Cutting the cord for me was the best thing I’ve done with TV in years. I was on fence about the process but watching your videos helped me a lot. It was a no brainer for me when I realized I only need a streaming service to watch literally 3 channels that my wife watches. All those channels are available in RUclips TV for less than half the price we were paying. Thanks Michael.
If that’s all you watch, you can probably save more. Check out Philo, it’s only $25/month. Use the justwatch site/app to look up your shows. You can probably get Hulu & Discovery+ to cover what you watch.
Are you referring to RCN company out of the Lehigh Valley in PA ? They raised our rates just about every month for a year and then when we cancelled to go back to Comcast, they suddenly had a deal that they now tell us about 2 or 3 times a week in the mail.
SiriusXM does this too. I’ve canceled and re-subscribed to Netflix, both disc-by-mail (still exists, and is useful) & Netflix streaming, never any hassles.
@@jeremyf9124 I call SiriusXM every year and tell them that I won't pay the amount that they want on their new bill! Thanks for the videos Michael! We cut the cord last August and really haven’t looked back. We were paying $125 plus $70 for high speed Internet! That was insane! As of now, we have Fire TV, Netflix, and Disney+ for streaming. We also purchased a $10 Dynex antenna and we pick up all our local stations for free! Cannot complain one bit yet!
I invested in 3 Rokus for my house (had an old one that still works) at 300 dollars(4 rooms), Unlimited internet(106-teenage gamer in house) and Hulu basic , Roku and Disney plus (for kids). I own my own modem and have an antenna. I pay 100 dollars less than any possible Comcast Cable deal. My investment in the Rokus was paid off in 3 months. No retransmission fees or local sports charges and no "local taxes".
One reason you may wish to reconsider subscribing to Dish or DirecTV if you live in the Northeast is inclement weather. You will frequently lose all reception and you have to climb up to the dish to wipe off the sleet and snow.
I agree try streaming before you get rid of cable/satellite, this is what I found out when I did that. I was watching my Roku more than Dish. 16 months since cutting the cord and no regrets. I’m finally paying for a service. I subscribed this month to Peacock. They had a 12 month offer for $19.99. As far as internet speed., definitely try it before you cut the cord. I have DSL and pay for 6mbps but only get 5.5mbps. I have had zero issues streaming on demand and live TV in HD with my Roku’s. We have streamed 2 different TVs at the same time without issues plus 3 people internet surfing. I thought I would have to upgrade my DSL to 12mbps or 24mbps but have not. I have had no issues with the minimum package. As far as Dish/Directv buyouts both are $20 per month for the each months remaining on your contract. So if you sign up then the next day get rid of it your 23 month early termination fee would be $460.
For me money wasn't the main reason why I cut the cord but it was in the top two. I got sick and tired of the hassle of trying to call Xfinity or Verizon every time my bill went up just to get $10 taken off. I would then have to play this game of not signing a contract to that every year I would switch back and forward between Verizon Fios and Xfinity just to keep my cost down. Also, maybe it's just me but it sticks in my craw to be forced into renting equipment. In a typical home where people have between 2 to 4 TVs equipment rental charges alone can add $50 plus to your bill. I honestly will be glad when T-Mobile, Verizon 5G, Space X or Amazon are available to me so that I can ditch cable companies all together.
@Kenyatta Clay It's a game and I too hate it. Amazon is great but it doesn't give you many sports. I want to watch the NHL and I need to find another provider because I don't want to rent my modam so I have to find someone else and I'm limited. Xfinity, Dish are out for me. 😊
The SpaceX system is called Starlink. It’s in a public beta now. T-Mobile and Verizon keep expanding 5G, so check their sites every few months for availability.
I don’t use live tv nor am I into sports, so cutting the cord last year made sense to me and I’m saving a lot of money, other than Netflix I rotate services each month (Hulu, Disney, HBO, so on so forth). I only have two other active services besides Netflix at one time, switch one of the two out the next month, repeat the month after that, and that is my viewing habits.

