Ha Ha. You must read the comment section in all the youtube Mini 14 videos lol. I only talk about guns I know and own, it's easy to put ignorance in it's place.
Thanks for the range work with the different bullet weights. It looks like the mini 14 was fairly consistent. I have a early 1978 ( 181 )Mini 14 model GB and have mounted a scope using the B-Square mount. You are probably the better shot but I really enjoy shooting the Mini 14. Nice video sir !
Thanks good sir. It is consistent enough, I had to sight in each different weight bullet, tested groupings, then recorded the final results. So about 10 to 15 bullets were fired off before the groups where recorded, and I did not swab the barrel between sessions. Have you tried a S&K insta scope base for your 181? You lose your rear irons but it is a more stable platform for a scope, and if I remember correctly those 181 GB's come with a 1in10 twist barrel. Yours would probably agree with some 50gr V-Max bullets, or maybe something lighter for that twist. At any rate, I love the GB's, they are tough little rifles.
Oh yeah, cheap ammo like Monarch that comes from academy does very well, hate to say it but the Russian stuff shot better than the American Eagle in the black box. But if you want to really shoot significant groups, you need to find the proper weight bullet to pair with the twist of the barrel. Thanks for watching!
Nice shooting. Something about the mini-14 speaks to me. I've got to get me one. You have the model I have been most interested in. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.
Hey thanks! Their are a lot of reasons to consider a Mini. They run clean, easy to maintain, eats any kind of ammo up, it a brick shit house. lol But when you say I have the model you are most interested in do you mean series or actual designation? The one I have is a 188 series (first 3 numbers of the serial) made in "95 Ranch rifle that came with a 18inch barrel. It has been cut down to 16inhes and installed a choate comp/flash hider, and M1carbine rear sights. The new tactical minis are pretty much the same with the excepting of the new heavier contoured barrel, and the 1in9 twist rate. The older minis from the late 80's and 90's were 1in7.
Hey thanks. Yeah, I have heard people shooting 1.5 inch groups at 100yards with the new Mini's. But they have mostly been a 2MOA rifle out of the box. I was just trying to show that the accuracy out of the skinny barrel Mini's are not as bad as people proclaim them to be. I cant stress enough how good ammo and pairing a bullet with the twist rate of the barrel is critical to shoot tight groups.
Find different grain bullets and test them to see what weight your rifle likes. Here is a good read from gun&ammo on barrel twist rates: www.gunsandammo.com/ammo/pair-barrel-twist-rates-ammo/
@@J.Huff76 My old pencil barrel mini couldn't hit better than a 12" group at 100 yards with any ammo out of the box. I put an accustrut on there and it was instantly down to 4" and then put a much smaller gas orifice and the recoil was tamed and it no longer ejected brass to eternity and the accuracy was now down to 3" groups then I started shooting only 62 grain ammo and it was down to under 2" groups. Never tried the credit card trick or 77 gr. rounds....might try it.
Oh yeah, all you have to do is look up the first 3 number on the serial. Early 70's models, "180's" were 1in10, the mid 80's and 90's they were 1in7 twists. I think those were the 187's-188's, I know for sure the 188 series Ranch Rifles has a 1in7 twist rate.
Hi Mr. Huff, I have an old mini 14 with a barrel that looks like yours, though I am not sure if it is a Shilen or not. Anyway, I would like to mount a scope on it since it does not have any sight. hte problem is my rifle does not have any mounting hole. What are my options? I appreciate you getting back to me. Thanks. Bobby.
You can get the receiver tapped by a gunsmith, and put a rail system on it or a scout rail made by Amega, or a side mount scope base by B-square. Also if you would like iron sights you can get a gas block front sight. On a side note you will need a 9/64ths allen wrench for the gas block sight and scout rail. Links for products 1. Allen wrench: www.protorquetools.com/9-64-williams-1-4-drive-hex-bit-socket-long/ You will need a torque wrench and 30lbs to put the gas block back together
I never realised how horrible inaccurate my mini 14 was till the internet told me must've made a lot of lucky shots on prairie dogs and Jackrabbits over the years with that horrible pencil barrel.
LOL its from a old 90's video game called Neverhood, the song is "Operator Plays a Little Pingpong" Its just something I like to play for all the AR15 fanboys that doubt the little Ruger.
Marcus Chauvin. Its the original barrel. I have another on with a aftermarket target barrel, but this one is a standard ruger barrel with a 1in7 twist.
Trade? Pardon my French, and please take no offense, but you have lost your fucking mind? Lets get real here for a second, for one it's not a rifle, it's a carbine, and two, it's a semi auto. What job do think it is suppose to perform? 2to3 MOA is more than acceptable accuracy for a center of mass lead pump. It's not a super sniper ninja rifle, and it was never suppose to be, even the new Mini 14 stainless out of the box is a 2MOA carbine. Besides, I would love to see you get better accuracy out of any semi auto carbine shooting that 62gr. Monarch steel case ammo with the lacquer coating. I've seen many AR's at the range try, and they can't even cycle the stuff. That's what a Mini 14 is all about. It's a ultra reliable, durable, lead popper, they are built as tough as nuts and will last a life time. My 23 year old Mini 14 has proven that fact. You need to get over that Sub MOA syndrome, and see what the Mini 14 really is. If I want to shoot real groups I'll pull out my bolt actions. Until then this Mini 14 is good enough for clay pigeons at 200 yards, and that's all I need it to do.
Ha, yeah it is. But the song is about the way I feel about all the negative out put on the Mini 14. I'm kinda getting sick and tired of defending the little rifle from all the hate.
I dont see a problem, 2MOA is good enough for the job of a semi auto carbine. Plus 2.5inch groups with the cheap Russian ammo is impressive by itself, I've never seen an AR do any better with that type of ammo.
Well I think the only thing here is garbage is your manors. But that is great you are getting good groups at 50yards with a high dollar bullet. Mine averages 2MOA at 100yards or better if I do my part, plus that is with a hot, fouled up barrel. I was trying to prove a point with this video that the Mini can do it all day. I shot all 20 rounds out of each box, sighting in, testing, then recorded shots taken. Point is I got the barrel hot and groups didn't open up to 6inches like everyone proclaims. Then you got to factor in that this is a well broke-in 22 year old rifle. I'm also using cheap ammo aside from my high dollar hunting load, and the steel case ammo will average 2.5 at 100 yards. So when you man up and shoot 100 yards with bulk ammo and a hot barrel on video, then you can get back to me.
Lol you sir are a master of putting people in their place...love it

Can't beat than M-1 style bolt action
It taught the Germans a lesson LOL.
That music!😎
Excellent reporting video..
Thanks
Wow, a '95 model. The new ones are even more accurate due to barrel changes. What an accurate little rifle. I think I'll pick up a stainless model.

LMFAO. look up [Neverhood OST] Operator Plays a Little Pingpong
it's downright fantastic
Thanks Finn.
That is a fun song!
After market barrel?
Marcus Chauvin. Its the original barrel. I have another on with a aftermarket target barrel, but this one is a standard ruger barrel with a 1in7 twist.
J. Huff: I thought Rugers were 1in9 twist rate. That's what is stated on their website. Did they change?
Marcus Chauvin this rifle was made in 1995. The new ones are 1in 9. Ruger has changed them over the years. First gens were 1in10
J. Huff: Thank you for the information. I did not know that about the older barrels.
No problem, I'm always willing to help out a fellow gunner
Hopefully the newer stainless give better grouping, I'd trade that rifle.
