      You should pay for expensive apple storage, the fact that you own apple products at all is a commitment to spend as much as possible on apple products. You should never try to find alternatives without apple's expressed permission. You owe apple your complete loyalty and fidelity as long as you live. You should also make apple the sole beneficiary to all your assets and real property in your will. You are nothing without apple products. You should be grateful that you are allowed to spend all your money on them. Don't be so ungrateful!

Having your super important files on at least 3 locations where at least one is off premise ensures you don't lose data that was one of a kind.

    A NAS is great, but always remember...If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies. A NAS protects you against drive failure, but does NOT protect against NAS failure. Your house could be burgled, or burn down, etc. Or the NAS itself can fail (It does happen). So, it does not eliminate the need for cloud storage, or at least a SECOND NAS offsite at another location!

      @@PatrickRambles Then, I fear, I would not buy it. PCs running Linux would make a much more practical NAS. Or FreeNAS.. One of our offices fell into that trap recently, when the office NAS died, taking with it a great deal of crucial data. They didn't have another copy, thinking that if it was on the NAS, it was "safe." I spent many hours trying to recover the data, got some of it, but unfortunately, the NAS took a couple of crucial folders with it when it died. Bye-bye. A NAS needs backup too.

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  8 месяцев назад

      100% a NAS needs backup. And yes there are much more open options like building your own. I think this NAS is built for people who want the benefits of a NAS but don’t want to dive deep into it. It’s almost plug and play.

    • @NathanGregoryAuthor
      @NathanGregoryAuthor 8 месяцев назад

      @@PatrickRambles Agreed, and there is a place for it. But what bothers me about this is these inexpensive standalone NAS systems create a trap that unwary, or unknowledgeable users can fall into all too easily, thinking that if they have a NAS, they are safe, or that a NAS is a replacement for cloud storage. The very title of this video propagates that idea, and that is simply false. A single NAS is NOT a replacement for cloud storage. You need multiple NAS, cloud storage or some other means to backup the NAS. That's my objection, my point, that the video propagates a false sense of security, implying that a single local NAS is a viable alternative to an off-site storage system of some type. It isn't, and by definition, cannot be. I have a NAS, and I use it. But I also have cloud storage, and, frankly, quite a lot of it. The cloud storage backs up my NAS, and my NAS backs up the cloud storage. Yes, your cloud storage needs a backup too! Just because you have iCloud, or G-Drive, or OneDrive does not mean you are safe. While rare, cloud storage does fail too. Simple human error can cause loss of data stored "safely" in the cloud. If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies.

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  8 месяцев назад

      @NathanGregoryAuthor I don’t really see how my title propagates this. I compare NAS storage to internal Mac storage, not cloud storage. It goes without saying that important files need more than one backup.

    For truly professional workloads, the lackluster storage is a bit more defensible as external and networked storage options exist are are getting cheaper year over year... I have like 470 gigs of my one terabyte space on OneDrive used up, and 90% of that is photos and videos from my camera and phone. Turns out, games aside, 1 terabyte is kinda hard to fill unless you have a TON of high-quality video content, either as your own production or a media library of lossless Blu-Ray rips.