I finally jumped on the CC bandwagon. I haven't watched much cable tv over the years. After being on hold for an hour, I am now free at last, free at last! I was a Spectrum "legacy customer" and my internet was 24mbps down. After the change, I did a speed test, I am now 300 mbps down. I didn't notice any difference otherwise. My operating system updates will be faster, I'm sure. I have had an antenna up for at least 5 years, so I get the locals that way. Life is good. I don't expect to ever subscribe to any streaming services. I do get lots of ad supported free channels via my Roku.
For those who think that you can't cut the cord because you're under contract with your cable or satellite provider, you might want to look into this a little further, particularly if you have multiple services through them. I cut the cord with Comcast toward the end of June this year. I'd had cable, internet and landline with them. I dropped cable and kept the landline and internet, and I didn't have to pay a termination fee to do so. By the way, it was pretty easy to do, with no hassles. Your mileage may vary, so check with your provider to see if this is a possibility for you.
One thing that I am NOW concerned about is this AT&T/ DISCOVERY deal that was just announced. It may be too early to look for analysis on what this is going to mean to us consumers, because this concerns the merger of the Warner properties AND the Discovery properties, so that kind of information probably isn't available yet. I'm wondering if they will start pulling all of those channels from services like RUclips tv and basically ruin those services for us, forcing us to HAVE TO subscribe to their service to get those channels. We all know that these companies don't give a rip about the consumer, so it looks like MUCH higher prices might be on the horizon. This may be another reason to not cut the cord until we see what the aftermath of this merger is. Please let us know what you hear about this. Thanks Michael
I have a lot of thoughts about this one! (I used to work for CNN/HLN.) But I think you are correct -- it's a little early to say how it will play out for consumers.
@BlackWorm We're just going to have to wait and see, but I don't trust ANY of these corporations, because like I said, none of them give a rip about the customer.
@BlackWorm Yeah, but Warner is as bad as Disney with that nonsense, and I really haven't seen anything about who will be in control. One thing that we will probably be seeing soon is AT&T shutting down their streaming service, so anyone who has them and likes them will probably be out in the cold pretty soon, the way PS View customers were. They have a lot of customers that have the two year contract service, and I'm betting that they get screwed, blued and tattooed. This is probably why they stopped taking new customers on the contract service.
I had problems with Directv several years ago. I changed to DISH for $93. Now its up to $148 per month. Plus, I haven't had ABC since last November. But they continue to raise rates. Minded up!
What people fail to realize is that cable wasn’t that expensive when it was first around much like streaming. As time goes by though, cable rates increased and now streaming is too. Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix have all gone up every year as well as RUclips tv. Eventually streaming will be as expensive or more than cable and then we’re right back where we started.
It's possible, but streaming offers choice. Some people are fine with free streaming services. Yes, RUclips TV and the ones with cable networks will likely continue to rise in price. But many people have no need for cable networks anymore. So I think the competition is a good thing, but it does feel at times "they'll get our money one way or another."
Cord cutters better understand the more people that join their streaming services, the more they are going to raise prices. I'll pay more for what I want and save $ elsewhere..
Have you done a "how-to" set up a house with multiple TVs? That is where I am lost, probably a simple answer. We have 5 and all the cable boxes... Great stuff!
I left Dish a few months ago and just received that offer. From experience that price is for six months and you still pay a lease and service on your Hopper. That slips another $20 or so onto your bill.
Grrr, so frustrating! Then there is the DVR - I RENT that thing, and they want me to pay outrageous fees to repair it? I threw such a fit a few years back, they didn't charge me (likely won't happen again, but if I OWNED the DVR, I can see paying for repairs...NOT renting! *stomp*
I guess I’m one of the few who’s fortunate enough that my condominium complex has an agreement with spectrum where we get the spectrum 200 Mb Internet and 150 channels for $40 a month with no equipment fees and that’s for life otherwise it would be RUclips TV for me.
