South Bend, Indiana, Highly regarded Catholic college. Very popular, although their football team has struggled lately. Mascot is the Irish Lucky Leprechaun. Beautiful campus. Watch the movie RUDY!!!
They need to do an entire video like this of all the great animal mascots. The bison you saw is Ralphie. They always use a female bison, cause males are just two damn big and moody, but she's still nearly 1000 pounds and can run 25 mph. The Texas Longhorns have a full grown steer named Bevo. Of course there is Georgia's Bulldog UGA, and one of my favorites is Auburn's War Eagle. They release an Eagle at the top of the stadium and the crowd keeps a chant going as long as the Eagle decides to circle, eventually flying to its handler on the field.
I can't wait for fall .... cooler temps, FOOTBALL and boiled peanuts!!! In America, Friday nights are for high school football, Saturdays are for college football and Sunday is when the Pros play so weekends really mean something in the fall/winter!!!! Highway Patrolmen with the highest rankings get to "guard" the coaches! What an honor! Notre Dame is the Fighting Irish! Your mind would be TOTALLY blown if you knew how much all of that stuff costs! It's paid for by tickets, vendors and alumni with deep pockets!
I was a trumpet in The Band of the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame. :) very proud alumna. (And, yes, tá Gaeilge agam!) Glad you've covered all of this!!! I loved trotting out of that tunnel all those times.
Washington Huskie, LSU Tigers, Penn State Nittany Luons, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Colorado Buffaloes, Texas Longhorns, and (My Favorite) Florida Gators was all mentioned
Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame, wake up the echoes cheering her name, send a volley cheer on high, shake down the thunder from the sky, what though the odds be great or small, Old Notre Dame will win over all, while her loyal sons and daughters march on to victory!... 😄 #LetsGoIrish🍀🏈
@@LSFA-KrissyL16 I was momentarily confused by the last line of lyrics, because in 2022 they were changed from “While her loyal sons are marching onward to victory.”
@JPMadden LOL dangit! I keep forgetting that! All of my fam members who went there graduated at least 30 years ago and I haven't made it out to a game in a few years, so I'm still stuck in an ND time warp. 75% of the games I've seen live at the stadium were Lou Holtz era LOL. Matter of fact, wasn't it somewhere around summer they announced that? So, looks like I've spaced off that detail for 2 years now LOL.
@@LSFA-KrissyL16 You did write the correct lyrics. I attended one game in 1992 or 1993 when my brother was a student and in the marching band. That's why I know the old lyrics.
If you want to know who the Irish are, watch the movie Rudy. This will give a bit of history. The Irish are the fighting Irish for the University of Notre Dame.
Yes, mascots are a big part of the identity and brand of universities in the United States. They range from the classic animal mascots like the Louisiana State University Tigers or the University of Oregon Ducks to cultural touchstones, groups, or tribes like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or the Florida State Seminoles to oddly location-specific ones like the Ohio State Buckeyes, where the trees are so common they are named the state tree of the state of Ohio. In fact, most mascots were chosen for their connection with the history or culture of the area the school is in, so feel free to ask why a university has selected it! There is often a fascinating story behind it. Schools with animal mascots often have living ones they showcase at games and events, with examples including the University of Colorado Buffaloes, The University of Georgia Bulldogs, and the University of Washington Huskies, among many others. It is often considered a high honor to be given the responsibility for the care of these animal mascots, which are usually quite pampered.

"The most generally accepted explanation is that the press coined the nickname "The Irish" as a characterization of Notre Dame athletic teams, their never-say-die fighting spirit and the Irish qualities of grit, determination and tenacity."
The Irish, as many have probably said by now, are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, of the University of Notre Dame of South Bend, Indiana. Which produced such graduates as Joe Montana, Golden Tate, recent signee for my Bills Chase Claypool, and my dad. (For clarification, my dad was not _on_ the football team, but he claims he had a drink with Joe Montana in my dad's last year in South Bend. My mom also claims she helped Joe find his books his freshman year while she was working in the bookstore. The math works out for both but I tended to believe my mom's story more.) The order of priests that founded the school were actually originally French but somehow, a combination of a large trend of Irish-American players early on and an Irish-American school president at one time who was a veteran of the Fighting 69th regiment of the US Army caused the nickname to stick. Eventually. But the primary colors of the school are gold for the Golden Dome atop the main building of the school and, officially, Madonna blue for the Virgin Mary (even though the uniforms tend to be navy blue instead). However... nearly every year they play at least one football game and a few basketball games in green and gold instead. (Oftentimes it's the game _against_ Navy, but not always. That drives me nuts since, yeah, the Naval Academy's team colors are, as you may well expect, _navy_ blue and gold and so is their alma mater!)
Go IRISH! Fighting Irish Of Notre Dame , Indiana! Real Gold is used in the paint on helmets. The Movie “RUDY” is a true story about a guy making into the school and onto the football team at Notre Dame. Go Irish!
Occasionally I make a joke about one part about the movie, which, because it's a true story (and what follows probably would never NOT happen in any fictionalized account, for that matter), I don't consider a spoiler -- but since not everyone will agree lemme put an extra space in so people can more easily ignore it if they so choose: I think that moment when Rudy's dad reads the acceptance letter, Rudy says "I'm in", and his dad says. "My son's going to Notre Dame." Then with more emotion, "My _son's_ going to Notre Dame." Then he gets on the PA and shouts it, "MY SON'S GOING TO NOTRE DAME!" while just about all the other workers cheer? THAT'S the climax of the movie. You could hit stop on the VCR or DVD right then and there. Oh and my mom and dad were at that final game. Sadly my dad doesn't remember it and my mom worked in the bookstore so she had to leave early. They both have Joe Montana stories, for what it's worth.
