Then he said "not a good leader" like brody, how many times are they on the verge of defeat or need a plan or need to figure something out and its Robin who saves the day? How often is he doing the most damage, how often does the team essentially lose when he's not around? Like what? He gets knocked off his motorcycle then suddenly "he's not a good leader"?

    It's amazing how the show made a kid-friendly version of "The Judas Contract" storyline with Terra and Deathstroke, but vastly improves the comic version.
    Not only removing the sexual grooming of Terra, but making her decision to ally with Slade based on her own insecurities and fears. It gives the story and the show as a whole a deep and emotional storyline that you can empathize with and see what pushed her to be how she is.

      He still grooms her, just not for sex. He grooms her to be his living weapon, someone with powers he doesn't have that he can literally body puppet from a safe distance. Further I think the TV rating is what kept the sexual aspect out, the way they have him talk makes it clear that it wouldn't be beyond him, it's why he sounds so creepy.
      As for being better, I have never read that, but from what I have heard and at least what some ppl take away from it, it sound like you are correct. Although doesn't he take advantage of her insecurities and fears in order to groom her in the comics?

    I feel like everyone is blowing right past the implications of what's still happening with Terra and Slade in these episodes, everyone's saying at least it's "not like Judas Contract!" You're right, in a sense, Terra is actually treated with more sympathy. Except many in the comments [and even reaction, dismissing it as unintentional] ignore that he's still grooming her and that he in general preys on children? It's 'child friendly' but the coding of why he does what he does is so blatantly obvious. Everyone preaches about how mature this show is, but always glosses over this or ignores it when I argue it's the most well-written dark parts of the story:
    1. He takes consent from her and uses her powers and 'body' for himself, yes sure it's about her powers but read between the lines.
    2. When she vows to be only dedicated to him it's painted to be similar to marriage vows, while not one to one the background at the time reminds me of stained glass windows.
    3. "That's my good girl..." and "What I'm going to do is worse." I guess we'll just entirely ignore these lines?
    4. Classic signs of a controlling abuser and groomer, especially when you combine what he did to Robin with what he's doing to Terra. He isolates, he tells them they don't need friends anymore they have him, he makes himself their one and only- it didn't work on Robin because he didn't have the trauma Terra has which made her more susceptible to Slade- that, and he truly felt he could depend on his friends. Terra, when she came back to the titans, was already in the midst of being groomed and doesn't get that luxury.
    5. Yes Terra has a seemingly severe trauma only mentioned by Slade in episode one, who was STALKING HER, implying that her lack of ability to control her emotions and thus her powers causing horrible incidents to occur. She ran away because of these feelings and the fear she was no good, and Slade as he did in that first encounter, continued to use her fear about 'lack of control' against her.
    Sorry for the long comment, I'm passionate about this sort of thing and it's sad to see the utter lack of sympathy Terra gets when I felt the themes of her characters were obvious by 'we can't blatantly say it but here's metaphors and hints' standards.

    • @AL7249
      @AL7249 11 месяцев назад +8

      Wait. People were acting like this was good for Terra? Like yes she's not intimately taken advantage of has in the comics but it's still gross and fucked up. It was obvious. Literally what messed it up is the lack of moments she has with the Titans and dealing with her trauma. We get snippets and hints but her lack of screentime, shift in personality after the Titans get angry and rushed plot made her seem unsympathetic tbh.

    • @misxfit9605
      @misxfit9605 11 месяцев назад +21

      @@AL7249 I would disagree with the unsympathetic aspect, I think it's clear and easy to see what's up and follow the line of logic with what's been established. I'll agree with the rushed and quick pacing, Terra and her story deserved more screen time to improve it.
      As for what I meant, I'm not saying anyone think it's 'good for Terra' but I've seen a few dismissing parts of both Slade and Terra's characters in the cartoon. By believing in the idea just because it's kid friendly, it means nothing deeper is happening- it's a folly of underestimating a show even people respect because it's animation. It's mostly in people not seeming to get that this Slade is entirely and totally still a... you know.... but they can't say it. So they show it through his more brutal actions and strange wording.
      I suppose it doesn't matter in the end, she's still manipulated, but I feel like ignoring the other layer of her abuse at the hands of Slade is refusing to engage in part of what makes this arc, Terra and Slade interesting as characters. Even ignoring what makes Slade and Robin's arc so intense, sad and interesting.