My wife would probably be better off with the simplicity of Cable if I wasn't here to help her navigate our streaming channels. I love the diversity of streaming and arranging the icons and starting and stopping service when I want.
Our family put an antenna on the roof, because most of our viewing was local channels. For big households watching a mess of different channels, cable TV might pay off.
Some streaming services have a guide like cable. I have Roku but I wish someone would have a remote with a keypad so you could go directly to that channel.
Michael, your advice is great. I am trying to move forward to save money. Before I move forward on cutting cable, I want to return one small cable box in my hobby room. I know I am spending a bundle, because additionally I have NETFLIX and Amazon Prime (not the best streaming service). My bill includes internet and a home phone (??) :) don't ask about the phone. I am beyond the contract period. So, I just bought a Roku Ultra from Costco to add to the hobby TV. I will leave cable on my other TV's for now. Will I be able to do this successfully? My household watches a lot of local news channels and live TV. Will I be able to see he benefits with one TV hooked up to Roku. Additionally, I have to return the modem and router i have, because of course that is an additional fee. However, I don't know which router and modem to buy. I have an Xfinity package and its ridiculous. Your comments and ideas are appreciated.
There is free content with the Roku, so yes. And you can add your Netflix and Amazon Prime logins to that as well. As far as your internet/modem combo, check Xfinity's website for their list and compare prices on Amazon. It's been years since I got one -- but I got a Motorola modem/router (gateway) for around $100. Worked great on Xfinity. I cut the cord years ago as I was finding less and less programing that I was watching. Also over 20 minutes commercials out of every hour. I don't watch sports or news as I mostly watch movies and there are plenty of options for that including RUclips, Amazon Prime and Netflix which is my only sources for watching anything on TV. I do have an outside antenna and I get over 50 channels however just like with cable not to watch that is of interest to me.
So question for the expert, how does one watch the Super Bowl on Sling tv when they don’t carry CBS?Big question is why don’t they?I know what your going to say just pay for paramount plus.
Sling is cheaper because it offers limited locals. Plenty of options with all locals. See this video: ruclips.net/video/kKi-2IbVGjw/видео.htmlsi=B550GIXQD1NdvT4p
I've been considering moving to a streaming service. Initially, it was for the purpose of possibly cutting cost. It became needlessly complicated trying to get the math to work. Then, I discovered that several channels I spend a lit of time watching were not available through the streaming service. Examples included A&E, History, PBS, and Discovery. Finally, the inability to record a specific episode and/or delete one or more individual episodes within any of the major streaming services. Having to install third-party software, at additional cost, to have these functions didn't sit well. All in all, I don't see a compelling need to switch--even though I'll end up having to spend more money.
Here's what we like about cable is the menu and the guide. Amazon fire stick, Apple TV, Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers. Otherwise, it's feels like you're blindfolded and you just pick any random program and waste your time.
We cut the cord years ago, I am not going back to cable or satellite, we have the firestick and roku and we can watch what we like, cable or satellite is just to high.
I am on Dish. I keep loosing channels. I called CS and talked to an Indian man who flat out lied to me when I said I wanted to cancel. I told him my situation, he kept trying to up-sale me. I asked for all my options, only pushed up-sale. Looking at my account while chatting I noticed it was going up $50/mo. I asked him about that and he flat lied telling me it is staying the same due to discounts when the truth was my 2 year deal ended(why I called). Dish CS will always lie even though they keep saying, I am so sorry for your trouble.
Hello Michael. On one of your screens in this video there was a mention of Minneapolis. Are you in Minnesota? Me too. So "hello" from west of Marshall.
Oh really? No, I am not in Minneapolis. But I visited once years ago to produce this report for HLN: ruclips.net/video/TtCUYXxAG1o/видео.html. I enjoyed my time there and even visited the big mall!
