    Imagine being such an excellent president that you get the mantle of being the last of a fashion generation, the first of a generation to give concessions to enslaved people, one of the best presidents in history, AND pass on the birth day of the country that he helped create.

    Monroe is president with a lot of "The Last" - last Founding Father, last from Virginia dynasty, last president not photographed, last president during First Party System era, last President who ran unopposed, last president wearing powdered wig, knee breeches and tricorne hat ...etc etc

      Last Founding father president to die on independence day. Although Madison might have survived until Independence Day he choose not too, and if you ask me, it might of been for the best since Washington didn't die on Independence Day either. If Madison had, Washington would of been the only founding father president not to.

    The expression, "The Era of Good Feeling," was coined by a newspaper editor.

    Quite the over achiever that President Monroe! A combat veteran of the Revolutionary War, served directly under General Washington, successful delegate, elected 5th President of the United States, negotiates the Louisiana Purchase, secures Florida from Spain and tries to re-enfranchise former slaves. That's one hell of an impressive list! Bravo Mr. President.

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains It's not because maneuvering Oregon away from Britain was no different than maneuvering Florida away from Spain. A global empire implies territory on more than one continent.

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  4 года назад +1

      Does it? All the huge Asian empires were limited to Asia. The Roman empire was at times limited to Europe I believe. I think all that statement meant was that it foreshadowed the imperialism to come.

    • @jacobgrandstaff6640
      @jacobgrandstaff6640 4 года назад

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains I guess my objection is to its setting the US on the path to becoming a "global" empire. The Asian Empires weren't really global empires. The Roman Empire sort of was once it conquered Carthage, but that's debatable. Imo, annexing Hawaii was the harbinger of American global imperialism. Manifest Destiny was inevitable; Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, etc. weren't.
