I just saw them live this year at Epcot and they were incredible. This group and their music are so popular they get booked for four days in a row instead of like one or two days like most of the other acts because they pack in the crowds. What I wasn't prepared for is just how rock'in they are with all of their songs live. Listening on video or the studio recordings they seem like they lean to easy listening but they are a big band and blast the stage like a heavy metal group.
Everything... and then some. Like Jeff's productions of other artists, including George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, the Beatles etc. And Jeff's early works in his first group, the Idle Race. And the Move. And the Travelling Wilburys.
Jeff Lynne is 77 now, still touring and bringing in 10s of thousands of fans, hes a genius, still got all the hair, and seems a lovely human being. With Mr Knopfler, England should be proud, and why haven't they both been knighted 🤔
Definitely one of my favourite bands and I've been so lucky to see them twice live and they are breathtaking I'm 61 now and listen to them more since i was 16 🍻🍻🍻.

ELO are my favourite band of all time ❤ That drum/gong piece you mentioned is my favourite fun fact of all time and I'm so happy to share it with a drummer like yourself: That gong sound is actually a fire extinguisher 😂 I watched an interview a few years ago with Jeff Lynne about how Mr Blue Sky was written/created and said he couldn't quite get the sound he wanted for that specific bit, and so he got creative 😂😂 And funnily enough, Mr Blue Sky was voted the happiest song of all time in a pole a number of years ago ❤
The four notes the drummer hits, In the studio there wasn't a cowbell on the drum kit so they improvised and used a fire extinguisher. When they play live they still use a fire extinguisher rather than a cow bell.
🇬🇧 Hey SteVen (with a V) ELO are my ALL TIME number 1 favourite group. I'm so happy you're reacting to them today. Their catalogue of songs are top notch, & I mean every song is wonderful (IMO 😬) ❤🎼🎶🔥🔥
This song is the end of a multi part suite called Concerto For A Rainy Day, which is why the end is so different. It's the coda of the suite. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time! You should check out Turn To Stone, Don't Bring Me Down, I'm Alive, Ma Ma Ma Belle, or their version of Rollover Beethoven. Those are just some of my favorites, but you can't go wrong with anything from their New World Record Album! It's got Telephone Line, Do Ya, and Rockaria! That whole album is amazing, as well as the Out of the Blue album, which is where this song comes from. They have so many great songs. I forgot to mention Can't Get It Out of My Head, Strange Magic, Livin' Thing, Sweet Talkin' Woman, and Evil Woman. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but like I said, they had so many great songs, especially in the 70's!
Its the last song on side 3. Hence “Please turn me over” at the end. Had this album as a kid. Loved it. Jeff Lynn is a genius, he was also in the Travelling Wilburys.
Great reaction….. 5 tracks that you will dig, 1) Fire On High ❤️ 2) Showdown ❤️ 3) Can’t Get It Out Of My Head ❤️ 4) Strange Magic ❤️ 5) Turn To Stone ❤️ ……all bangers ❤️🎸🔥

