Years ago, I felt the need for fellowship. I had gone to college the previous year and had a bad year, a really bad year, to put it kindly. I was in a very dark place. Seeing as how I was raised in this one little country community, and went to church my whole childhood into tween years, I thought that returning to my home base church would be a good move in my life.
Well, boy, was I disappointed. 3 Sundays in a month. 3 Sundays, I started in my go to church, in the first 35 minutes, the pastor was screaming to give up the money in my wallet.
Truly grossed out and disappointed, I walked out, with true sorrow.
The next Sunday, another church down the street, within the first 25 minutes of the sermon, the pastor did the same. He wasn't as forceful, this pastor was using guilt as his tool. This time, I was grossed out and a bit peeved. Getting up early and dressed on Sunday morning was not and still is not, if I'm honest, something I enjoyed doing. I left.
The third Sunday, different church, same vapid, greedy, gross message.
That was over 14 years ago.
I know I shouldnt have given up for good like that, but to say that little month of experiences, trying to find God in some very dark and desolate days... It left a bad taste in my mouth and unfortunately, my life went left instead of right at that time.
Alot of pain. Alllllot of heartache and mistakes.
I wonder what could've become of my life if I had been able to go to church, and found fellowship, support, Gods refuge and guidance.
Idk. I regret that greed drove my sincere and very vulnerable self at that time away. I wish things had gone differently.

End tax exemption for all religious entites. End all these 501c3 churches, sacred grifts, and holy scams.
Churches have a lot of financial advantages. My work is based in a building which is owned by a church of which we pay a massive rent to. Not only do they not have to pay tax but their expenses are far less too. They have a whole host of volunteers who do maintenance and cleaning for free whereas any other landlord would have to pay people to do the jobs.
Edited to add, the pastor and owner of the building owns a massive house with a pool, owns a boat, and spends three months of the year holidaying, normally swanning around Europe or on a fancy sailboat.

Lonely old people donate their estates, I've seen it. Real properties are improved by church volunteers, sold to an elder, and then relisted for massive profit. There are many references to other gods, or Sons of God, in the Bible. There are also references to God working within a divine council…. Both of these can be found in Gen 6, Deut 32, Job 1, 1 Kings 22, Psalm 82, Psalm 89 to name a few but there are many more. Does this mean that the Bible is recognizing the other gods of other religions such as Zeus, Thor, gods of the Hindu religion and so on and do these other gods work within God’s divine council?
Your best source of info on this is going to be a scholar by the name of Michael Heiser. Dr. Heiser is a specialist in ancient languages and cultures (I think he fluently translates something like 7 different ancient languages) and gives some thorough insights into what you're exploring here. In fact, his inspiration for digging into the text so deeply came from Psalm 82. You can watch all 4 parts of a lecture series he gives on this topic right over on RUclips. To summarize like 4 hours of Dr. Heiser's material in one deeply inadequate paragraph: in essence, yes, Scripture does acknowledge the existence of other beings in the heavenly realms. These are referred to with divine language ("sons of God"), but they are not God (capital G). They're basically smaller rulers. Once we reach the NT, these powers have been replaced by us and we (believers) are now given this title "holy ones," which Paul uses repeatedly throughout his letters. The rebellious *former* sons of God are stripped of their authority and God's faithful human followers are instead given the right to rule. It's fascinating stuff. I encourage you to check out Dr. Heiser's work in detail. You'll never understand this topic the same way again.

It's been awhile since I've been to a church, but last I checked, a minister standing in a location doesn't make that location suddenly holy ground. There's nothing holy about this version of religion. 🤬🙄

I went to her church once with a friend's family in Tampa in the 90's, it was one of the most bizarre experiences i ever had. So many poor black people were attending that church while she was driving a candy red Mercedes Benz. I thought my friend and her family were weirdos for going there, especially after her mom prayed over me to baptize me in their religion. Horrible memories

It was amazing a few years ago, when an investigative reporter from the "National Enquirer" outed Benny ("The Lord Just Told Me That You Must Send Me $1,000 Today") Hinn, and Paula White holding hands, walking the streets in Rome Italy !😮😅 They were shacked up in a posh, expensive honeymoon suite there ! At first Benny said Paula just "happened" to coincidentally show up when he was there. Benny strongly denied any illicit relationship with Paula. After continuing questions and enough outcry by a lot of people, Benny admitted to making an unfortunate mistake when he was at a low time in his life. So, then he basically was an adulterer and a LIAR !!