Thank you for this information. We are getting our new 65' tv today and I've been trying to decide what services to have. We have AT&T/Direct tv now, but oh my, we are paying WAY to much! 174.00 a month! It's definitely time to make a change. All we care about are the local channels, the national news shows, Fox, CNN and my fav, Hallmark. Also the food and home channels, as well as movies. Our new tv will have apps, that's new for us! There will be a learning curve, so we won't get rid of the satellite yet. I've been watching lots of youtube videos as well as checking out sites like CNET. So much information! Yikes! Again, thanks for this informative video, I'll be watching more of your videos. If you or any of your followers have any suggestions to help me, I would really appreciate it. I was actually thinking about changing to bundle my phone, internet and tv with Ziply...but, I have been on my local neighborhood site ands so many people complain. I absolutely don't know what to do!!
Hallmark is a tricky one. Some services have it and others don't. RUclips TV is my favorite overall service. You could get Frndly TV for the Hallmark Channel as a secondary service. It starts at only $6 a month and includes all 3 Hallmark networks. fuboTV has Hallmark in the base plan, plus everything else on your list. There are free trials for all of these.
@Michael I have Amazon prime and a fire stick on an old tv. My smart tv I still haven't figured it all out yet but I will. AT&T just won't give me a deal on NHL I still don't know what I will do about that either. I'm still watching all your videos on all of this before I actually cut the cord. The thing with AT&T is I still have to rent their modem. Any suggestions on that? Love your content and I just subbed. Thanks again for all your knowledge. Keep them coming because you're helping so many people. You're appreciated. 😊😊
What is the easiest way to incorporate an antenna for local channels? Is there a device that allows you to easily switch between antenna and streaming services without changing TV inputs every time? Particularly for TV’s without internet or app features natively on them that require a device like a fire stick to stream. Thanks
The Air 2 device incorporates locals into the Sling live guide. Tablo also has network connected DVRs so you open the Tablo app on your devices (Roku for example) and can browse locals from its guide. There is a subscription to the enhanced guide that costs $5/month.
I HAVE ANOTHER POSSIBLE REASON WHY *NOT* TO CANCEL CABLE, although it would be great if you have a solution: the inability to scroll using a "channels" remote. My mother cannot understand how to use Firetv, but definitely knows how to change channels. Her neighborhood does not allow satellite OR antenna. Any ideas???????
As someone with an intimate understanding of the cable industry, it is unlikely to pay $60 a month bottom line. This would be an EXCELLENT promotion. After broadcast charges, equipment rentals, and any upgrade charges, you may be paying more. I imagine that price may be your basic starter package with little to no equipment meaning you are purchasing your own devices such as roku, fire stick, or Apple TV. At the same time, traditional cable providers offer an experience which differs from the new cheaper streaming platforms. As you mentioned one of these main benefits is local channels and sports channels. If we are going to pay athletes $100 million dollars to throw a ball, and you enjoy watching them, well that is going to affect your cable bill. Don’t get angry with the provider, the only way they can provide you the channels is by paying the contracts to the networks who carry your favorite teams. Traditional cable providers can offer you a wider array of channels and also often bundle in many premium services at a lower cost than if you purchase them ala cart. Once again if we are going to pay actors $100 million dollars to make a movie, and you want to watch their movies, it’s gonna cost a lot.
You make some good points here, particularly about sports. Nobody is making $100 million movies for cable though. The cable bundle is really about sports, opinion news and locals. The best entertainment programming has moved to streaming.
I used to have RUclips TV that’s the closest to cable I had but now I have Apple TV I get that then some add on channels like AMC plus and paramount plus also I have MAX it’s worth it at least for me
I have a new LG a smartv that I will like to connect an indoor Antenna to. But it won’t take it. Tried the antenna in another tv, no problem. Any suggestions? Thanks
My old cable service prices kept going up and up I was going to cut my cord had Hulu and Amazon prime video called my old company then I found DirectTv streaming more the half I was paying-(still have Hulu Amazon prime and NF) still half my previous cost.
I was going to signup with RUclips tv as they are running a 3 month at $54.99. When I got to the cost screen it said $64.99 after the free trial and I could not find a promo code. Any suggestions?
