  • Today, I’m going to tell you the story of a car that was a good and highly-capable competitor of BMW 7-series and Mercedes Benz W140 - Audi S8.
This was a performance version of a revolutionary Audi A8 - the car that brought Audi (and Volkswagen Group) a place at the table of “big boys” in the world of luxury executive sedans.
This was the first mass-production large performance sedan with a body fully made of aluminum.
This car could make you the fastest one on a curvy winter road and make you feel at a high-end luxury resort at the same time.
It was a very comfortable and friendly to drivers car with many luxury options and it was bloody fast even by today’s standards.
I was an inch close to buying one for myself ones but it didn’t happen, unfortunately.
P.S. I hope you’ve got a joke about a mythical BMW M7, a car that was wanted by customers for decades but never was built (yet). :)

Hello there, I'm a german engineer and now own my 86th car and my 11th A8 D2. It's a 2001 3.7 quattro tiptronic in dark blue/black leather, a 4 seater with 2 full electric rear seats. Audi assembles the A8 in Neckarsulm, it's 36 miles from where I life (the Porsche production Stuttgart Zuffenhausen is 3 miles away). In the last 25 years I had 2 W12 quattro with 420 hp, 1 S8 quattro from 2001 with 360 hp, 1 2.8 quattro with 193 hp and the rest were 4.2 quattros with 300 hp. The thing is, the S8 with 6-gear-box is fast indeed - on the paper - but a normal driver can hardly reach the 5.4 sec to 60 in real life with a clutch and a manual transmission. In the W12 tiptronic though you only have to put down your right foot fast and you get the 5.6 sec easily ... and again ... and again. I deactivated the speed limiter, so I drove 193 mph once on a saturday morning at 2:30 a.m. Oh man, the german Autobahn A5 from Freiburg to Karlsruhe got suddenly very curvy. In my Porsche 944S2 the Autobahn A5 is relatively straight at its topspeed of 150 mph. My Audi RS6 was limited to 163 mph (like all Audi RS models are) so on the Autobahn you can drive away from all the other Audi, Mercedes and BMW which are limited strictly to 155 mph (but nobody in Germany knows that officially). In all this time I owned so many cars and sold them,in 2020 I ultimately got back to this 3.7 D2 because it is a technical milestone with its smooth high tech 40 valve V8, the tiptronic transmission, the permanent 4 wheel drive... (which you need not only in the winter, but on every day with wet streets) and certainly the "Aluminum Space Frame" high stiffness body... it's one of the safest cars on this planet - and it will never look old because of its timeless and complacent design!!!!

I've owned my 1997 S8 for 11 years and it never gets boring. I think this is due to the way it delivers the power. It's only 40 BHP more than the 4.2 A8 but it's a completely different driving experience. The A8 accelerates very smoothly, but the S8 surges forward with such ferocious power and just keeps accelerating.
I used to be a mechanic and carry out my own maintenance, but due to back and hip problems I can no longer do it so a friend of mine who owns a garage is now carrying out some work for me.
I decided to get as much done as my money would allow. The car is having 4 new springs, 4 new shock absorbers, all new suspension arms, 4 new brake discs, 4 new brake calipers, new brake pads all round, 2 new handbrake cables, a new serpentine belt, new cambelt, new water pump, new thermostat and all new idlers, tensioners and pulleys. I can just about handle the spark plugs, oil, and new filters myself.
It's been very costly just buying the parts (I got them from Autodoc in Germany) but the labour for the work isn't costing too much as my friend is fitting it in around other jobs.
The car also has a full length Milltek stainless steel exhaust which sounds beautiful without being intrusive.
I would thoroughly recommend getting an S8 D2, they look amazing and go like a rocket.
Thank you for an excellent video, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

@@wurstmotors It’s honestly amazing. The sound and feeling of the 4.2 is so good and the handling is unreal for such a big car. It is one of the few cars I can either take to limerock and do some laps in for fun, or just take a slow midnight cruise down the west side highway. Only complaint I have is that maintenance is a nightmare sometimes