When I see woman pastor or woman priest, I run. This is so against New Testament. How protestants who study the Bible so much can ignore the fact that women should be humble, not showing off. As someone who is actually employed by a church can I just say that most of us aren’t like this. Our pastor makes well below the median income for our area, and like most churches we are on a shoestring budget. Our current fundraising campaign is for a new roof on our 50 year old building. Livin’ the high life, lol.
As a Christian, I agree with you. It can start looking like all Pastors are corrupt & only after money. But we just don't hear about all the good, honest, Godly ones in smaller churches. They don't get the public accolades, but their reward will come in Heaven. I pray the Lord exposes all the bad ones.

As a church minister (UK, Methodist) I am in a strange position. Housing (we call it the manse) is provided by the church, (through a group of say dozen churches forming a circuit, not by individual congregation) in order to house ministers with families they have 4 bedrooms. Thus in a poorer area the manse may be in the posh bit of town. Whilst in the super expensive, London commuter belt, people in the pew may have bigger posher homes. We more every 5 - 10 yrs so a church is not about who is the minister.
And yes, repairs are a major fundraising project. Sadly some never large congregations are burdened with heritage buildings based on inappropriate dreams of a century before. Or the attack of 'we are as good as the Anglican with ancient Norman towers etc and a period in church building that was about showing off rather than practicality.

It's difficult to explain how totally insane the whole vernacular of US-style evangelical preaching sounds to a UK person (we only have tiny tiny evangelical churches here and they're not in the media at all)... the frenetic vocal styling and the feigned emotion and the shouting and how patronising they are to the audience... while begging for their money... it's so difficult to understand how anyone could not find this unbearable!
The over-the-top mannerisms and vocal stylings are off-putting enough, indeed. I cannot endure 20 seconds of that style of showmanship before I want to barf. But how so many people can just let their blatant lies slide is what truly blows my mind. I mean, as a South African, imagine my face minutes ago when I "learnt" that she and Nelson Mandela together ended apartheid...!! I've never heard about this miscreant until that "angels from Africa" clip that so amused us here on this continent. I'd even wager that she has never set foot in South Africa, and I'd wager even more money that not a single South African would credit her as an architect (in any capacity) of democracy in SA. Not many would know who the hell she is, including our tiny evangelical cells. How those so-called holy religious folks get away with blatant lie upon blatant lie just rubs me the wrong way.

We do have some very big no denominational churches in UK. But yes a very different country next and scale. They usually have a US link or some African origin denominations that have prosperity message, the prosperity message from US has spread a lot in Africa.
Most churches in UK are 10 - 100 people. Actually masses of that size churches in US, it is the huge and messy ones that we hear about.
In UK we had limited TV channels and Anglican services for religious content. The huge prosperity traditions in the US grew from the telvangelists. Being a vast territory there were lots of regional TV channels, and they often could not fill all the schedule creating openings for groups to buy slots, and churches and preachers of a certain kind started to buy in, and by increased offerings then set up their own broadcasting groups etc. All this from 60s onwards.
In contrast the first time I was aware of the God Channel in UK was 90s with cable TV and as pay to subscribe . And a lot was US content. Now it is available with regular packages, so can just trip over it. And can find the few UK churches like that on it though mostly still from US, or African mega Churches.
Parts of US church culture affirmed the celebrity preacher and the rich ones (need Private plane to travel to worldwide preaching appts. Etc) from much earlier than UK, and when church going was strong. By 90s in UK, the secular climate, and within churches non literalist views, mean that we have had the cognitive gap that makes this teaching harder to take hold here.

Most Christians who do attend church, usually do so at smaller houses of worship like you mentioned there. The whole idea of a 'mega-church' never sat right with me. How could someone shepherd a flock of parishoners when they don't even know the names of them much less the problems they're going through (unless that person is within the inevitable clique that surrounds the pastor)?

But those big ones are so big that they end up with a dangerously wide influence, especially TV /celebrities etc. And so imply a big voting block and so impact political decisions, locally or wider. What I understand of the US civic setting it seems more vulnerable to this.
We have local councils run by elected councillors. Recently regional police commissioners have become an elected office. And a few key places have started to have elected mayors (London and big cities). But small towns and country areas the Mayor holds the post for a year, and basically is the senior councillor in the lead party who hasn't yet been mayor - it is a figurehead role not any power, except for getting to pick the charity for a mayors annual appeal.
From my limited understanding of US civics it seems that virtually every community role is elected. That may seem democractic, but also means that school boards deciding on book bans; the sheriff; even the attorney for the state - are affected by the lobbying power of 'I can give you enough money to get re-elected; or I can give it to your rival - will you do as I suggest?'
We also have rules about maximum spend on election campaigns - and so we are saved from the massive TV ad campaigns (TV time in general election is given equally in proportion to the size of the party in that region).
So it does look from this side of the pond that those super rich and influential mega church pastors can create powerful lobbying that may impact a whole community's politics and social rules.
