you... you didn't... have to finish every bottle...
SAGE YOU SHOULD KNOW BY NOW THAT WHEN I COMMIT TO SOMETHING I FINISH IT
@@patrickhwillems Is that FILM CRIT HULK's spirit possesing Patrick's body? Sounds like a great idea for the episode of your show! (And I just butchered english language by this comment, most likely)
@@GrumpyReaper2525 That's a collaboration I long for.
And OOOOOOH, I know what the collaboration should be! A Blue Flame Special on cinematography in action scenes!
Cos seriously, one thing we don't talk about enough is how good cinematography can elevate a scene. Thinking of The Last Jedi in particular, but even films like The Raid, which already have brilliant martial artists, benefit from really good camera work.
@@patrickhwillems Unless they are duplicate bottles.
"how do you know?" -- Hemingway
Ngl Patrick really earned the like for this one. He's like Leo trying to get an oscar, he'll die if he has to
And without the benefit of a bear attack!
Will and has, just saving it for the end of summer reveal
Bison liver pairs quite well with a dry pinot noir.
Starting to think the quarantine was organized by Patrick and crew so they could have the "Matt Goes Insane" storyline
When life gives you lemons. You drive a man insane.
People call Patrick a lot of things but they can’t call him uncommitted
But he hasn't been committed yet.
Ain't that the truth.
Your Dad should start every quarantine episode with "Come on loser, we're gonna [fill in cool thing here]". Great times with great wines!
“When you’re test driving a car, do you keep it in 1st? No, you push that baby hard and see what it can do. I assume. I’ve never owned a car.”
+5 comedy points
Im 11 months late for this joke because I just recently got into blank check.
I WAS NOT EXPECTING PATRICK TO SPEAK IRISH THE FUCKING LEGEND
TA GAELIGE
"The Prestige is only 14 years old"
The Prestige is... what now?
I Love That Movie!!!
That’s the movie with a magician played by Hugh Jackman.
The Matrix came out in 1999, OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO

@@katherinealvarez9216 I'm pretty sure that's The Illusionist.
"played by Rock Hudson who you might know from this bottle of wine"
A+ material
"It was tasty, I like wine"
Whoa slow down Pat, we're not all sommeliers.
35:27 The moment that Patrick thanks his mother using the second-person plural _"Tá fáilte romhaibh."_ He's drunk so much by this point he's seeing several duplicates of _a mháthair_ and he's thanking them all at the same time. _And I have literally no idea if this was intentional._
He might have just been overly polite 🤷♂️
Either way, it was great to hear some Gaeilge in the vid!
Patrick: 'I worry if I can stretch this talk show thing throughout the summer'
Me: 'Man I hope he'll do these forever, they are SOOO entertaining'
I love the side segments, the music corner, the whole schtick is just A+.
Also, please stay healthy dude!
"Every minute I spend here, I get weaker; and every moment Charl spends sitting on a kitchen shelf, he gets stronger."
I'm so upset they didn't use this line
underrated
NGL, I thaught "Turner Classic Movies Wine Club" was going to be a metaphor. 2020 is a hell of a drug.
TCM-the ONLY thing I miss about TV.
Their catalogue is on HBO Max now
I miss Adult Swim and Toonami.
My last vacation was in 2017, when my mother and I spent a weekend in NOLA.
Day 2 ran us so ragged that by day three, we barely had the energy for the two boat tours (the Mississippi river paddle wheeler tour to the New Orleans Battle Site with a bottomless Mimosa bar and a seafood lunch followed by a swamp tour where I got to hold a baby alligator). So we finished the night eating Dominos and watching TCM- namely Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean and Streetcar Named Desire.
The former is my favorite Paul Newman performance, and the latter is New Orleans’ Bible.
I regret nothing.
I have access to TCM & Adult Swim through streaming (Hulu Live TV).
TCM should get with the times and just make there own livestream/streaming site. Curate away!!! I’d pay for it, but not for Hulu or HBO. Stuff that noise.
I would love it if Patrick did a video about High School Musical 1-3, god that'd be sick
Commenting to give this post more traction XD
Exactly! I want a 50 minute video of Patrick explaining how all of cinema was actually inspired by HSM 2.
Yes
How HSM2 is partially about Troy navigating his white privilege???? Yes pls
Honestly, in the wake of the Cats videos and as I inch closer to watching Here We Go Again, I'm ready for some videos about what makes a great musical.
The fact that I can't tell how much of this is true and how much is pure fabrication is legitimately terrifying
That's the kind of comedy that I like
An Irish Mammy concerned about unopened bottles of wine is a universal truth.
It's all true!
"Brainwashing is bad. Don't do it". Good message Patrick!
Dammit I was gonna do a brainwashing.