Have you signed up in the past? That would prevent you from getting the deal. If not, I would try a different device (maybe your phone?) or an incognito web browser!
@@MichaelSaves I have never had RUclips tv and I have tried signing up on three different devices and wind up in the same place. Thanks for your reply.
I was scared and intimidated I'm 71 and my grandson recently moved out and he was my tech person however he did set me up with a fire stick stubbornly I would not cut the cable but they gave me ridiculous price of 144 it's only 10 cable channels guess what I'm going to cut that cord hate Xfinity
Another reason not to cut the cord, poor signal provided by ota stations in your area. I live in a valley area of Colorado, NBC,ABC, fox, cw are all week, CBS pixlates alot , and forget pbs, or sub stations. Strongest are telemundo and court TV saddly.
One thing I will like to ask do I have to pay rental fees. How much am I spending after taxes. But RUclips tv 📺 can fit in your pocket. Because you can take your Roku or Amazon fire stick on vacation with you. And if you you can put a TV in your bathroom 🚽. No stupid cable cords.
I want to cut the cable because I’m paying a lot of money for a lot of channels I never watch. A lot of money going down the drain. The main thing that’s keeping me tied up to the cable is the DVR that I’m renting from them. I use it quite often. Any advice? Thanks.
Live TV services have cloud DVR or you could get a DVR that records over-the-air. On-demand services are basically DVR --e everything on-demand. Lots of options, but depends what you record
I find this all very overwhelming. I'm a simple person. I only watch a few certain channels on tv using Optimum. But it's gotten too expensive. Can anyone simplify this for me? What would you choose to switch?
Check out my Streaming TV 101 playlist. You can go to Sling TV’s website and enter your channels into its Service Optimizer tool. If it’s only a few, one of Sling TV’s $35 plans will work. Also go to MichaelSaves.com. Under cut the cord, I have lots of resources for beginners.
i am SO with you on that one! I'm fed up with paying Dish $95/mo when I watch about 1/3 of the channels on the "pick and choose" basic pkg, ugh! I'm already thinking I can kick Dish to the curb with Michael's videos...we can do this! LOL :)
Check out Philo also. It’s a great value & doesn’t get enough attention. A fireTV stick is a good choice for Amazon customers, especially if you have Prime. If you like Apple, an AppleTV box is a good choice.
I’m going somewhere where can’t get cable…. Also paying $163 ….. yuck. Also I heard Dish will double the second year and you have to have great credit plus the contract crap
Also, streaming has content you can’t get on cable. That’s going to increase as people leave cable more over time. Disney channels are disappearing in the UK. Eventually cable will just carry the Internet. Sports will be live streamed and everything else will be on-demand streaming.
Cable isn't worth it unless you are retired and have time to browse 150 channels daily. You're basically helping the celebrity industry get paid for something you barely use. How are we benefiting from it if we are at work 8hrs a day?
Thanks for watching today's video! I still believe that cutting the cable TV cord makes sense for most people, but there are some exceptions. If you're getting a great pay TV deal, leave a comment below and share the details.

Yes, I should have mentioned that in the video. If you keep your internet, you can drop the cable and face no penalty in some cases.
@Eddy Edwards Yeah, I'd love to, but hubby is old school. If it were left up to me, I would drop it.
AT&T lies.
@@jhock24 well when they do go up u can always go back to cable....and there will always be someone's service that work for you
Have you done a "how-to" set up a house with multiple TVs?
CEO: ((This did not give me the information I needed, I am satisfied with Cable and godamn RUclips won't tell me the best cable networks))
Our family put an antenna on the roof, because most of our viewing was local channels. For big households watching a mess of different channels, cable TV might pay off.
Some streaming services have a guide like cable. I have Roku but I wish someone would have a remote with a keypad so you could go directly to that channel.
DIRECTV via Internet has that with its Gemini device.
