As an untrained alto, my head voice has always scared me; I tend to avoid it at all times. This lesson really helped-- I feel more equipped to start experimenting with my head voice. Thanks!

Evynne Hollens as a alto I'm in choir in my middle school. And I'm in advanced choir lately my voice has been very raspy and very breathy and not supportive. When I'm singing the do-do singing in my choir I can only get to "fa" before getting very raspy and very breathy. I also know that I am not singing in my head voice. I have been like this for about a month. What should I do to fix this?
Thank you so much for the help.!

Anna31415926 i sang a lot of amy lee.. studied her vocal type. it helped SO much along with these techniques to develop my head voice. i get an effortless vibratto in that range now since working on all this. most important thing is to relax. your head space area that your upper range needs will get smaller and more constricted when you're tense.
sing like snowwhite sings to her birds in the disney movie 😂 sounds silly but if you do that enough while focusing on your technique you can train yourself to let go a little more in that range instead of feeling so forced.

As a soprano, I find it so difficult to sing with my lower register and starts to "vocal fry". Don't know if that's the right terminology for that. Can you please give some tips?

For the soft pallet thing my choir teacher always says to bring your voice back (if that makes any sense). As in to the back of your head, in your throat. She explains it better…
She also compares it to singing like an old British lady XD

This is great for those that have a falsetto. I dont. I just have chest voice and thats it. Been using only that from Sept of 73 when I started working full time in clubs, to when I retired in 2019. This mixed voice/head voice is something some can do and others cant.

I took choir and a few voice lessons all through out school but stopped singing when I graduated high school. I love these videos! They have gotten me back into singing on a regular bases. The best part is that my husband and I found out that we were going to have our first baby and my biggest dream for my future children especially this little girl is that she will have a heart of worship and musical/singing talents far more beautiful then I can imagine! We listen to everything you and Peter share and now I'm not only playing music for her but singing to her ALL the time! Thank you! **Can't wait for the belting lessons. I always had problems with this, I sang for much time in alto register in the choir I participate because I felt uncomfortable using head voice, I was untrained. 5 years ago I had amazing classes with a classical teacher here in Brazil and she showed me how to use that in a very powerful way. So I started to sing as a soprano in the choir (and sometimes mezzo). But I spent 3 years without singing, because I went to study in Australia and there I hadn't participated in a music group. So now I am back, but feeling that fear again... I am determinate to stop being scared of using my voice again! I love this channel !!!

These are awesome, free voice lessons on RUclips!! Doesn't hurt that its from Evynne Hollens, a professional singer, with a college education in voice, who is herself a pro voice teacher and someone I trust. A real bonus for me, with ADD, any normal live schooling atmosphere I don't do as well, because my attention can easily drift and a few seconds of inattention can mean missing key details of instruction. With a video, I can re-watch the entire lesson or specific parts as needed to make sure I absorb all of the information. :) Thanks so much for creating these, Evynne!!
I think this is her third video-voice-lesson so far, there's far more info on details that a novice doesn't even...know exist.

I think I can apply pretty much all of this to falsetto.
Used to be one of the strongest sopranos in my school choir as a boy, then puberty hit and my register dropped all the way down to bass. That sucked for a while, since a lot of the songs I used to sing, I just couldn't any more. Learning falsetto brought some of it back, but fortunately I've learned to enjoy some of the things only bass singers can do. As a result of all of that, for a casual singer (I might have a handful of gigs in a year, at best), I've got a fairly expansive register, which works out very well for livelooping.
I did notice an interesting thing when I started to beatbox: my breathing technique improved significantly, and I just found I had so much more control over the "mouth muscles", than I ever did before. I think learning to beatbox would be a great help for any singer, really. Plus, it's just fun and cool. =P

I think I might be a contralto but I’ve read a lot of people saying that most “contraltos” aren’t actually and just don’t know how to use their head voice. I can sing with head and chest voice and switch easily, but my range is literally just on the lower end of the spectrum. I cannot hit those higher notes no matter how hard I try 🤷‍♀️

I only sing in head voice since my chest voice range is G, but my head voice is top A. I've sung in it for like 5 years and when I tell people they don't believe me because it sounds like a chest voice belting 😂 just done grade 7 and gotten 91% (only head voice, singing low is soo difficult when nervous)

Evynne Hollens, I'm a countertenor (C3-C6). Do you have any exercises to make my head register stronger and more speech-like? I'm going for a Mitch Grassi sound.

Let's be real who isn't going for a Mitch grassi sound? I'm in a girls choir and we sometimes collaborate with a boys choir and they have little to no tenors so I have to act as the tenor/counter tenor even though I'm a contralto who can go high as well. I think mitches most powerful aspect of his voice is the ability to have so much power in his head voice, the line between head and chest voice for him is very blurred but sometimes he pushes himself and he cracks a little, so my only advice is to keep practicing scales with a piano without going breathy and when you start to feel strain stop. Honestly the best way to strengthen the upper register for me is to consistently practice the chest register. Having a strong foundation will allow for you to build a strong head voice on top of that

You are a really great!! The way you explain the feelings are amazing! That last bit did really help me understand head voice, even tho I’m not fond of the nasal whine in “pop music’’ I can see the way you teach ! If you have to project the sound vs singing the sound ! Thank You!

Thank you so much Evynne, these videos really do help ! :) I will be auditioning to enter a drama company by the month of September and I have to sing... I really love to but I never really learned how to properly sing and I'm afraid to get in my upper register ! I think I might sound less weird thanks to your tips ! ^^ All about that palate ! ;) I already put in practice your warm ups throughout the day ramdomly... x) Keep up with these videos, I love them ! (sorry for the possible clumsy grammar, I'm French)

Thanks so much. This is exactly what I needed to practice with and watch. My dad first introduced this video to me. See, I'm going to Miami Arts Charter and my art is chorus and there will be this concert for our choir and there's this song that I am auditioning for a solo on and there's this really high note that I'm reaching for but can't quite get. But this video is definitely helping me. Thanks.