Yeah, this advice would've been useful back in high school. Long story short, I'm possibly the leader of my own church and I don't know how to turn this off!
@@eldorados_lost_searcher Just tell them they're not tax exempt and they'll figure out it's not a legit cult.
If a PatrickHWillems video with “wine” in the title isn’t promising, I don’t know what is.
Dude, you are outdoing yourself with Quarantine Showtime. This is the creative energy we all need! Loving it!
I absolutely love how random and unpredictable this pandemic talk show has become. And I am here for it. More of this spirit (of video), please.
Pat's dad saying, "Come on, loser" to his son sent me
Patrick and his mom using good manners in Irish was the cutest thing! I wonder how much Irish Patrick knows?
I love how you did the TCM Wine Club as a joke way to get a bunch of wine, but also managed to defend it being a gateway for cinephiles to watch deeper cuts.
"I like wine." - Patrick H. Willems
"Stop complaining about corked bottles, you're drinking wine wrong."
When asked to describe the various wines he sampled, Willems called them "tasty."
"Bring me my pendulum, kiddies; I feel like swinging!"
Well that now lives in my head rent free 😂😂
"I was starting to think that any wine would be good with any movie"
TCM Wine Club sounds cool, But I am not Alcoholic so I need a TCM Soda or Soft Drink Club. Instead. Or a TCM Food Club
I’d join that.
TCM Juice Club
TCM Spring Water Club
Ditto! I'd be all over something like that!
I’m with the food club idea. I hate alcohol.
Patrick really is underrated, even though he has incredible production, editing and scripting. Wish more people watched him
Guys....I think Charl might be evil
You don't say
Stop it! He can hear you! If he hears you we'll be punished.
Plot twist!!!! Your evil and didnt even know it
No, no, that's Charl's evil twin brother Larch.
I had my suspicions.
I love the added wine cork in the Douglas Fairbanks Chardonnay, I know it's a gag but that's too fucking good
25:34 I will never forgive you for putting footage of a keaton movie while saying chaplin's name and viceversa
I appreciate Patrick’s and Cody from Some More News ongoing hate for John Krasinski.
I shouldn’t be as surprised as I am that the audience Venn diagram for these shows about hardworking, dishevelled and unexpectedly moral men has crossover
This may be one of the most on brand videos Patrick has ever done.
the real question that never got answered, that irish tea, was it barrys or lyons?
There was a box of barrys in the background of another video from a while ago 👀
Always Barry's
@@patrickhwillems I like that this is the only comment you've responded to.
PS: need more charl
@@lourencomarino8351 lol, yeah that's what I also thought! He is supposed to be absent from the comment section, but then then a question comes about tea, he has to chime in
When I went to Warcraft I did so at one of those theaters that serves alcohol. I picked a local cab sav from the wine list. The pairing was...not good. The powerful tannins definitely clashed with the cloying visuals and story.
I haven't seen Patrick suffer this much since the music biopic video.
If this goes on much longer, I'll be liking before the video starts.
"and I happen to like Sophia coppola's performance!" I love your dad so much 😂
Somehow I missed these amazing videos when they came out and now I am in 2024 binge watching all of them. And it's funny to see Patrick's hair slowly coming back.
Every Withnail & I fan should watch this. It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in lockdown. Patrick is always brilliant, but this is exceptional. It starts properly at 5.45.
I liked the video IN THE MOMENT I heard Inu-Yasha's opening song.
same.
King shit
The fact that it was SO RANDOM given the Chanel's focus and this video's focus made it 100x funnier. That and I'm definitely an Inuyasha stan craving yet fearing that sweet, sweet rush of nostalgia waiting for the sequel to come out as a compromise.
The cut of you dancing to the MUSIC MAN intro was GOLD
suddenly the film Computer Beach Party from the last RedLetterMedia video makes a little bit more sense
Big missed opportunity - you could have had wine with cornflakes.
Mom, you're scaring me.
I'm both disgusted and impressed.
Everyone knows it's BEER with cornflakes... sheesh, what is this, amateur hour...?
Or go the Mighty Boosh route and have champagne on your golden grahams...
Wait.....wait....do you mean wine in a glass along with a bowl of cereal with milk???? Or do you mean the other thing
Patrick, this is an All-Timer! John Krasinski would never have made it through bottle #2.
29:16 I knew a joke about "the illusionist" was coming
"Bring me my pendulum, kitties. I feel like swinging."