You have to live in the UK and experience the weather to realise just how happy a song this is! The story goes that Jeff Lynne thought a cowbell would be good for each of those groups of 4 beats but there wan't one available so they used an empty fire extinguisher instead! Take a listen to 'Wild West Hero', you won't be disappointed!
American here, I have applied the Blue Shy reference to those rare days when the temperatures/humidity suit one's personal preference. Makes them rare days indeed. One can almost walk around bouncing on one's toes to the beat of this tune. Personally, temperatures in the mid-70s F with humidity
That whole side, Concerto For A Rainy Day, was based on Jeffs time, i think in Switzerland, trying to write some new songs. It had been rainy weather until Mr. Blue Sky cane out.
Ha! I commented on your Journey 'Don't Stop Believin' reaction that this was another of those songs that seems to bring joy to the listener, no matter who you are. See? It's true! I've still never seen anyone react to this song without smiling.
Jeff and the band went to this Swiss chalet to write a follow up to A New World Record. The weather was dark, rainy and gloomy. Then one day the Sun Suddenly Shone and it was “Wow, look at those beautiful Alps” and he wrote Mr Blue Sky.
The drummer Bev Bevan struck the side of a fire extinguisher, to get the clang-clang-clang-clang at the end of verses, and other key points. So hitting the gong is just playback on the wrong instrument. The video had a lot of people fooled at the end. The letters showed 'mister blue sky', but the vocoder vocal actually says: 'please turn me over', since it was the end of side 3 of the vinyl album or the end of side A of the single.
I have a couple of favourite tracks, each for different reasons: Confusion - For the lyrics Shine A Little Love - For The Drums Wild West Hero - For the vocal range 10538 Overture - It's just friggin' awesome Can't Get It Out Of My Head - It's a beautiful ballad But honestly, every single song is an absolute banger. Whichever song you choose next, you will not be disappointed ❤❤❤
I’m constantly amazed at how so many music lovers have had such a different musical journey than my own - especially when they don’t seem to be “I’ve only ever heard hip-hop” people. ELO has been part of my life since the mid-1970s (as has Queen, another favorite here).
I am a MASSIVE fan of ELO!!! My sister saw them live in concert in the 70's but I was a little too young to go. I used to listen to her albums and they also had so much airplay it was just incredible!!! I soon fell in love with their music and have been ever since!! They are definitely wonderfully gifted musicians and singer/songwriters and some of my fav songs from all of their albums are "Mister Blue Sky", "Telephone Line", "Midnight Blue" is one of my all time favs! "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Last Train to London", "Livin' Thing", "Turn to Stone", "Showdown", "Can't Get it Out of My Head", "Strange Magic" is another one of my fav's as well as "Livin' Thing"! "Need Her Love", "Twilight", "On the Run", "Wishing", "Magic", "Alright", "Just for Love", "One Summer Dream" and on and on and on!! An excellent more recent live performance you can see on RUclips is the Zoom Tour Live and it's PHENOMENAL!!!!

