To think Brahms was retired....... and then Richard Muhfeld came along and Brahms felt he just had to write some pieces for him. Hence we now have the 2 sonatas, the trio and the quintet..... Thank you Rich!!
Beautiful and dynamic music, despite the revisits of distortion. Written in 1894, these were the last chamber pieces Brahms composed before his death, and inspired many composers thereafter to write for the combination of clarinet and piano.
The slow second movement is one of the saddest, most poignant passages ever. Like a whisper from another, better world. Just enough to suggest what can never be fully known.
3:44 I'm genuinely curious as to what led the pianist to add a G# to the right-hand chord (thus producing an A Major 7th chord instead of an A Major triad) on the downbeat of m. 133. It's not in any edition that I've seen so far...
Why are we looking at sheet music and not the artist, who, by the way, gives a very polished performance? Very odd! Check out this video by a high school senior 14 months ago. RUclips: Sonata No.1 for Clarinet and Piano 1. Allegro Appassionato
No offense taken for an innocent mistake! The videos you see with sheet music are for musicians who study the music. Playing together with the clarinet/piano is surprisingly difficult, and it requires a lot of practice. We use the music to study how our parts fit in with the other instruments while listening to the music :)
Just a small note to the clarinetist: Whenever you play the low F, it's always really flat, so just mouth it up. Other than that it was a wonderful performance! :)
Yea, it takes some time to "get" Brahms musical language....but if you stick with it and listen to the same work several times over the course of a week, you will start to understand and be changed forever.
Dang man I know it has it's problems, but there are so many other recordings you could listen to, but you decided to spend your time complaining in the comments
So terrible, I firstly thought it were a synthesized sound! No one can play so metrically and harsh without any idea of breathing (although wind instrument)....

Wow. That slow movement in particular is wonderful and beautifully played thank you so much.
The difficult part starts at 1:42

brahms takes us into his world, full of desperate longing, unfulfilled love, without any hope for happiness.
Whoever said that Brahms can't write beautiful melodies? Just listen to that slow movement!
encarsiaformosa did someone really say that? Brahms' music is full of wonderful melodies but that's just the start of it! His invention is boundless
Playing the first movement for my grade 8! And I played the fourth in my grade 7. Definitely knows how to challenge a clarinetist
J Amber S bro same!
playing this for my clarinet exam, wish me luck!
Good luck!
good luck. 😀 If your exam is not already passed of course.
i played this in my exam too! good luck, you'll do well!
Me too ! My exam is tomorrow... Wish me luck ! I hope you had yours

Listen to Harold Wright/Peter Serkin recording........ absolute best/especially second movement
Veramente difficile poter fare meglio di questi strumentisti, hanno la musica nel sangue
Can you post the other 3 movements? I love this piece soooo much.. Thanks for posting this one!
this was my audition excerpt and i sounded NOTHING like this 💀💀
Gorgeous
Exquisite.
울 엄마가 좋아하는 곡!
나도 처음들었는뎅 너무 좋당!
I’m 14 and I’m playing the clarinet solo wish me luck please
You are too young to play this 😉
@Egg MCMUFFIN .... and nobody cares that you "heard Brahms in a whole new light." Get an attitude adjustment
Harold Wright and Peter Serkin I think.
Linda!
Delicada e linda como uma manhã morna.

Does anyone know who the clarinet player here is please?
It is Karl Leister. He was the principal in the Berlin Philharmonic from the 1960's through the 1990's.
Is there a link for the next movements from the same recording and with the score embedded? Many thanks!
Is this Carl Leister ??
Yes
Where can I find the accompaniment?
Luis Fierro Imslp
I didn't know my solo was so orgasmic

Why are there soany people doing this stuff in middle school?
Get ready for a talented generation
they think the fact they can play the notes alone means they can play the piece. thats why
@@zenosama-tm3bs yes so true. its important to play it musically and not just the notes themselves
Skrillex remix please
Sick wubs
❤
By the way, the audio balance is dominated by the piano in this duet! Unfortunately, sad...
I kind of like the understated clarinet.
The piano in these sonatas is just as much a soloist as the clarinet. I believe Brahms intended to be that way.

This is a very nice piano piece but why is there a clarinet in the background?

You obviously don't read music. If you did you wouldn't that question.

The viola version's just manlier:) I like it more

No shit. Leister knows this
I think the piece is generally sharp anyway
Mighty eagle pee
I confess that I do not understand Brahms.
Yea, it takes some time to "get" Brahms musical language....but if you stick with it and listen to the same work several times over the course of a week, you will start to understand and be changed forever.
How is this so out of tune
Could you have chosen worse recordings to put on? Seriously
You mean the sound quality or the performance?

Guess you should do better and get into the Berlin Philharmonic then.
