Usually, I get annoyed by RUclipsrs having 57 channels, Simon is the exception. I love all the content, appreciate your obvious respect for your writers, and your narration is excellent. Honestly, you could read the nutrition facts on items in your fridge, and I'd listen to it
Sucha fawna. Hope you get some pay-back - from somewhete
So true
Absolutely
A bit of a weird take, but you have a point. I actually used to think why does _this guy_ have 15 different channels, I almost got sick of looking him.
As an Australian of English decent, I kinda like his reserved nature and understanding of the indulgence of nicotine 😂
People who are doing the right things, _can_ make a second or third channel, but, there are a bunch of people with 6 or so that don’t follow a real formula which negates the point of having all the additional channels.
A cartoonist I like, posts comments on his X channel from his Y account and vice versa to promote the other. He acts like it’s not him, so it kinda adds to the humour.
People do weird things for seemingly no reason. Don’t try to make any more sense from the internet than what you would get on the street, is my advice.
idk - I like youtubers having multiple channels. If it was me, I'd have multiple channels myself.
I lived in Cayenne. I’ve been to iles du salut many times. I believe many of the inhabitants of French Guiana are descendants of the prisoners.
It’s true “papillon” was never there. It’s commonly known in the area.
The islands are quite a nice spot to go to now. You can stay overnight if you wish. There’s a population of deer as well that are completely tame having been around humans on the islands for generations.
It’s a very cool place. Worth a visit.
One day I will 🤞🤞🤞🤞
I recall a History Vs Hollywood episode that said a lot of the Papillon film was exaggerated.
On my bucket list
My day isn't complete until I've had a Square Space ad followed by details of a horrific crime against humanity.
Papillon - in french is saud as papiyon (with a soft n) in english is papeeyon (with a harder n). It means butterfly.
History deserves to be remembered.
Especially the theft of Texas, the plight of slaves in the southern states, the murders of the First Nations, the hatred of the whites towards anyone not white. History deserves to be remembered. ALL OF IT.
@@Demun1649 you okay, mate?
@@staytuned2L337 Aye, for sure I am. For a start, why am I OK? The first answer is always, "Of course I am. I am not a Yenghi" Yenghi live in the most evil country in the world. Worse than the Russ, worse than Iran, worse than Afghanistan, worse than Mali, worse than Kenya, worse than Uganda, worse than Sudan. The US belongs to Satan. Just look at how many massacres have happened in your sick country just in 2023.
As to your lists of so-called muzak. Terrible shite, most honky trash, and it has clearly affected your GOP thought, (you only get the one a year), and you worship the High Priest of Satan, Trumpanzee.
So, I am OK because I am not a Yenghi, and sold out to Satan.

