wheres Simon?
@@darbrojam7440He left several months ago
Was that a product placement within a sponsor-read, or opportunity wasted? Either way, I love a good ad campaign. Like the journey is the destiny, I watch programs for the advertainment (and a little education by osmosis).
do a program on Haitian massacre, never mentioned by media
Never ask a woman her weight, a man his salary, or the British how they got SO many cool things in their museum!
FYI: Some US museums have admissions fees and some don't. The Field Museum in Chicago is privately owned and thus charges admission. The Smithsonian museums in Washington DC are federally funded and are free.
They are also free because of dknations of individals like James Smithson. (Where the Smithsonian got its name), along with Federal funding.
Nice to know 😊
The comment surprised me. Is he naive enough to think that museums are free to run? Would he also expect to pay nothing to go to a movie theater? What a dunce!
@@AB0BA_69 It's not naive to think that governments should provide enough funding for museums to eliminate the need to charge an entrance fee. Many museums ARE free and have a "suggested donation" instead, which is very nice because it remains accessible.
@AB0BA_69 British museums are mostly free and subsidized by the govt. This was done to increase attendance and raise the appreciation of art, cukture history.
Can't believe you didn't know that. What a dunce.
The only reason the pyramids are still in Egypt is that they were too big for the Brits to transport them to London.
You have been blocked by the British Museum
but you can be damn sure that its contents have been shipped nevertheless
@@abs_nobody The contents of the pyramids were looted long before the Brits got there. What is displayed in the British Museum is from elsewhere in Egypt.

