I like this tutorial. It is presented well and at the right pace. I will recommend it to my students. I just want to mention that when you create a shape tween you should select also the last keyframe to include it into the shape tween.

Click the Polystar tool (right underneath the Oval tool), and in the Properties panel, click "Options" under the Tool Settings section. This is where you can change it from a polygon to a star and then change how many points there are on the star and how "spikey" they are.

No, unfortunately it only works with shapes...so not even complex vectors or grouped vectors will work. You could try doing a trace image on an image to turn it to a vector and see if it will shape tween with that - but the quality will not look the same.