      I, for one, find it silly because he's still a terrible person who torments children either way. It's just that it's actually more complex then people want to give it credit for, and I love Slade as a character for those reasons.

      There is nothing they can glean from this cartoon aimed for young children to tweens that she was being sexually abused. Don't apply comic events that didn't happen here and expect them to psychically get it; just from the kind of show they're watching, where a magic interdimensional being can turn the world into a child's drawing on Cyborg's grandma's fridge, they are not at all primed to read a deep sexual abuse story from it the show writers did not write.
      Y'all just want to be so serious and grave about a cartoon network cartoon it's incredible. You're not even laying out an argument from events in the show but using seperate media to invoke child abuse imagery as a one up to any differing opinion in the comment section, making any other opinion haver feel guilty.

    I think it’s important to consider that Terra didn’t join Slade for power she joined him for the chance to actually control her powers and because, from her perspective, the Titans betrayed her trust.
    She fell into a toxic relationship with Slade where he gave her what he promised and built her up but only in the context of being HIS apprentice all while constantly undermining her faith in the Titans and claiming they’ll never trust her.
    Even in the last episode we saw her she hasn’t fallen completely under his spell, she was doing what he said because he held this power over her but still felt bad and specifically took Beast Boy on a date so he wouldn’t get caught up in it. It’s only when the Titans, understandably, cut her off completely that she allowed herself to be fully indoctrinated.

    Really feel like you guys missed the whole point of Terra's arc. She was super insecure and it was implied her powers either killed people on accident or caused massive destruction. When she felt betrayed and alone, Slade stepped in, picking up this teenager with no home or family. He proceeded to groom her. Those creepy and disturbing undertones that make your skin crawl, a ceremony that almost sounds like marriage/cult like words, the way he had power over her, its extremely dark. She felt guilty betraying the teen titans at first, but beast boy told her she had no friends and she spiraled, going back to slade fully and becoming a full villain before her redemption. The mindless flip-flopping as you called it is probably because the show sped through a lot with Terra and much is implied, but there is enough there to get what you need to know while keeping it kid friendly enough.

      @@AL7249 I can agree it's a little poorly written at that part, but it doesn't change the way I feel to them reacting to these episodes by going on about her being a bitch and stuff. It just feels like everything else that happened went entirely over their heads? Her character arc is very quickly paced and rushed and you really don't have to love Terra as a character but the reactions felt like A Lot.
      I felt her trauma was pretty obvious, but it's a lot of Implies and hints then blatantly telling the audience.

      @@misxfit9605 Yes! Exactly! It felt rushed and kinda sad. It's no where near Judas Contract but still pretty fucked up and honestly more sad. Her being taken advantage of and manipulated is pretty out there and obvious. I feel bad for her situation and wish it was better even if a part of me feels like things could've been done differently. No sympathy cause of how it was written and how quick her personality changed. Or her just dropping the mask. Just would've liked if she was treated with more respect and understanding.
      And tbf they're reacting that way due to how she acts in between the episodes, going from pissed and vengeful almost gleeful in her destruction of her former friends to wanting forgiveness the second they show back up and really nessd her up. It makes it feel like any chances they gave would've been squandered due to the betrayal and lack of trust. They're reacting to what's happening, I feel kinda odd to but I get it. Even if she was manipulated, she still has chances to come clean. Its just too bad that TERRA herself didn't see them. Honestly I'm lol feeling more pissed at Slade because while people talk about Judas Contract, people KNOW it's bad and yet praise this when it's more creepy due to the implications of abuse and lack of autonomy given to her along with her arc getting rushed.

    Terra felt betrayed because she didn't have control of her powers at first. Just as we learn in the first episode, she always tried to do good with them but unintentionally did bad by accidentally making avalanches, earthquakes and mudslides and Slade said that the Titans wouldn't trust her or understand. That Beast Boy would betray her even though he promised he wouldn't tell anyone in the team that she couldn't control her powers, which he found out by accident and that again, Terra was trying to keep secrets.
    So when Robin admitted he knew she couldn't control her powers, Terra believed that Beast Boy broke his promise. The first and only friends she ever had were traitors in her eyes. THAT is why she turned to Slade. And it's why during her fight with Robin, Terra said "I'm just never going to be good enough for you, am I?" in a bitter way. As a callback to that. None of this excuses what Terra has done but narratively it all fits and makes sense. It's not convenience.
    And even if you don't agree with that? Guess what, in the original comics it's worse. Terra tries to destroy the Teen Titans just because they're superheroes and she hates superheroes for absolutely no explained reason whatsoever. I'm pretty sure you can all agree that comic book Terra is way worse written than cartoon series Terra, regardless of how you guys (especially Bree) might feel about the latter. Blackfire is way worse than Terra because unlike her, Blackfire has absolutely no redeeming qualities of any kind.