Of course we can only hope they will take care of it...
James Acaster has a stand up bit on The British Museum that is spot on.
The UK government should just give the museum a budget to make the best replicas possible(albeit with clear Replica marks where they'd be normally out of sight), get what scans and data they can, and slowly work through the collection, returning the originals as they go.
You can make an argument(tho not necessarily a great one) for keeping some of items that may be useful for ongoing or future research, especially stuff we don't have the tech for, if you're paranoid that political instability or whatever may threaten them, but for a lot of it even that doesn't really apply.
Do you think that, for example, Turkey should return treasures won through conquest?
@@eadweard. "Won through conquest" is just propaganda to legitimize armed robbery. Pirates and emperors; only difference is scale.
@@eadweard. Yes
I went in June. First time in the UK. I gotta say that is one badass and huge museum. I had to go multiple days. It was marvelous (even if half the things were stolen).
Still getting used to Karl, this was a great episode, well done
I enjoy thinking about the contrast between descendants of immigrants in america creating monuments and relics in memoriam to their ancestors vs brits just deciding to play finders keepers
I’m surprised it took this long to cover the British Museum.
They even uncovered a new British man to do it
As someone that's a fan of fact fiend it is interesting to see Karl on another channel but still good to see his deal about not doing sponsors and having the editing staff read them instead
As someone who has multiple friends within Native American tribes, American museums from what I’ve seen from them or in general will either return the item to the tribe or have a deal with the tribe where members are given free admission and they can hold events in the museum with their artifacts. This however is mostly with federally recognized tribes, smaller tribes that the government went back on treaties with don’t have this “luxury” and either have to build their own tribal center and hope for the best (steilicoom in Washington state) or face extinction
Build their own tribal centre or go extinct? What do you mean by "tribal centre"?
@@eadweard. so what I’m saying is I’ve heard of several tribes that gradually dissolved, members stopped meeting, the language died, etc. by a tribal center I’m meaning a place that holds some artifacts but is also a focal point for the tribe itself where stories and legends are passed down, and the members can connect. This can be a small museum like the steilicoom, or as I’ve seen in the south and shack and field where powwows are conducted and coming of age rituals held
Yep! Any museum in the US that takes federal money is required to repatriate. A lot of them come to agreements with the tribes where they'll either display replicas given to them by the tribes, or the tribes retain ownership of the items and loan them back to the museums - often with updated information and input in the displays. It has made museums in the US 1000x better than they were.
They do run into issue where, as you said, either the tribe doesn't exist anymore or the objects have no provienence information so they have no idea who it belongs to. That's how you get the scenario where someone visits and goes "dude my great grandma made that". To which I always respond, please frikkin TELL the museum, theyve probably been looking for her.
If anyone is curious; £200,000 in 1753 is equivalent to £36,456,220.66 now.
In Egypt, they display mummies in museums all over the place. For the most part, they are royal families. Probably among the strangest and amazing burials in their history. Technically, history should be in the countries it comes from with their permission to see them in another country. The weirdest part about any archaeology done in any country is that it fits the modern patterns of fbi type investigators, private eyes, or stalkers because we can only look at trash pits, burials and recorded lineages. In short, we can only see the past by being creepy because it no longer exists the way it did and even those who wrote things down could be coerced into writing the way( let's say the king or government) someone else wanted it recorded. Meaning it could be lies, boasts, pr, embellishments, propaganda, etc., just like our modern history. Plus if we consider ourselves to be human with faults, so were they.
Ooo, was not expecting to see the Big Wanger on here.
Here for the daily dose of Karl!
That ad break with near by Nisha was epic.
I cracked up so hard when I was reviewing it. The moment she tossed the towel over Karl's head, I lost it.
Yeah I usually fast forward through the ads, but saw Nisha and watched it through 😊
Great job Karl, especially for being one of the rabble! Not going to lie, I do miss the beard.🧔🤣👍👍
As a New Yorker the Met is a continuos source of embarassment. They are served multiple search warrants every year because of how many of the antiquities in their collection have been gotten through shady means and have to be repatriated.
very well presented
Glad you think so!
Lucky that Switzerland has neutrality cuz if I was called part of another international group I wouldn't be happy, didn't expect to hear someone call Switzerland part of the EU today haha.
"Controversial"
LOL to whom. The British Museum is a miracle of conservation. It's non political and free. Virtually all of their historical items were either donated or purchased. A very select few were still purchased, but not in the best circumstances. I don't believe the museum deserves any denigration when you consider it's vast educational value.
Can I steal from it?
Sincerely, Romania
@@ProbablyNotLegit you can have a go, but you might end up an exhibit.
I like this guy. Snarky asides are great.
Silly Karl, the British are just ‘borrowing’ said items.XD
Also it was Free Elgin Marbles Day anyway.
@@ashkitt7719 pretty sure he said 'let's play marbles' they got confused and the rest is history
I’d just like to call, “bullshit” on the, “there’s nothing British in the British museum” people before they arrive en masse.
1) Clearly you’ve never been.
2) Clearly you don’t know the history of England beyond the UK or the British Empire.
3) Actually if you took out all the bits in the museum that aren’t “British”, you’d still have a massive repository of artefacts that can tell you an awful lot about the history of the country.
4) Go to any sort of villa or mansion in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland etc and you will find collections of artefacts bought by aristocrats from all over the world. Ask yourself what you’re trying to argue before taking this line of thought.
Disclaimer: I’m not even British.
Yes, all those other artifacts should also be returned.

To who, countries that can’t stay stable for more than five minutes?

Greece deserves to the the marbles returned to them.
Museums charge admission fees because the folks that run the museum have to pay for electricity, heat, light and the other things that make life in the First World so comfortable.
Then why don't British museums?
I love the editing for the sponsor section 😂😂 it's nice to see more of the British humour I'm used to 💗💗
If you sent the Easter Island artifacts to Chile they would not go to the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island, they were go to a museum in Santiago. Better the Brits have them for now.

A lot of this stuff would be lost forever or in private collections if not in the BM as well as countless other museums around the world.
Maybe, but you still need to acknowledge that a lot of this stuff was stolen and is preventing the original owners from having a connection to their history and ancestors.
@@resileaf9501Said original owners would probably sell it all anyway.

