To think Brahms was retired....... and then Richard Muhfeld came along and Brahms felt he just had to write some pieces for him. Hence we now have the 2 sonatas, the trio and the quintet..... Thank you Rich!!

Beautiful and dynamic music, despite the revisits of distortion.
Written in 1894, these were the last chamber pieces Brahms composed before his death, and inspired many composers thereafter to write for the combination of clarinet and piano.

The slow second movement is one of the saddest, most poignant passages ever. Like a whisper from another, better world. Just enough to suggest what can never be fully known.

encarsiaformosa did someone really say that? Brahms' music is full of wonderful melodies but that's just the start of it! His invention is boundless

3:44 I'm genuinely curious as to what led the pianist to add a G# to the right-hand chord (thus producing an A Major 7th chord instead of an A Major triad) on the downbeat of m. 133. It's not in any edition that I've seen so far...

The piano in these sonatas is just as much a soloist as the clarinet. I believe Brahms intended to be that way.

Why are we looking at sheet music and not the artist, who, by the way, gives a very polished performance? Very odd!

    • @karenyamaguchi9239

No offense taken for an innocent mistake! The videos you see with sheet music are for musicians who study the music. Playing together with the clarinet/piano is surprisingly difficult, and it requires a lot of practice. We use the music to study how our parts fit in with the other instruments while listening to the music :)

Just a small note to the clarinetist: Whenever you play the low F, it's always really flat, so just mouth it up. Other than that it was a wonderful performance! :)