You can't go wrong with Jeff Lynne and ELO. This is one of the happiest songs ever, and love the video that shows how they really are an orchestra. So many of their songs have been used in pop culture and may sound familiar without knowing it is ELO. Even an episode of "Dr. Who" (Love & Monsters) featured many of their songs. My favorite of theirs is "Turn to Stone".
I wish I'd been able to see these guys live, but they only toured Australia in the '70's, so I missed that, being a baby and all. I get why it's hard for them to tour long distance though, they're not lying when they say 'orchestra', between logistics and a whole lotta paycheques. lol. Thanks for the awesome reaction. 'Don't Bring Me Down' is a must. ✌❤
I don't remember the song you reacted to. The vocoder by Richard Tandy. The actual "instrument" on recording is believe it or not a fire extinguisher. The final vocoder line is "please turn me over". It was the final track on side 3 of "Out Of The Blue" which was a four track "Concerto For A Rainy Day". Other bangers "Telephone Line"', "Livin' Thing" "Evil Woman" just three popular songs. If I wanted to add more winners I'd be typing all night. Great reaction as usual. Thank you. 👍😎❤️
This was used at the start of the second Guardians of the Galaxy film and fits so well with what was going on in the film. One of my favourite intros of any movie
I was about to say it's great you have checked out possibly the best feel-good song in the world, but you already said it sound like the happiest song in the world. I remember hearing this song and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody as a child in the mid to to late 70's, and back then, they were my two favourite songs to listen to on the radio. The orchestral parts and the harmonies were really fun to listen to. Hearing these now take me back to a 4 year old. Check out Evil Woman, Livin' Thing or Telephone Line
A rare performance with Jeff minus his sunglasses. I saw an interview with Paul McCartney saying he wished he wrote this song. Jeff is an amazing musician, singer, song writer, producer. Traveling Wilburys should be your next listen if you haven't heard them. I believed he produced George Harrison's "Cloud Nine".
This band SPECIALIZES in putting smiles on listeners faces, lol. They sound like no one else, with their unique blend of orchestral rock, (often) Beatle-esque melodies, and complex but uplifting sound. "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Evil Woman" are two more of their hits to check out, though their whole catalog is a joy.
Mr Blue Sky was made with a 30 piece orchestra and a 20 person vocal section, Jeff Lynne and his 6 band members. The song Mr Blue Sky features a heavily vocoded voice singing the phrase "Mr. Blue Sky". A second vocoded segment at the end of the song was often interpreted by listeners as "Mr. Blue Sky"; it is actually "Please turn me over" as it is the end of side three, and the listener is being instructed to flip the LP over. This was confirmed by Jeff Lynne on 3 October 2012 on The One Show.
ELO has a deep catalog, and it's safe to say if you like one of their songs you'll like all of them. They have such a distinct sound, and Jeff Lynn is a genius producer/musician. There are lots of good suggestions for next tracks in the comments here, but I'll throw in Fire On High; it's almost all instrumental with an absolutely wicked guitar.
This AF Veteran boomer loves your channel! I've worked for a few rockers in my time including Gregg Allman, Tom Johnston (Doobie Bros.) John Stewart. You have a long road ahead with so much great music to review!
"Jeff Lynne loved the Beatles so much, that he ate them" - David Quantick / Blagger's Guide. Electric Light Orchestra were amazing, and the rabbit hole is massive. It leads to Electric Light Orchestra, The Move, Wizzard, The Travelling Wilburies. So much good music.
just saw them 2 weeks ago great show. This and telephone line were the encore performance. my wife was pregnant with our first son when this came out, and of course we cranked the music, funny part, ELO is still one of HIS favorite bands 46 YRS Later.
My oldest boy is an old soul like yourself. He is 20 now and every since he was a child. The Music of these older bands have appealed to him. In first grade he did a book report on John Lennon. His teacher was so baffled he got an A+++ as for ELO this is his favorite band of all time and we are going to see them next week at the Boston Garden. They have not come to Boston in over 40 years and this will be the last time they tour. You can hear the later years of the Beatles wall of sound era which is why the surviving Beatles had Jeff Lynne produce John Lennon's unfinished demos and made them new Beatles songs in 1995. Try to decipher through that word salad Steven. I cannot wait to see them myself. Everything you hear with the big orchestration they is executed in all of their live performances. Naturally there are not many original members left, but all the stuff runs through the creator Jeff Lynne. Not only an elite composer but engineer and producer as well. Jeff was also one of the Traveling Wilbury;s Supergroup of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison. & Tom Petty in the late 80's
@@setonhillstudios in reality Steven despite me being a lot older than you. Look at what you’re covering. You’re reviewing songs from generations before you for a reason. I hate sounding like that get off my lawn old guy, but have you listened to today’s music over the last 10-15 years? There is nothing organic about the large majority of it. No successful artist today especially the solo artists are not writing their own material & Bands of today? your lucky if they are even playing thier instruments for real or singers not using back tracks or lip syncing. I cannot name a new band out today that I can picture being around in 20 years or standing the test of time. You’re old enough to remember what it was like that buying a new album or CD was a physical event. You looked at the art work, you read the linear notes and you had MTV. Consuming music today is just lazy as are most of the new performers. Lady Gaga and Pink are the last Mohegan’s of pure talent as for bands. I think Twenty One Pilots are legit. You will not be reviewing Music from 2024 twenty years from now but you will still be saying Let’s Get into it from the 70’s 80’s & 90’s because your still just opening doors

It is the happiest song ever
Bev Bevan is a brilliant drummer
ELO has a deep catalog, and it's safe to say if you like one of their songs you'll like all of them. They have such a distinct sound, and Jeff Lynn is a genius producer/musician. There are lots of good suggestions for next tracks in the comments here, but I'll throw in Fire On High; it's almost all instrumental with an absolutely wicked guitar.
This AF Veteran boomer loves your channel! I've worked for a few rockers in my time including Gregg Allman, Tom Johnston (Doobie Bros.) John Stewart. You have a long road ahead with so much great music to review!
What?! That’s awesome!! And so glad you are enjoying the channel!
Tightrope and Shangri la next . Greatest intro and greatest outro respectively.👍
I'm seeing ELO on Saturday in Philly
"Jeff Lynne loved the Beatles so much, that he ate them" - David Quantick / Blagger's Guide. Electric Light Orchestra were amazing, and the rabbit hole is massive. It leads to Electric Light Orchestra, The Move, Wizzard, The Travelling Wilburies. So much good music.
just saw them 2 weeks ago great show. This and telephone line were the encore performance. my wife was pregnant with our first son when this came out, and of course we cranked the music, funny part, ELO is still one of HIS favorite bands 46 YRS Later.
De la leyenda ELO "EVIL WOMAN"o *TIGHTROPE*

Thanks for the info and so cool that your son has taken such an interest in music! Always special when your children share the same passion as you do!