Why is the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau? Because it won't fit in the British Museum
Many of those Antiquities would have been lost to time, turned to dust or completely destroyed by other cultures if not for being rescued by those early archaeologist
Ahh, but they weren’t usually archeologists. The science of archeology didn’t exist back then. For the most part, these were taken by people with the sole purpose of selling them to collectors. The only reason we have museums is because the collector is decided that they wanted to show off all that they acquired.
"rescued" by stealing other people's stuff and refusing to give it back.
"Yes, I ransacked his house and stole his Xbox, your honor. But you don't understand, if I didn't steal his game system, it would have been left in his closet to rot. So you should really be thanking me"

I have an idea for countries that have these controversial artifacts!
Sell them back to there countries, top price!
It would help with economic troubles!
Where is Simon ?
Dead (allegedly)
The museum's that charge has to pay the electric and heat bills, tour guides, security guards, cleaning crews, maintenance and so forth.
Every museum in Washington, DC is free of charge for entry.
artifacts are stored in the British not because they don't want to give it back but for some reason they have a better inclination to take care of them rather than destroy them like China. Who seems to be pissed that artifacts are stored in Britain but had no issue destroying a ton of temples with the 3 gorges dam and lake.
Whataboutism is not an argument.
@@RHCole neither is finders keepers I guess.
@@RHColeiconoclasts are a real threat especially in nations going through political and religious turmoil. Isis in the space of a few years destroyed statue and other works that was older than 3 millenia
An estimated 2000 artifacts have disappeared from the British Museum.
This kind of logic of "I will take better care of your stuff" is typical british robber logic. How about you give up your precious personal things to rich powerful people as they can probably take better care of them? : )
@@myster. because a non-profit museum is considered "rich and powerful" right...
The British were simply the best at being colonizers. All these other would-be empires be hatin'.
Nothing to be proud of....
What's next, Nazis bragging about being the best genociders?
Oh wait, the British were pretty good at that, as well.
Not to mention that thanks to us obtaining those items, they were able to be properly cherished. The rosetta stone was being used as a slab of paving when it was discovered. Nothing is ever mentioned of the risks of iconoclasts and those who want to see national treasures end up in personal collections
It's not easy civilizing savages
@@5ryansso….i could steal your car so long as i promise to take better care of it?

I recognized that Brad- er, I mean ad-read... 🤣
Oh shit, and a Nisha!
To the victor go the spoils. People may not like it, but that's how the world has always operated, and almost certainly always will. Just be thankful it was a nation which wanted to put the items in a museum rather than destroy them.
Simon where ya at ????
FYI: Switzerland is not part of the EU either.
The only other problem with sending the relics home is that they were incredibly old and fragile when found. Thus they are even more so now. It would be great for history to be where it came from, but how bad would it be if any of those objects break on their way home. For years they have been intact and cared for, but I would hate to be the one who sent it home only for it to get there in worse shape than it was.
The Greek marble that Elgin wanted to ‘save’ were exposed to the elements, that’s what he meant by ‘saving’ them. True, would’ve been easier to leave them alone and build a roof above them but whatever.
Oh GOd where is Simon ?

Museums are not my bag. Everything has a use-by date, people, buildings, civilizations, nothing is meant to endure forever. Yes the Parthenon marbles would probably turned to limestone if left in Greece, mummies would have ended up as fuel or fertilizer, stone monuments and part of statues used in new buildings, artwork would dry out and crack, gold jewellery reworked into gold bars. It is the nature of things. Keeping those objects so they can be gawked at by indifferent people who would forget what they saw a minute after leaving the museum is stupid. Why the need? You like Roman culture, well, go to Bath, see Hadrians wall, see Vindalanda, no need to look at hundreds of broken marble statues or see that the Romans had glassware, and baby cribs.
great video thank you
I think Nigeria sued and by 2026 they will have Benin Bronze back German also gave back the ones they had because they understand 😂
Many of these artifacts would have been destroyed a long time ago or have ended up in a private collection if the british didnt take them when they did.