    • @marvelsandals4228
      @marvelsandals4228 11 месяцев назад +1

      She ran away and joined Slade because she assumed Beast Boy, her best friend and crush, revealed a secret she confided in him earlier. First of all, he didn't reveal anything, she was mistaken. Robin just figured out her secret on his own, because it was pretty obvious to him. Terra never confronted Robin or Beast Boy about her suspicions directly, she just jumped to conclusions, and in the height of her emotionally charged state, she ran away before anybody had a chance to clear things up. Secondly, all 5 of the Titans accepted her into their group the first time they met, EVEN AFTER they found out about her secret (that she can't control her powers and has accidently caused natural disasters). She was so upset about having her secret exposed that she missed the fact that everyone was ok with it, they still accepted her anyway. Lastly, they also offered to help train her how to control her powers. Her decision to join Slade and betray them all was not remotely justified.

    No really, one of my favorite things about this arc is the fact that Terra really does just kill the shit outta Slade. As cool and menacing a character he is, the implications were very much present - if not as overt in the comics. He groomed her hard, turned her into a monster, and she got him back for it. He does eventually come back in the series… but he has to be brought from beyond the grave.
    In some ways Terra reminds me a little of Annie from attack on Titan, except the story doesn’t frame her like she’s just a hot victim of persecution who deserves mercy and remorse after showing none whatsoever to her victims, AND when Terra freezes herself for 3 seasons, she at least did it to punish herself and keep the world safe from her power… I know it’s a different type of show and AoT is seen as “adult” and “nuanced” but IMO the actual psychology of making selfish choices is actually much better thought out here. Like I get it that Annie is supposed to have been groomed and brainwashed, but she was also given 5 years to basically be all on her own, and somehow she just REMAINED fully loyal and never once changed her outlook, which is fucking astonishing and almost impossible considering her circumstances. Annie stands in utter spite of the concepts of karma or hubris, because the author had an obvious creepy obsession with her himself, and refused to let her “already perfect” character develop in any way, when to NOT develop her basically meant she was morally indefensible, and got nothing but rewarded for it…

    Y'all gotta give Robin some more credit. There is a reason why he, the only member of the team who has no powers, is the leader of said team. He is the equivalent to what Batman is to the Justice League; no powers, but wicked smart and a terrifying strategist, able to come up with plans on the fly and analyze the bad guys for any weaknesses. His agility and combat prowess is just the cherry on top. Let's not forget that when Robin was Red X, he had an exact counter for each of the Titans' powers that stopped them dead in their tracks. If he thought about how to counter his own teammates, how much do you think he's thought about how to counter the actual villains?

    A big part of it is all the problems Terra had in the beginning before she even met the Teen Titans and Slade because of her powers that she couldn't control. She did bad things but the girl of reactions definitely exaggerates, the character understood her mistakes (due to a hard life and well we're talking about a teenager anyway) and redeemed herself at the cost of her life. It's true that she only sided against Slade when he lost his free will, but instead sacrificing her life wasn't something that suited her in any way

    Terra craves approval and affection, slade gave her that in order to control her and her desperation to keep his approval is why she betrayed the titans
    As for the creepy way slade talks, that's actually intentional, in the original comicbook storyline slade groomed Terra and the relationship was overtly sexual in nature, that aspect of their dynamic is thankfully mostly removed in the show but there are overtones hinting to it in how he speaks

    28:31 the audacity. You could easily tell the Titans were fighting her a lot differently than from Part I.
    Also, I really wanna see what was happening in the writers’ room for that episode introducing Larry. Er I’m sorry, Nosyarg Kcid.

    I mean like, Robin is very clearly the leader of the Teen Titans. He's just not the strongest member or necessarily the best fighter. I don't think these two things are mutually exclusive in this show. If anything, I think most of the time, the show tries to present the case that they all work to their best ability as a team, and sometimes that means they fail when they take on enemies individually. They're also still teenagers, if that counts for anything.
