Watching this I didn't feel Aretha treated Big Mama with respect. She drowned her out volumewise and Willie Mae really didn't have much chance to display her talent. I was hoping to hear the 2 of them shine but that wasn't the case. It may have been due to Thornton's age, I can't say.
Bessie May Thornton had a cry in her voice that just guts me. Aretha takes me soaring. Both of them so real, so serious, so sad and uplifting at the same time like the blues should be. I'm just listening to this again and again.
Just wish people cared enough to make sure she was loved enough and taken care of when she was down on her luck. Celebrity so- called " friends" knew that she didnt have royalty $$$$$ OR a decent place to live and yet no one seemed to care enough to make a change. Rest in Peace Queen Big Mama Thornton ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Anyone attempting a duet with Miss Aretha might as well have taken a seat. What a voice. Even illness did not prevent Big Mama from giving it her all. Aretha was such a gracious and respectful artist. The last of a dying breed. Wonderful.
Love how Aretha took her Que from Big Mama when she pointed to her Chest ❤ she was having a Problems you could tell by her Breathing Aretha seeing it just took off with the Song until Big Mama could Catch her Breath and Continue the Performances true Professional She knowing how sick Big Mama was but wanted to do this with a true Trooper who wasn't going to let a Bad Heart keep her from Doing this Last Live Performance before her Death RIP TO THE BOTH OF THESE PRECIOUS SOUL MUSIC QUEEN'S.
Whoa!! This is makin me tear up, this is so beautiful w 2 most dynamite and beloved Blues - R n B Queens , seein Big Momma Thornton and Aretha Franklin perform together. This is a treasure ❤❤❤Raw and real the way blues is meant to be. They are both in heaven now… What a Choir there must be up there in Heaven 🪽🪽🪽 Thanku ladies. ❤❤❤❤
Two Queens for sure. I saw Big Mama Thornton & she asked my age, I told her 16 & she told be I was just a baby, that she was 66, her band rocked so hard, what a wonderful night that was at UCR.
Damn Aretha is so beautiful in her day like 😍❤️ and Big Mama is just amazingly beautiful in and out. These 2 are voices from heaven. R.I.P Queens. Black women, this is who you should be looking up to for inspiration as a woman. Not what's out right now.
2 game changers...they took popular music in a different direction, from where it was before they showed up on the scene. Thats a REAL legend..when you make the industry better because of the sheer force of your own talent.
WOW...What a treat! To see these two legends, who are decades apart in age...but so connected in culture, kindred spirit, musical genre and history...was simply awesome!👏👏👏
I know it was impressive toBig Moma to sing with someone that her & her fellow trailblazers like Mahalia, Clara, Bessie, Dinah, Ella, & Sister Rosetta helped to literally CREATE! Without those ladies we wouldn’t have the QUEEN!
Wonderful! Two superb talents. Big Mama Thornton was an absolute force of nature, a powerful & emotive vocalist and defining songwriter. And Aretha…was simply Aretha: a transcendent and stratospheric once-in-a-century talent. I also applaud Aretha for taking the lead when Big Mama was clearly not feeling well. There’s a point where Big Mama stops singing & points to her chest repeatedly, and touches/grabs at the left side of her chest throughout. She had suffered from heart, lung, and liver disorders and was in ill health at this time; she died four years later. Aretha knew this, and lead the song to give it the characteristic flair that Big Mama would have been able to bring to it had she been well. A classy move by Aretha, and a wonderful time-capsule moment where we see two superb talents meet and make great music.
Thanks for keeping this video posted; it's an absolute CLASSIC video to see these two legends duet together! By the way, Aretha's voice was OUTSTANDING and ON RAGING FIRE!!!
Thanks SOOOOO much for posting this! I didn't know this existed, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the heading!!! RIP Queens Big Mama & Aretha-makes me even prouder of my heritage.
Aretha's vocal coach, Leola Carter, used to give a free weekly class for guys from Harlem, which I got to take because of a mutual friend even though I'm white and was a dancer more than a singer. Leola was German born, half black and half white, and had studied at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music. She became the vocal coach for Columbia Records. She was an amazing character, very black and very beautiful.
I always admired how even in all of her glory, Aretha always respected the elders that came before her.
I hear Ree Ree's name and I think of Respect.
I hear the word respect
And I think of MS.Franklin's voice!
@@intuneorange love this comment ❤️❤️. And so true.

Rest in peace to the queens
Glad we have this recorded for history and for the future.
This. is. precious. Never knew it existed. So glad Miss Aretha lifted her up like that.
Big Mama Thornton did not need lifting up.
Respect goes both ways.
you think she lifted her up? more like sang over her
Just wish people cared enough to make sure she was loved enough and taken care of when she was down on her luck. Celebrity so- called " friends" knew that she didnt have royalty $$$$$ OR a decent place to live and yet no one seemed to care enough to make a change.

What would America be without this music?
Bored. 😁😆. This music is timeless.

Big Mama died at 57 years old
This is the blues! BMT and AF should have made a duet blues album!

Big Mama Thornton Had Lost A Lot Of Weight By This Time, But She Still Found The Strength To Do This Performance With Aretha! God Bless Them! 😇

I know it was impressive toBig Moma to sing with someone that her & her fellow trailblazers like Mahalia, Clara, Bessie, Dinah, Ella, & Sister Rosetta helped to literally CREATE! Without those ladies we wouldn’t have the QUEEN!
This is classic. Loved to see the Queen pay homage to Mama Thornton. Two icons, may they R.I.P.

She even spoke so soulfully.
This is dope as hell first of all the queen and then you got big mama Thornton who didn't get the recognition she deserve but still kept moving
This is EPIC! I didn’t even know that this pairing existed. And Aretha’s vocals - so pure and sweet and strong.