Yes absolute 💯
Thank you to remind me !
I'm glad somebody made this reference.
This is fascinating. We learned about the Dreyfus Affair in school but only that he was in French Guiana, nothing more about the island. Great video.
If I remember a tale from the prison, some of those to be punished by the guillotine were able to return alive because the humidity and wear and tear of a tropical environment blunted the execution device. One man was beheaded and found that while it created a very nasty gash on the back of hs neck he survived. They gave him a reprieve because of it and he lived.
Find it hard to believe they wouldnt be paralyzed for life . A death sentence back then
@@brightlight3520 well, it only caused a gash on the back of his neck, it didn't break his spine. The spine protects the spinal cord, so you'd have to break the bone or sever it to get to the cord.
@@MegaKat im not an expert on guillotines but a 80+ pound piece of metal falling on your neck , no matter how dull, will result in alot more than a "nasty gash".
Typically a guillotine post is 14 feet high and falls at a rate of 21 feet a second.
If this story is true than they were very lucky
@@brightlight3520 and yet, it didn't
@@snowyowl2784 or more likely the story is a myth
If I remember correctly, Ile de Diable gets its name from the treacherous waters around it, not because conditions on the Ile were so bad, although the guards would still have been abusive. Would have been awfully lonely for the prisoners but not as fatal as in the mainland colony.
correct. The island itself was called that well before it became a prison, and was chosen to become one because it was so inaccessible.
Conditions there were actually preferable to those on the mainland, better weather, better food, less harsh (generally) regime. More boredom, but that was preferable to slugging through the disease ridden jungle all day.
Watch the 1973 film, Papillon starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.
Right as I need more content, Simon comes to the rescue.
was scrolling through youtube looking for ANYTHING to watch rn 😭😭 it’s perfect timing
Indeed, I concur 🤘😎🤘
If what you need is more content then Simon pretty much always comes to the rescue......
🎉 truth
Why praise him, he gets ALL of his information from Wikipedia.
Papillon? Omg no. Pap-ee-on
Is this, in any way whatsoever, surprising? There is almost always at least one word per script that gets screwed up.
Seriously, you can react to the cringe, and still appreciate everything Simon does.
@Matt M Yes because simon needs you to jump in and defend him. Lol we can cringe if we want to cringe
@Matt M yeah. Because I thought it was funny seeing as I watched this movie 5 hours ago
@Matt M sounds to me like a found a few bub
Papillon is the best book I've ever read. Best part? Little to no romance.
I remember the story, not from the book or movie (which I was too young to see at the time), but from MAD Magazine.
Oh man. Please read the book. I usually h8 every book I read, but this one is the best!@@llamasugar5478

Part of the storyline of the 1944, Humphrey Bogart film, "Passage to Marisella," involves a plot to help several prisoners on "Devil's Island" escape in order to join the fight against Nazi Germany at the beginning of WWII. The escaping prisoners eventually to become a part of the "Free France" military force.
-It's a good movie and does a great job of showcasing not only the horrors of being imprisoned at the penal colony, but also the perceivably impossible task of escape. 😉
We're No Angels is another Humphrey Bogart film set in French Guiana when he and two other men escape devil's island.Great movie!
@@moodybluesgurl nice. I've got to find that one so I can check it out. Thanks for the tip.
Henri, you lied to me. I trusted your book, Papillon, as a true account. Damn. I've been fooled all these years. Nearly 50. It was a good read, though. I read Banco, too, but that didn't leave any lasting impression on me. But, Papillon, you bastard.
Pap-ee-yon.
The light that fills my lonely cell,
Is blocked out by the key,
That locks the door to this hell,
The place they wanted me.
Time's racing like the wind,
Execution's near,
Oh lord, I wait for death,
And, yes, I have no fear.
I recall that night, my every breath,
And, step along the way.
Closed my eyes, walking,
As danger paved the way.
The devil, and the darkness
Let her evil wander free
And, here on Devils Island,
The final stop for me.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
Oh, there is no escape,
The sea is full of sharks.
The tide takes you away, and
Smashes you on the rocks.
The sun is shining,
But feel not today,
It's warmth, it's dying,
And fading away.
Devils Island, (here I stay) Devils Island.
Oh, hear the call,
From the grave beyond.
Oh, so pernicious,
Her soul it creates song.
As there is no man, that is
Here upon the earth,
Able to terminate our
Noisome will since birth.
The priest that reads the sermons,
Is walking next to me,
To the stake, my last request,
To have her burn with me.
But, so it did, the heavens opened,
Rain began to fall.
The final judgement came, and
Was spread before you all.
Final judgement.
Old, weak, and feeble,
But the lesson taught to me,
To stay away from evil,
She doesn't care for me.
She haunts me in my sleep,
Though I tore that page away.
And, here on Devils Island,
I'll always have to stay.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
(Devils Island, Devils Island.)
Here I am.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
"Pa-pill-lee-on" good effort, good job

