Remington 870 Wingmaster / Total Restoration
Did you just use that small bottle of cold blue to blue it or did you sink it in an acid tub?
Nice video. I suggest using pure Tung oil instead of boiled linseed oil. Then it will still be as repairable as BLO but will also have much more water resistance as well as not encouraging mold growth.
I've never ran around with a "Motherfucker" before. They're usually people that I want to avoid. If that is a form of endearment, I think I'll pass on hanging out on RUclips with you guys.
Well done!
Awsome video. 😎
I've got a 20 gauge I'm about to clean up. Great video
Beautiful work. Congrats. Liked and subscribed.
I'm having this barrel put on my mini-14 right now .
What brand of clear gloss did you use of the stock set? And also how did you apply it? Like spray paint? Thank you
I applied a few layers of boiled linseed oil first then sprayed it with a "Rattle Can" of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. I also have a can spray rig, but it can be a pain in the ass to clean up, so I will resort to the rattle can method. It will do a real good job if you are careful and take your time. Spray multiple layers, and light sanding in between spray applications with 1000 grit sand paper.
@@J.Huff76thank you. I’m going to give it a try. It almost seems like I’m doing something wrong sanding after each coat but I’m sure it will bring out the luster.
Good stuff!
Can u do mine I wish I had time to get to it and do it rit like you've done
I know this video is old and I could comment on a more current video but I’m already here… could you find and restore a Steven’s single shot 20 gauge drop down?
Like the m14. Great rifles.
Great 2 videos, my uncle has a 1976 he inherited from his father-in-law that I would love to redo for him. Thanks for the content.
Shit video
Awesome job ,loved it had to watch it a few times
You may not have heard of paint stripper, wonderful crap,it saves hours on sanding
thanks smart ass, but I dont want to deal with the chemical mess on such a small piece of wood, and paint stripper doesnt take the old stain out of the wood so you mine as well sand it. but thanks dip shit
Nice
I see u didn't get that mag tube loose
Georgous
You know, this warms the coldness of my heart.
Wow, so nice
Excellent. Nice turn out.. looks like a Remington 😀
Floating the barrel really helps these stay sub moa
Dixi precious in MS?
Yep, but they are not around anymore. The owner Alton, died a couple of years ago. A damn shame to, anyone that can make a Mini 14 shoot straight is #1 in my book.
Well done
Put. SAMSOM AT-M on it now With Hannibal rail
Um, how about no. Why in the fuck would I put a "TARGET RIFLE" in a folding stock when I have it bedded in a solid wood stock. Are you fucking 12 years old? And hell no to the stupid ass Hannibal Rail. The rifle needs to vent heat, not turn into into a stove top. This has got to be one of the dumbest recommendation I've heard in a while. Plus I already have a 16inch carbine barrel Mini 14 in a wood side folder. Only a moron would put a precision target rifle in a wobbly ass folding stock.
I just finished one a couple weeks ago it was beat to hell it looks about the same I knock a little gloss of I ran the numbers though Ruger it was shipped in 1996 probably the last time it was cleaned
Mattv2099 has a phrase for that rifle…..
I would like a stock like that with cheek piece to replace the laminated one on my M77 Mark II Heave Barele 308.
Wow
really love the mini, hard to find good mage. but had to stop at :30 sec...STUPID MUSIC
then mute it dip stick
I used a finish taught to me by an old gunsmith. Mix of boiled linseed, turps and artist oil tint(burnt umber). I squeeze about an inch of the tint into an 8oz bottle and mix. I applied with 0000 steel wool scrubbing until I feel heat and then move on. Made the prettiest semi gloss stock. First time I had it out someone offered to buy it. Sadly someone liked it enough to steal it. I have an older Wingmaster now and will not be giving it that treatment unless the finish dies. Im 73 now and have had one of these since I was 16 and they were rode hard.
Great looking piece!
Great job! How many hours go you have in it?
oh I'd say a few hours a weekend, for about a month. Probably 12 or 15 hours
Where you at son? Sweatin’ like crazy.
In the very deep south near the gulf of Mexico where the humidity stays around 100%.
@@J.Huff76 Western Washington here, we’re usually at 100% humidity too but it’s cold so we call it rain. I ordered up a similar heavy barrel. You love yours?
@@charleshetrick3152 Oh lord yes. I'm amazed what it can do with factory ammo, but dont look for nothing under 1MOA with it. Unless you reload, you will have to really play with powder charges to get better accuracy. Also I had a highly trained precision gun builder that was familiar with Ruger Rifles put it together for me and, I'm sure that had a lot to do with the way it shoots. Unfortunately he had heath problems and covid sent him over, god rest his soul. His name was Alton Britt of Dixie Precision Rifles. We lost a hell of a dude, and lost the only precision rifle manufacturer anywhere close to me.

