like them to dish their drama for all to see. Lacks professionalism and I just don't have time for all that. As far as some influencers being dishonest? Ohhh yeaaah! If you oay attention, it's easy to spot. Some are just obscenely fake and others and really pushing their viewers to consume. Truth always comes out. When I spot one, I just choose not to follow and move on. Won't purchase products they collab on, etc. We all have a choice. We can all be informed consumers. I think the oversaturation of indie brands will burst and the ones that truly stand out will be the ones left standing when it comes to packaging, color stories, and formula. I do feel badly about the people who may have sunk every penny into their business only to see it fold but the cosmetic industry is so crowded now. You really have to work hard across the board with what I mentioned above and marketing your product ethically across the popular platforms, not trying to "pay" people with PR. Everybody has bills, man. Everybody's time is worth something.

As someone who’s been on the PR list of an indie brand going into it not knowing what to expect or how things actually worked I wish I had videos like this to educate myself & not just about PR but also I think people should know if they’re going to pay £50 or however much they’re paying for a palette to know whether it’s a palette that’s been rearranged & re-labelled or actually handmade? As a smaller RUclipsr myself, it can be so hard to find your audience, and while this isn't something I have personally done myself, I have had a couple of channels smaller than me promote themselves in my comment section. I have no problem with this. Not only do comments add to engagement on my video and push it out to more people, but there's plenty of audience to go around - if some of my subscribers see that comment and go subscribe to them, I see that as a positive.

    Just like people say that everyone should work in the service industry at least once in their life, I believe that working in customer service is greatly beneficial if you own / manage a brand. I had my own candle company (it’s closed now) that I mainly promoted thru IG and I used my prior CS skills to effectively communicate. Be it an issue, delay, etc. It can be hard to take emotions out of an issue, but it’s for the best when it comes to a resolution. The goal is always to turn an unhappy customer into a happy one. It can help to vent those emotions (in private) and then respond once you’ve calmed down.
