    Like a blending of Poulenc and Copeland. Excellent.

    This sonata is a gem, one of the most poignant expression of the urban melancholy specific to big USA cities. The fact that lots of clarinetists disregard it is an incomprehensible shame to me.

    This piece was written shortly after Bernstein took a master class from Paul Hindemith. Check out *his* clarinet sonata for comparison.

    This piece is pretty good. I like the part at 4:56 because it's exciting and unexpected. I love the sound of a clarinet, I think its beautiful. I'm still not able to play piano that well, but I'm trying.
    Overall 9.973/10 because it's very nice and pretty but not the overall best thing ever.
    Love Bernstein
    This is for a class btw. Don't hurt me pls. ❤

  • @Twentythousandlps
    @Twentythousandlps 6 лет назад +6

    Bernstein called all of his pieces before this one "juvenalia", but the lack of any relation between the Hindemith imitation that is the first movement and the Aaronesque second is not quite fully grown-up as well. But that second movement makes it work and clarinetists have played it from the start. At 8:08 we hear the "Somewhere" gesture, very Bernstein.

    Is it just me, or do some of the rythms on the piano in the vivace section (and the Tempo I in rehearsal mark P) of the 2nd movement sound something like from America in West Side Story?

    • @RoseCadenza
      @RoseCadenza 5 лет назад +6

      Actually, that's because Leonard Bernstein composed the music of West Side Story. I think it kind of sounds cool that way. I love the movie by the way. :D

      The second movement also has motifs reminiscent of PRELUDE, FUGUE, AND RIFFS, another Bernstein piece featuring clarinet (with jazz band).

      True, she plays it as if it were a 3/8 rather than a 5/8 bar. Unfortunate that they didn't do a re-take, since her playing elsewhere is excellent.

    Could someone please explain to me how on earth the pianist appears to play all of the notes at letter D in the first movement without any "spreading" of notes or chords? I've heard other recordings where the RH G crotchet is played like a sort of grace note before the top D. Even then, one has to pedal the G, A, B if the top D is to be sustained, contrary to Bernstein's instruction to the contrary! I'm not sure that Rachmaninoff could have stretched that! Surely Bernstein's hands were not that big?! Any answers, please?

    • @CloudyMcCloud00
      @CloudyMcCloud00 Год назад +1

      Not sure; but I don't think the G is being played at all; sounds like maybe a D instead -- so only an octave stretch. And she's definitely using plenty of pedal -- and can't say I blame her! Very unreasonable writing.

    • @jacobbass6437
      @jacobbass6437 3 года назад

      To be fair, you feel it in 172.5 for the quarter notes and 115 for the dotted quarter. But I’ve definitely had to count a lot harder pieces. Another one that’s really fast is Bozza’s improvisation and caprice. The caprice can be taken at a lot of tempi, but I take it at a very fast 280 BPM. And that piece is triplets. But it doesn’t use crazy meters.
