    Nice to see my local, Astor, get a shout out from across the country! Warehouse Wines and Spirits, my back-up local and just a block away from Astor, carries a poor-man's Green Chartreuse called Escorial from Germany which does yeoman's work in a pinch.

    I was at an event last night where we tried aqua Vitae, (an Irish brand recreating the old medicinal recipes, with loads of botanicals) and it tasted like a slightly spicier, less sweet version of Green Chartreuse. Definitely going to be trying that out as a substitute if I run out over here!

    Great video Pete! I'd been wanting to compare GC with the Genepy, but hadn't gotten a chance just yet. Sounds like I'm better off supporting the local NYC guys. The one other perk of Strega vs Yellow Chartreuse is the price! When I bought a bottle of Strega a little bit ago it was fully 1/2 the price of a bottle of Chartreuse. $30 vs 60. And that was months before the shortage had really even started being felt like it is now. Cheers bud!

    Elixir, the makers of Ver, have a distribution deal with Total Wine so (as another commenter mentioned) it's pretty widely available, at least in some areas. I don't know if it's in all their locations, but it's certainly in a lot of California ones, along with their interesting Calisaya (would love to hear your thoughts on that, maybe you've tried it in a past video?), and possibly their interesting Iris liqueur (which I quite like).
    For me, in a past comparison, Ver matched your tasting notes and also was just generally less complex and "rounded" than Green Chartreuse when mixed in a cocktail. So it's an alright substitute, but not ideal. I wonder if mixing a sharper/more bold option like Ver with the Genepy would create a more complex, rounded result? 🤔
    Straightaway Cocktails makes the Accompani line of products which includes a green (Flora Green) and yellow (Blue Dorris) that I've also heard mentioned as possible subs, but neither seemed to be any better as a direct sub than any you tested here. I have the Blue Dorris (and not the Flora), and it's more floral and light than Yellow Chartreuse, the latter of which also has much more anise. The search continues!

    • @UnclePete
      @UnclePete  Год назад +2

      Oh good to know about the total wine, I have and like calisaya, but I haven't made a video about it, I find it a little hard to work with, its been on my list to make a video about for a while.
      A Ver/Genepy combo might be a fun thing to try as a substitute, might research required!
      We use the Accompani at work pretty ofterm so far the Mari Gold has been the favorite, I thought of trying the Flora Green for this, but it was getting too complicated, maybe for a later video. I had a littel tour of their facility which was fun, I should probably do a little tasting of those sometime.

      @@UnclePete I picked up a bottle of Flora Green recently and think it's an excellent sub in a Last Word and Chartreuse Swizzle. I find it maybe a touch less sweet than the real thing, but the flavor profile is almost indistinguishable to me.

    Great comparison video, Pete. Love the glassware collection. I always think of Strega and Yellow Chartreuse sort of in their own little category with the latter being a little bit sharper. I'm totally unfamiliar with the Green Chartreuse subs showcased here, but like other commentors, Total Wine does carry Ver here on the East Coast, too, so I might have to give that one a try. The most Green Chartreuse adjacent liqueur I've had is one called Elisir M.P Roux, which is also from France and also has a pretty high ABV at 47%.

    Great vid, Pete!
    Speaking of Astor, they are still out of Green Chartreuse, but their site says “A hand-picked alternative is available on this item's page”: it’s Vicario Monk's Secret Herbal Liqueur (which I’ve never heard of) and includes the following description: “The Chartreuse recipe is a closely guarded secret fully known to only two living monks at any given time. Therefore, finding a substitute is not easy. Vicario's Monk's Secret is made with the mythical elixir in mind, but absolutely stands on its own as a modern interpretation.” 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Even before the commitment to Monky Business, I had resisted either Chartreuse based on the cost, so I've only ever had Genepy. I read someone saying that Genepy was between the profile of the Yellow and the Green. I've used it in drinks calling for Yellow and Green and things have come out OK, but I don't have a comparison and I'm sure they're missing something. In any case, does that characterization seem right to you? Or is Genepy so much its own thing that it doesn't resemble either Yellow or Green that closely?

    • @UnclePete
      @UnclePete  Год назад +1

      Yeah others have mentioned that, I think it is between yellow and green, but a bit more like green. Like green in flavor, but sweeter like yellow.