Vincent Price just enjoyed acting and working, and his energy is infectious ❤
That credits bit with George Bailey was legit hilarious
Patrick's mom and her wine joy are a delight that brightens all the world
”in the words of snake ’pretty tastey’....” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 you bastard you caught me off guard with that one
"Seeing every movie as a metaphor for my current situation"
Hmmm...never knew it could be summed up in 10 words like that
You know, I read _The Little Foxes_ for a theater class once, and we did a little skit; I played Regina (yes, Bette Davis's character), it was awesome
Did anyone else feel obligated, for the first time, to truly sit through the Skillshare pitch? You know because it wasn't sponsored by TCM. And boy and I glad I did! That George Bailey bit at the end had me it tears with laughter!
Thank GOD someone finally is talking about this. I’ve seen the ads for it a million times and it always seemed way too niche to be sustainable as a business?
BE more theatre kid(!)
You can already buy wine online, so that part is clearly sustainable. The only thing they offer that other sellers don't is that they assign each wine an under-appreciated classic movie, and that seems like something a couple of cinephiles could do in an afternoon. Especially since this is being run by Turner Classic Movies, they can even sell the wine at a loss if it gets more people watching their channel.
the big discount is only for the first month after that the discount is allegedly 20%. Then for an online retailer, having a partnership making a monthly 12 bottles sell without letting the buyer chose which ones doesn't seem unsustainable.
I want a UK equivalent. Maybe with beer instead, though.
I don't know why The Illusionist joke made me laugh as hard I did, but I am dying lmao
Kudos to him, I'm honestly amazed more video essayists haven't spent time covering underrated classic film gems, its been a huge missed opportunity that I admire him for finally exploring.
You hadn't see "Crossing Delancey" and didn't like "The Illusionist"? All idols have feet of clay....
Your point about old movies in the age of streaming is why HBO Max is currently my favorite streaming service. They don't "feature" older movies, but the TCM section makes them easy to find and browse.
This is your brain.
This is your brain on drugs.
This is Patrick Willems so intoxicated on wine he actually likes "The Godfather III".
Crazy s****.
I'm recently 30, poor, and I love TCM. I grew up with classic movies on VHS, watching them with my mom. When we could finally afford cable, it was like a whole world of movies we'd never seen but starred the people we loved was opened up to us. Since moving out on my own I can't afford cable, but when I visit my folks, I watch old movies with my mom. Often on TCM. Maybe TCM is aimed at a certain audience, but the movies they show are for everyone
Yus!!! More Gaeilge!! :D iontach!!
I love following Patrick's reviews on Letterboxd and trying to guess the theme of his next video, but I have to admit I didn't see "Turner Classic Movies Wine Club" coming at all.
Speaking of his Letterboxd did you know he gave Joker TWO STARS
Pat shaking his head at the news and nodding at Paddington has been my 2020 mood
this storyline is GOIN places.
edit: and please, mr. willems, do go easy on yourself, i'm not sure how much was the schtick vs how much wine you actually drank, but don't burn out, these are tough times and your audience will be here regardless.
[Hans Moleman voice] *I* like "The Illusionist."
i really appreciated your kind words about the music man, it's based off my home town and we have a museum about it (!!!), but no one seems to think it's any better than "okay." meanwhile, the kids here basically HAVE to watch it and everyone still loves it.
Can't watch the video right now and I have no clue what this is. But I'm commenting for the algorithm because I respect what you're doing with the channel and your desire to include analyses and discussions about "women's films" that often get ignored on the same channel you talk about super hero and action movies! Because a good film is a good film and deserves to be talked about, not matter it's stereotyped demographic.
If this video does poorly, I think it's the title. It turned me off a few times. Then eventually I clicked on it and it was a really great video (so far, only halfway through, but I'm 1000% watching the rest).
I am annoyed at slightly earlier in time me for not clicking on this earlier.
I'm sure I'm the millionth person to point this out, but "Tá fáilte róimh" is when you're speaking to more than one person, like "Go raibh maith agaibh". "Tá fáilte romhat" would be better.
That said, it's always nice to see Irish representation in these videos ❤
I usually love your videos but this one is my favorite so far. That includes the amazing video analysis on Little Women. This video reminded me about everything I love about British comedy. The way this whole thing was filmed and the cuts to the dramatic opening and pouring of every single one of the wines with the same music and font to showcase each one, it had me in stitches not unlike the British comedies and sketch shows I grew up with. The wine bottles just kept coming! Then seeing how you both got wine on your shirt and the open head wound by the end of the video, I just couldn't stop laughing. Never change, Patrick. Never change. This was amazing.
T-shirt w just a cartoon image of Charl
MUST GO! MUST BUY!
Patrick actually watching a wine tasting class on Skillshare is some of the best integrated spon I’ve seen on RUclips
40:34 Best part of the video. "Don't you fucking look at George Bailey!"
SIR. You really just poured up the douglas fairbanks wine with the cork in it, on camera and played it off like we couldn't notice.