The acount called Guillotine sèche was by René Belbenoît later published. Was the main driver of French penal system refom. Thas how I heard it. ??
Have read Pappilon many times through my life. Yes, Henri Charriere may have elaborated much of his exploits, it is a good read.
Always ready for Simon says!
Love every channel with Simon as host
You're pronouncing Papillon wrong, the L's are silent.
The island shown at 10:50 is Devil's Islane in the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. Dangerous waters at tines, but decidedly NOT shark-infested!
Well spotted, it's pretty obvious they've used photos of at least two Devil's Islands now you've pointed it out.
Simon's beard becomes a little more majestic with each new video.
I would never shave with a "lions mane" like that
The author of Papillon lived in Venezuela and owned a brothel, he actually got his hand of the manuscript that will later be the book from a guerilla fighter back in the 60s. Thankl ou for acknowledging that he never was a prisoner.
I'll be honest. Megadeth brought me here. Devil's island is a great song.
Hey Simon, do a video on Juan Bautista De Anza and his expedition exploring the west coast. Nobody has done a decent video on it, you could even make it 2 parts. Or a separate Geographics and Biographics videos.

Thank you for this video. My second great grandfather was sentenced to 5 years hard labor in Cayenne in 1854 for the crime of stealing food (3rd offense). Miraculously he survived and moved to the US where my great grandfather would be born. My second great grandfather would then be murdered in Illinois in 1885. His release documents from the penal colony describe him as "Strongly Constituted" which I think is quite obvious due to his survival in the early days of the colony. His name was Norbert Bohl, born February 2nd 1827.
There was one inmate whom the guards called “An hysterique of the dark cell.” Every time he was about to finish his most recent spell of solitary confinement he would spit on the guards, curse France and much more. His favorite phrase was “Another punishment, if you please!”
He survived his imprisonment and was among the mass repatriation to France. An acquaintance said that he soon grew morose and depressed. After 3 months he committed suicide. It was said of him that he could survive French Guiana, but he could not survive freedom.
Awesome video as always!
a 'Whistle-Out' to Whistler~

The photo of devils Island with the light house, erosion caves, and pine trees is devils island in Wisconsin 😂 right outside of Bayfield
4:56 That boat looks really weird. Specifically, it's got a French flag on the back as per standard for a french vessel, but the top of the mast features the Portuguese Naval Ensign.
Anyone know the story behind that or was it maybe the artist not knowing his flags very well?

Papillon is my most favourite recollection of survival against all odds. It was my dads most fav book and it got passed to me at a very young age. Great content as always

I have been to Saint Laurent du Maroni in French Guiana 🇬🇫 and saw where those condemned prisoners were housed and imprisoned.
England had the Fatal Shore (Australia), the French had Devils Island and the United States has Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, penal colony.

My father was actually sent to the Guiana Space Center by Space Systems Loral to babysit a satellite he'd helped build. Had no idea that that facility and Devil's Island were the same place. Cool

Sounds like Andor with that whole *SPOILER* you’re not allowed to leave the prison after your sentence is up.
It's uncanny and quite interesting just how accurate the film "Papillon" was. Bribing guards and liberes as well as the forced labour in the jungle was quite well portrayed.

Honestly, same for any judicial figure. If you were wrong or ended at a verdict made via personal convictions etc. Should be sentenced to double if not triple the sentence.
1984? Who edits these things?

What a strange concept. Absolved of judicial murder. They ordered it. Its literally on the judges' conciousness etc.
The point was to not be on the guards conscience
Even though the Salvation Islands are small, they large army.
Fun fact. Napoleon III, Marie Antoinette, and H!tler all have something in common: they share a birthday. You know who else shares a birthday with them? Me! 😂😵💫 But at least I have Weed Day to suffer with.
Devil’s Island itself is now a rocket and missile tracking station; there was a forced labor camp on the mainland, called Kourou which was fever ridden and greatly feared by the inmates. Today it is a naval base and the EU’s satellites are launched from there aboard the Ariane rocket series.

After an attempt on 14 January 1858, to assassinate Emperor Napoleon III, Charles DeRudio was sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. He escaped with twelve others, making their way to British Guiana. In later life he joined the American Army and survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Clement Durval, an anarchist, was sent to Devil's Island in 1886. Originally sentenced to death, he later received a commuted sentence of hard labour for life.
