  • I remove the ZF 5HP24 automatic trans from the 4.2L Audi block and begin stripping off all components till we're left with a long block. This includes the process of finding TDC, removing exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, wiring harness, all coolant lines, the power steering pump, the oil filter housing and oil cooler, and the entire timing belt system on the front of the engine.

    Just found the channel, i own a VW/Audi shop in BC and may be picking up a D2 shortly. Hope there is more content coming. Sometimes the service manual is wrong so it led you astray a couple times but good on ya for persevering.

      Thanks for stopping in Jason. You're right, there are minor things in the service manuals I've found so far that have been a little off from reality while tearing down the block. Still having a blast taking things apart (and not facing the music of real build costs yet :D).

    Great video, great series! I have 3 Audis, 2x 1.8 and one 2.8. Having worked on the small 1,8 and the larger 2.8 what I see here does not frighten me any more. The big V8 is just like the 2.8 or 2x the smaller 1.8. I also have the special tools and all in all it's a great motor to work on, no rocket sience requierd. I was really surprised how rusted up your engine and axels were. I live in Germany, Bavaria, and we also have snow in the winter but I guess you beat us on the that by miles... Keep up the good work, I will follow with great intrest.
    thanks
    Uwe

      @@FigureItAudi I love this car! I only had it for a little more than a year now. Although I live in Boston, the winter this year was a disappointment (You know what I mean :) ). I've been doing some small work on the car here and there. Both mechanical and cosmetics. Valve cover gaskets, sparks and coils, restored headlights, etc. Replacing some missing or broken plastic and rubber bits sourced from ebay or facebook market from parts out cars. Some from Europe Audi Tradition. The only "mods" on the car: 20" summer wheels, custom exhaust, modern ignition coils, lowered springs with Bilstein shocks and aftermarket radio (all was made by previous owner). I'm trying to keep it as original as possible, but parts are a big issue.

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi  Год назад

      Hi Tommy - Yeah, unless I come across some critical issue that would make the block unusable, the intention is to fully rebuild the bottom end and heads while making minor improvements.

    First, I really enjoy watching your videos... question, if you're sending the engine out for machine work why both trying to preserve TDC?

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi  Год назад

      Hi Paul, thanks for watching. The effort to find TDC is more to protect the components when more things start coming apart. The bolt holding the timing gear to the front of the crank is torqued to over 200ftlbs and if the crank wasn't pinned, I wouldn't be able to break it free (that will be next episode). That and, I didn't need to accidentally send valves slamming into piston faces if I foolishly rolled over a cam when playing with the exhaust cam sprockets. And it's fun?

    Thx for all the honest perspective ... i have a 2002 D2 S8 black-on-black that is down for the count right now with some trans issues. Won't activate in reverse and doesnt turn over since that started happening. You mentioned the shift assembly during your break down video and i am wondering if you think there is something mechanical keeping it from turning over because it thinks it is in-gear or Neutral?

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi  9 месяцев назад

      Hey, thanks for watching. "I don't know" is my real answer but I'll add 2 things. One is that the electronically controlled switch is splined to the gear it's on and at 280k kms, mine didn't look worn at all, so I don't think it can fail that way. But also, the trans oil cooler lines (which leak) are directly in front of that switch and my entire connector, harness and the switch itself was beyond caked in grease, read: high probably there could be an electrical issue. I guess the good news is you just be able to see some of this stuff from under the car if it's up on stands.