I didn't know you speak Gaelic :D. I love your sarcastic descent into madness! Great video.
This video receives 5 stars. A few years ago I went and printed off the AFI 100 greatest films list and truly enjoyed it. My wife and I would sit down, watch a movie, and spend an hour afterwards discussing why we thought it was on the list and if it deserved to be on that list. I still haven't made my whole way through the list and my wife and I are now divorced, but this made me want to revisit the list and dive back in on some older films. I've been waiting for Roku to finally add HBO Max since it has the Criterion within it to get going again. This also made me want to start aggrogating my own lists for my channel since I talk mostly Disney and Disney+ has a ton of stuff most people haven't seen.
You positioned your dad perfectly in this. Out of all his appearances, I think this small insulting bit got a real laugh out of me more than any of his others appearances.
Honestly. The best episode, inuyasha, solid snake, and as a Philadelphian, the entire Philadelphia story bit was beautiful lol
29:15 I’ve never been more amused or horrified by a second of your work Patrick. Thank you
Unexpected InuYasha strikes again in 2020.
This is the best thing I've seen in RUclips in a long time.
Watching this video again I'm surprised no one mentioned the bleeding head wound Patrick had throughout the show.
I don't usually feel obliged to comment on most videos, but for this one I did. Seeing the amount of work you put into these videos is astounding. Given just how niche this specific vid is, probably not a lot of people are gonna watch it, I'm guessing, and that sucks. Film vids on RUclips at the moment are populated with such samey content: (ie: bodiless narration commentating criticisms of Star Wars, Marvel, DC etc) that it's so awesome to see genuine stabs at something as obscure as this. Comparing Patrick's stuff with other afore mentioned channels is like night and day, (in that those channels are becoming somewhat depressing and this brightens my day). From the presentation style, to the editing and writing; there's no doubt in my mind that Patrick will one day go on to make a project that far surpasses anything John Krasinski could make. Thanks for the vids Patrick, this one was especially awesome.
Patrick deserves way more love
The final thesis is a big NICE
"The Music Man" is awesome. Now imagine you saw it as a kid a couple times, it's a fun picture kids actually like (adults being tricked, but as a child viewer you know it's a trick, so you feel smart and fun songs; kid magic), and then watch "The Last Starfighter".
The absolute best reviewer on the planet. Your treatment is so commercial that me and my girlfriend snuggled up under a blanket to watch your review as she said to me - 'This is perfect'. Love you man.
Patrick you are so committed to this, I think this series has genuinely made you a better actor.
Unless this isn't acting at all, in which case I'm worried for you.
I saw The Philadelphia Story before Patrick Willems?!!??! Wow I'm classy.
Mr Willems is a total boss and absolutely nailed his lines.
I'm too busy fun facting "hey, you know David Bowie is in The Prestige?" to think about Scarlett Johansson.
Yes, I always forget she's in it until I'm watching it.
TBF, even by Nolan's standards, that cast is stacked.
Where's the Let's Get CocoNuts segment? The people want Charle!
This may be the best one ever. It's less about arguing for unconventional opinions and more about humor and fun, and still exposing people to some good movie recommendations.
You should have seen a classic Argentine movie with that Argentine wine, like "The Official Story" or "Nine Queens".
This just might be your magnum opus. Really great video
Patrick pouring the wine into the thermos is the greatest thing ever put to film.
I've always wanted someone to talk about 42nd Street 1933. That film just works in so many levels, and we get a glimpse of life in New York in the 30's during the Great Depression.
I will say this: no one who first watches The Prestige as an adolescent hetero male ever forgets that Scarlett Johansson is in it. The bodice ensures it.
Furthermore: yes to it being one of Nolan's best. I love his work in general, but The Prestige feels to me like the connoisseur's Nolan.
When I was a teen The Prestige was my least favorite with Following and Insomnia.
Nowadays It has become my favorite Nolan movie because it is the one that focuses more on the characters and is the least "high-concept" and "action setpieces oriented" from him.
This and Memento are my highlights
@@fredericmigneret4211 I think it's also got his best cast. Admittedly I type that and immediately wonder about it, but Jackman is superlative, Caine does some of his best work, it gets Bowie and Serkis in a room together...
Not if you’re gay you don’t. All I remember are Huge Jackman, Bowie and Christian Bale almost being as likeable as he was in American Psycho
@@tobysinbad We part ways on Bale being likeable in American Psycho, but otherwise fair points
That music yanks my mind straight into Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette EVERY time... And this was a lot of times XD. I was really kind of on the edge of my seat throughout this video, waiting to see what would come next. And I was sad when it was over and there were no more movies. But I do want Patrick to live to forty so... *shuffles away*
Not going to lie - I usually skip the Patreon credits. But these had me in tears by the end.