Here is my old video that gives you a glimpse into what you're getting yourself into: ruclips.net/video/57McAzYt874/видео.html. Also check out my cord-cutting guide for beginners and lots of the videos on this channel will help you! michaelsaves.com/streaming/how-to-cut-the-cord/
Amazon fire stick, Apple TV,
Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers. Otherwise, it's feels like you're blindfolded and you just pick any random program and waste your time.
We cut the cord years ago, I am not going back to cable or satellite, we have the firestick and roku and we can watch what we like, cable or satellite is just to high.
Good info, thanks.
My smart tv I still
haven't figured it all out yet but I will. AT&T just won't give me a deal on NHL
I still don't know what I will do about that either. I'm still watching all your videos
on all of this before I actually cut the cord. The thing with AT&T is I still have
to rent their modem. Any suggestions on that? Love your content and I just subbed.
Thanks again for all your knowledge. Keep them coming because you're helping
so many people. You're appreciated. 😊😊
For sports take a look at Fubo. It may or may or may not be a good option for you.
@@RobHoffman83 I do have it but I haven't used it yet. Thank you for
commenting. I do appreciate your taking the time to answer me. 😊
No matter what you, they'll get you every time.
DIRECTV via Internet has a device they send you with a number pad and channel numbers.
Thanks
Sorry I don't have a solution. Maybe you could contact LG support.
My old cable service prices kept going up and up I was going to cut my cord had Hulu and Amazon prime video called my old company then I found DirectTv streaming more the half I was paying-(still have Hulu Amazon prime and NF) still half my previous cost.
I like college football and Spectrum's conflict with Disney has resulted in my losing some channels I watch. I have to have ESPN.
Agree w all your points. 👍
I have a cable box from xfinity. Now I see that I don't need it. I can stream from free streaming service. How do I get started?
Good video thank you .
My cable company is owned by the local power company. Most streaming services are the same or more than I pay for cable.
Im getting ready to cut the cord, just get internet from verizon. i bought a wi fi router. Do I install router first before i make the change?
You will install the router with your new internet service. If you're staying with the same internet provider, you can install it anytime!
My sister is such a penny pincher that she always chooses the world's slowest internet speed from our local internet provider in order to save money.
Oh no
I was going to signup with RUclips tv as they are running a 3 month at $54.99.
@@phylliswhitt2124 I think the 3 month discount occurs automatically without a code.
Do you have any pointers for people with rv’s that don’t want dish tv hi hi is like wireless cable
I don't have a great solution. I do know some people get by with Visible's unlimited data plan -- because it has mobile hotspot (capped at 5 Mbps).
Is dish gonna raise his price next year? Good luck with that.
A TV for every occasion. 🦨🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@MichaelSaves Anyway to transfer what's on one DVR (Diretv) to a new one?
@@TT-de7wb Not that I'm aware of since they're cloud DVRs.
LOL :)
@@MichaelSaves Thank you. I appreciate it!!
Check out Philo also. It’s a great value & doesn’t get enough attention. A fireTV stick is a good choice for Amazon customers, especially if you have Prime. If you like Apple, an AppleTV box is a good choice.
i just switched back to cable.
My biggest gripe with streaming is the complete and utter lack of hi def.
I stream stuff in 4k
Once ESPN is available online without a cable provider, the cord cutting will be in full swing.
The only thing I’m concerned about is throttle back of my internet speed and getting buffering.
I like baseball and hockey and golf so i wil have cable tv
hello dude
I can take RUclips TV with me when I go on vacation and can't do that with cable.
I’m happy with xfinity, but not $239 per month.
Not only did i cut the cord. I ripped it out of the wall and threw it across the street.
What person thinks 🤔 paying 70 dollar a month for cable or any streaming service is a good idea 💡 .
hello your looking good
Cable isn't worth it unless you are retired and have time to browse 150 channels daily. You're basically helping the celebrity industry get paid for something you barely use. How are we benefiting from it if we are at work 8hrs a day?
B.S.!