@@J.Huff76 commiserations re your gunsmith. I had an interestingly opposite experience with the Rona. My mother showed up nearly every day to help out looking after my three kids. who were gonzo bored and going a little crazy, kept them on track with their studies and gave the. We had the “virus of unknown origin” sweep through the house four times. She never got it but then ironically died of a heart attack as soon as the last of the restrictions were lifted. I’m still an atheist but damned close to believing again; that she survived just long enough to see our family well through the nonsense struck me as possibly deity level coincidence. I built myself an A-team replica Mini-14, my accuracy systems harmonic balancer and adjustable gas system arrives tomorrow. I ordered up a heavy barrel as well but am waiting to either build another or shoot the current barrel out.
I believe if you were using anything other than tula ammo you would have better groups
And I do, I have quite a few video shooting different types of ammo. I was just showing what this rifle can do with cheap steel case ammo. Not bad for crap ammo right?
FYI - white vinegar will remove bluing
Can you share the bluing method?? Thanks!!
Just like new....🇺🇲😎👍
Incredible. Takes a bit for me to be impressed and this did the job.
How did you mount the bipod?
It is a Harris #14 bi-pod adapter. They are made for the mini 14 and clamp onto the gasblock with a tension screw. I have since modified the bi-pod mount and attached it to the forearm using machine screws and tee nuts. If you click on my name, it will take you to my youtube page, click on the video tab and it's the third video in the list. It's really not hard to do if you want to just mount a sling stud in the forearm and use it for your bi-pod to mount to.
ruclips.net/video/T_SzRINr_bY/видео.html
Great video. I have a Remington 1100 that needs total restoration. I will try to follow what you did. Thanks.
What bipod do you have? I need one on my rifle mini!
Oh you have a Rifle length Mini 14? The 18.5inch barrels are still classified as carbines where I have a 20 inch rifle barrel. What do you got? But this is just the Harris #14 Bi-pod Adapter and a Harris Bi-pod. I bought it as a combo from Amazon long time ago. I'm sure they still run a combo deal if you are looking for a mount and pod. But the Harris bi-pod is the adjustable 6"-9" smooth leg. Also this is a old video and I have since up-dated my Bi-pod set up mounted to the stock instead of clamped to the gas block: ruclips.net/video/T_SzRINr_bY/видео.html
J.Huff can you please tell me how to prep in between the vent ribs on the barrel T.I.A
You will have to cut various different grits of sand paper longways at 1inch wide. Stick it in between the ribs and act like you are polishing your shoes. 1500 grit sandpaper is what I used to help blend the vented rib in with the rest of the polished barrel. Also get a "bag of rags" from Sherwin Williams or a old hanes under shirt to clean in the ribs. A shirt or those rags are thin enough to help clean out any sanding trash in the ribs.
@@J.Huff76 I appreciate u you u you responding back, this is very helpful I’m restoring my pops 870 wing master he had passed on a month ago he’s had the shotgun sense new 43 yrs ago Thank you Sir 🙏🏼
@@brandons8768 well sorry for the late reply, been meaning to get back to you. I like to explain that I've been a re-finisher for 28 years now, and I was just showing off want "can" be done with the bare minimum. I had to take a lot of material of the receiver and round off the top edges on the sides due to the heavy rust. This was not an easy task, so beware of possible damage to the steel body of the receiver when you start sanding and polishing. You can dig in too deep in places, or round off the top edges, or sand off the serial number and wingmaster logo on the side. Also to get the cold blue coated evenly on the steel body was a serious pain in the ass. It took a lot of coats, and a lot of rub downs with steel wood to rub out the streaks and even out the finish. It's also a good idea to coat all the parts and just let it sit over night for the cold blue to cure, then buff it with steel wool. And the cold does hold up just fine, here is a current picture I have taken of it this past year: i.redd.it/t6azrlsglu891.jpg
@@J.Huff76 yep it’s going to a gun smith Thanks for replying and your honesty
Nicely done. Really like the Ruger M77 and M77 MII's. One of the most underrated hunting rifles of all time.

I just saw this today, awsome work. I would like to see how the blueing was applied in detail . This had to take a hot minute to do . Beautiful work friend.
what barrel is on this 14?
sorry, i did not see this. www.midwayusa.com/product/1003654894 Made by Shilen Barrel Company
Thanks for this informative video. I watched your other video about refinishing the 870 shotgun and am wondering what type of wire brush you used in your drill. Is this a special wire brush or something I could pick up at a hardware store? I don't want to leave deep scratches in the metal. Thank you!
