- Here is the second part of my video vlogs on my 2023 visit to the cactus nursery of Brent Wigand at Wildomar, California. Learn the process and the factors that play important roles in creating hybrids.
Brent sells hybrid trichocereus and echinopsis cacti by mail order. His nursery is open by appointment only. You can find him in Facebook (groups) and in Instagram under torchcactus.

Very interesting thank you both for sharing 👍
AWESOME Part two of your visit to Brents Nursery Ana :-D and WOW absolutely BEAUTIFUL Superblooms, and so wonderful to hear Brent talking about How to make Cactus Hybrids, and so amazing and informative about storing the pollen in the refrigerator for future cross pollinations, and so incredible that Echinopsis/Trichocereus and Lobivia can be crossed together, thanks so much for sharing the awesomeness with us Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a terrific Thursday today XXXX
19:19 I am nerding out harder than I ever have before - this is such an awesome video!
Haha. I’m glad you enjoyed this video. There is a playlist of all the videos that I made with Brent if you want to “nerd out” some more. 😉
I really enjoyed watching😌🙏💖I also make Echinopsis hybridsw, It's my forte, I hope😉☝️I even have type special like Trichocereus spachianus to do hybridization with.
I wonder if the hybrids, being a cross of two different species that probably have slightly different internal structures and tissues, are stronger or weaker than the parent plants. Like maybe they grow slower, or are more prone to diseases or fungus
I would assume there are pros and cons to creating hybrids. The good, as well as the bad genetics could become dominant in the hybrids.
Some awesome plants there, a very interesting and informative video. I didn't realise Trichocereus could be crossed so widely with other cacti.
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing cactus flowers lovely blooming flowers lovely
Thank you for always watching and leaving kind comments.
Another awesome video, Ana 😊 Always fun creating new hybrids, I enjoy doing that with the Haworthia. Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜☕️
I admire your patience in cross pollinating haworthia flowers. I know it is not easy and you've successfully created several. 😃
So interesting I’m enjoying this series! I have a few of his cacti! But I think the conditions here make it much harder to grow healthy cacti!
One of the cacti I bought from Brent on Saturday bloomed this morning!
Thank you very much Ana and Brent for this amazing video! Amazing work and amazing Cactus Flowers! 👏🌺🌺
I want them all 😩🪷🌵
interesting
Recently I bought several Echinopsis, studied the genus and came back to this video and there is some statements i don't really get.
He wants to cross Trichocereus with Lobivia to get giant Lobivia... But that already exist, a lot of less known Lobivia and Echinopsis grow already pretty large. It would be faster to work from them.
He want to cross his spineless Ferocactus with Echinopsis because there is no spineless Echinopsis? That's not true, for the most known species, we have Lobivia/Echinopsis subdenudata and Trichocereus pachanoi who are already spineless!
He seems to know well his cacti but those things bother me a lot from a knowledgeable guy as him.
Have bought about A dozen hybrids from Brent over the past ~12 months or so now....though one pup was extremely small, it seems to be doing well...and I have been very pleased with everything else. Great selection !
"in the botanical world, they are all Echinopsis", and this not true. The group is kind of messed up, but according to recent genetical studies, the old classification is closer to reality, with globular Echinopsis being unrelated to collulbar Trichocereus. Same for Lobivia and Chamaecereus. Of course it's more complicated with a few exceptions and twists. We need to find a new name for "Trichocereus" since they are unrelated to true Trichocereus like pachanoi.
Have you tried crossing anything with e.mirabillis? It is a small plant but has one very desirable characteristic, it flowers non stop as long as it is kept warm and fertilized, and does so very early, in 2nd year usually. I does not cross easily with others though, I've managed to make only 1 successful cross with it.
learned a lot. this is inspiring
I'm glad. Thanks!
